Bio:

Stratovarius is a Finnish power metal band that formed in 1984. Since their formation, they have released 15 studio albums, 4 DVD and 3 live albums. Along with German bands Helloween, Blind Guardian, and Gamma Ray, Stratovarius is considered one of the leading and most influential groups of the power metal genre. In its history, the band has known many chaotic lineup changes; there is no founding members in the band since 1995, and currently, the longest standing member is singer Timo Kotipelto, who joined in 1994.Stratovarius was founded as Black Water in August 1984 by singer and drummer Tuomo Lassila, guitarist Staffan Stråhlman, and bassist John Vihervä. Line-up changes soon started to occur, including Timo Tolkki replacing Stråhlman two months later and taking over singing duties as well, and the band expanding to a quintet with the arrival of keyboarist Antti Ikonen the following year. Under this line-up, the band released its first album Fright Night in 1989, with Tolkki acting as sole composer. While various changes of bassist occurred, the band released the albums Twilight Time (1992) and Dreamspace (1994). In 1994, Tolkki decided to stop acting as lead vocalist, with Timo Kotipelto joining the band. After the release of Fourth Dimension in 1995, last remaining founding member Lassila, as well as Ikonen, left the band and were respectively replaced by Jörg Michael and Jens Johansson respectively. This line-up consiting of Kotipelto, Tolkki, bassist Jari Kainulainen, Johansson and Michael, now recognized as the "classic line-up" of Stratovarius, became the longest line-up in its history (1995-2005). With this line-up, the band released eight albums including most of their popular works (releasing an album with the same line-up than its predecessor for the first time) until the release of a self-titled album in 2005, after which Kanulainen departed and was replaced by Lauri Porra. In 2008 guitarist, sole composer and main lyricist Timo Tolkki, being highly critical of their last album and tired of the tensions between the members, decided to disband Stratovarius. However, at the demand of the rest of the band, he agreed to let them continue as Stratovarius while leaving the band. He subsequently regreted his decision, stating that the current band had nothing to do with Stratovarius which he considered as mainly his own work.Despite the controversy of Tolkki's departure, the band's following albums Polaris (2009) and Elysium (2011), the first albums with Porra and new guitarist Matias Kupiainen in which all members except Michael were part of the songwriting process, received positive reception, with various critics and fans considering it their best albums in the last decade. After a small "Farewell Jörg" tour in Finland, Jörg Michael departed for personal reasons in 2012. With new drummer Rolf Pilve, the band released its latest album Nemesis in 2013.

Album:

With the albums “Elements Pt. 1” and “Elements Pt. 2” Stratovarius succeeded with what only very few bands manage to achieve: they opened doors, tore down (genre) walls and created two milestones in progressive symphonic metal. Both albums showed the Finnish band on top of their game and perfected the foundation of what was to become the instantly recognizable Stratovarius trademark sound.11 years after their original release (and Top 5 chart positions in their home country Finland), both albums will be combined for a high quality reissue including exclusive bonus material. “Elements Pt. 1 & 2” will be released on December 5th 2014 on earMUSIC.Jens Johansson explains: “The idea for this 2014 reissue revolves much around the surround (5.1) mixes of the album. I had heard a few tracks from these at some point and was completely blown away. But they were never released. So finally, these quite wonderful audiophile 5.1 surround mixes are available.”“Elements Pt. 1 & 2” is going to be released as 3CD+DVD digi-pak, limited to 10.000 copies worldwide, as well as limited to 3.000 copies worldwide box set.The releases feature both original albums, a bonus CD including unreleased and rare songs like B-Sides or live versions from the 2003 Elements tour and a DVD. For the first time in the band’s history, the DVD features the 5.1 mix of both albums, rare bonus songs as well as a photo gallery. The box set includes the high quality 3CD+DVD digi-pak, a cassette including previously unreleased demo songs which are only available on this format and will not be made available anywhere else, an “Elements” tour T-shirt as well as a reproduction of the original tour program. As a special bonus, the band has conquered their private archives for rare and never before seen picture material – so get ready for some fun shoots from behind the scenes of the album recording sessions as well as juicy material from the tour. With its previously unreleased and rare songs, the 5.1 mix on DVD, the brand new artwork and freshly written liner notes by Jens Johansson “Elements Pt. 1 & 2” is definitely a must-have.Portraying the elements wind, fire, water and earth, the albums themselves feature a prominent, effortlessly flowing progressive sound. The music made clear that the band – Timo Kotipelto (vocals), Timo Tolkki (guitar), Jens Johansson (keyboard), Jörg Michael (drums), Jari Kainulainen (bass) – were not just another metal band, on the contrary, they were (and still are) a band that doesn’t shy away to take one step further and experiment with different genres. Both Pt. 1 and Pt. 2 have proven to be one of the band’s best works up until that point of their career. Especially Jens Johansson’s exceptional keyboard performance has to be pointed out: mind-blowing keyboard solos, giving the album a distinctive sound frame. “’Elements’ still is one of the greatest sounding power metal records ever. And I imagine, one of the heaviest melodic rock albums that will ever be made with an orchestra”, reflects Jens Johansson about the sound of the album.

Album:

Eternal is the upcoming fifteenth album by power metal band Stratovarius, to be released on 11 September 2015 in Europe and on 18 September in USA.Finnish melodic metallers STRATOVARIUS are putting the finishing touches on their new album, "Eternal", for an August 14 release via the earMUSIC label. The CD's arrival will be preceded by a performance at Wacken Open Air festival, and will be followed by a full European tour.STRATOVARIUS's last three albums — "Polaris", "Elysium" and "Nemesis" — were released close to each other as the consequence of the renewed creative energy the band gained following the arrival of new members, guitarist Mattias Kupianen (prolific songwriter and producer of all the albums, including "Eternal"), virtuoso bass player Lauri Porra, and the young talent Rolf Pilve, one of the best drummer of his generation who had to replace Jörg Michael after the latter decided to move into a new role in STRATOVARIUS management.STRATOVARIUS's most recent CD, "Nemesis", included the single "Unbreakable", which became one of the most streamed songs ever released by the band.Timo Kotipelto (vocals) and Jens Johansson (keyboards) proudly carry the torch of the glorious STRATOVARIUS tradition, but now many fans of the band consider the current lineup "classic STRATOVARIUS.""Since 'Polaris', we have released a new studio album pretty much every two years," reflects Jens Johansson, "but after 'Nemesis', we all decided to take a little bit of time off after we finished the world tour. Now we're all tanned and rested and it's about fucking time to get back into the saddle. Everybody has been busy the last few months writing lots of new songs, and only the best has been recorded for 'Eternal'."Song details and formats (including a limited deluxe edition as in the STRATOVARIUS tradition) will be revealed in the next weeks, as well as details for a tour in Finland.

After a small "Farewell Jörg" tour in Finland, Jörg Michael departed for personal reasons in 2012. With new drummer Rolf Pilve, the band released its latest album Nemesis in 2013.

Album:

STRATOVARIUS is one of the most influential, successful and enduring power metal bands in the world; one of the top names thanks to their distinguished mix of fast progressive metal and a melodic approach to melodies. What started in 1985 under the name BLACK WATER and left a trail of 16 studio albums and ten Top 5 chart positions in their native country Finland (and more than 40 top chart positions all around the globe), found — after a few bumpy steps and stones in the band's lineup — its peak in STRATOVARIUS's recent studio works "Elysium", "Nemesis" and "Eternal" — all milestones in sound, creativity and songwriting. It happens rarely nowadays, especially in metal, that a band creates one magic song after the other. STRATOVARIUS is one of the few exceptions. 29 of those exceptions (and there could have been more!) can be found on STRATOVARIUS's longest and greatest "Best Of", which is going to be released on May 6 via earMUSIC.The "Best Of" is going to be released as 2CD standard edition, digital and as 3CD limited edition in a high-quality packaging, including the exclusive 60-minute bonus CD "Live At Wacken 2015". Both editions include liner notes written by exceptional keyboardist Jens Johansson as well as rare picture material from the band's private archive. As a special treat, the "Best Of" includes the brand new song "Until The End Of Days" from the current band lineup consisting of Timo Kotipelto, Jens Johansson, Mattias Kupainen, Lauri Porra and Rolf Pilve. All hand-picked by the band and adding up to two and a half hours of pure STRATOVARIUS bliss, the songs give metal fans and those to be a great selection on the band's impressive work, including classics such as "Black Diamond", "Hunting High And Low" and "Speed Of Light" as well as more recent material such as the most streamed song in the band's history "Unbreakable" and "Shine In The Dark" from their recent studio album "Eternal".All songs have been remastered by the band's longtime companion Mika Jussila of Finnvox Studios.Jens Johansson explains: "It's been twenty years since the 'Episode' album, we're all getting older but this stuff sounds as fresh as ever. Could it be that STRATOVARIUS has discovered the fountain of Eternal Youth!? You may feel younger, but we can't actually (legally) promise you'll be younger after listening to this best-of album, but we can guarantee one thing: when you put it through your speakers, it will play 'Until the End of Days'!! To me, it's a testament to the fact that paying attention to songwriting and production was expensive, but so worth it. The songs, the sound and the performances really have stood the test of time."Timo Kotipelto adds: "Wow! 20 years in STRATOVARIUS have passed at the speed of light! I still remember when I joined the band and was happy to do some power metal. And I am very happy to still be able to do it after all these years! This collection of songs is an excellent selections and a cool way to remember the history of the band from the past to the present! I hope you will enjoy it as much as we did while selecting the songs.

Album:

It has been more than 30 years since Stratovarius got together and became one of the most influential, successful and enduring power metal bands in the world – and 27 years since the release of their debut album “Fright Night” in 1989. It is about time that their 16th studio album strong catalog and their rare live releases are going to be reissued in high quality packaging with a refreshed artwork by the band’s trusted cover artwork designer Gyula Havancsák, extensive liner notes and, even more importantly, rare and newly recorded bonus material. On top, all albums will be remastered. The reissue campaign is set to begin with one of the band’s most successful and most loved albums “Destiny” (originally released in 1998) and the cult live album “Visions Of Europe” (originally released in 1998). Both albums will be released as 2CD Digipak and digital in October 2016 on earMUSIC.“Destiny”, with its opulent, bombastic melodies and song structures, is regarded as one of the most important albums in the genre of melodic metal and secured the pole position in their home country Finland. Also thanks to the hit “S.O.S.” which made it to #2 in the Finnish single charts. The 2016 edition of the album includes the rare live bootleg “Visions Of Destiny” which has been recorded in October 1999 during their triumphant, album accompanying tour. With over 60 minutes, the CD perfectly captures the band’s energetic live spirit.“Visions Of Europe” follows up on the mind-blowing live whirlwind that is Stratovarius. Recorded in 1997 during the band’s tour to their hit album “Visions” – Rock Hard named it one of the 500 greatest rock and metal albums ever – one killer song follows another on the over 1 ½ hour long live set: “Kiss Of Judas”, “Speed Of Light”, “Father Time” as well as the Stratovarius classic not to miss “Black Diamond”.All Stratovarius albums will be re-released throughout 2016 and 2017, including extensive booklets and a lot of bonus material.

After a small "Farewell Jörg" tour in Finland, Jörg Michael departed for personal reasons in 2012. With new drummer Rolf Pilve, the band released its latest album Nemesis in 2013.

Album:

Stratovarius, the top name in the melodic power metal scene, is back with a new album with some fresh and some very rare material! "Enigma: Intermission II" features three brand-new songs as well as, for the first time in the band's history, four beautifully arranged orchestral versions of popular Stratovarius songs. The album is similar in concept to "Intermission", released 17 years ago between "Infinite" and "Elements" in the sense that these seven tracks made in 2018 are completed by nine very rare, very hard to find power metal gems. With over 30 minutes of brand-new material and 50 minutes of previously rare metal, "Enigma: Intermission II" is definitely more killer than filler!Take "Enigma" and "Oblivion" for example, fresh from the studio in 2018 and most definitely two killer songs. Both combine an epic melody with a bombastic chorus and heavy riffs for Stratovarius' trademark sound and remind of "Unbreakable" from their 2013 album "Nemesis", the most streamed song in the band's history. Or "Kill It With Fire" and "Castaway", two epic and full-blown power metal tracks that were previously only heard by Japanese fans. The sweeping melodic power metal grandeur of Stratovarius, together with Timo Kotipelto's powerful yet emotional voice, is very much present on all of the 80 minutes of this release. This spirit truly makes "Enigma: Intermission II" closer to a full new studio album than to a mere compilation.

Album:

World-renowned Symphonic / pomp-power melodic metal legends STRATOVARIUS will release “Survive” next Friday, their first album in almost a decade. The band’s first full-length release since 2015’s Eternal, ”Survive” marks a continuation of two major themes that have been consistent with their music since the beginning: humanity’s future and the environment. With the current global situation surrounding climate change and the growing popularity of new forms of energy, this record and Stradivarius’s music is as relevant as ever.A blistering comeback from one of metal’s most seminal bands, ”Survive” is full of dynamics and drama, feeding on a wide range of emotions along the way. Best exemplified by its profoundly rousing title track, ”Survive” is the Stratovarius spirit in exquisite musical form, with all the darkness and light that goes with it.After the long gap between records, there’s no rust as Stratovarius aims to reclaim their position as one of metal’s elite acts. One thing that’s been the case for their entire career and remains evident on ”Survive” is that the band knows how to write catchy songs. The album is packed to the gills with giant hooks and singalong choruses.Opening with the anthemic title track and the uplifting ‘Demand’, it’s clear the band are playing to their strengths on their sixteenth studio full-length, and this continues with the pneumatic drumming and classic Strato-chorus of ‘Broken’.‘Firefly’ simply soars and ‘We Are Not Alone’ is driven by Euro-pop keyboards, chunky riffs and possesses another skilful solo from guitarist Matias Kupiainen.Things slow down for the dramatic ‘Frozen in Time’, a powerful cut that brings out the very best in Kotipelto, the fifty-three year old singer still clearly at the top of his game. ‘World on Fire’ continues in that vein while the rousing ‘Glory Days’ could have been written during the band’s pomp in the mid-Nineties, a song with a welcome familiarity likely to bring a smile to many time-hardened faces.Every Stratovarius album needs a quality power ballad and with its lilting orchestrations, ‘Breakaway’ fulfils that requirement perfectly while ‘Before the Fall’ employs choral vocals to make its point.Another long standing power metal tradition is the epic final track, and at over eleven minutes in length, ‘Voice of Thunder’ is just that. Ranging from delicate notes to more strident and aggressive tones, Kotipelto, Kupiainen and Johansson are on point yet again, the heavier and proggier sections allowing bassist Lauri Porra and drummer Rolf Pilve time to shine as the song builds towards a suitably grand finale. With its impressive songwriting and performances, ”Survive” feels like Stratovarius has never been away. The energy and enthusiasm are still there and the songs have hooks to match.A triumphant comeback for one of the true leaders of the genre.
