Bio:

Sinner are a German heavy metal band formed by vocalist and bassist Mat Sinner in 1982 (who later joined Primal Fear). They were part of the German heavy/speed/power metal scene. Their latest album, One Bullet Left, was released in 2011.Based in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Sinner released their first album, Wild'n'Evil in 1982. This album, along with the next two (Fast Decision and Danger Zone) were raw affairs, having little in common with the melodic metal they would later become known for. After many personnel changes (including drummer Edgar Patrik leaving to join Bonfire), the band saw the addition of Accept's Herman Frank on guitars and the release of Touch of Sin in 1985. Frank would leave before the next album, 1986's Comin' Out Fighting, with future U.D.O. guitarist Mathias Dieth replacing him.1987 saw the release of Dangerous Charm, a much more melodic album than previous efforts, but shortly after this the band took a break and wouldn't be heard of again for five years. In 1990 Mat Sinner released a solo album called Back to the Bullet on BMG with a completely new band. Three members of the Mat Sinner band reformed Sinner and released No More Alibis in 1992, an album far heavier than anything Sinner had released before. This renewed vigour coupled with songwriting that far exceeded the band's previous releases not only carried on but strengthened with Respect in 1994 and Bottom Line in 1995, the latter staying in the Japanese national charts for five weeks. Since the reformation the band's reputation had improved immensely, touring as support for bands such as Mr. Big and Savatage as well as headlining their own German tour and releasing a live album. Sinner were to reach even higher peaks though, releasing two hugely successful albums with Judgement Day in 1997 and The Nature of Evil in 1998 before touring Europe as support for rock giants Deep Purple. The Nature of Evil was the band's most successful album to date, reaching No. 63 in the German album charts. In 1998 Mat Sinner and Tom Naumann, who had been with Sinner since their reformation in 1992 formed Primal Fear with ex-Gamma Ray vocalist Ralf Scheepers. Mat Sinner has been involved as a driving force in both Sinner and Primal Fear to this day.

Mat Sinner (1987)

In 2000 the band saw its first line-up change in five years as several members left, including guitarist Tom Naumann while ex-Helloween and Gamma Ray's Uli Kusch filled in on drums for The End of Sanctuary. However, in 2003 the previous 1995–1999 line-up renewed itself and released There Will Be Execution before going quiet again for four years. In the past nine years the band had released six albums, each as good, if not better than the last, proving to be the band's most successful period. This success would continue, as after releasing two more albums with Primal Fear, an album with his pre-Sinner band Goddess Shiva and guesting on Tribuzy's debut album, Mat Sinner brought Sinner back to release Mask of Sanity in 2007. This album spawned two popular singles in "Diary of Evil" and "Black" and included a faithful rendition of Thin Lizzy's "Baby Please Don't Go".

Album:

Even though band boss Mat Sinner is involved in many musical projects (just mentioning Primal Fear, the Rock Meets Classic project and Voodoo Circle, he always finds the time to also release albums with his band Sinner. In 2013, "Touch Of Sin 2", a collection of re-recorded Sinner classics from the 80s plus a few new songs, was following the 2011 album "One Bullet Left". Now it's time again for an all new songs Sinner studio album. "Tequila Suicide" was produced by Mat Sinner and Dennis Ward. Expect a full dose of tracks in typical Sinner style, with a few surprises added here and there, like the fine bluesy rock ballad "Sinner Blues". "Tequila Suicide" combines great songwriting with a mighty, organic sound. Numerous high class guest musicians (Gus G. of Ozzy Osbourne & Firewind, Ricky Warwick of The Almighty & Thin Lizzy and Pete Lincoln (Sailor, Sweet) were contributing to Sinner's newest piece of work. The German hard 'n' heavy legend is back! After my discovery of Sinner thanks to 2013’s Touch Of Sin 2 record, I’ve counted them among bucket list live bands. That release featured re-records of classic Sinner material from the early days of the back catalog as those albums are long out of print. Oh yeah, for those unaware as I was until 2013, Sinner has been issuing albums since 1982! While not attaining mainstream success, especially over here in North America, Sinner can’t be stopped. They have consistently delivered new Hard Rock over a whopping 20 or so albums. And now their latest creation SINNER – Santa Muerte arrives September 13, 2019, via AFM Records. For this outing Sinner have enlisted some guests for the record. Swedish guitarist/co-songwriter Magnus Karlsson (Primal Fear, Allen/Lande) appears on “Death Letter”. Ronnie Romero (Ritchie Blackmore´s Rainbow, Lords Of Black) whose voice features on “Fiesta Y Copas”, the first single. Ricky Warwick‘s (The Almighty, Thin Lizzy, Black Star Riders) unique voice can be heard on “What Went Wrong”. But there’s yet another new voice as well. This one is a new, permanent addition to the Sinner camp in Giorgia Colleluori. After an invitation to join Sinner on stage for three songs during shows in a few countries, the audience’s reactions led Mat Sinner in asking her to join permanently.Sinner - Santa MuerteThings blast off with “Shine On”. At first, not reading the press release ahead of listening, the female vocals snapped me to attention. I wasn’t expecting that! Musically, the track is all the hard-rocking smash that I’ve come to expect from Sinner. The dulcet tones of Colleluori add a fantastic dimension and layer making this one of the best opening tracks I’ve heard in some time. The rest of the album rocks just as much. Take the lead single “Fiesta Y Copas” for example. You can check that song out via the video link below. Google translate reports that to mean “Party and Cups”, not sure of the accuracy there. Likewise googling “Santa Muerte” returns “Holy Death”. Right or wrong, it’s an epic song rocking for over six minutes. One thing Sinner does very, very well are the vocal harmonies. Now with Colleluori in the mix that’s really exemplified here on this album. The second single release, “Last Exit Hell” is a great example of soaring vocal harmonies over some grinding guitar riffs. Guest vocalist Ricky Warwick lends his talents on the naturally Thin Lizzy flavoured “What Went Wrong”.The album remains consistent throughout, but worth noting is “Death Letter”. A cover song originally by delta blues icon Son House, who recorded it in 1965. This song has also been recorded by The White Stripes and John Mellencamp among many others. The whole album is a hard rock feast littered with guitar riffs, pulsating bass lines, steadily thumping drum beats and the aforementioned vocal harmonies. While never selling tons of records, Sinner has consistently issued great hard rock albums over the years and this is another fine addition to the catalogue.
