Album:

While currently on yet another successful World Tour, this time to support their latest studio-album »Pariah’s Child«, Finnish Melodic Metal heroes SONATA ARCTICA swung by the studio to re-record their debut album »Ecliptica«, which was released 15 years ago. This new version will be released on October 24th under the banner »Ecliptica – Revisited; 15th Anniversary Edition« on Nuclear Blast.Back then, »Ecliptica« was recorded at Tico-Tico studios and mixed at Finnvox by Mikko Karmila (NIGHTWISH, CHILDREN OF BODOM and more). The album was promoted live on tour with STRATOVARIUS and RHAPSODY.Henrik „Henkka“ Klingenberg comments: “When it first was suggested to us by our Japanese label that we'd re-record our debut album »Ecliptica«, it felt a bit weird, but somehow the idea grew on us. Being that only Tony and Tommy played on the original one, we thought that it would be a fun thing to do, to give these great songs another run. We're definitely not trying to re-write history, the original »Ecliptica« is the starting point of this band and a very special album with a certain feel of innocence and enthusiasm which cannot be recreated as such since we're not teenagers anymore. Having said that, this new version is more of a tribute and an update on how these songs sound when played by our current line-up. We wanted to stay true to the original album as much as possible and not turn this into some weird re-arranged project where you couldn't tell which song was being played. So here it is, the 15th anniversary version of »Ecliptica«. Hope you enjoy it, we certainly had a good time digging into these songs and laying down the tracks

Album:

Finnish melodic metal heroes Sonata Arctica are pleased to release a very special Christmas gift for their fan base: a brand new single called ‘Christmas Spirits’.This year the handing out of presents is happening early!Sonata Arctica commented on the single:“Hello everyone out there!Christmas is just around the corner so we decided to cheer you all up with a nice Christmas story. “Decided” might be a bit strong in this context since the ‘Christmas Spirits’ song has been around for about ten years now, we just never had the time to record it. Finally during the ‘Pariah’s Child’ sessions we managed to do the basic tracks and this autumn we finished the song. I guess the main reason for the delay was getting the lyrics done, it’s nearly impossible to get into the Christmas mood unless it’s actually… you guessed it, Christmas. Hats off to Tony since he did it anyway, this autumn, and without any snow, we might add. Be that as it may, here’s our latest piece of art: Christmas Spirits!Sonata Arctica’s latest studio album ‘Pariah’s Child’ was released in 2014 via Nuclear Blast. It was the bands’ eighth studio album – and the follow up to their previously successful release ‘Stones Grow Her Name’. This latest release saw Sonata Arctica returning to their metal roots – moving away from the more hard rock approach of its predecessor. Some might say the record is a good definition of the band past and present, predominantly showcasing their straight up melodic metal style.‘Pariah’s Child’ was recorded and produced by the whole band itself – without any outsiders being involved apart from a couple of guest performances. It was mixed by bass player Pasi Kauppinen. The album artwork hails back to the band’s past, containing symbolism of the figure 8 and containing their totem animal the wolf.

Album:

Finnish melodic metal quintet SONATA ARCTICA will release its ninth album, titled "The Ninth Hour", on October 7 via Nuclear Blast. Once again, the CD was produced by SONATA ARCTICA themselves and mixed by Pasi Kauppinen to create a typical yet refreshing sound that defines the spirit of the band in the year 2016."The studio work for the new record started seriously in mid-April 2016 in several home studios around Finland," SONATA ARCTICA singer Tony Kakko explains. "But the main recording and mixing took place at the Studio57 in Alaveteli, Finland. It functions as a kind of centre point and all work finally ends up there. We aimed to create another melodic, beautiful, surprising SONATA ARCTICA album… Did it turn out that way? I surely think so. But maybe I should leave that for you to decide!"After a North American tour with their friends from NIGHTWISH plus many headline shows around the globe, the band was once again able to take a look at the entire world as it is at the moment — on the edge of a possible armageddon. This spirit is reflected in the artwork of "The Ninth Hour"."The artwork of our ninth studio album, 'The Ninth Hour', depicts a future utopian landscape on the background," adds Tony. "Nature and human technologies are in balance. In the middle we have an hour glass contraption with a knob for us to meddle with. The right-hand side cup represents the nature side with no humans left, on the left we have the human dystopia after we have destroyed Nature. The idea I had was, that turning the knob will tilt the hour glass in one direction or another, and the other cup will slowly empty and that future will be erased. Biblically we are expected to repent and sacrifice on 'The Ninth Hour'… to dive right back to a more mundane reality, it's a fact that we are currently living in critical, historical times. Our decisions will define the future. Not only ours as a race, but the future of this entire planet. We need to make sacrifices and in many cases we will repent our already made choices."Right after the summer festival season and the release of "The Ninth Hour", the band will embark on a European tour together with their labelmates TWILIGHT FORCE to present the new songs to their fans.

Sonata Arctica is a Finnish power metal band from the town of Kemi, Finland. Created as a hard rock band named Tricky Beans, they later changed to Tricky Means and finally to Sonata Arctica, when they shifted to power metal. They often include symphonic metal elements, and their later releases contain several elements typical of progressive metal, as well. The current line-up consists of singer, keyboardist and songwriter Tony Kakko, guitarist Elias Viljanen, bass guitarist Pasi Kauppinen, keyboardist and keytarist Henrik Klingenberg, and drummer Tommy Portimo. All the musicians of the band's history except Portimo (and possibly new bassist Kauppinen) also acted as backing vocalists. As of early 2014, the band has released seven full-length albums (three via Spinefarm Records and four via Nuclear Blast) and are now expecting to release their eight studio work, Pariah's Child, on March 28,. 2014."With Pariah's Child Sonata Arctica focus finally back to what they were before: one of the crazy the most, but most endearing bands ever!" Album:

On September 6th, Finnish melodic metal titans SONATA ARCTICA will release their tenth studio album, called ‘Talviyö‘ (which means Winter Night), including eleven new tracks, this Japanese edition including an exclusive bonus track.“The idea was to create an album that is musically in line with at least the previous two”, says vocalist Tony Kakko and adds: “I am very happy with the songs and the general mood of the album. Some career highlights there, I feel.”“We recorded a bunch of kick ass songs and tried some new stuff as well. I’m really proud of how we managed to record the band sounding more live, playing together instead of just tracking everything one by one”, states Henrik “Henkka” Klingenberg.‘Talviyö’ was recorded between September 2018 and May 2019, produced by Mikko Tegelman and SONATA ARCTICA in ‘Studio57’. Additional recordings took place in various other places.“Mikko produced the album and he really managed to push us to do our best, even with the more experimental stuff. Working with an outside producer was the biggest new thing we tried this time”, says Henrik “Henkka” Klingenberg. The mixing was done by Mikko Tegelman and Pasi Kauppinen and the mastering was handled by Svante Forsbäck for ‘Chartmakers’.

Album:

So-called acoustic albums can be hit and miss. Sometimes the music simply doesn’t lend itself to being stripped of its bombast and other times the arrangements are simply too far removed from what made the original number great. It’s rarely a case of the original material being lacking, but for every ALICE IN CHAINS Unplugged, there’s a HELLOWEEN Unarmed out there somewhere (there’s a reason Andi Deris himself has vocally distanced himself from that one). In the case of Finnish power metal stalwarts SONATA ARCTICA and Acoustic Adventures – Volume One, we have an album that thankfully sits in the former camp.Perhaps that’s not that surprising, though. Over the course of two-plus decades, Tony Kakko and his band of morose melody makers have played around with the notion of what a “metal” band should be, organically shifting their sound from flat-out power metal to icy melodic rock and everything in-between. Despite some dramatic sonic shifts in that time though, SONATA ARCTICA have always had a definable constant in Kakko’s song-writing, with expertly crafted vocal melodies and piano lines leading the charge for whatever flavour of instrumentation is seen fit to follow. The focus of vocals and keys being at the fore allows SONATA ARCTICA to naturally modify themselves again, reinterpreting an almost career-spanning range of tracks into serene mixes of folk, pop and even occasional bluegrass, all the while still sounding exactly like SONATA ARCTICA, thanks to dense pianos, wintery synths and Kakko’s unmistakable voice. On the note of material, it’s worth addressing the midsize elephant in the room. Two thirds of the song selections here are pulled from Unia onwards, often judgementally seen as a divisive turning point in SONATA ARCTICA’s discography. While that perception has lessened over time, those looking for early years’ classics will be sorely disappointed as Ecliptica goes wholly unrepresented. Yet, while it would be lovely to hear some of those numbers re-spun here, Acoustic Adventures doesn’t suffer for it. If anything, the tracklist choices made here invite older school fans to re-evaluate the more recent side of the band’s oeuvre, as their rearrangement allows a number of these songs to shine in ways they simply didn’t before.Take a song like Alone In Heaven; always a solid number, but perhaps not necessarily top tier SONATA material. The version here is stripped back to acoustic guitars, classical pianos and gospel-infused synths and takes on all-round different quality, deftly swaying between menacing, upbeat and remorseful in equal measure. With its earworm of a chorus given more breathing room, it’s hard to argue this isn’t the definitive version of Alone In Heaven. Elsewhere on the album, Talviyö’s A Little Less Understanding and Unia’s Paid In Full are channelled through the guise of a pub back-room’s folk band, adding rustling drums, bumping basslines and even banjo accompaniments. While not overly significant changes, they both benefit surprisingly well from the underlying jig they now bear and prove a delight.Unsurprisingly, the most dramatic changes come with some of the band’s heavier cuts. The love-spurned Don’t Say A Word has its crunchy guitars removed, allowing its dramatic piano line to take far more prominence. Bolstered by textures of strings, softened drums and rattling acoustic guitars, Don’t Say A Word changes from a fast paced shout to seething rage and works brilliantly. Less effective is the pseudo-bluegrass of Wolf & Raven which is arguably the album’s only real misfire. The song keeps its original tempo, with the spiralling lead guitar now transferred to piano, but the band feel slightly like they’re tripping over themselves to keep it lively. It’s a shame, as the musicianship is impressive, but something is simply lost on Wolf & Raven – still, it’s certainly improvement over the bonus track on Silence’s 2008 reissue!Bar the very rare blip though, Acoustic Adventures is a consistently and seamless revitalisation of SONATA ARCTICA’s material. It can’t be understated that a huge part of this is simply down to the performance of the band across the album. The whole session feels more like a very polished live gig rather than something overly fiddled with in the studio. Even on songs where the arrangement changes are limited, there is a warmth and energy to the delivery on Acoustic Adventures that sparks new life in to the material. Stones Grow Her Name’s Tonight I Dance Alone is fairly faithful structurally, but replacing the guitar with piano and gospel synths transform it from an alt-rock version of TONI BRAXTON’s Un-Break My Heart to a power ballad proper. Similarly, modern SONATA ARCTICA deliver an expertly matured version of Talullah that lessens some of the cheesier pomp of the original in favour of transforming it into the prerequisite second act ballad of a Broadway show. In this acoustic setting, Kakko turns in one of the best vocal performances of his career, with the restrained instrumentation truly shining a spotlight on his naturally emotive and charismatic delivery.Taken as a whole, Acoustic Adventures – Volume One is nothing short of an unexpected and extremely pleasant surprise, with these stripped-down versions showing how strong the underlying song-writing is across the band’s body of work. SONATA ARCTICA have produced a sterling example of what an acoustic album should be, and one that is suitably fitting for one of melodic metal’s most idiosyncratic bands. Not only will newer fans enjoy hearing expertly tweaked versions of songs they know well, but hopefully lapsed fans will discover something they’ve missed in the band’s recent history. Bring on Volume Two.

Album:

Determined to keep the momentum rolling after the first instalment, SONATA ARCTICA are back with Acoustic Adventures – Volume Two less than a year later. If Volume One passed you by, the Acoustic Adventures series sees the SONATA ARCTICA gang pick selects from their discography and reinterpret them as far more stripped-down affairs. Double-kick pedals are replaced with delicate percussion, ripping distorted guitars are usurped in favour of bright acoustics and sci-fi synths are shunned in favour of… well, different synths. All of this led by the familiar croon of vocalist Tony Kakko as he gently pulls the listener through the warmly morose tales that make up SONATA ARCTICA’s body of work.As with Volume One, the song choices here span the gamut of SONATA ARCTICA’s career. However, compared to its predecessor, Volume Two’s curated track list skews more towards the band’s earlier material. Many of these choices remain faithful to their original incarnation with the melancholic shuffle of tracks like Winterheart Guild’s Broken having always been tailor-made for an acoustic rendition. Similarly, Silence’s Black Sheep steadfastly holds on to the elaborate harmonised guitar and synth lead that shapes the song, although the band breathe new life into is chorus by infusing it with a jazzy swing.Amongst the legacy choices is early classic San Sebastian, unsurprisingly stripped of its lightning-fast guitars and pummelling drums. Instead, the song takes on a lounge-ballad feel, oozing the kind of melodramatic charm best accompanied by karaoke bar video montages of wistful souls staring into the distance. Perhaps the best of these historical tracks however is the Ecliptcia classic, Letter To Dana. Obviously always a ballad through and through, Letter To Dana was a surprising omission from Volume One. It’s always been a slightly ridiculous song, and nothing has changed with this pared down iteration. But devoid of its ringing power chords and harpsichord-synth pomp, Letter To Dana delivers more fully on its haunting sincerity on Acoustic Adventures. Part of that is down to Kakko’s performance, with his deeper tone and gritted belting towards the end giving the song more depth – it’s one of the album’s highest moments, undoubtedly.Less represented here are SONATA ARCTICA’s more recent releases, with the most modern cut being Half A Marathon Man from 2014’s Pariah’s Child. A light-hearted ode to taking up running, its manifestation here is oddly mesmerising. Still boasting a thick and meaty bass line, this time underneath a swaggering piano, Half A Marathon Man takes on all the trappings of an action film montage song – replete with the album’s only distorted guitar solo. One-time single Flag In The Ground also makes a welcome appearance. Despite its squeaky 8-bit synth and banjo-driven bounce, the song’s bittersweet story comes across far more endearingly than on The Days Of Grays, providing another surprise highlight for Volume Two.Not every cut is a rousing success, mind. WolfMoon suffers by not committing to one direction, for instance. Starting as a gothic ballad, SONATA ARCTICA try to infuse it with the same high-energy change of pace as the original, resulting in a mess of elaborate piano lines and confusingly fast acoustic guitars. Gravenimage on the other hand has the opposite problem, doubling down on the song’s mellower tendencies to create something that wouldn’t sound entirely out of place on an IRON & WINE album. Reckoning Night’s Shamandalie takes that even further, with its power ballad inflections mostly replaced by a twee electric piano and little else. Still, even the less successful songs are interesting experiments and you can’t fault SONATA ARCTICA for making creative choices, even if they don’t work out. While perhaps not as consistently strong an offering overall as Volume One, this chapter of Acoustic Adventures has plenty of charm and yet again does a great job of demonstrating how flexible and strong SONATA ARCTICA’s song-writing has been through the years. Compared to its forerunner, Volume Two makes good on representing much more of the band’s classic output, often to great effect. It’s a great way to revisit some of power metal’s best material in a suitably more autumnal evening guise.

Album:

Sonata Arctica is back in full force! Fueled by enthusiastic reations to the recent digital single "First In Line", the melodic metal quintet is pleased to provide the first details about of the long-awaited new studio album, titled "Clear Cold Beyond". The album contains 10 tracks reviving the band's penchant for power metal-esque tunes following the trip to acoustic landscapes during the pandemic. "Clear Cold Beyond" is packed with strong songs and fuses the best of all periods of Sonata Arctica's multifaceted work. From high-speed anthems such as the aforementioned "First In Line" and "California" to emotion-laden tracks such as "The Best Things" and the closing title track, this record offers something for each and every Sonata Arctica fan. The album's artwork, reminiscent of the early works, was created by Niko Anttila and the band returned to mixing engineer Mikko Karmila (Finnvox Studios; "Ecliptica" & "Stones Grow Her Name"). The final mastering was handled by Svante Forsbäck (Chartmakers West; Rammstein, Korpiklaani, Delain, The 69 Eyes, Deathstars, etc.), who has also been part of other Sonata Arctica productions.Singer Tony Kakko comments: "We've felt for a while now that we needed to get heavier after a couple of unintentionally softer albums. We still love those albums, but in terms of finding cornerstone songs for a feel good melodic metal show, the previous album didn't have much to offer. We're getting back to metal after all that feels like a fresh start and the new songs have been so much fun to write and record: more speed and songs that people can and want to sing along to. We can't wait to hit the road with this album and see how the crowds react to us being back at it."
