Bio:

Razor is a Canadian thrash metal band formed in 1984 at Guelph, Ontario. The group shot music videos for songs such as "Evil Invaders", "Shotgun Justice", "American Luck", and "Sucker for Punishment". The band dissolved in 1992, but reformed in the late 1990s to record another album, titled Decibels, in 1997.The band are currently planning to record another studio album. Guitarist and primary songwriter Dave Carlo has been the only permanent member in the band's 30-year history.Razor were featured on the 2005 "The Gates of Hell Tour". They also headlined the 2009 "Headbangers Open Air" festival in Germany in July 2009. In the United States and Canada they have toured with well-known acts such as Slayer, Motörhead and Venom. In February 2011 Razor headlined the "True Thrash Festival" in Osaka, Japan. A DVD of this performance was released in Japan in February 2012. In Canada, they last appeared at a charity event in Toronto on June 21 2014.On April 19, 2012, guitarist Dave Carlo was diagnosed with stage 2 oral cancer. He was successfully treated and is planning on playing live with Razor in 2015. The band is already confirmed for the 2015 Maryland Deathfest. The band has also signed a deal to release Violent Restitution, Shotgun Justice and Open Hostility through Relapse Records.

Album:

Violent Restitution is the fifth full length album from the Canadian speed/thrash metal band Razor released in 1988. It is the first album to feature Rob Mills on drums and Adam Carlo (Dave Carlo's brother) on bass and the last one to feature Stace "Sheepdog" McLaren on vocals.Vocalist Stace "Sheepdog" was sacked from the band later in 1988 after Dave Carlo had heard rumours circulating around that Sheepdog was had been initiated as the new vocalist for fellow Canadian thrash metal band Infernäl Mäjesty. Tensions between Stace and the band had been coming progressively worse as he, according to Carlo, was more concerned with getting drunk and stoned and his performances had even gotten worse because Sheepdog was forgetting the lyrics and just wouldn't put out the effort to memorize them while the rest of them had worked hard on their respective instruments. After realizing Infernäl Mäjesty hadn't fired their original vocalist, Stace left and called Carlo back, and said he had just been "fucking around" with the band. Dave then prompted Sheepdog that Razor was continuing on with vocalist Bob Reid.

Always a pleasure to swing the pages of Metal’s history, and thanks to Relapse Records, I had the opportunity to jump back in time to my high school days, back when I got to know the Canadian Speed / Thrash Metal executioners, RAZOR. If back then I thought that these guys were one of the fastest out there, nothing really changed in the present as I am ready to let out my thoughts about one of three reissues of three of the band’s classic albums ranging between the late 80’s and early 90’s. The first in line is SPV / Steamhammer’s originally released bloody mosher “Violent Restitution”. Also, this album was actually the end of an era for RAZOR as it was the final album with their original vocalist, Stace “Sheepdog” McLaren, which served the band so well throughout his years with them.Armed with a tenderness towards street violence, and plainly a whole lot of right between your eyes spike studded fists of fury, RAZOR only seldom let loose of the pedal from the Metal, breaching speed limits even faster than their country peers EXCITER. “Violent Restitution”, partially due to its slight angered Punk attitude and its infested early MOTORHEAD and METALLICA aspects, involved the crude art of classic Speed entangled in reins with chunks of American Thrash Metal, West Coast rather than the New York style. Although in nowadays view the musical structures and arrangements might appear out of date, or even banal, yet leaving out the present, as it just doesn’t fit when checking out old albums, you would notice that RAZOR created their own sort of murky class. Listening to my chosen undeniable numbers of pure Metal frezny, starting with the infectious “Enforcer” and crispy “Violent Restitution”, I was consumed by a youthful spirit that digested me slowly; into the veils of old school Thrash Metal combustion. Gathered around with “Out of the Game”, “Eve of the Storm”, “I'll Only Say It Once” and “The Marshall Arts”, it was as if the fuel for the fire never seems to be enough.Probably RAZOR’s lesser end is the fact that their choice of riffs throughout their songs, mainly focusing on this here album, led to nearly identical compositions. Lack of ideas you may ask? Unsure, but at least the riffs presented were ample enough to create havoc in the ring in such a manner that my head almost blew off the fistful of Metal. Thankfully, Dave Carlo, other than establishing the Canadian Thrash front with this riffs, assaulted with quite an impressive selection of deranged soloing spreads, shooting down all resistance. RAZOR’s simplistic antics attributed the songs with a wholesome of power along with Sheepdog maniacal fronting, which appeared undetached from the music. Back in the day he was a soldier of fortune at work, barking and spewing commands to his nonstop thrashing companions. Later on, Sheepdog would be replace by the shrieky Lemmy driven Bob Reid, which took hold of RAZOR’s front line till the first breakup.Definitely, “Violent Restitution” is an exciting album, heavenly speedy and heavy as they come. Relapse Records’ gift for the true Thrash Metal fans, as bonus, other than the total remastering of this release, three live tracks in order to capture RAZOR live back in their heydays. On this album there would three songs from the band’s performance in Toronto, hailing 1988. Studio might the cleanest place around, yet in order to let RAZOR sink in, you ought to check their stage essence. Generally, a must album for every collector, RAZOR fan, and true Metal believer and devotee.

Album:

Shotgun Justice is the sixth studio album by Canadian speed/thrash metal band Razor. It is the final album to feature Adam Carlo on bass and their first with vocalist Bob Reid.It was a dawn of a new day, a fresh cracked in the rib cage after being thrown in the mosh pit. The RAZOR crew, just like clock, checked in with a new album, saying goodbye to the mighty 80's and into a new, not so welcoming frontier called the 90's. Still the early 90's had their advantages but as far as the Canadians, I wouldn't bet on it as it started with "Shotgun Justice". The band's lineup changed as Sheepdog was out of the band welcoming the new hard racing, Lemmy meets Joe Cocker, Bob Reid to the front center. With a fresh pair of lungs, the band’s sailed into an even harder, pretty much Punkie zone, letting it all out about their life. At times I just wished they would have remembered their past legacy.First of all the addition of Bob Reid. This guy, even at present, still has that frickin' vigorous nature that in the past revealed the thin line between barking maniac and a friction of melodic intent. However, when it comes to his debut in RAZOR, he sounded more or less static, which after a few songs all was made quite clear. It kept on going and going, all the way the same.Second, it is RAZOR's musical bash offering. If "Violent Restitution" was a bad as speed racer, "Shotgun Justice" turned to be a bullet train, barely stopping for a quick fix, always on the run. At some point it was exciting, true mosh, brutal kind of Speed Metal, second to none. However, with a tracklist that long, the sense of speed became weary. Carlo, the master behind the guitaring, laid down some awesome notes, some quite inspirational in the field of Thrash Metal that took down even some of the mightiest SLAYER riffs. On the other hand, similar to the speed factor, it became the version of itself, as if the guy had no ideas or naturally went back to the basics of his own creations and remodeled a bit.Though somewhat coming short in contrast to the magnetic past, there is quite a lot to like about "Shotgun Justice". I was inspired by the band's down to earth themes, even stronger than past albums, the street wise, life on the road, everyday life of the simple working man gone to shit. The face of society at its best. Also there are additional referrals to the band itself, which actually put it out in a simple, wicked kind of way, what went through the members' minds. Furthermore, the unavoidable energy that these guys have live, featured on the extra tracks, achieved more for this album's reissue version. Also there were the album's bone breaking highlights, part of the skull mashing heritage, like "American Luck", "Violence Condone", “Stabbed In The Back", "Burning Bridges", "Brass Knuckles" and "Meaning Of Pain". Though Punk oriented and not always short and sweet, those tasted crashing Thrash at its glory, mastering the pits. Not all bad, yet not all the good, "Shotgun Justice" is a fine line in a load of albums. Certainly I can't deem it to be one of RAZOR’s finest, yet it was threshold to a different version of the band. Within this Relapse Records reissue you would find interesting recordings of some of the songs, with the crown jewels in the image of the live performance. Eat the Metal.

Album:

Open Hostility is the seventh studio album by Canadian speed/thrash metal band Razor. The deep rooted anger that will never cease, going strong and beyond control. Society needs a hard kick in the ass in order to start looking of what is going around it, unless appealing for a massive stroke. Bold words, yet easily manifested through another RAZOR album, “Open Hostility”, reissued via Relapse Records. Actually this album was the last release before a hiatus from the studio till 1997, as the band’s first breakup began eating its way into completion. Less than a year since “Shotgun Justice” and another shakedown for the lineup ending up with the recruitment of Jon Armstrong for the bass. As for the drums, after Rob Mills closed up shop, guitarist Dave Carlo took it upon himself, just this once, to program drums. Probably less a position to worry about. Honestly, as much as I didn’t want to admit it, more or less it fairly paid off. Generally, “Open Hostility”, still keeping it immensely social, a step up from the previous album, showing a better side of RAZOR’s Speed / Thrash Metal assaults. On my early review of “Shotgun Justice”, I argued that on some point Carlo simply had no more ideas regarding riffs and arrangements. Unknown if he was suddenly struck by the hammer of muse, but his guitar work, both technically and composing, somewhat abolished a shard of my older opinion regarding the recurring material coming back to haunt. Other than hand, “Open Hostility” had its recursive elements that were part of the former album, and those mainly lasted throughout the second half of the album right into the pit of the demos that summed it up. Furthermore, also connected to my previous review, Bob Reid appeared to fit right in the scenery of RAZOR quite smoothly, back then with a second album to his belt. Regarding Carlo’s drum programming, as I was saying I was rather surprised that it went well. Though RAZOR’s Speed Metal drumming ends up with rather simple kind of skin bashing, there were turnouts that sounded rich enough to cross the banal line of fire.Songwriting and arrangements wise, here and there a few changes were implemented like slightly differential in the riffs, taking bits of groove into the music though still heavily dosed by easy living Punk anarchy supreme. RAZOR shooting tracks like a blitzkrieg attack, barely crossing the threshold of three minutes. However, their points are well noted and understood. There are areas where the music would abandoned the fast pace menace that out rightly ruled the album, as it was throughout the band’s career, and linger in mid-tempo. “Sucker For Punishment” for instance, one of my album’s greatest, sucked in a lot of heaviness, well done singing and sheer excitement, a true kind of headbanger. “Bad Vibrations”, “Road Gunner” and “Mental Torture” cleared up the smoke of the previous punishment, back into the saddle of full throttle invasion. “In Protest” and “End Of The War” rallied in heaviness to scream in the name of those who died and dying merely for the purpose of too talkative folks to keep their jobs. Not a giant step in comparison to the previous album, but close enough to be reckoned as progress. RAZOR were angry with that album, probably than ever before, and rather mature as well. Musically, most of the way that kept what they knew best, how to rattle the cage with furious Speed and traditional Thrash Metal riffery. Be sure to embrace yourself with a few past notes like unreleased tracks and a few demos, all installed right here on this very reissue. Do yourself a favor and purchase this one.

Album:

When this promo was headed my way, I thought,“Wow, new Razor”? Well no, it’s actually very old Razor, but it still cuts as keenly. Escape the Fire is a very nicely restored version of the demo album by the same name, apparently shelved by the band’s label in favour of what coalesced into the vaunted first full-length, The Executioner’s Song. What we have here is an important artefact to long-time fans of the band, because it is sophomore-era Razor presented in the same mode as their debut EP, Armed and Dangerous. This means a drier, more blood-and-guts approach to the material, compared to the looser and reverb-drenched versions found on the official follow-up LP. The performances here feel live and immediate, with a no-nonsense approach to the production that would make AC/DC envious. Bassist Mike Campagnolo describes the recording as the band ‘firing on all cylinders’, and indeed, the energy in the performances are assured and aggressive. Metal’s evolution was exponential in those days, and it’s worth considering how this rawer interpretation of the band’s sound would have changed things. As for how it sounds, it’s fucking Razor. Do I really need to explain? It’s another example of how heavy metal was continuing to be angrier and more steroidal as newer bands began to pull away from their Judas Priest-inspired efforts in the name of something much more confrontational. You’ve got Sheepdog‘s famous howl over Dave Carlo‘s relentless downpicking, all unvarnished and in your face in this iteration. There’s little else I could say to convince you to investigate this if you’re still unaware of one of Canada’s most famous metal institutions. The question of this album’s role in the Razor timeline comes down to preference. It’s certainly a worthy purchase for collectors , but at the same time, three-quarters of the material made it onto Executioner’s…, and if you’re married to those versions, this might not do much for you. Escape the Fire is a great snapshot of the band in the heat of the moment, though it missed its chance to be the intended building block for their sound. That said, it’s still a high-impact, unvarnished listen that makes you want to beat the shit out of people, like all Razor albums do. This record is the group at their most bare-knuckled (save for the unrelenting Violent Restitution), and that’s certainly saying a lot.

Album:

It’s been over 25 years since Canadian thrashers Razor’s last album. Since then the band has reformed and played a string of shows here and there. In recent years Relapse Records reissued some of the band’s earlier material, Violent Restitution, Shotgun Justice and Open Hospitality. A new generation seemed to discover or rediscover Razor and they were hungry for new material. This was just the push those old thrashers needed.Cycle of Contempt is a welcome return and the band hasn’t aged a bit in their hiatus. Looking at the amazing album cover, it looks like it came from the classic thrash era of the early nineties. This is pure thrash through and through. Nothing too fancy or over the top, the album is forty-three fast and furious minutes of high octane pissed and angry fury.Riffs are brutal yet catchy and the vocals are just as great as they were on Shotgun Justice or Open Hostility. Songs like ‘Jabroni’ and ‘Off My Meds’ were made for singing/shouting along too. ‘Punch You in the Face’ is probably one of the most mosh worthy songs I’ve heard in a long time Try to listen to this track without wanting to fuck shit up. Betcha can’t do it.It’s always frightening when a band releases a much anticipated comeback album. It’s always a gamble. Will it live up to the hype? Will it be worth the wait? Will it be Chinese Democracy or Surgical Steel? Thankfully Razor’s return is nothing less than triumphant. Is it their best album? Time will tell. Cycle of Contempt is a welcome comeback. Razor hasn’t missed a step and hopefully they won’t make us wait another twenty or so years before they release another album.
