Bio:

FIREWIND originally formed in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1998 but started in earnest after Gus moved to the United States. “For some time I studied at Berklee College of music in the USA. Some friends helped me to put together a demo, that I named FIREWIND, after an album of Uli Jon Roth’s band Electric Sun. I sent this demo around and got a couple of offers.” The demo was well received and Gus signed with Leviathan Records who put out the band’s first records, “Between Heaven And Hell” and “Burning Earth”. The band began touring the world, including a Japanese run with Rob Rock and a worldwide deal with Century Media Records was soon signed. The first album as part of that deal (“Forged By Fire”) further established the band but it was the follow up “Allegiance” that really put the band on the international map. Gus had finally found the right members (with the arrival of Time Requiem singer Apollo Papathanasio) and the subsequent two years of touring in support nike coupon code of “Allegiance” (opening for Dragonforce and All That Remains) saw the band hit three continents and clock up thousands of miles. The hard work paid off as both "Allegiance" and the acclaimed follow up "The Premonition" albums made it to the Top 10 in Greece and the "Mercenary Man" single became a Top 5 hit. "The Premonition" also charted in Japan, a territory that has majorly embraced and supported the band since their inception.Despite the band’s growing success, Gus was always ready to get back out on the road so when Arch Enemy needed a temporary tour guitarist, Gus was first in line and it was on Arch Enemy’s 2005 Ozzfest appearances that he first caught the eye of the Osbourne camp. But it wasn’t until 4 years later when Gus was invited to audition for the guitar role in Ozzy’s band. Gus was then asked to first perform with the band at ‘Blizzcon 2009’, where he ripped through Ozzy classics such as ‘Crazy Train’, ‘Mr Crowley’ and ‘Bark At The Moon’ with aplomb. Subsequently, Gus played on Ozzy’s “Scream” record and toured the world as Ozzy’s new guitarist as well as releasing FIREWIND’s acclaimed “Days Of Defiance” album in 2010, and hitting stages across the globe with his own band.A notoriously hard worker, Gus is rarely without a guitar in his hand and justifiably won the ‘Best Shredder’ award at this year’s Metal Hammer Golden Gods awards ceremony in London. The “Days Of Defiance” tour took FIREWIND across the world again, including appearances at Hellfest, Sonisphere UK, Graspop and Basinfirefest, plus tours of Japan, U.S.A., Canada and Europe.

Album:

Greek power metallers deliver a blistering live album. There’s probably a lot out there that only first heard of Gus G once he was handpicked by Ozzy Osbourne when he and long standing guitarist Zakk Wylde parted ways a couple of years back. There’s more to this guitarist virtuoso however in the form of his long standing power metal band Firewind. The Thessaloniki, Greece based group was originally an outlet for Gus G to record his 1998 demo, Nocturnal Symphony. It would be a further three years though before the guitarist’s demo would become a full time project when the line-up was fleshed out and Between Heaven and Hell was released.Things have gone from strength to strength for Firewind over the past decade, with 2012 seeing the release of their seventh studio effort, Few Against Many. To mark the occasion of the band’s tenth anniversary, they decided to play four very special anniversary shows in Greece in mid December of last year. Two shows were scheduled for their home town and two for Athens with a different set list being performed for each show. These shows would also be the last for long standing vocalist Apollo Papathanasio who would leave the band a month later. This live album therefore not only marks the bands anniversary but closes the chapter on Papathanasio’s tenure with the group as well. He’s since been replaced by Kelly Sundown Carpenter (Adagio, Beyond Twilight). The resulting live album was constructed from the best 17 tracks (19 tracks for the digital release) with Gus G overseeing proceedings with a “quality over quantity” approach. There’s no end of crowd favourites that made the cut including Head Up High, World on Fire, and Few Against Many. But for a band driven by the guitar talents of Gus G, it would be naive to think a live album wouldn’t showcase the six string slingers outstanding abilities. His just over two minute guitar solo leads into the five and a half minute instrumental SKG which gives the other band members with the exception of Papathanasio some room to showcase their talents. It’s a full sounding live album with every nuance of the band’s performance captured. No element of their stage sound is missed and between tracks there’s plenty of crowd noise to remind you that it’s not just some reworked studio material that you’re listening to. There are also a few opportunities for crowd singalongs with the gentle ballad Edge of a Dream being the stand out in that department. Truth be told, the crowd noise could do with being a little louder during the songs to increase the immersion in the live experience that this performance captures. Otherwise, Apotheosis Live 2012 is a solid marker for the band’s tenth year and final shows with Papathanasio. With the band’s eighth studio effort a whiles off, it’s safe to say that this one will keep the fans satiated for a little while longer.

Greek melodic power metal masters FIREWIND, the group led by guitar wizard and OZZY OSBOURNE band member Gus G., will release their eighth studio album, "Immortals", on January 20, 2017 via the band's longtime label partner Century Media Records in Europe.Gus G. checked in to comment about "Immortals" and its artwork (which can be seen below): "Today we're very happy to reveal the cover artwork for our eighth studio album. It's titled 'Immortals' and it's the first concept album FIREWIND has ever made."Since we're from Greece, we thought it would be a cool idea to make a concept of Greek history and heritage. So on this album we focused on the legendary battles of Thermopylae and Salamis during the second Persian invasion of Greece in 480 B.C."The artwork was once again created by our longtime collaborator, Gustavo Sazes, and we feel it reflects the vibe we tried to capture on this album — epic, powerful, glorious, everlasting.""Immortals" marks the first time FIREWIND used an outside co-producer, having worked with Dennis Ward (UNISONIC, PINK CREAM 69), who not only engineered, mixed and mastered the album, but also co-wrote it together with Gus G.In addition to the standard jewel case CD and digital download formats, "Immortals" will be released as LP on 180-gram vinyl with a poster as well as the entire album on CD as bonus. Album:

Firewind has once again brought their full potential, making "Firewind" a more than worthy successor to 2017's concept work "Immortals". Each time Firewind released an album over the last 20 years, it wasn't just the brilliance of exceptional guitarist Gus G (Ozzy Osbourne, Arch Enemy, Dream Evil) that fans were in awe of, but also the skills of every one of the band's vocalists. In that respect nothing has changed on their newest self-titled album, quite the contrary: with his charismatic voice new member Herbie Langhans (Avantasia, Radiant, Seventh Avenue) refines each and every last one of the ten new songs and infuses them with an expressive force that is remarkable. Gus G and Herbie Langhans got to know each other back in the autumn of 2019, when the Firewind leader was looking for a suitable replacement for Henning Basse after the tour with Queensrÿche. Just a few weeks later, the recordings for "Firewind" were a done deal, ready for Swedish sound engineer Tobias Lindell (Europe, Avatar, H.e.a.t) to mix them in the Lindell Audio Studios. The result is impressive indeed. "Firewind" boasts 11 prime examples of melodic metal songs. The skill, craftsmanship and power bleeds through every note, a passion you can almost taste, with hymnal melodies as a particularly outstanding feature.

Album:

In these turbulent times it's important to stand closely together as humanity instead of fighting each other. That's exactly what the new Firewind album "Stand United" is about! With strong lyrics and fine power metal/hard rock vibes, we are expecting the strongest masterpiece in the band's history. Combined with Masterplan, the band around ex-Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Gus G. and vocalist Herbie Langhans (formerly Avantasia) will play a big European co-headliner tour in the spring of 2024! The success of any metal production is almost always based on the sum of its individual parts, that have to fit together homogeneously to then ideally impress their listeners in their entirety. With Firewind, these details are easy to identify. On one hand there's the awe-inspiring guitar work of exceptional musician Gus G. and his breathtaking finger action as well as his authentic feel for catchy and at the same time powerful songs. He is supported by German singer Herbie Langhans, who has made a name for himself as a member of bands/projects such as Avantasia and SinBreed.Gus G. and Langhans form a tight unit not only in the artistic sense, they are also colleagues who share ideas in musical as well as in organisational contexts. "Herbie has an incredibly multi-faceted voice that complements our songs perfectly. He also has a great deal of experience in this industry", says former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Gus G., praising his frontman. "This combination makes it easier for me to develop the right songs for Firewind while keeping an eye on the business side of things."The latest product of this fruitful collaboration bears the programmatic title "Stand United". For their eagerly waiting fans, this new era began back in February 2023 with the arrival of Firewind's lead single "Destiny Calling", which was released during a sold-out tour across Europe and the UK with Finnish rising stars Beast In Black. Some of the album's stand-out tracks are the anthemic "Salvation Day", the massive and modern sounding "Fallen Angel" and the more radio-friendly track "Chains".Gus G. and Herbie Langhans have composed and recorded a total of nine new songs together with producer Dennis Ward (Magnum, Unisonic) as well as a cover of the 80s pop rock classic "Talking In Your Sleep", originally recorded by The Romantics but giving it a metal twist in the style of Firewind. The nine songs also bear testament to Firewind's sheer enthusiasm featuring a number of interesting themes. "I wouldn't exactly call 'Stand United' a classic concept album, but the album title indicates what we're about thematically", explains Gus G., who has also contributed with more lyric ideas on this one than any album before. "This world seems to be getting more and more out of balance, what with environmental disasters, the pandemic and the wars currently raging all over the globe. In such times, it's more important than ever for mankind to stand close together instead of fighting each other. That's what 'Stand United' is about!" This basic idea is also reflected in the cover artwork courtesy of Costin Chioreanu (Grave, Mayhem). Gus: "I always loved the artwork of our debut album, which was based on a real hand painting. With 'Stand United' being our tenth album, I wanted an equally authentic template and that's how I came across Costin. The collage of faces on the cover represent war, greed, betrayal, but also love and unity, which are some of the album's lyrical themes. I'm just as proud of the artwork as I am of the songs on our new album!" An opinion that Firewind fans are guaranteed to share!
