Bio:

Female thrash metal power trio from Sao Paulo, Brasil, formed by Fernanda Lira (bass and vocals), Prika Amaral (guitar and backing vocals) and Pitchu Ferraz (drums).Even having been part of groups of different styles before, like death metal and crossover, all members see in the compositions of Nervosa the same passion: thrash metal. With strong influences from this genre’s classic school bands, the girls in the band seek to bring up what is best in heavy music.Prika Amaral started the band in February 2010, and in July 2011 Fernanda Lira took over the bass and vocals of NERVOSA, and only then, finally with the full team, the band started working as a professional band – writing, recording, doing shows. In March 2012 the band released their first video for the song “Masked Betrayer”, which reached the incredible mark for a new band of 20,000 views in just one week, which led them to receive an honorable mention YouTube, ranking 17th place most viewed music video of the week and the 55th most watched in March of that year.Because of the reputation earned through their hard work, NERVOSA in the following months accomplished a great achievement: the deal with the Austrian label Napalm Records, which has in its roster names like Cavalera Conspiracy, WASP, Grave Digger, Moonspell, Huntress, among many others. In 2012, the first record of the band, a demo with three tracks, was released in Brazil on CD independently, under the title ’2012′ in August, and abroad via Napalm Records on vinyl in turquoise color, and via Nuclear Blast in clear version, both under the title ‘Time Of Death’, which cover art was designed by artist Andrei Bouzikov, who has worked with several bands before, such as Municipal Waste.Nervosa ends the year of 2012 with a very positive balance of more than 50 shows made across the country, among them, sharing the stage with bands like Exodus, Raven, Grave, Samael (in Roça n Roll Festival), Exumer and Artillery , among others. After a period of changing drummers, the girl who took over the drumsticks and came to join forces with the band in February 2013 was the competent Pitchu Ferraz, who carries a long 20-year career in the instrument. The year of 2013 began with renewed energy, and the band continued promoting their EP nationwide, with shows in several states, and even with a tour around North and Northeast of Brazil, and sharing the stage with other major names, such as Korzus, Ratos de Porão and even Destruction, Exciter, Blaze Bayley, Kreator, DRI and Benediction. In 2014, the girls finished recording their first full length, entitled Victim of Yourself, which featured 12 tracks and which cover was again signed by the artist Andrei Bouzikov, and which booklet was produced by the Brazilian artist Rafael Romanelli. The album was released in March that year via Napalm Records in Europe and North America and by other labels and distributors in South America, Japan and Russia. In addition to the traditional format on CD, it was also launched four versions on vinyl in black, blue, red and transparent colors, with distribution by Napalm Records and also by Nuclear Blast. Two videos were also released along the album promotion: ‘Death!’, which was recorded in an abandoned cemetery, reaching the record of views from all the videos of the band, and ‘Into Moshpit’, a compilation of live videos that demonstrates all the energy in the live show of the girls. These two singles, added to other tracks on the album, made ‘Victim of Yourself’ reach great metal audience response, as well as highlight and good ratings in major magazines in this segment around the world, such as the European Metal Hammer, Rock Hard , Terrorizer and Bass Guitar, the American Revolver and Guitar World and even the Japanese Burrrn!, besides Brazil’s Roadie Crew, Bass Player, Guitar Player and Modern Drummer. The good reception of the album was essential to result in a long and intense tour, which lasted for the years of 2014 and 2015. To promote the record, the band played in 17 of the Brazilian states, went through seven countries in Latin America and made a successful tour in Europe, with 51 shows in 60 days, passing through a total of 16 countries on the continent, including presentations on some of the major European summer festivals like Summerbreeze, Brutal Assault, Metal Days, Obscene Extreme, among others. The band is currently doing the last shows of the tour ‘Victim of Yourself’ and finishing the writing of their new album, to be released in mid-2016.

Album:

This three-piece female thrash act definitely look mean enough in photos, (well, except for that girl on the right of this photo – she looks like she lost her best friend, or something… bad day at the photo shoot, I wonder?) but are they rough enough to stand out in the vastly populated thrash scene? The short answer is yes, and here’s why. First of all, we’ve got a drummer who’s not afraid to really let loose on the kit, as she hammers down more than a few tasteful drum fills and even rolls into machine-gun territory a few times. Secondly, we’ve got a guitarist who sets the place on fire with her odes to Destruction, Slayer, Exodus and Sepultura. But let’s not forget about the handful of prog melodies that come into the mix every now and again. You won’t hear them all too often, but they’re there to break up the monotony and combine with the drums to make wonderfully structured piece. Yet I’m forgetting about the third demon here, and that’s their front woman. She’s got a bark that sounds like it came from the very pits of hell itself, which is definitely on par with the male throated bark of what we’re all used to.Seriously, these gals have quite a bit of muscularity and I think that thrash fans are going to take notice of the sheer amount of work and pure give-a-fuck mentality that has gone into this disc. Let me tell you something, if you can make a song that’s less than four minutes long sound like it’s got enough riffs and structure for a song that’s nearly twice that size, you’re doing something right. And not just in thrash metal, but in metal in general. Nervosa isn’t trying to hop aboard trends and this isn’t Butcher Babies Thrash Redux. Give “Wake Up And Fight” a listen, and you’ll be even reminded of Death in some areas, which is never a bad thing in metal. There’s not a sign of djent riffs on the disc, nor bubbly vocal harmonies or bubblegum riffs. Now I know that there will be some guys out there who’ll say “look at these girls who wanted to jump out of the kitchen for a minute to play thrash.” But to be perfectly honest, these three vicious vixens are so good at their craft that they’ll have you washing the dishes and making the dinner for a change! Truly Nervosa put all anti-feminine metal misogynists in their place, showing that they’ve got more balls, piss and vinegar than a good chunk of the thrash bands that I’ve reviewed throughout the years. Check that review score again. That’s almost a perfect score folks, and I give it with good reason. I could definitely stack this one up against several of the thrashers I’ve heard this year and would say without question that’s it’s definitely one of 2014’s best. I don’t think enough people know about this album yet, but they should recognize the talent, precision and power that is being put onto display here. I’m actually kind of shocked to see that Butcher Babies is going to perform at Golden Gods and not these unmistakably skilled women. For if Nervosa had been on that main stage, then I daresay that we would have had a remarkable thrash performance… but there’s always next time, right guys?

Album:

Brazilian Thrash Metal band Nervosa impressed one and all with their landmark debut in 2014 titled ‘Victim of Yourself’. Armed with scorching thrash metal riffagery and raw, raspy vocals, their debut album took us back to the glory days of the Teutonic Thrash Metal era. While ‘Victim of Yourself’ more or less restricted itself to the Thrash Metal genre, the band explores some new facets of songwriting in their latest offering titled ‘Agony’ which will be out on June 3rd via Napalm Records. The album kicks off with “Arrogance” and the band means business right from the get-go. Fully drenched in thrash metal goodness, “Arrogance” hits that sweet spot of groove and raw brutality consistently. Fernanda Lira sounds like a wild jungle cat hissing away in anguish, while guitarist Prika Amaral and drummer Pitchu Ferraz whip up a storm in this supremely strong opener. Right away you know you are in for the ride of your life.Comparing ‘Agony’ with ‘Victim of Yourself’, I found that the band’s Death Metal influences are more evident on this album than their debut. The band concocts a potent cocktail combining thrashy groove laden hooks with oodles of Death Metal tremolo riffage along with subtle but interesting tempo changes. Tracks like “Theory of Conspiracy” and “Deception” are great examples. However, what will really surprise the listener is the final track “Wayfarer”. It shows an entirely different facet of the band with Lira’s clean vocals and a distinct NWOBHM flavor especially during the starting moments of the track. The track smoothly transitions to a mid-tempo gallop before exploding into a fireball of thrashy rhythms and Lira’s trademark vicious growls. The track does preserve the NWOBHM elements it introduced in the beginning but tones it down slightly. However, the real surprise comes at the end with almost two minutes of Fernanda Lira’s vocal performance with absolutely no instrumentation. Lira’s clean and soulful vocal performance is powerful to say the least and a great way to end the album. The aggression is relentless in ‘Agony’ except for this curve ball the band throws at you.“Intolerance Means War” brings the band’s chemistry to the forefront and shows us how tight the ladies sound together. Prika Amaral not only rips your face apart with sublime thrashy riffage and groovy hooks, but also gangs up with Lira to provide powerful backing vocals. “Guerra Santa” is one of the fastest tracks in the album and also one of my favorites. It is intense, brutal and definitely worthy of a mosh pit whenever it is played live. Nervosa introduce many clever twists in their compositions that will constantly surprise you. “Surrounded by Serpents” has a nice variation in the intro, slowing things down and giving off a Kerry King vibe, before transforming into a thrash monster and whipping up a supremely groovy ambience. Similarly the way “Cyberwar’s” bass intro explodes into the verse section, it will force you to raise those metal horns up and take you back to the glory days of Thrash Metal. The album is produced really well, mixing old school rawness with a touch of modern production. The distortion is chunky and crisp but does not lose the old school edge. The album spans a little over 45 minutes with 12 songs, but never during its course, it feels tiring or you feel that your mind drifts away.Nervosa have released a killer follow up to their debut album in ‘Agony’. It is full of thrashy goodness and old school nostalgia. We also see several new elements in the band’s artillery that will definitely make the fans rejoice. ‘Agony’ will most likely be one of the best Thrash Metal releases in this year. Do not miss it.

Album:

Brazil’s Nervosa have been dominating the spotlight in the thrash game for several years now, and for good reason. The three-piece immediately grabbed the attention of the world upon their release of their 2012 demo, which led to a deal with their current label, Napalm Records. Through Napalm, Nervosa have released two full length records in 2014 and 2015 – “Victim Of Yourself” and “Agony”, respectively. Both records were incredibly well received, and their third Napalm offering, “Downfall of Mankind” is set to perform just as well, if not better.Nervosa’s particular brand of thrash metal is a world away from Metallica or Testament. Rather, the trio led by front woman Fernanda Lira takes inspiration from a more underground, more visceral style of thrash. The influence of American cult favourites Nuclear Assault and Dark Angel can be clearly heard, but on even a cursory listen to any of Nervosa’s material, it is obvious that despite their Brazilian origins, their sound is very German. Hyper-aggressive thrash mixed with a very early incarnation of death metal was a template that built almost the entirety of the Teutonic thrash movement in the ‘80s in Germany, and it is a sound that Nervosa have carried since their first demo – and “Downfall of Mankind” is no different. With the exception of the atmosphere-building intro track, “Downfall of Mankind” is wall to wall ferocity, starting with the anthemic crusher “Horrordome” and not relenting until the closing notes of the bonus track, “Selfish Battle.” Lead single “Never Forget, Never Repeat” showcases the essence of Nervosa’s sound, mixing the unrestrained ferocity with a selection of hooks that are guaranteed to translate extremely well in a live environment. “Enslave” opens with a very strong, At The Gates/“Coma of Souls” era Kreator riff – this coupled with the Mille Petrozza and Schmier influenced rasp of Lira’s vocals further strengthens the link to Teutonic thrash Nervosa carry. One of the highlight tracks from “Downfall of Mankind” is doubtlessly “…And Justice For Whom?”. Tongue-in-cheek title aside, the track has a very early speed metal sound, sounding a little lighter in places than the death-thrash Nervosa are known for, though the trio bring in the heavier influence at just the right moments to give the track a truly crushing feel. “No Mercy” brings an intense, high-speed thrash banger to the table, while “Raise Your Fist!” is another track that will be an instant hit in the live environment – though the lyrics are perhaps a tad sloppy in comparison to the rest of “Downfall of Mankind.” Continuing their tradition, Nervosa close the standard edition of the record with an absolutely devastating track written in their native Portuguese – “Cultura do Estupro”.“Downfall of Mankind” was always going to be a vital record for Nervosa. With their third full length, this is Nervosa’s chance to prove that they are worthy of their place in the big leagues of metal, and to push them from a promising young band to one of the leaders of modern thrash. Their brand of Teutonic thrash, via Brazil, is refreshing – despite wearing its influence on its sleeve – and “Downfall of Mankind” is exactly the record Nervosa had to make. True to the style they have championed since their origin, while still keeping things interesting, “Downfall of Mankind” is a highly energetic, visceral and, above all, exceptionally enjoyable album, charged with social and political commentary and driven by a mountain of hyper-aggressive riffing. The future for Nervosa is very bright indeed.

Album:

On January 22, 2021, Brazilian thrash-death metal band Nervosa will release their fourth album called Perpetual Chaos. This title is apt given the hell of a year we have endured in 2020 with more chaos surely to follow in 2021. Nervosa have recorded a pulverizing morning star of iron riffs that run hot as molten steel. The caustic violence and savagery encapsulated in the music is intensely cathartic. While the overall sound of Nervosa is relatively unchanged, the makeup of the band has shifted dramatically. Founding guitarist Prika Amaral holds down the fort with her epic riff mastery. However, the foundational rhythm section is re-imagined with the addition of Mia Wallace (bass) and Eleni Nota (drums). Capping off the revitalized Nervosa on vocals is Diva Satanica. Together they create a new Nervosa that holds true to the bands tradition of blistering riffs and eviscerating vocals.Tearing out of the pit with malice is the lead track “Venomous”. These riffs will have you crushing every invisible orange as you clench your fists in a metal frenzy. This song allows you to get your first experience with drummer Eleni Nota. She is a metal machine. Kick drums blazing, Eleni propels every song with brutal force. Her drumming is spectacular and a key feature of Perpetual Chaos.Snarling with menace is the song “Guided By Evil”. The opening Slayer-esque riff exudes hostile intent. Diva Satanica uses a range of extreme vocals to convey feelings of malice, rage, and contempt throughout the album. Her vocal prowess compliments the songs without overpowering them.Nervosa bring in a couple of legendary vocalists to add some variety to Perpetual Chaos. “Genocidal Command” features guest vocals from Schimier (Destruction). His styling fit in well with the song structure. Erik A.K. (Flotsam and Jetsam) adds a bit of his awesome melodic power to the song “Rebel Soul”.While there is plenty to love about Perpetual Chaos, there are a few things that keep this from being a great album. You may notice that there is no mention of powerhouse bass player Mia Wallace. We can assume that she is locked in tight with Eleni Nota to drive the rhythm. Sadly, her playing is buried in the mix. The only time her work rises to the surface is briefly during the song “Pursued By Judgement”. It is a shame that we can’t enjoy her talent throughout the album. One other issue is the guest vocals on “Genocidal Command” and “Rebel Soul”. Not that there is any fault in the vocal performances. They are fine. However, these are fairly generic songs. It would make for a stronger album if these tunes offered more of a sonic and psychic punch.Perpetual Chaos by Nervosa is a pummeling war hammer of metal. While the band has been retooled, the driving force behind the bombardment of riffs remains. Nervosa stay true to their thrash meets death songwriting that calls to mind the mastery of Slayer, Sodom, and Destruction. They even have the legendary Schimier of Destruction and Erik A.K. of Flotsam and Jetsam adding their thrashing vocal chords. The primal energy of the music is great. Treat yourself to a thrash-tastic new year with this bludgeoning metal album.
