Formed a mere two years ago, Italy's Secret Rule has been busy with two albums in two years, the latest Machination on the Scarlet Records label. Now, Secret Rule, not only from Italy, but also fronted by a female vocalist. What's that you say? Another symphonic heavy or power metal band? That's what my expectations were. But that's not entirely so.It's not that aren't some symphonic notes, but they're minimal. More so, Secret Rule is a melodic heavy metal band equally infused with the groove of hard rock and speed of power metal. Or is it the reverse? You catch that amalgamation clearly within Dolls or I Will, the latter has some of that power metal quickness. Even better for that fast pace is You're The Player, once more over a prominent groove and some groovy riffs and hooked with a nice chorus. And you'll pick up the symphonic layer in the middle.Something more should be side about the keyboards. With The Image, they come with the gentleness of the piano, basically supporting the melody of an otherwise vocal anthem. But then Henrik Klingenberg (Sonata Arctica) can get just plain weird with his synthesizers as within Your Trap. At the beginning, and after the midpoint, they sound like some warped interpretation of The Captain and Tenille's Muskrat Love. Strange.Moving on to the vocals, Angela Di Vincenzo has a powerful voice. The expectation that she might be one of the gazillion octave shrill operatic singers can be dismissed. She has some range, but she presents more as a pure hard rock and heavy metal vocalist. It should be noted that within Foolish Daisy, Secret Rule has some moron doing death vocals (and possibly within Dolls also, but muted if there). Whatever. I'll never understand. You write ten or so songs, and then somebody in the band says, "Hey! We gotta be modern and cool. We need a song with dirty vocals. Get over it already. Otherwise, Secret Rule's Machination is a strong second effort, with entertaining melodic hard rock infused heavy metal with a few more twists besides.

Pride & Joy Music is proud to announce the signing of Italian symphonic metal band Secret Rule! The first collaboration will be the release of the band’s third full-length album, “The Key To The World”, on November 10, 2017. The band will go on tour soon after the release and support the record live.SR was formed at the beginning of 2014 with the intention to create a special sound with powerful rhythms and catchy melodies. The band is fronted by the powerful voice of Angela Di Vincenzo (Kyla Moyl) and masterminded by lead guitarist Andy Menario (Martiria), who has worked with big names such as Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath, Dio), Jeff Pilson (Dokken, Foreigner) and Carlos Cavazo (Quiet Riot). The line-up is completed by bassist Michele Raspanti (Graal) and drummer Nicola Corrente (Enemynside, Stick It Out, Starkiller Sound).In February 2015, the band released their debut “Transposed Emotions" (Rocksector Records): a concept, a mixture of facts and tales which analyse our society with a look at a post apocalyptic era. The album was recorded in 2014, produced, mixed & mastered at Antfam Studios in Denmark by Tue Madsen (Halford, The Haunted, Mnemic, Hatesphere, Ektomorf), while the artwork was created by Simona Speedy Saccoccia. After some gigs in Italy, the band went on tour in Switzerland, France, Germany, Belgium, Holland and the UK, taking part in some festivals such as the SOS Fest in the UK and the WIZZ FEST in Belgium.In October 2015, SR started recording their second album, “Machination”. The line-up for the new long player also included Sander Zoer (ex-Delain, Leah) on drums, Henrik Klingenberg (Sonata Arctica) on keyboards and other special guests such as Stefan Helleblad (Within Temptation), Timo Somers (Delain), Fabio D’Amore (Serenity) and Janneke De Rooy (Paper Doll Decay). This release was once again produced, mixed & mastered by Tue Madsen (Antfarm Studio) and the artwork created by Simona Speedy Saccoccia. The CD got a release on June 24, 2016 on Scarlet Records with two tours to follow in July and August covering Slovenia, Slovakia, Croatia, Hungary, Czech Republic, the UK, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany. On October 7 in Wetzicon at the Hall of Fame venue, the Italians supported Serenity and on January 29, they opened for Delain.Early in 2017, SR supported Blaze Bayley for some gigs and then started to work on new material. The new album, “The Key To The World”, will be released by Pride & Joy Music on November 10, 2017. Henrik Klingenberg (Sonata Arctica) and two new guests on this new CD, Henning Basse (Firewind, Mayan) and Ailyn Giménez (ex-Sirenia), also appear on this third release of the band. It was again mixed & mastered by Tue Madsen (Antfarm Studio, Denmark), while Fabio D’Amore (Serenity) handled the pre-production and Simona Speedy Saccoccia took care of the artwork again. In addition, music videos for the tracks “Twin Flames”, “The Song Of The Universe” & “Imaginary World” feat. all three guests will be released in advance to the album release. The band has already scheduled some gigs for the next months. In November, they will be direct support for Kobra And The Lotus.

The evolution that took its toll on Metal isn’t a new feature at all. It was this abstract force that made Metal evolve from the 70’s to the 80’s, from the 80’s to the 90’s, and so on. It’s not a sin to say that TRIVIUM, SLIPKNOT, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE and other were true inheritors of the past, without a shadow of doubt. Of course that the fans can like them or not, it’s their right, but they can’t deny such thing. And to show as modernity really can make things even tasteful the Italian quartet SECRET RULE comes for another round with “Against”, their latest release (and it’s their fifth album as well).Their music can be described as a fusion of a modern form of traditional Heavy Metal with some modern elements, with charming and accessible melodies, powerful rhythms and hooking choruses. Barely comparing, imagine a fusion of the best elements of EVANESCENCE, NIGHTWISH, TRIVIUM, old elements from THE GATHERING with Hard Rock/Heavy elements, and the listener can have an idea of what is expecting on this album. And the band shows an amazing flow of energy on each song. The sound quality of the album is surely excellent: all musical instruments present very good sets of instrumental tunes, trying to be modern and aggressive, but in a way that the listeners will understand easily (evading the greasy and low tunes that could be a wrong choice for their work). And the album sounds clean and heavy, in a way that aggressiveness and melodies can be expressed and assimilated easily.“Against” isn’t a hard album to be heard and assimilated. The hooks are so many that every song has something that the fans will like. The seductive chorus and modern energy of “Shades of Humanity” (along with its very good keyboards parts and some male nasty voices to create good contrasts), the accessible hooks presented on the chorus of “Rise Again” and “Going Nowhere” (where the introspective and somber ambiance turns things even more interesting, and the guitars are really great), the commercial modern outfit of “Digital Revolution” (what lovely vocals can be heard on this one), and the abrasive modern weight contrasting with good melodies on “Against” and “Deep Solitude” are the best moments.The musical work of SECRET RULE is really mature, so hear “Against” and take a ride of joyful moments that it brings to the listeners.

After their latest album “Against” released on February 21st, SECRET RULE is back and armed with a new set of tunes. The Italian metal band will release a cover album on April, 24th exclusively on their official web store and, later, it will be available on the most important digital platforms.It’s titled Quarantine: The Other Side of Us and it has been conceived, shaped, played, mixed, and mastered in two weeks, during this quarantine time where most of the people in the world have been forced to stay home.Speaking about the release itself, vocalist Angela Di Vincenzo states:“Quarantine: The Other Side of Us is a special Secret Rule cover album consisting of eleven covers made in memory of this damned period that the whole world is getting through because of COVID-19. Due to the positive reactions to our music videos for the covers of Ozzy Osbourne’s “Gets Me Through” and Placebo’s “The Bitter End”, released during the first 2 weeks of the pandemic, and after the request by our fans to have an album of covers made by us, we decided to release a special album containing the two covers songs previously released plus other nine new songs.” Andy Menario, the SECRET RULE mastermind adds: “We’ve worked hard to put all the elements of a Secret Rule track in this new album. It was quite a challenge because we’ve thought, worked, played, mixed, and mastered it in just two weeks, while recording an original album may take several months to get it right! Once the guitars jump in we get a real heavy metal kind of style, lead by a rambling bass guitar and Angela spitting out the lyrics. Towards the end a get’s a more symphonic metal kind of feel.Equilibrium starts with a warm piano sound and gets shredded by sharp guitars, hammered down by the drummer and filtered away by a symphonic metal touch. Angela’s voice seems to tremble a bit ( a bit like Dave Gahan’s voice, known from Depeche Mode). Her vocal powers lead her to high notes but also to a very deep bass sound and it all sounds like as if it’s just like a walk in the park during spring.Shards Of Time starts with hammering drums and rambling guitars mixed with a bit of electronics that give the song a Science Fiction touch (in combination with the lyrics). It’s clearly a well fuelled song!Gravity On Us is a great rocker with a catchy chorus and a great global sound! This one has a certain hit potential!Uninverse starts like a cheap symphonic metal track, changes pretty fast into a more electronic minded track and switches off to a more metal minded track and this all within one minute. The end is filled with pathos and has a very catchy sound!I Am sounds like the spooky electro version of Tron but throws on top a typical symphonic metal touch, rambling guitars and hard hitting drums. Angela’s trembling voice sounds well! The more symphonic metal parts remind me a bit of Withing Temptation.Time Zero starts with a count off and a rambling guitar. The start is the heaviest of all the previous tracks, but it’s Angela’s voice who takes down the tempo and the fire. After her introduction we get more pathos and a more dangerous feel. I also hear male vocals and I like it! The male voices on the special part of Time Zero are: Nick Pedron (bass player) for the clean male vocal, and Andy Menario (guitar player) on the angry vocal.Multiple Me starts with a sound that reminds me of count Dracula until the guitars and the symphonic sound jump in. It’s a nicely pumped up track!From Null To Life could have been an electro minded floating track but it changes after 30 seconds into a pumped up symphonic metal track with a choir in the background. It’s a good track with great vocals!Black Hole is a track I can describe as a powerful ballad that shows off bravely the vocal powers of their singer: AngelaDi Vincenzo. It’s a magical and magistral end for this album!It’s not over yet as we get an encore called: Uninverse (piano and vocal version): here we get once again the proof that Angela has a beautiful voice and proof that she can do anything with it. In this version she grabs for our heart.I heard more then enough potential and am happy I finally run into this band! I hope they come one day to Belgium and invite me to their show to review it (hence I go to max 10 shows a year as I’m passed 50 and need to dose my energy next to cycling and having a very demanding job with irregular hours in the hospital I work in)! I hope the album gets the response needed and the maximum exposure they totally deserve! Congratulations!
