Bio:

Slave Raider was an American Hard rock band formed in 1985 that was known for its over-the-top antics, heavy make-up and glam song lyrics. In the 1980s, the Minneapolis music scene was primarily known for The Replacements, Soul Asylum, Hüsker Dü and Prince among others. In the Twin Cities, Slave Raider had a sizeable following that were known as "The Raid". They opened for such 1980s bands as Ratt and Poison with the original lineup. The band recorded three albums in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but were never able to make much of a dent in the glam metal scene of the time due to the beginning of the grunge movement that has been attributed to the influence of their fellow Minnesotans, The Replacements. The band was dropped by its record label following their third album release in 1990 and broke up soon after that with the band members going on to solo projects. The original line up has periodically reunited since then to perform the occasional reunion show that is always "standing room only".The song "Youngblood", written by Slave Raider members and performed by Slave Raider, appeared in the 1994 movie entitled The Paper, which was nominated for an Oscar.Slave Raider's "Make Some Noise" (written by Slave Raider and D. Nagel) appeared in 1988's License to Drive.

Album:

When the world was awash with Glam/Shock Rock bands, another band from Minneapolis decided to join the circus. Formed in the year 1985, the band was known for its "heavy make-up, over-the-top antics and glam lyrics"! SLAVE RAIDER recorded and released three albums in the 80's, " Take The World By Storm" in 1986, "What Do You know About Rock 'N Roll" in 1988, and "Bigger Badder and Bolder" in 1990 before calling it quits. The band has opened for Glam bands like RATT and POISON. As with every other band that sounded like every other band at that time, they were wiped out by the arrival of Grunge. The band members went about their way on to solo careers and other personal pursuits. DiveBomb Records re-released the first two albums in 2015, and in the year 2016, the re-released, "Bigger Badder and Bolder", with two bonus tracks."Bigger, Badder & Bolder", the title track and the first track of the album, is a good example of the lyrical content of the songs of that era. It’s a song for the "rebel from the wrong side of the track". The track urges you to be bigger, badder and bolder during its course and also includes threatening people if they have a problem with the band, is what I am assuming! It also includes a blink-and-you-miss-it funky bass melody in its midst."D.O.A (Dead On arrival)", starts off like a ballad with wailing guitar sound and is about "Johnny" and his friends out about town drinking and they have an unfortunate accident. It has the usual suspects of an 80's song; high pitched backing vocals and a mournful guitar solo.Who Owns America" has a bit of the American national anthem in the beginning and is a rant about all things messed up in the U.S. It was probably written as an arena song with hopes that the crowds will sing along chanting the chorus. One of the bonus tracks in the album is "Win Twins Win", which is actual reworking of "TNT" by AC/DC. The band has “cleverly” redone the words but has retained the melody as a tribute to the Minnesota Twins, an American Baseball Team.Listening to the album, I was transported into the world of spandex, puffed up hair, and androgynous dudes singing songs of debauchery and hedonism. Except that world has long since moved on from that a long time ago. It is painfully obvious that there are still fans out there for this kind of music, which is why DiveBomb Records has gone out on a limb and re-issued the band's whole catalogue. However, it is a mystery to me who would really buy the album, other than die hard fans of the band, and maybe local friends of the band. Back in the 80's the band had a sizeable following and named themselves, "The Raid". The music and lyrics is quite competent but it’s hard to find anything original about the songs. The vocalist tries hard to sound like David Coverdale and the band like WHITESNAKE, but they don't quite hit the mark. Give this album a listen only if you re stuck in the 80's and can’t get enough of the Glam/Hair scene.
