Bio:

Theocracy started life as a one-man project created by Matt Smith, who played and sang everything on the self-titled debut album released at the end of 2003 on MetalAges Records. The album received fantastic reviews and worldwide acclaim within the Metal genre. The music? Epic, melodic Power Metal with occasional progressive flourishes. Long songs, longer songs, short songs, fast songs, slow songs, midtempo songs, ballads...epic choirs, soaring vocals, pounding drums, crunchtastic guitars, and most importantly, melodies that get stuck in your head.Mirror of Souls, the second Theocracy album, saw the addition of drummer Shawn Benson and guitarist Jon Hinds to the ranks. Instead of the dreaded “sophomore slump,” Mirror of Souls built on the strengths of the first album and took things to another level with improved production and performances, culminating in the 23-minute title track, which perfectly sums up everything Theocracy is about. The album received spectacular reviews worldwide and led to bassist Jared Oldham and guitar whiz Val Allen Wood joining the band, completing the lineup. Theocracy’s first tour of Europe soon followed. Now, the latest chapter in Theocracy’s career is here with As the World Bleeds. The effect of the full lineup is immediately apparent, as the band comes out firing on all cylinders across 10 tracks. The album was conceived, in the words of Smith, as “a song-oriented album where each track stands alone, and where every song is iconic and strong enough to potentially be someone’s favorite.” The result features everything a Theocracy fan could wish for, and the band looks forward to taking the new material to stages across the globe.

Album:

Upon the release of the upcoming Theocracy Album "Mirror of souls," I decided to give this album another good listen. Theocracy is a christian progressive/power metal band hailing from Athens, Georgia. Don't let the christian tag turn you off though! Everything you hear on the album was done by Matt Smith alone. From what I've gathered from interviews is that the album was originally suppose to be a demo of a few songs, though some friends encouraged him to make it a full album. This explains the production quality & the use of drum programming. That said it doesn't sound bad at all. Now that we got the basics of the album out of the way lets get to the music. The album starts off with the epic sounding intro track "Prelude" going straight in the first song "Ichthus" The song uses the melody of the intro track and also includes catchy harmonies, a fast chorus & a sing-a-long part. Great way to start off an album. Only dislike I have is the slight overuse of the backing vocals that distracts from the body of the song in some parts. Doesn't really matter though. Great track nonetheless. The next song is the first of three 11 minute epics "The Serpent's Kiss." The song shows everything that theocracy is about. The progressive influence is most noticeable here too. Within a three to four minute span it goes from happy sounding moments to the heaviest moments. Resolving then to a long Iron maiden-ish break strongly kicking back into the song very powerfully. The lyrics are very great and well thought out, even better if you a christian and can relate to it.The next tracks are "Mountain" & the title track "Theocracy." "Mountain" is a very straight-forward song and very catchy. Upon a first listen you would be hooked. "Theocracy" starts off with an epic intro heading straight into a fast Iron Maiden styled guitar harmony. Throughout the song their are a lot of interesting harmonies and melodies. This song can arguably be the best song on the album!Next is the other 11-12 minute epic "The Healing Hand" & "Sinner." "The Healing Hand" starts off with some interesting Ideas to start off the epic. The song is very well written, well enough that I couldn't tell 11 minutes passed by the time the song was over! "Sinner" has a sorrowful and eastern vibe, fantastic chorus too. Halfway near the song it has a heavy edge going back into the chorus to finish up the song."New Jerusalem" kicks in really quick after "Sinner." Fast song and very epic sounding. The chorus is in a major key which is often not liked by most metalheads but fits the song very well. Further into the song it goes into a symphonic part & later into a very tasteful solo and harmony. Ending with the epic chorus."The Victory Dance" comes right after. This is another really catchy tune off the album solely based on a folk riff throughout the song. Great chorus and a few interesting things going on in the song. Now for the final track "Twist of Fate." The third epic and defiantly the heaviest track on the album; my personally favorite. Starts off really creepy with the feedback of the guitars and kicks in very powerfully. Quite the headbanging song that later gets into more progressive and symphonic parts while maintaining it's heaviness. The lyrics on this song stands out the most out of all the songs on the album. Probably the best lyrics Matt Smith has written. The song ends with an epic chord progression and soaring vocal melodies that leaves me thinking "Wow that was epic."Overall this is a great debut album for Theocracy. All parts very well written & Matt smith's vocals are probably one of the best in the genres. I would totally recommend this album to anyone into tasteful progressive/power metal.

Album:

The Athens, Georgia-based melodic metal band THEOCRACY will release their new album "Ghost Ship" on October 28th in Europe and North America through Ulterium Records. Information on different editions and formats will be announced soon. With Ghost Ship, Theocracy perfects the lively and fully-realized sound of As the World Bleeds, delivering 10 muscular and streamlined tracks that never lose focus and combine for one memorable journey. You like midtempo singalong anthems? Try the “Ghost Ship” title track. Thrashy rhythms and intensity? “The Wonder of It All” should be to your liking. Emotional ballads with huge melodic hooks? Go “Around the World and Back.” Or if you prefer epic, progressive tracks that do all these things and more, 10-minute album closer “Easter” is sure to be a favorite. Each song on Ghost Ship stands alone and has a unique signature, but every moment sounds unmistakably like Theocracy.“So many kids were coming up to us after shows and telling us their stories,” says Theocracy vocalist Matt Smith. “A lot of them were searching for purpose and a place to fit in, and having grown up as an awkward and unpopular kid myself, their words really stuck with me. I started thinking about what a band of misfits Jesus’ disciples were: fishermen, tax collectors, and people of little consequence in the eyes of the world. Sometimes the ones most people don’t see, or choose to look straight through the ghosts of society, as it were, dead to the world end up having the biggest impact. That’s where the title and idea for Ghost Ship came from: all the misfits, the uncool, the outcasts, there is a place where you do fit in. Although Ghost Ship is not a concept album, this is a recurring theme, particularly in the title track and ‘Castaway.’”

Album:

The highly anticipated new album by American power/progressive metal act Theocracy is here. Seven years after the criticaly acclaimed "Ghost Ship", mastermind Matt Smith and his band return with a new masterpiece, titled "Mosaic". Theocracy started in 2002 as a solo project of Smith, meanwhile it has turned into a real band with a steadily growing fanbase. The rapid mixture of power and progressive metal has become more and more unique over the years and is the result of a variety of influences. Theocracy's sound will surely appeal to fans from Avantasia to Symphony X. Their outstanding grasp for strong melodies and fantastic arrangements are second to none.
