Bio:

Michael Joseph Porcaro (May 29, 1955 – March 15, 2015) was an American bass player known for his work with Toto.He retired from touring in 2007 as a result of being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, also known as Motor Neurone Disease. He was the middle brother of Toto members Jeff Porcaro and Steve Porcaro. Their father is jazz drummer-percussionist Joe Porcaro.Porcaro worked as a session bass player before replacing Toto original bass player David Hungate in 1982 shortly after the band completed recording the Toto IV album. Porcaro played cello on a track for the album and subsequently appeared in the band's videos and performed as a full band member on the world tour in support of the album. He remained with the band until 2007.Along with Toto, Porcaro played numerous sessions in Los Angeles, and toured with Michael Franks on his first tour. He then toured with Seals and Crofts, Larry Carlton, and Boz Scaggs. He appears in the video for the song "JoJo" by Scaggs. In Flames bass player, Peter Iwers, said that his bass playing style was influenced by Porcaro.Porcaro stopped performing with Toto in 2007 after a growing numbness in his fingers that made it increasingly difficult for him to play. He was replaced by Leland Sklar for the remainder of the tour and Toto disbanded in 2008.On February 26, 2010, it was announced via official press release that Mike Porcaro was suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and that former band members of Toto, including Steve Porcaro, would reform and do a short tour through Europe in support of him in the summer of 2010.The regrouped Toto continued to tour and perform for Mike's benefit during 2011. Nathan East was the guest bass player for the 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 tours. In September 2012, it was reported in Classic Rock magazine that he was doing as well as could be expected with his disease, but he was in a wheelchair as the disease was progressing. On March 15, 2015, Porcaro died in his sleep at his home in Los Angeles from the disease. He was 59.He is interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles.

Album:

For almost a half century, the name Porcaro has been synonymous with musical greatness. It began with Papa Joe Porcaro, whose roots go back to gigging in Connecticut before transplanting and continuing his music career in Los Angeles. Soon to follow were three amazing prodigies who embraced the L. A. music scene in the mid to late 70’s and didn’t let go.Jeff, Mike and Steve Porcaro’s talents transcended their band TOTO and touched thousands of recordings for more than 4 decades. But their success in the music industry is only a small part of what makes the Porcaro family so special. When you consider the loss of Jeff in an accident in 1992 and the impact this had on the world of music and his fans - even to this day - I can’t imagine how this impacted the Porcaro family.MIKE PORCARO's “Brotherly Love” is a 2 CD set that was recorded live in Koblenz, Germany in 2002 as a tribute to Jeff.It features an all-star cast of musicians, including ex TOTO's Bobby Kimball, David Paich, Joseph Williams, rock legends Glenn Hughes, Alex Ligertwood, David Garfield, Greg Bissonette and more, and of course brother Steve Porcaro and father Joe Porcaro. The songs on this project cover many Porcaro influenced selections, including ones by TOTO, Boz Scaggs, Los Lobotomys, Al Green, Steely Dan, etc.The overall performance is simply outstanding. It's curious to listen the voice of rock Glenn Hughes singing (with Bobby Kimball) the TOTO classic "Rosanna". This version is spectacular, with more than 10 musicians involved. Killer guitar solo by Doug Bossi. But where Glenn Hughes really shines is on Hendrix's "Manic Depression", where his vocals really explodes, literally. Screaming guitar on this track and excellent drumming by Greg Bissonette. All songs are superb and are performed with class, featuring new arrangements and beautiful melodies. Mike’s groove is so deep-in-the-pocket-tight, but loose enough that his bass parts always seem to blend so nicely with everything.CD 2 features more jammin', where all are freely to show their virtuosity.Particularly "Big-Bone", an instrumental written by Jeff, is terrific. Drummer Steve Gadd did a great job fitting Jeff's shoes.According to Bobby Kimball, the musicians who were on the show hadn't realized it was being recorded, which adds freshness to this awesome double set."Brotherly Love" only was released in Japan, and this great double SHM-CD, unfortunately, it's out of print now. The few copies on sale at some record shops are reaching the $ 200, but if you are a rabid Toto fan, it worth the investment. On March 15, 2015, Mike Porcaro died in his sleep at his home in Los Angeles after years suffering amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. This post is a tribute to him - and his talented family - for the wonderful, first-class music they have delivered for decades.
