Bio:

Iron Savior is a German power metal band that formed in Hamburg, Germany in 1996. Following a period of several years working behind the scenes in music production, multi-instrumentalist and producer/engineer Piet Sielck joined with former Helloween bandmate Kai Hansen and then-drummer for Blind Guardian Thomen Stauch in a new project that would blend power metal with a high-concept science fiction story. The band's debut album Iron Savior introduced the story that would be told over the course of multiple albums, featuring a self-aware space vessel called the Iron Savior and its relationship to the mythical lost civilization of Atlantis.Critics have compared Iron Savior's sound and musical approach to classic heavy metal bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Queensrÿche.Kai Hansen's presence in the band brought to the Iron Savior albums on which he appeared a style heavily influenced by Gamma Ray and Helloween.Since its inception, Iron Savior has released eight studio albums, two EPs, and two singles.Despite numerous lineup changes, Piet Sielck has continued to direct the band and is currently the only remaining founding member. On February 28, 2014, the band will release their newest album Rise of the Hero via AFM Records.

Album:

Iron Savior is set to release the "Megatropolis 2.0" album in April via AFM Records. The label issued this statement:"Not one, but two new Iron Savior products are set to arrive in the next few months! We already announced the band's first ever live DVD/CD a while ago, but before that, a new version of the 'Megatropolis' album, tilted 'Megatropolis 2.0' (which comes with a new mix and a lot of re-recordings) will be released on April 24th."Iron Savior's Piet Sielck also comments: "AFM has informed me that our 'Megatrolis' album is sold out, so the idea came up to rework the material and release a new edition. Being unhappy with the album for a long time, I am absolutely delighted to get a chance to correct my errors. The new mix will carry all Iron Savior trademarks such as big choir backings and lots of multi timbral vocals. I left all these goodies out at the time to make the album more distinguishable from my former second band Savage Circus... a fatal error, which I finally can correct now."Iron Savior doesn't get nearly enough credit for the aggressive power metal they play. Always a shadow in the mighty Gamma Ray and Helloween, Iron Savior have put out just as many powerful and amazing albums as either. Megatropolis is justification to this claim.Another amazing release, Megatropolis, holds its own with any power metal band. Its aggressive nature brings a little thrash tendency to so of the music but in the end its undeniably a solid and well written album. Very few albums get better towards the end and this is one of them. As the album continues the stakes are raised higher and higher. The guitar work as said before does have a slight lean towards a thrash sound. A good solid basis on riffs helps with that sound. There are plenty of power chords to go around like any great power metal record but there are some killer headbangers in the guitar work. The leads are well complimenting to the structure of the music and both guitars are well adapted to fast and clean fret work. The solos are very much that Judas Priest trade off fashion where one guitar will solo followed by the second guitar and in the end coming together flawlessly. The bass and drum work are well composed and work well with the music. While other power metal bands use the drums to keep the pace when the guitars do a melodic section, Iron Savior doesn't really need that on Megatropolis. The guitars are quick enough and the music isn't as melodic to require a heavy dependency on the drum and bass work as grounding. The bass work is good with the bass being the solid structure and foundation for a lot of the songs. The vocals are a strong on Megatropolis. The darker tone to the vocals (as compared to most of the falsettos in power metal today) really fit well with the music. Having a second singer as a backing vocalist also adds quite a bit of dynamic to the vocal tracks. The singing is also quite varied on the album (there is even a section of spoken German...?) and will keep the attention of most metal fans. There was a lot of speculation on whether or not Iron Savior would survive after Kai Hansen left the band in 2001. This has since been proven absurd with every release and Megatropolis is nothing different for the band. Another amazing and solid release that is most likely going to be overlooked.Songs to check out: Megatropolis, Cyber Hero, Still I Believe.

Piet Sielck - Vocals, Guitars (1996-present) - See also: ex-Savage Circus, ex-Gentry, ex-Second Hell

It took almost 20 years for German power metal masters IRON SAVIOR to release their first Live DVD/CD "Live At The Final Frontier". The band, founded in 1996 by Piet Sielck, Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray) and Thomen Stauch (ex-Blind Guardian), has unleashed eight studio albums since then and has just recently issued a reworked version (remixed, remastered, partly re-recorded) of their “Megatropolis” album, titled “Megatropolis 2.0”. Now with their first ever DVD, IRON SAVIOR will satisfy their fans again completely: “Live At The Final Frontier” includes the band’s recent hometown concert (Hamburg, January 2015) on DVD and 2CDs (as package in Digipak format). Additional bonus (video) material (backstage/concert) rounds off this extensive package, which is a must-have for all IRON SAVIOR fans!

Album:

Nothing clings quite so tenaciously to life as a Germanic metal band. Think about it for a moment – all the big names in 80s Kraut thrash are still active, along with nearly all of their 80s power and traditional acts. In essence, Teutonic metal is harder to kill than nail fungus and just as unsightly. Though Iron Savior didn’t come into existence until 97, they’ve proven typically resilient and hard to eradicate, dropping album after album of sci-fi themed Euro-power, mostly centered on a massive, sentient spacecraft known as…Iron Savior. Titancraft is the 9th installment in this sci-fi soap saga and it comes on the heels of 2014s Rise of the Hero, which was their best selling platter to date, but one of their least interesting IMHO. Luckily, Titancraft is like a refresher course on all the things that made Iron Savior such fist-pumping fun on albums like Unification and Dark Assault. It’s 100% Euro-cheese, but delivered with such flair and conviction you’ll learn to tolerate the lactose and come back for more. After a short, table setting intro, the good ship Savior lifts off once again with bombast and grandiosity to spare on the winning title track. Guided by the atypically gravely and rough vocals of founder Piet Sielk, the music is aggressive, speedy and full of big, over-the-top moments and the epic chorus is the Mack Daddy (and coincidentally, the Daddy Mack). If you’ve heard any prior release you know it’s a lot like old Helloween but heavier and more…manly. This is exactly the music you want from them and it’s a killer tune reminiscent of their classic albums. From there they stick with the kind of songs that have always worked for them and “Way of the Blade,” “Seize the Day” and “The Sun Won’t Rise in Hell” all find that crucial balance between cheese and chest hair while making sure the choruses are big, memorable and generally uplifting. The standout track is the excellent “Beyond the Horizon” which could sit alongside the best of their catalog. It’s a lot like what Gamma Ray was churning out in the late 90s/early aughts and it has the kind of epic ridiculousness that makes you wield household objects as medieval weaponry. The only songs that stray a bit from the righteous path are the predictable amusing power ballad “I Surrender” and the wild west themed “Gunsmoke.” The former because ballads are not the forte of the band and the latter because it’s just so painfully silly. That said, both songs grow with repeat spins and I’m grudgingly coming to like even the cringe-inducing balladry. At 50 minutes Titancraft feels about the right length and it’s so catchy it doesn’t ever feel overlong. Production-wise it has that same over-produced, glossy sound all the Iron Savior albums do and that’s fine. At this point it would be silly to expect some raw, primal sound from the Lords of Studio Excess. As always, I enjoy Piet’s voice and vocal style. He doesn’t sound like every other Euro-weenie screamer and his more masculine delivery grounds the music in traditional metal. Over his career he’s proven himself skilled at crafting catchy vocal hooks and patterns and he hits the mark with big choruses more often than not. While I felt this particular element was missing on Rise of the Hero, it’s here in spades. Piet and Joachim Kustner have a history of writing zippy, aggressive power metal riffs and there are plenty here to sink your teeth into. They keep the riffing heavier than 99% of their ilk and this differentiates their sound in positive ways. The drums always had a somewhat programmed sound to them, as they do here, though performed by long time kit-minder Thomas Nack. It isn’t a big issue, but a more organic sound would give the music a whole new edge.I’m happy to see Iron Savior get back in their armored wheelhouse and batten down the hatches. Titanfall isn’t on par with their classic albums, but it’s a well done and enjoyable slab of Germanic power with more balls than you might expect. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks, nor make a horse drink and you certainly can’t kill German metal bands without resorting to nuclear bombery. Until that day, you must accept your Iron Savior.

Line-Up:

Piet Sielck - Vocals, Guitars (ex-Savage Circus, ex-Gentry, ex-Second Hell)
Jan-Sören Eckert - Bass, Vocals (additional) (Grimmark, ex-Charon, ex-Masterplan, ex-Running Wild (live), ex-Mydra)

Album:

Hamburg based power metal band Iron Savior was facing a problem: what to do when your early albums are not available regularly anymore but a re-issue is not possible due to legal reasons? Well, the decision was made to use this situation to give the material a sonic upgrade."We can't re-release our albums from the Noise Records years in their initial form", band boss Piet Sielck says, "but we are free to re-record songs from these albums. We've approached this challenge with a lot of enthusiasm."What Sielck refers to, became a 19 tracks strong double album now, titled "Reforged - Riding On Fire", which consists of the best and most popular songs Iron Savior have released so far. These 2017 re-recordings come with a much more powerful sound of course, but the band managed the task to keep the songs' character and feel.Demand is steadily rising: especially after the band's latest album "Titancraft" (2016), which became the biggest chart success in their history, new fans wanted to discover Iron Savior's catalogue. They'll now get the best 19 tracks with an upgraded sound – of course mixed by Piet Sielck. "Reforged - Riding On Fire" is a highly enjoyable treat for old and new fans alike.

Album:

Germany’s power metallers IRON SAVIOR are ready to release their new opus titled "Kill Or Get Killed" next March 8th. Led by main man songwriter / vocalist Piet Sielck, the band has become one of the most popular acts of the 'new wave of power metal' scene. We never featured at this blog an album from this band, because while ok, we never found 'em musically relevant.Unlike previous releases, "Kill Or Get Killed" has a different vibe than the usual 'power metal for the masses'. The science fiction themes that are Iron Saviour trademark are still present, but the album has a more raw, 'go for the throat' melodic metal approach than on previous releases. And I like it.Indeed, while Iron Saviour are part of the 'new wave of power metal', that meaning commercial, accessible melodies and choruses, "Kill Or Get Killed" has a refreshing punch: it's inspired by melodic metal classic acts.Think a mix of Accept's razor riffs, Helloween-like scales, and a clean sound production akin Primal Fear, bombastic yet more 'classy'.The album was inspired by the sci-fi novel The Star of Pandora, which is about the destruction of humanity by an alien civilization. You don't need to follow a story though, all tracks work like standalone songs. The title track kicks things off in fine fashion with a fast and furious metal anthem melody that features some quick double bass drum footwork from new drummer Patrick Klose, heavy guitars, Sielck’s aggressive yet melodic vocals, and a huge chorus with a massive choir vocal.Sielck and longtime co-lead guitarist Joachim Küstner provide some tasty lead and harmony guitars.'Roaring Thunder' is one of my favorites, a hot old-school / '8s inspired metal track with a killer opening riff and a catchy sing-a-long chorus. Accept comes to mind, both in the riffs and martial chorus. The album continues with a take no prisoners attitude, with high-octane metallic songs like 'Eternal Quest' (I hear some '80s Blac Sabbath here) and the mid-tempo stomper 'From Dust and Ruble', including an epic chorus in Helloween vein. The bass lines of 'Sinner Or Saint' are giant, and on this track appear as well 'mysterious' synths for a song with some Masterplan on it (or perhaps Jorn solo?) while 'Stand and Fight' is an anthemic power metal track that will have heads banging and fists in the air with its message of empowerment.'Heroes Ascending' has a catchy hook and razor sharp guitar riffs. The galloping rhythms and huge choir vocals are a highlight here, especially during the memorable chorus. Then there's a track like 'Never Stop Believing' where you can hear why now we like Iron Saviour. A pumping melodic tune where Sielck’s vocals are on point with more of a focus on melody here, resulting in a very catchy melodic chorus at almost strays into AOR territory. Seriously, you need to check out this song, catchy as Hell. The mid-tempo melodic metal of 'Until We Meet Again' is another foray into more melodious territory with clean guitars, enhanced keyboards and again, a 'Heaven and Hell' Black Sabbath vibe. The album concludes with the crushingly heavy guitar riffs on 'Legends of Glory', a relentless heavy piece with a soaring chorus that will have the listener in a 'up the irons' attitude. This headbanging track is pure power metal in all its glory and a solid way to close the album.'Kill Or Get Killed' consists of ten solid tracks of classic melodic metal influenced music, wrapped by a modern and huge production sound. There's something for everyone here, from modern power metal to classic melodic metal, some groovy hard rock and even AORish moments. An album that will bring new converts to this band, accessible and enjoyable.

Line-Up:

Piet Sielck - Vocals, Guitars (ex-Savage Circus, ex-Gentry, ex-Second Hell)

Album:

Two years after the latest output and a few hardships later (such as a global pandemic and bass player Jan-Soren Eckert suffering from a severe disease) Germans IRON SAVIOR will release their new album ”Skycrest” on December 4 via AFM Records. After 10 albums under their belt, IRON SAVIOR isn’t power metal anymore.Sure, there’s a few rapid metallic tunes here – yet commercial ‘happy metal’ and catchy – but the half of ”Skycrest” is hard rock / melodic hard rock oriented: ”Souleater” is a groovy hard rocker with an early 90s feel, ‘Raise The Flag’ brings to mind GOTTHARD or ECLIPSE, the extremely melodious ‘End Of The Rainbow’ sounds like 1985 Americanized ACCEPT, and ‘Ease Your Pain’ is a power ballad akin AXEL RUDI PELL.So if you don’t like ‘power metal’, you better listen to ”Skycrest”, classic hard rock / melodic hard rock fans will find a lot to enjoy here, and very well done.

Album:

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of "The Landing" by Power Metal veterans IRON SAVIOR the album will be rereleased as a remixed and remastered version.Being obsessed with one corner of the metal universe is a double-edged sword for a musician. On one hand, after years of playing oneself into a corner, the level of of skill and polish gained can be impressive indeed. On the other, a lack of dynamic expression is sure to be evident. If there's any band that illustrates this perfectly, it's got to be Iron Savior. In terms of consistent, professional output, I'm hard pressed to think of more than a handful of bands that can match Piet and his crew. But there's no doubt that over the years the music has run together, to the point where it's difficult to chart a rate of creative growth to any significant degree. When I read comments about this band different people have their favorite album, and it's all over the map. One guy likes Unification. The next guy swears Condition Red is their best. And some (like me) prefer The Landing. Each can put forth reasons for their opinion, but I suspect it's mostly because when you first hear Iron Savior, that's the album you will love most. After that, it steadily declines into same-ness until finally settling into boredom.Perhaps not surprisingly, my introduction to Iron Savior - other than a few random songs - was The Landing. And even less surprisingly, I hold firm to my opinion that it's their best album. So as I write this, just know that I understand my bias, and I don't really care. The Landing is grand, and I often return to it when I want to hear good power metal. There's an awful lot to love here. Production-wise, The Landing is obviously a new peak for the band, with every instrument in perfect mix, each performance flawlessly laid down, and Piet's growly, yet soaring voice presiding over everything with zeal and elegance. I love the guitar tone on display, striking an effective balance between distortion and punch, raging right through the center of the frequency spectrum, yet controlled and tightly executed. Nack and Eckert lay down the low end, without a ton of imagination, but on point. There's nary an out-of-place whack or strum to be found. Piet applies his vocal flair, an instantly-recognizable voice unlike so many other bands in this subgenre. These are professionals at work. The years of writing and recording many songs comes through loud and clear.Stylistically I'd be remiss not to agree a little bit with Iron Savior's detractors. To say the band is essentially Judas Priest, Gamma Ray, and Blind Guardian crushed together into a slick package isn't far from the truth. But wearing influences on your sleeve isn't an Iron Savior trademark. Many bands do it, especially post-millennium, and especially within the realms of power metal, where clearly innovation does not happen to the degree that it does in other corners of the metal universe. What The Landing brings to the table is a group of extremely well-crafted songs, ranging from the accessible opening track The Savior, to the Blind Guardian tinged, speedy Starlight, to the anthemic Hall of the Heroes. One of the greatest assets they bring to bear is the art of the key change, something many bands fail at, yet consistently Piet's writing includes fantastic examples. Most of these songs stick with tried-and-true chord patterns and drum rhythms, but they also kick into different modalities with ease, moving from key to key, sometimes re-using the same riff and other times moving into something completely different. Their best songs, such as March of Doom and Faster Than All, hit extremely hard and it's usually around a particularly effective key change, such as the chorus in the former or the bridge in the latter. And there are just enough tasty riffs to satisfy guitar players like myself, such as the openers in March of Doom and Moment In Time. You won't find much different lyrically on The Landing from any other Iron Savior album. Piet is obsessed with cybernetic space travelers from beyond time, on some existential journey to save mankind or fight some nameless evil, presumably also from somewhere beyond time. Seriously, this is the seventh album in their catalog and it opens with The Savior. It's not hard to figure out that this topic will wind its way through every Iron Savior release until Piet hangs it up. The other topic Piet favors is nostalgia for the metal of old, which shows up in songs like R.U. Ready? and Heavy Metal Never Dies. Sometimes I can't tell if Piet is serious about this stuff or tongue-in-cheek. Heavy Metal Never Dies might have been a rally cry in 1988, but now it's almost laughable. I suspect he really does think this is cool, which makes it amusing, and more than a little cheesy. But the vocal performance is special, as always, and it forgives much of the sophomoric writing. And heck, I like a space fantasy as much as the next guy, having listened to Gamma Ray for decades and having been a Star Trek geek for my whole life. What The Landing might lack in creative lyrics, though, it more than makes up for in melody. Piet's vocal melody writing is truly special, far out-pacing the average, and making Iron Savior's songs seem much better than the sum of their parts. Very seldom does he write lazy vocal melodies that simply follow the music, or drone on one or two notes. And he doesn't settle for a good chorus and then hang up his shoes. The majority of each song contains soaring, genuinely singable melodies that keep them interesting. It's true that he doesn't have as wide a range as some others, but I view Piet to be on the level of Hansi Kürsch in terms of having a recognizable voice. A favorable way to view Iron Savior is as a launchpad for Piet's singing. When I put it all together, I find The Landing to be one of the better power metal albums in my catalog. I listen to it often, it's fun to play along with, and satisfying to sing those melodies. Ultimately, if you can't innovate musically, then you've got to write and produce fantastic songs. And they've got to be performed with power and conviction. The Landing succeeds wildly on this level, and it's enough to keep me coming back.

Piet Sielck - Vocals, Guitars (ex-Savage Circus, ex-Gentry, ex-Second Hell)

After the successful first part of 2017 now follows the second part of the "Reforged" series, in which the power metal heroes IRON SAVIOR present lavish re-recordings of their best tracks and fan favorites from their first five albums! Album:

Unleash the fire within and embark on a sonic journey with Iron Savior's monumental album "Firestar": an inferno of metal mastery that will leave you breathless and craving for more. Sometimes pure coincidence or seemingly inconspicuous little details can turn a very good album into an outstanding release. In the case of "Firestar", the latest studio recording by Hamburg power metal act Iron Savior, it has come as a real surprise even for singer/guitarist Piet Sielck that the new songs surpass the material of the impressive predecessor album "Skycrest". In fact, the cornerstones of the current offering were already set and pointed to a successful production within the tried and tested framework, when all of a sudden everything turned out rather differently: "Just before the recordings were finalised, I was inspired by the muse, totally of the blue. I wrote two more songs out of nowhere and changed a third one on the spur of the moment. And suddenly, 'Firestar' turned into an even better record", says Sielck happily, admitting that this unexpected creative surge "triggered great emotions" in him.The three tracks that Sielck is referring to are the anthem "In The Realm Of Heavy Metal", the title track "Firestar" and the final "Together As One", where the basic structure had already been finalised when he changed the chorus, and the song "immediately turned into real highlight". Mind you, doesn't this superlative apply to every one of the eleven songs? After all, the title track is irresistible and with its incredible 176 BPM definitely one of the fastest songs in Iron Savior's history to date. On the other hand, "Firestar" features a wide range of influences from hard rock to pop, all calibrated to heavy metal standards thanks to those typical Iron Savior virtues. Such as "Through The Fires Of Hell" with its emotionally charged lyrics dedicated to the Iron Savior boss's wife. Sielck: "In our blended family with three wonderful daughters, we've gone through any number of ups and downs together. I'd go to hell and back for her every day if I had to."Speaking of which: to Piet Sielck and his three comrades-in-arms Joachim 'Piesel' Küstner (guitar), Jan S. Eckert (bass) and Patrick Klose (drums), the content of their material is much more than a mere accessory. "We have to be able to identify with our lyrics, they have to be relevant, otherwise they don't work for us", comments Sielck on the parameters of the words of his material, which, despite certain fantasy/sci-fi leanings, is always about the basic rules of coexistence, about respect and tolerance, about good and evil, and evidence - as Sielck puts it: "a Hanseatic view of things". The same can be said of the four songs featuring Iron Savior's typical Atlantis theme and to "Across The Wasteland" with its reference to Steven King's Dark Tower series.Iron Savior has again come up with an exceptional studio album in "Firestar", enhanced by Felipe Machado Franco's impressive cover artwork presenting the Iron Savior spaceship that has been around since 2011. The cherry on the cake is the powerful production courtesy of Hamburg's Powerhouse Studio, including intelligently positioned keyboard parts and the anthemic background choirs, supported by Sielck's 17-year-old daughter Frida and her boyfriend. There can be no doubt about it: "Firestar" is a bonfire in many respects!
