Bio:

Steelwing is founded in 2009, Swedish heavy metal band from Nyköping. The group even called their style of music at their concerts as True Heavy Metal.Steelwing was founded in spring 2009 under the name Scavenger, changed the name but after joining the singer Riley in Steelwing. Inspiration to the new name provided the cover of Judas Priest album Screaming For Vengeance, on a steel bird is ready. The band recorded shortly after the recording of the first four songs at a newcomer competition of the Austrian booking agency Rock The Nation in part, in which she was able to hold victorious with the Greek group Suicidal Angels against 1200 other groups.Their debut album Lord of the Wasteland was mastered by Achim Köhler, who had already Brainstorm, Primal Fear, and many supported more.Steelwings style is often, in allusion to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, the assigned NWOTHM (New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal). Their influences and role models sees the band in groups such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Diamondhead, Accept and Savatage. The first studio album, Lord of the Wasteland, was recorded in Deep Blue Studio near her hometown and published on February 26, 2010 via NoiseArt Records. It received positive response in the press.Out of the union of five zealous headbangers, the post-apocalyptic metal outfit Steelwing was established in 2009 and quickly joined the vanguard of the rising Swedish traditional heavy metal scene. Within months of releasing the first demo, a management and record deal had already been secured. The following years Steelwing honed their skills in a trial by fire on a crusade across Europe. Touring in support of giants such as Accept, Blind Guardian and Sabaton, the young Swedes conquered new grounds with their energetic live shows and punk attitude. From massive arenas to small club stages, Steelwing would soon come to prove themselves a worthy headliner name in their own right during the following tours of Europe and South America. The vocal acrobatics, synchronized twin-guitar blitzkrieg and fierce rhythm section proved to be a winning combination in the studio as well: from the critically acclaimed debut album “Lord of the Wasteland” (2010) to the hit-packed sophomore release “Zone of Alienation” (2012) and the groundbreaking reinvention “Reset, Reboot, Redeem” (2015), dystopian visions and uncompromised quality have always been reliable constants in the Steelwing doctrine.

Album:

Sophomore effort from yet another stellar Swedish retro-minded band of youngsters. Apart from the 54 second intro (“2097 A.D.”) and the 10+ minute closer, STEELWING write quick hitting traditional Metal anthems.Like a world class runner, they’re typically four minutes or less. Like countrymen ENFORCER, this is shrill, high pitched, NWOBHM inspired music; especially the opening “Solar Wind Riders” and bass dominated instrumental “The Came From The Skies”, both of which owe a major debt to IRON MAIDEN.Similar minded tracks include the nuclear fallout themed title cut, “The Running Man” and “Tokkotai”. First single “Full Speed Ahead!” is an accurate title, a nitro-fueled romp. The mammoth “Lunacy Rising” is basically two or three STEELWING tracks melded together, including a drum / bass interlude, a rare plodding segment and racing to the finish, almost exclusively sans voices. Somehow the length breezes by, no small feat. Overall, high energy fun. Good stuff!

Album:

The 3rd outing by STEELWING sees them developing their post-apocalyptic lyrics in a more thoughtful and mature way. Sonically challenging at points and deep in its meanings forces the listener into exciting self-reflections while challenging pre-conceived world views. This album would have been out of place and needless in the post-cold war 1990s, but with darkening world views becoming the norm this set five Swedes provide the sound track for the end of the world.Definitely your thinking man’s thrash metal album, drawing on heavy themes of freedom, spiritually and political decay set in a dystopian mind set. Opening with the eerie melodies on “Carbon Waste Lifeforms” to transport you away from reality in time for “Reset, Reboot, Redeem” with it’s crushing riffs and infectious grooves, you can imagine the crowd shouting “DANCE YOU F****PUPPETS” before headbanging with the solo then circle pitting to the riff that follows. “Och Världen Gav Vika” show cases very intricate guitar leads and their native tongue of Swedish, the melody felt fresh and is something they should definitely do in the future in a world dominated by English speaking bands. Following the aftermath of the Paris attacks, no truer words of “defending our freedom by taking our freedoms away” have never been uttered, “Architects Of Destruction” rages against totalitarian ideals and offers a searing critique of American Presidents by sampling speeches (notably G.W. Bush’s.) It’s a bleak masterpiece, hitting far too close to home and all the better for it. “Network” may seem like a sub-1 min album filler, but give it a few listens and unpick the lyrics… if you’re not reconsidering your views on religion you may need to listen again. “Like Shadows, Like Ghosts” is one of the shorter, punchier songs on the album and deals with concepts of death and our temporal state in the universe.Showcasing more progressive influences, “Hardwired” starts with a slow-paced but enticing intro before bursting in a Galloping verse. It’s a true thrash metal rollercoaster between souring leads and hefty riffing. Riley’s vocals range is stunning, able to lead you through songs like a consummate story teller or forcing bleak messages front and centre to get the point across, shown to it’s full extent on the final track. The rhythm section of Nic and Oskar deserve phenomenal praise for underpinning every song with a level of quiet majesty, creating much space and tension while still leaving an open canvass for vocals and guitars. The 9.30 minute epic “We Are All Left Here To Die” could be at risk of becoming bland without them, but with them every intelligently woven vocal line hits home and is likely to become a live anthem in the near future, and forms a triumphant finish for a lofty album. This album is best listened to when on long journeys (the overnight Megabus London-Glasgow for example) and any form of physical exercise. Bands normally struggle to form an individual identity while wearing their influences on their sleeves as they do, but STEELWING pull off with sincerity and bravado without becoming another 80s parody band.
