Bio:

Metallica is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California. The band's fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship placed them as one of the founding "big four" of thrash metal alongside Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. Metallica was formed in 1981 when James Hetfield responded to an advertisement that drummer Lars Ulrich had posted in a local newspaper. The current line-up features founders Hetfield (vocals, rhythm guitar) and Ulrich (drums), longtime lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo, who joined the band in 2003. Previous members of the band are lead guitarist Dave Mustaine, who went on to found Megadeth, bassists Ron McGovney (demos only), Cliff Burton (the first three records, died in 1986), and Jason Newsted. The band also had a long collaboration with producer Bob Rock, who produced all of its albums from 1990 to 2003 and served as a temporary bassist between the departure of Newsted and the hiring of Trujillo. The band earned a growing fan-base in the underground music community and critical acclaim with its first four albums, with their third, Master of Puppets (1986), described as one of the most influential and heavy thrash metal albums. Metallica achieved substantial commercial success with their eponymous fifth album (also known as The Black Album), which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. With this release the band expanded its musical direction resulting in an album that appealed to a more mainstream audience. In 2000, Metallica was among a number of artists who filed a lawsuit against Napster for sharing the band's copyright-protected material for free without any band member's consent. A settlement was reached, and Napster became a pay-to-use service. Despite reaching number one on the Billboard 200, the release of St. Anger (2003) alienated many fans with the exclusion of guitar solos and the "steel-sounding" snare drum. A film titled Some Kind of Monster documented the recording process of St. Anger and the tensions within the band during that time. In 2009, Metallica was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.Metallica has released nine studio albums, four live albums, five extended plays, 25 music videos, and 37 singles. The band has won nine Grammy Awards, and has had five consecutive albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200, making Metallica the first band to do so. The band's eponymous 1991 album has sold over 16 million copies in the United States, making it the best-selling album of the SoundScan Era. Metallica ranks as one of the most commercially successful bands of all time, having sold over 120 million records worldwide.Metallica has been listed as one of the greatest artists of all time by many magazines, including Rolling Stone, which ranked them 61st on its list of The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. As of December 2012, Metallica is the fourth best-selling music artist since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991, selling a total of 53,642,000 albums in the United States alone. In 2012, Metallica formed the independent record label Blackened Recordings, and took ownership of all of the band's albums and videos.

Album:

Beyond Magnetic is the second extended play by American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released to coincide with the band's 30th anniversary shows, in which they released a new song for all four days of the shows. It was originally released as a digital download exclusively on iTunes on December 13, 2011.All four songs featured on Beyond Magnetic were recorded for the group's Death Magnetic sessions but had not been released.Beyond Magnetic was released on CD on January 30, 2012 internationally and on the following day in the United States. As of September 2016, it has sold over 210,000 copies in the U.S.The band stated the following about the EP:During the Death Magnetic album sessions in 2007 and 2008, we originally recorded 14 songs. When it came time to pick the songs for the final album, we decided on 10 songs that you've all come to know over the last three years... Some of you may have heard bits and pieces of those other songs on 'Mission Metallica' (remember 'Mission Metallica'?!) or heard rumors about them during the recording process, and wondered, 'What ever happened to those other four songs???.' We kept them in the vault and decided to pull them just for this special celebration, so here are the four leftover tracks from the Death Magnetic sessions. They are ROUGH mixes, unfinished to their original degree of mixing from March '08. These four songs were released as a gift to our closest fans, the members of our Fan Club, to enjoy. Now they're being made available to you.On January 3, 2012, Metallica announced that Beyond Magnetic was to be released as a CD on January 31 in the U.S. and January 30 internationally. It was also announced that the EP would be released on vinyl, and would be made available on April 21 in celebration of Record Store Day.

Album:

Garage Inc. is a compilation album of cover songs by American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released on November 23, 1998 through Elektra Records. Over 2.5 million copies have been sold in the U.S. as certified by the RIAA. It includes cover songs, B-side covers, and The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited, which had gone out of print since its original release in 1987. The title is a combination of Garage Days Revisited and their song "Damage, Inc.", from Master of Puppets, and the album's graphical cover draws heavily from the 1987 EP. The album features songs by artists that have influenced Metallica, including many bands from the new wave of British heavy metal movement, hardcore punk bands and popular songs. As of August 2013, the album has sold more than 6 million copies worldwide. The day after Metallica finished the North American leg of the Poor Re-Touring Me Tour in San Diego's Coors Amphitheatre, they hit the studio to start recording a new album of cover versions. As Lars Ulrich explained, the band wanted to do something different after "three pretty serious albums in a row, starting with the Black album and then Load and ReLoad", and the process would be easier by working with covers, especially as the band had a tradition of taking other people's songs and "turn them into something very Metallica, different from what the original artist did".Given the band had recorded many covers that were spread across various releases, such as B-sides of their singles and the 1987 EP The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited, the band would "put them all in a nice little packaging for easy listening" along with the newly recorded cover versions, chosen through a group decision.Only one of the eleven songs in the "New Recordings '98" disk was not done in the three-week sessions, a version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Tuesday's Gone" the band recorded for a radio broadcast along with friends such as Les Claypool, John Popper and Gary Rossington. The cover for Garage Inc. had a Ross Halfin photograph of Metallica dressed as mechanics. The band wanted the booklet to hold a detailed account of the contents of the project, and designer Andy Airfix was allowed to search through Ulrich's catalogue of Metallica memorabilia in San Francisco to create a 32-page booklet. Airfix also did the back cover, where the front of Garage Days Re-Revisited was modified with headshots of Metallica in 1998 and the track list written on tracing paper.

Album:

Back in November, metal titans METALLICA announced ‘72 Seasons‘, their 11th studio album and the long-awaited follow-up to their 2016 LP, Hardwired… To Self Destruct. The new album will be released in April. With the announcement came the release of the LP’s thrashin’ lead single, ”Lux Æterna”, a tune that was followed up in January by the wah-laden scorcher, ”Screaming Suicide”.Now, band is releasing the third single, the classically Metallica sounding ”If Darkness Had a Son”. With a martial groove from drummer Lars Ulrich, mammoth low-end work by Robert Trujillo on bass guitar, an ominous, thundering riff and a lightning-like, expressive solo – colored, naturally, in its opening bars, with some tasty wah pedal work – from Kirk Hammett, ”If Darkness Had a Son” shows the metal A-listers leaning into their strengths, to great effect.“72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves,” frontman James Hetfield wrote of the album’s theme last November. “The concept that we were told ‘who we are’ by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are.”That theme even carries through to the album’s artwork, which prominently features the charred remains of a late-’80s Fernandes LE-1 Strat copy, a likely homage to the Fernandes FST-135 (nicknamed ‘Edna’) that Hammett used early in Metallica’s career.

Robert Trujillo – bass
Lars Ulrich – drums

Album:

72 Seasons is the eleventh studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica. It is set to be released on April 14, 2023, by their own label Blackened Recordings. 72 Seasons is produced by Greg Fidelman, who produced the band's previous studio album, Hardwired... to Self-Destruct (2016), and is the band's second studio album to be released through Blackened.Metallica frontman James Hetfield has said their 11th studio album is rooted in the past, its title a reference to “the first 18 years of our lives, that form our true or false selves … Much of our adult experience is re-enactment or reaction to those childhood experiences”. You could take this as the talk of a man who has spent a lot of time in therapy. In 2019 Hetfield entered rehab again, an experience that clearly informs a chunk of 72 Seasons’ lyrics. “Temptation, temptation,” he keeps repeating as If Darkness Had a Son kicks in. Too Far Gone? draws on the Alcoholics Anonymous principle of approaching recovery one day at a time. Chasing Light has him “down and out”, shaking with “deep withdrawals”. “Come on, give the boy a break,” he pleads, “or he will break.”But students of Metallica’s musical roots may also find a different undercurrent in Hetfield’s statement. At the end of the time period he mentions, the band’s drummer Lars Ulrich had saved up his paper-round money and decamped to England in search of the new wave of British heavy metal: he ended up in Stourbridge, glomming on to Diamond Head, the NWoBHM’s luckless nearly-weres. Ultimately left for dust commercially by Iron Maiden and Def Leppard, Diamond Head nevertheless became a key influence on Metallica: Ulrich claimed the band simply “wouldn’t exist” without them. And 72 Seasons was trailed by the single Lux Aeterna, essentially a Diamond Head homage, its lyrics simultaneously hymning the brotherhood of the heavy metal community, nodding to Metallica’s debut album (“full speed or nothing” sings Hetfield, recalling the mission statement of Motorbreath) and retelling the saga of Ulrich’s teenage trip to Britain, and the warm welcome afforded him: “A sea of hearts beat as one, unified … kindred alliance connected inside.” Should anyone have missed the point, there’s a line about “amplification lightning the nation”, a grammatical fudge that only makes sense as a reference to the title of Diamond Head’s debut album. But the Metallica fan who takes Hetfield’s statement as suggesting 72 Seasons features a back-to-basics approach might note that that’s also how Metallica trailed their last two albums, a reaction to spending the 90s and early 00s exploring avenues some distance from their roots: the influence of blues and southern rock, country and Soundgarden; even banning guitar solos entirely on 2003’s St Anger. Metallica have vociferously defended that era ever since, but clearly something about it didn’t sit right with a band who initially set themselves up as saviours of real metal amid the hairspray, makeup and MTV-friendly hitmaking of the glam era. With the release of 2008’s Death Magnetic, they effectively began doing what a lot of artists do 25-plus years into their career: returning to the sound that made them popular in the first place – albeit without the dramatic commercial slump that usually precipitates such a decision.Which brings us back to 72 Seasons, an album that displays the advantages and the drawbacks of such an approach. It would be a sour Metallica diehard who doesn’t feel their heart lift a little as Lux Aeterna powers along, or as Screaming Suicide erupts into a series of compact, effect-laden Kirk Hammett solos, or as the band knowingly reference their own past: whatever you make of the evil-priests-smiling-as-the-witch-is-immolated lyrics of You Must Burn!, it’s hard to miss that its musical DNA is equally composed of the final single from 1991’s Metallica, Sad But True, and Harvester of Sorrow from 1988’s …And Justice for All. Without wishing to minimise Hetfield’s personal torment, the tracks that deal with his recent problems carry a weight and an edge that serves as a decent replacement for the hunger and testosterone that potentiated their 80s work.Equally, there are issues: moments when said edge appears to be blunted, or when you find yourself wishing the band – who are audibly enjoying themselves – had been a little more judicious with the editing, a recurring problem with latter-day Metallica. The closing Inamorata goes on for 11 minutes, but seems to be that long primarily to evoke past Metallica epics by dint of its dimensions, rather than because the track warrants it. Some of the (relatively) shorter songs could have used a nip and tuck as well: there’s nothing terribly wrong with the muscular Sleepwalk My Life Away bar a paucity of melody about its blues riffing that means it outstays its welcome. Or perhaps 72 Seasons feels every bit of its 77 minutes because of a lack of variety: no ballads, not a huge number of dynamic shifts.

Album:

And finally arrived this 2023 Japanese release of METALLICA‘s mighty second album ”Ride The Lightning”, a very Limited Pressing, priced-down reissue featuring the album’s remaster originally only available into the Deluxe Box Set from 2016. Released past April, this Limited Pressing is already sold out.The expensive “Ride The Lightning Deluxe Box Set” included the album newly remastered but you gotta buy the whole package including the CD, 2 LP, many live shows playing the same songs, a CD with interviews (?) a very expensive – and honestly, not interesting – box. There was no standalone album remastering available.Well, now this Japanese reissue finally featured ”Ride The Lightning” latest remastering at a very good price. And the refreshing, revitalized sound quality really worth to have it.While Metallica’s first album in many ways created a new musical sub-genre, lyrically it was a bit childish. But on “Ride The Lightning” the band no longer comes across like a street gang but like a group of frightened young men using their hellacious sound as a shield against life’s unsettling realities. It addresses capital punishment, death, suicide, and nuclear annihilation—basically, the array of concerns that would become metal’s standard lexicon.Musically, the album represents the moment where thrash metal intersected with prog, thus raising the bar on technicality, structure, chops, and ambition. Its combination of broadened perspective and elevated musicianship arguably mark it as the point where metal as a whole graduated from goofy adolescent expression to an artform that could speak to thinking adults and nourish listeners long after they grew out of its primary demographic age group. In short, “Ride The Lightning” is the moment where metal developed a worldview. After “Ride The Lightning”, thrash metal turned into an arms race of ever-increasing technical proficiency.Though, did an album of such iconic stature that has gone multi-platinum needed a remastering? Well, fans have been asking for a fresh remaster on “Ride The Lightning”, an album recorded with a tiny budget and one deserving a ‘refresh’. This remaster is very, very good, and brings new life to it.
