Bio:

Grave Digger, which originated in the glorious 80's heavy metal band is back with a new album! After touring across the world and numerous albums released in the last three decades, the Metal veteran now presents even more of his best and most importantly hardest page: "Return of The Reaper" goes back to the roots and is dedicated to the band classics such as "Heavy Metal Breakdown" (1984), "Witch Hunter" (1985) and "The Reaper" (1993).Dynamic, simple and unique show Gravedigger why they still enjoy playing a pioneering role in the field of heavy metal when it comes to producing good, Teutonic steel.

Album:

The metal genre, comprised of a hundred and one subgenres, seems to be growing exponentially these days. Every time I sign on to Facebook I am getting invites to like a friend’s new band, messages to check out this band’s new song, getting invited to the latest tour that has been announced. How many times have we heard that metal is dead (or dying) because of the new world of instant gratification and digital (and pirated) music? How many drunk and jaded dudes in camo cargo shorts and Adidas sandals whine about it to you at your local metal shows? Well I for one, see and hear it all the time, and I am so tired of it. Metal isn’t dead – it is evolving and adjusting to our new on-demand world. Truth be told, not a lot of classic ‘heavy metal’ bands have stuck around, despite some of them still clinging to that one successful album they had in 1986. But let’s talk about one of those classic bands that DID stick around – Grave Digger.Grave Digger has been around for nearly forty years – yes you read that right – 40 YEARS. Founded in 1980, the band has released nothing but solid, crushing heavy metal albums including my personal favorites, “The Reaper” and “Tunes of War”. One can’t deny however, the band has grown significantly darker in sound over the years, but strangely, they remain as one of the few classic heavy metal bands that can still write relevant and catchy metal tunes. Their newest release ‘The Living Dead’, set to be released in September of 2018, is a great new addition to their extensive library of great metal albums. It doesn’t take a genius to see that this album has some dark themes, given the grim artwork (a tiny zombie girl wielding a bloody knife – I mean come on). So right off the bat, the album opens with the semi-title track “Fear of the Living Dead” and the tone of the album is set. The song is a perfect way to open the new record, with a great layered chorus, awesome sing-along hooks, and fantastic guitar riffs. “Blade of the Immortal” is a killer track that begins with some of the best atmospheric guitar work on the record, and I absolutely love the chanting chorus. This one is working its way up my ‘Favorite Grave Digger Tracks of all Time’ list for sure (what, don’t you have one of those?).“The Power of Metal” is exactly what it sounds like – yet another metal anthem. The lyrics are just a little cringey, but the drive of the song is catchy and has some cool bass lines. No, this album isn’t one of their strongest, it isn’t groundbreaking or genre defining, and feels slightly formulaic. I can’t hold it against the band though. It’s been forty successful years using a similar formula, why change it now? What the band did do however, was add a good bit of surprise and evolution in, especially with one of my favorite tracks on the record, “Zombie Dance” which is a heavy metal dance collaboration with label-mates Russkaja. This unique track will please classic Grave Digger fans, but also satisfy those that desire a little bit more from the band.Overall, the legendary Chris Boltendahl sounds as gritty and bad ass as ever, Jens Becker and Stefan Arnold keep that rhythm driving hard, Marcus Kniep is great on the keys, but I think Axel Ritt really steals the show on the guitars here. Its no surprise that a legendary heavy metal band has a phenomenal guitarist – but each moment this album made me take a step back and say ‘DAAAMN’ was a killer guitar riff or solo. ‘The Living Dead’ is a solid release from these veterans and is absolutely worth a purchase – but even bigger and better news is that the band plans to take this album on the road for “Tour of the Living Dead” – celebrating 40 YEARS OF GRAVE DIGGER in concert halls around the world!
