Bio:

Shah was a thrash metal band from Moscow, Russia (then still Soviet Union), which was founded in 1985. She was one of the first Russian bands of the genre and the first with completely English lyrics. The band was founded in 1985 by Antonio Garcia (electric guitar, vocals) after successfully completing the Moscow Jazz School. Andrei Sasonov, art student and passionate percussionist and Miguel "Garcia" Schemtschiuschij (bass, partly also singing) performed with Antonio Garcia their first concert in December 1986 in a Moscow club. The performance attracted great attention. The music was often compared to that of Metallica, although singer Garcia did not know this band.In a live concert, Waleri Gaina, the singer of speed metal band Kruiz, drew attention to the band. Gaina helped the band to larger performances and in 1987 the first Demo Escape from Mind was released on tape. After the release of the demo, Schemchtus left the band and left the position of singer Garcia. At first Vasili Moltanov took over the role of the bassist, then Andrei "ZZ Top" Girnik. Finally, Anatoli "Black Obelisk" Krupnow was thought to be the bassist's job.In the summer of 1988 the band toured Hungary and then began the work on the first album Beware. The demo with five songs also attracted attention in Western Europe. One signed a contract with the label Atom H Records. The album was recorded in Germany in the Red Line Studio (Munich) in November 1988 and produced by Waleri Gaina. Five days before the recording, bassist Anatoli Krupnow broke his hand, which is why the bass was last recorded. During the recording, the band gave a concert in Munich, which was recorded by the program Mosh (RTL Plus). In March 1989 Shah completed a tour, which included 30 concerts in cities all over Russia. The album was released in May via Atom H Records, and in Japan by Teichiku Records. This was followed by tours through Germany, Czechoslovakia and Hungary. In the summer of 1990 Alexei Owtschinnikow replaced the bassist Anatoli Krupnow, who returned to his band Black Obelisk. In 1991, the band recorded Terror Collection, a compilation of old and new songs. The album contained seven early works from 1985 to 1987, on which bassist Miguel Shemtschiuschij was a singer. Zhemchiushiy joined the band just for the recording and sang these songs for the compilation. The three singer-songwriters Antonio Garcia, In addition, Dmitri Saar joined the band as the second guitarist. In 1994, the band released the album Escape from Mind on cassette and the new album P..S.I.H.O., Both with Moroz Records. The band split in 1996. Antonio Garcia focused on his industrial project Descent and the first album Inclination.

Album:

Many images could be appropriated into the thrash metal medium, but if there is one that could truly capture its overall spirit, three free floating skulls screaming at every onlooker's face amid a surrounding reddish glare is about as close to perfection as it gets. Likewise, if there is one place where the rebellious and insubordinate character of thrash metal would be sure to find a home, it would be the depressed and suppressed land of the soon-to-be-over Soviet Union. Never mind that such an eventuality occurring in the 80s, let alone exclusively in English, would seem about as likely as being attacked by a polar bear and a grizzly bear at the same time in Central Park, New York, because it actually did happen, and with this many things already going for it, Shah and their menacing monster of a debut LP Beware are a sure winner even before the first note is struck. Sure enough, about 43 minutes after the fact any self-respecting fan of thrash metal is sure to come away with a whole new definition of the concept of winning. This is essentially the perfect marriage of Bay Area, gallop-happy goodness with the raw intensity and semi-death metal character of the extreme fringes of the Teutonic thrash scene, with Metallica and Destruction being the most likely comparisons. Much of the songwriting on here is on the longer side and conjures up parallels to Master Of Puppets, and actually improves upon the extremely mixed and flawed format of said album by eliminating a lot of subdued balladry and down-tempo meandering in favor of a more consistent thrash approach, maximizing the strong points as heard on Battery, Disposable Heroes and Damage Inc., as several songs on here exhibit the pummeling character in question. This tendency is mirrored by the lead guitar work, which sounds heavily geared towards the same venting, flashy soloing style heard out of Kirk Hammett between 1986 and 1988. At the same time, the rawer production, heavily present and glassy-toned bass work, more dissonant demeanor of things and the manic, heavily accented vocal work is definitely more in line with what was heard on Infernal Overkill and Eternal Devastation.Any one of these songs is an instant masterpiece that both mirrors and expands upon the obligatory hit material that tended to define mid-80s thrash, but there are a few particularly compelling places where the parallels are most obvious and the expansions upon existing practices are well played. "Age Of Dismay" could be chalked up to an answer to Metallica's "Battery", but longer and with more twists and turns, without the redundant acoustic intro and an even wilder guitar solo that employs elements of what Hammett did on "Four Horsemen" and "Blackened". The opening cruiser "Total Devastation" goes heavy on the galloping goodness in a manner all but befitting to Iced Earth and occasionally sounds like a more elaborate version of "Violate" about seven years after the fact. The similarly punchy title song "Beware" and the slightly faster more of the same biter "Coward" offer up similarly relentless packages of perpetual galloping chug riffs, leaving one to wonder if maybe this band ended up hanging things up in the mid 90s due to guitarist Antonio Garcia (not his real name) literally playing his picking hand clean off his wrist.Of all the bands that ended up taking on either most or some of their influences directly from Metallica and ended up with a somewhat similar sound, there's definitely a strong case to make that Shah took the cake with this album. It's one of those albums that, much like Eternal Nightmare and Beneath The Remains, takes a winning formula and refuses to deviate from it while still coming out with an album that avoids redundancy. Similarly, they also manage to throw in some comical elements like the goofy outro "Say Hi To Anthrax", consisting of a slightly sped up rendition of the "Among The Living" main riff and a series of rapped vocal tracks that are a dead ringer for what was heard on "I'm The Man", all while avoiding outright buffoonery or making it a dominant part of the package. It's a fairly obscure album that should definitely be enjoyed by any and all fans of 80s thrash metal, not the least of them being James Hetfield and Lars Urlich, both of whom could stand to take some pointers from this if they hope to win over some of their lost fans if they do manage to put out another album.
