Bio:

Founded in 1986, German Thrash-heads ACCU§ER became weighty players on the international scene with albums such as „Who Dominates Who“ (1989) or Repent (1992) and songs rife with both technical and compositional pyrotechnics.Right from the beginning, the band established themselves as an original imprint amongs their American brethren from the San Francisco Bay Area as well as fellow countrymen Kreator and Destruction, a fact cemented not least because of collaborations with Testament-/Anthrax-producer Alex Perialis or Industrial-pioneers Die Krupps.ACCU§ER became renowned for their highly energetic performances with capacities such as Motörhead, Paradise Lost and Overkill before it was time to spread out stylistically with Reflections“(1994) and „Taken by the Throat“(1995), both of which became more aggressive and groove-laden.In 1996, the band took a backseat … till 2008.ACCU§ER are back, although they actually never disbanded. Under the monicker Scartribe, they've constantly been around studios and venues up to their glorious return, firing on all cylinders.May 2010 sees the release of „Agitation“, a head-on recourse to classy Thrash-riffs, melodic leads and fiery solos , topped off with charismatic vocals and heartfelt lyrics addressing social injustice. Strengthened by the Scartribe-allies Frank Kimpel on bass and drummer Oliver Fechner, veterans Frank Thoms and Rene Schütz were set on taking the stage with the likes of Heathen, Sadus and Grave, not to forget festivals such as Thrash Assault and Way Of Darkness. With enthusiastic feedback from all over the world, ACCU§ER had tasted blood and started writing another album, which was to be produced by Martin Buchwalter (Destruction, Perzonal War, Suidakra et al.) and released in 2011. Now with „Dependent Domination“ in stores and comrade-in-arms Uwe Schmidt replacing Rene Schütz.After successfull shows in 2011 with Forbidden, Death Angel and a performance at Wacken Open Air, the band is busy again to promote the current release Dependent Domination. In september 2012 a short tour with our friends CONTRADICTION is coming up, not to forget some shows with Sepultura in summer. In october 2012 ACCU§ER finished the recordings of the new album "DiaboliC" at Gernhart Studio produced by Martin Buchwalter. DiaboliC Release: April , 12th 2013.In July 2013 Uwe Schmidt left the band for health and time reasons. Dennis Rybakowski joins ACCU§ER.

Album:

Long banished to the lower tiers of Teutonic thrash, Accu§er have had a career of peaks and valleys, though the peaks were never high enough above sea level for most to notice. They hit a sophomore summit on their 1989 effort Who Dominates Who?, a decent approximation of speed and thrash inspired by Metallica and other West Coast US acts rather than their local, better known German peers. But it wouldn't be long until they felt the sting of the 90s, experimenting with some pretty rank groove and thrash hybrids, quite a lengthy sting of poor to mediocre efforts that further hampered their progress and potential (to the point that they even changed their name). At some point last decade, though, the fires of 80s thrashing inspiration were once again lit beneath their bottoms, and they began releasing a series of new albums that, gradually, better integrated their earlier style into a modern milieu...a streak that continues with Diabolic, which not only gives a sound whooping to its predecessors Dependent Domination and Agitation, but trumps everything else thus far in their career. You read that correctly: Diabolic is the first Accu§er of notable quality, so solidly crafted and meticulous in its production and presentation that it's damn near 'great'. Not that it's remotely original, or album of the year material, but this is the first time in memory I can actually recount listening through one of their records and then immediately wanting to play back through it. The balance of aggression, melody and finesse is no longer plagued by the lazy, 90s groove elements. At most there are 2-3 such riffs executed tastefully over an hour of content, but the vast majority of the songwriting is smugly nestled in the band's roots, only jazzed up with some superb production values that give it a modernized context so that you never feel as if you're listening to some 'old' record or a mindless retread. The palm muted charge patterns are heavily reminiscent of Master of Puppets-era Metallica (so I admit to some favorable bias there), with an occasional mix-tempo rouser redolent of Exodus or Testament (like the verse riffing in "Dethroned"). Even better, though, are the varied and amazing harmonies and melodies that spring up all over the foundation, like joyous flowers blooming through the pavement cracks. Whether it's the chorus spikes ("Diabolic" itself, perhaps the greatest song this band has ever recorded), gladiator harmonies ("Deification"), blazing and compelling double tremolo picked progressions and wigged out staccato screams (both also in "Deification"); or anything else they hurl out there, it almost always sticks...Definitely summoned up some comparisons to the past three, great Paradox records with a few hints of Deathrow and Vendetta in their prime, thanks to the surgical skills on parade. Yet Accu§er manages to distinguish itself through the harsher vocals, which are aggressive barks similar to Max Cavalera if he'd been raised in Germany and not Brazil. Incredibly consistent, and often Frank's accent gives a little charm as when he enunciates the three 'w' sounds in the chorus of closer "World Wide Violence". The drum mix on this thing is fucking unbelievable, and when cranked to high volumes you can just hear the wind spinning off the snares, kicks and cymbals. Like the whole thing is hammering at you from a speedway or air strip. The bass lines are corpulent and constantly throbbing under the rhythm guitar, but I wouldn't say the lines were ever that interesting, just playing along and giving a bit more depth to the kick drums and chugging patterns. They also pull off a pretty nice acoustic guitar intro to "Apocalyptic Decay" that offers some foreshadowing to the level of musicality found thereafter. Honestly, I've heard a lot of younger bands like Warbringer and Evile try to pull off this post-Metallica or 'Bay Area' sound, and while they might be angrier or more energetic, the songwriting skill just never quite hits this level.I struggle even to put together any viable complaints about Diabolic. A lot of the tracks are around 6-7 minute in length, and while they never exactly bore me, I suppose they could be tightened and trimmed down to chop off maybe 10-15 of the lesser inspired moments. Some of the lyrics are also pretty cliche from line to line, and music as good as this deserves some more imagination. But otherwise, this is a long overdue triumph for a band that I'd long written off since hearing them as a teen. Dependent Domination definitely had its moments, but this disc smooths out all the rough edges and had me headbanging for most of the play length. It's not the sort of thrash that would likely impress fans of highly technical fare like Vektor, or those who want dirtier, 80s speed metal production and raunchy Venom-like vocals, but has a lot to offer an audience still fond on Master of Puppets, Practice What You Preach, Fabulous Disaster, etc. Hell, this is even comparable in quality to the latest Destruction, Kreator, and Tankard efforts, all of which I more or less enjoyed. Persistence, once again, pays off. Well fucking done, and better late than never.

Album:

The return of thrash metal in the 21st century has been nothing but positive, with contemporary acts of the genre such as Bonded by Blood, Warbringer and Evile introducing a new generation of metal fans to a style of music popularized by 80s legends such as Anthrax, Kreator and Testament, amongst numerous others. Metal Blade Records’ Accuser originated in the 1980s scene along with the classic bands of the time such as Heathen, Metallica and Megadeth, but in recent years went under the name Scartribe before returning in 2008 under their original moniker. Their new album, scheduled for a March 11, 2016 release, is entitled The Forlorn Divide. The record opens with “Predawn” which essentially is a melodic guitar introduction which prepares the listener for the second track “Lust for Vengeance”, which as its title implies is a much more aggressive song, complete with rapid-fire drumming and a vocal style completely its own without borrowing inspiration from any one legendary thrash vocalist. The guitar work is also impressive, as it complements the time signatures which stop and start randomly as the track speeds onwards. An impressive opening to the record for me.“Unreal Perception” is quite different in terms of its rhythm, but nonetheless roars along in typical thrash metal glory. The speed which guitarists Dennis Rybakowski and Frank Thoms, as well as drummer Olli Fechner, play their instruments is quite commendable and definitely displays their own individual instrumental abilities. The middle section of this track focuses on slower rhythms which create a nice change in terms of going from fast rhythms to sections designed to show off guitar solos as well as give listeners a chance to bang their head. Following on from this is the track “Arbitrary Law”, which has a more industrial styled tinge of thrash to it in comparison to previous tracks, giving the song as much of a Nine Inch Nails feel as it does an Exodus feel. The track also has one of the catchiest vocal lines heard so far on the album. Leading on from “Arbitrary Law” is the song “Impending Doom”, which seems to have a hint of sludge metal in its musical instrumentation and overall sound, before launching into a soulful and intricate guitar solo which is a significant departure from what the track has done so far. The almost-chant like vocals as the track approaches its fourth quarter are also a change of pace, which is quite exciting to see a band making creative modifications to what they present in terms of album material as each song roars by.“Tribulation” is up next, with an introduction composing of a distorted bass solo as well as the traditional guitar and drum thrashing. The song quickly settles into a really welcome groove before the vocals of lead singer Frank Thoms come into the fray. “Tribulation” is definitely one of the most interesting tracks on The Forlorn Divide simply due to its rhythmic changes in time signatures and its inclusion of many different instrumental ideas which all add positively to the quality of the song. “Perish by Oblivion” follows as the album gets closer to its eventual finale, with a Slayer-influenced beginning section before planting its feet in various different groove-like sections which the vocals sit very nicely on top of. The riffing on this track especially is superb, and the quality of production is excellent in terms of being able to hear every instrument clearly. After “Perish by Oblivion” comes the track “Fifth Column”, with a surprisingly lengthy 48-second instrumental introduction before the vocals kick in. While the track is definitely not poor, I feel that it is Frank Thom’s most mediocre vocal performance heard so far on the record, as his voice is definitely not up to the level it has been so far on the album. On the musical front though, the instruments sound crisp in terms of their sonic output and drummer Olli Fechner’s abilities as a musician are shown front and centre on this song. The penultimate track on The Forlorn Divide is entitled “Sulfur Rain”, which contains easily the most savagely heavy rhythmic pace and general audial atmosphere. While being one of the most up-tempo songs to be found on the album, the vocals are much better on this song in comparison to “Fifth Column” with little hints of Joey Belladonna here and there in terms of Thom’s singing. It’s good to see that “Sulfur Rain” turned things around and that the track before it didn’t lead to the last few songs not being as enjoyable as what came before it. The Forlorn Divide ends with the track “Flow of Dying”, and while a lot of closing tracks on records tend to be generally slower compositions designed to finish off the album in a particular way, this song does the complete opposite and retains all of its enjoyable thrash metal qualities, especially when it comes to the frantic drumming which drives the track from the beginning up until the end.In conclusion, The Forlorn Divide by Accuser is an album that both new as well as seasoned fans of thrash metal will enjoy, as it is a decent representation of the classic sound of the genre but with a relatively modern spin on it.

Album:

When a band decides to release an eponymous album a full 12 LPs deep into their career, and more than 3 decades since their debut outing, it can be rightly inferred that something more than just business as usual is afoot. For their part, the German thrash quartet Accuser have tended to be regarded as among the more Bay Area-leaning adherents of the Teutonic scene, often drawing comparisons to the likes of Metallica rather than the darker and nastier fair common to Sodom, Kreator and Destruction. The career trajectory following the release of their 1987 debut The Conviction has been an exercise in progression that largely mirrored the mainline conventions of the times, including a more experimental sound as the 80s drew to a close, followed by the adoption of a more groove-based approach as the 90s wore on. Recent years have seen this outfit drawing closer to the faster, but also more modernized sound that was ushered in by offerings like Exodus’ Tempo Of The Damned, featuring a more compressed and massive production approach as its chief point of separation from the old ways.Relative to their output since their late 2000s reunion, Accuser takes a healthy degree of influences from the older guard that have been continually expanding upon the modern thrash sound, drawing perhaps the greatest deal of comparison to the most recent offerings of Heathen, Annihilator and I.N.C.’s Terrible Things. The return of long-running, on again off again lead guitarist Rene Schutz has definitely had an impact on things, as the stylistic approach here is far more kinetic and frenzied when compared with the still largely groove-oriented sound that permeated much of their 2010s output following Schutz’s early exit. Likewise, the degree of technical flair and melodic intrigue at play in the guitar work often finds itself going beyond the signature anthem-like passages of Xentrix and often finds itself in full blow Forbidden territory. All the while, one can’t help but notice that after about 34 years of punishment both in studio and on the road, front man Frank Thoms’ signature blend of old James Hetfield gruff and current day Chuck Billy rage has lost none of its punch. If nothing else, this outfit’s greatest strength has been their tendency to get right to the point rather than engaging in drawn out introductions, and this album proves to be no exception. Leading the pack are a fair of compact, high energy bursts of thrashing excellence with a tall order of guitar showmanship on the side in “Misled Obedience” and “Phantom Graves”. Similarly short lengths yet powerful offerings such as “Rethink” push the envelope a bit further and almost veers into all out tech thrashing territory after the early Annihilator mode and superimposes some dissonant, almost death/thrash-like tremolo leads and disturbing harmonic passages in that almost sound akin to something that Vektor might employ. On the other side of the equation are some more drawn out offerings such as the epic semi-ballad “Pyschocision” and the slower grooving anthem “Be None The Wiser” that rely more upon atmosphere yet are also fairly intricate. But for the most part, this is an album defined by pummeling, mosh pit-friendly mayhem with a lot of detailing like “The Eliminator” and “A Cycle’s End”.From start to finish, this album speaks to a band that has been revitalized both by the return of one of the better guitar players to shred the fret board in Germany, and perhaps to an equal degree by the challenges posed by the ongoing circumstances of the current year. It’s the best thing they’ve done since the departure of Schutz following the 2010 release of Agitation, and is among the best things done by this band since the close of the 1980s. It leans a tad bit closer to their vintage sound from the aforementioned period relative to what was put out during and following the 1990s, but it is still presented as a modernized thrashing beast comparable to what most of the big names of yesteryear have been putting out of late. There is no shortage of blinding rage and flags of discontent being flown, and the right balance between memorable hooks and instrumental gymnastics is struck to appeal equally to tech thrash junkies as well as mainline fans of the style. For a fold that has been accusing the system for so long, there is definitely a satisfaction that their convictions have resulted in yet another positive verdict.
