Bio:

Danzig is an American band, formed in 1987 in Lodi, New Jersey, United States. The band is the musical outlet for singer and songwriter Glenn Danzig, preceded by the horror punk bands the Misfits and Samhain. They play in a bluesy doom-driven heavy metal style influenced by the early sound of Black Sabbath. On July 14, 1986, Samhain performed at The Ritz in New York in what was to be their final show. In attendance was Rick Rubin, who was scouting for potential bands to sign to his record label, Def American. Rubin at first wished only to sign Danzig, with the intent of making him the vocalist for a hard rock supergroup that Rubin envisioned. However, Danzig refused to sign to Rubin's label without Samhain's bassist Eerie Von. In 1987, he added John Christ on guitar and Chuck Biscuits (ex-Black Flag) on drums. To reflect the change in musical direction and avoid having to start anew after future lineup changes, Glenn, on Rubin's advice, changed the name of Samhain to his surname, Danzig.Glenn Danzig was the original vocalist and songwriter for the legendary horror punk band the Misfits. He formed Samhain after leaving the Misfits in the early 80s before forming Danzig in 1987 and forging ahead into the metallic realm. To reflect the change in musical direction and avoid lineup changes, Rick Rubin had asked Glenn to change Samhain's name to Danzig, so technically this band is still Samhain. The first (and some say the classic) Danzig line-up consisted of Glenn Danzig, John Christ (guitar), Eerie Von (bass) and Chuck Biscuits (drums). The aforementioned lineup lasted for 4 albums. Ironically, despite the illusion of being a real band, Danzig has always been more of a solo project for Glenn, who has remained constant for over a decade.Contrary to popular opinion, Danzig's Circle of Snakes is not "Danzig 8", as people tend to believe it is part of the numbered Danzig albums. Glenn claims that the album isn't a part of the numbered Danzig albums because of the different approach used on the album with it being more personal. Beside that, he claims the anthology reaches 7:77 only, which was I Luciferi.Glenn Danzig is a huge fan of comic book art and cartooning. He's made an appearance on the Adult Swim cartoon on Cartoon Network called Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Album:

Danzig is the debut album of the American heavy metal band Danzig, released in August, 1988. The album was the first release on producer Rick Rubin's new label Def American Recordings.Def American's successor, American Recordings reissued the album in the United States and United Kingdom in 1998. It remains the band's best-selling album having been certified Gold in the U.S. in 1994, and has since been certified Platinum.Danzig was recorded at Atlantic Recording Studios and Chung King Metal, and mixed at Smoke Tree and Village. The song "Mother", retitled as "Mother '93" and with live audience overdubs, became a hit on radio and MTV in 1993-94 after a new video-single with live footage was created to mark its inclusion on Thrall: Demonsweatlive. The song was also later included on various hard rock and heavy metal music compilations, and featured in the video games Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, True Crime: New York City, the Guitar Hero series, and F.E.A.R. 3. It also appeared on the soundtrack to the 2013 film The Hangover Part III.Glenn Danzig originally wrote the songs "Twist of Cain" and "Possession" for his previous band, Samhain.Lyrically, "Twist of Cain" is inspired by the biblical story of Cain and Abel. Guitarist John Christ described the recording of "Twist of Cain": “We started writing that song even before Biscuits joined the band. At first we started recording it in G, then at the last minute we decided that A was better. We kept the drum tracks as they were and re-recorded the guitars, bass and vocals. Not many people know this, but James Hetfield (of Metallica) came down and recorded some backing vocals on that track.”Hetfield also recorded backing vocals on "Possession", however, due to contractual reasons he could not be credited in the album insert.A backwards piano track is used during the intro to "Possession".John Christ has described "She Rides" as “Our first sex song...it's such a stripped-down song, just a couple of guitar tracks and almost no bass. "She Rides" probably has the best vocal performance on the album, though. There are also some really weird background noises and moaning sounds on it.”While the album's liner notes expressly state "All songs written by Glenn Danzig", the song "The Hunter" was written by Booker T. & the M.G.'s and Carl Wells. Originally recorded by Albert King, the Danzig version of the song only features slightly modified lyrics.Folk musician Bonnie 'Prince' Billy recorded a cover version of "Am I Demon" for his 2007 EP Ask Forgiveness.

Album:

Danzig II: Lucifuge is the second album by American heavy metal band Danzig. It was released in 1990 on Def American Recordings and was reissued in the USA and UK in 1998 by Def American's successor, American Recordings.Lucifuge has a pronounced blues influence that adds a sinister edge akin to records by Howlin' Wolf or Robert Johnson, who have both been accused of playing the "Devil's music". Thematically, a number of songs throughout the album ask questions about the concept of evil.Glenn Danzig said that the song "Killer Wolf" is “my version of an old blues song about a guy who wolfs around the door of every girl in town.”Glenn Danzig has described "I'm the One" as “another blues song...about a guy realizing his destiny.” "I'm the One" was originally recorded for Danzig's debut album, as John Christ explained: “We actually recorded "I'm the One" for the first record, but we decided to save it for this record. It fit the mood of the second album much better. Glenn wanted to do that song for a long time – he even knew what kind of video he wanted it to have long before we did it. It's a cool song: just some guitar and vocals and a little hi-hat in the background.”The introduction to "Long Way Back from Hell" begins with the use of the dive bomb guitar technique.Guitarist John Christ explained: “We worked on the beginning of that song for a long time before we finally got it right – it always sounded too empty. But when Eerie came in with that galloping bass-line, it all kind of fell into place. It has a lot of energy to it and was probably one of the best songs on that album.”Glenn Danzig spoke about the challenge of writing the song "Her Black Wings": “I always know beforehand what kind of record I want to make. Those ideas dictate how the songs will sound. And sometimes it's not always easy to execute the ideas. For example, writing "Her Black Wings" was a laborious and tedious experience – but that's the way it had to be for the song to come out right.”"777" is a song about "Armageddon" and includes the use of slide guitar."Blood and Tears" is a Roy Orbison-like ballad about “a girl's failed relationship and her subsequent torment”,and is one of Glenn Danzig's personal favorites from the album. The lyrics to "Snakes of Christ" tell of Glenn Danzig's view that the teachings of Christ have been perverted by religious groups.Glenn Danzig has mentioned in interviews the very noticeable similarity between the main riff from "Snakes of Christ" and that of the later Stone Temple Pilots song "Sex Type Thing".Regarding the song "Tired of Being Alive", John Christ has suggested that “Lyrically, I think the words are about the way Glenn was feeling at the time.”The remaining songs feature subjects including love, sex and religious themes.A song titled "The Other Side" was finished but not released on the album.Prior to the album release, Glenn Danzig noted how the band had improved in the interim between the debut recording and the recording of Lucifuge: “Everybody's much more comfortable with each other now. We've toured with each other, hung with each other. The rhythm section is much tighter. It's just a much better band, and that comes through on the album.”Before its release the album had been tentatively titled "777". The title "Lucifuge" is the imperative form of the Latin compound verb lucifugere, "to flee the light", derived from the noun 'lux' (light) and the verb 'fugere' (to flee). If the title is to be taken literally, "Lucifuge" is thus a command: "flee the light", a phrase included in the lyrics to the song "Girl". It could also be a reference to the Grand Grimoire demon Lucifuge Rofocale. Most formats feature the original full-color "faces" album cover, composed of portrait photographs of the four band members: these include the 12" vinyl LP, the audio cassette, and the original pressings of the European and Japanese CDs. The most widely distributed format, the North American CD, features the alternate "chest/cross" album cover, a cropped black-and-white close-up of the photograph of Glenn Danzig found on the back of the LP sleeve and on the interior of all formats. All CD releases feature the "faces" picture on the rear of the CD tray.Early pressings of the CD include a booklet that unfolds into an inverted cross. The booklet features the passage "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do", the King James translation of John 8:44.Newer American Recordings pressings have a "Parental Advisory: Explicit Content" label printed on the booklet artwork; previously this had been a sticker on the outer cellophane wrapping. Like Danzig, this album was issued a Parental Advisory label despite the only instances of profanity being mild and infrequent (in this case, one use each of the word "bastard" in "Long Way Back From Hell" and "Pain in the World", and use of the word "bitch" twice in "Her Black Wings").As with the debut album, Lucifuge was distributed by Geffen Records, but due to the nature of Danzig's music, the company refused to put its name on the packaging.

Album:

Danzig III: How the Gods Kill is the third album by Glenn Danzig's band Danzig, and the highest to chart at the time of its release in 1992 on Def American Recordings. It was reissued in 1998 by Def American's successor, American Recordings. How the Gods Kill was a departure from the previous Danzig album and featured more of a doom and gothic metal sound.Eerie Von considers the album to be Danzig's best, with the band at its peak and able to record most of the basic tracks for each song within a couple of takes.John Christ noted how a lot of time was spent perfecting the guitar sounds for the album. For the quieter moments on the songs "Anything", "Sistinas" and "How the Gods Kill", Christ used a Strat guitar previously played by Jeff Beck. The title song "How the Gods Kill" concerns a search for knowledge and an understanding of oneself.According to John Christ, “That was a real tricky song to write and record. It has so many level jumps and changes in the sound of the guitar. I had to go from a very soft section to a very loud section to an in-between section. If you listen closely, you can hear a hissing noise in the vocals in the intro because we were using a real noisy vocal preamp. We tried everything to get rid of it, but Glenn's performance was so good that we decided to leave it - the mood was just right.”The song "Sistinas" was written during a drum track recording session, as John Christ recalled: “We were in the studio recording drum tracks, and while we were on a break Glenn picked up my guitar and started getting an idea for a song. Then I came up with a little chorus part, and in about an hour or two we had the basic structure of the song. He wanted it to have a Roy Orbison type of vibe with some timpani and keyboards. We used an old Fender amp with a vibrato on it, and we cranked up the vibrato to get those really big chords - it was perfect for that song.”Opening track "Godless" is about feelings of frustration caused by organised religion."Heart of the Devil" was the first song on the album to be performed live by the band, during the European Lucifuge tour in 1991.Later in the same year, it was confirmed that the tracks "Bodies" and "Do You Wear the Mark" had been written for the album.Blues legend Willie Dixon had agreed to guest on the track "Heart of the Devil", but died before the recording session was scheduled. The avant-garde metal band Lux Occulta recorded a cover version of "Heart of the Devil" for their 1998 EP Maior Arcana: The Words That Turn Flesh into Light. The tracks "How the Gods Kill" and "Dirty Black Summer" became popular and remain a permanent fixture in the band's set list. The album's cover is a 1976 painting called Meister und Margeritha (The Master and Margarita) by famous Swiss artist H. R. Giger. For the album cover, Giger modified the original painting slightly, covering "the Master's" erect penis with a dagger bearing his interpretation of the Danzig skull symbol. Giger's version of the Danzig skull was later used as the cover art for the "Dirty Black Summer" single.Like Danzig's other three albums with the original lineup, this album was issued a Parental Advisory sticker, later complete with a "strong language" warning, despite the total absence of profanity.

Album:

Glenn Danzig will release his long-awaited covers record, "Skeletons", on November 27 in North America via Nuclear Blast Entertainment/Evilive Music. The record can now be pre-ordered at this location.A labor of love that dates back to 1979, "Skeletons" sees Danzig pulling back the curtain behind his influences with a collection of ten covers spanning artists as diverse as Elvis Presley, ZZ TOP, and AEROSMITH to BLACK SABBATH, THE TROGGS, THE EVERLY BROTHERS, and more. Recording intermittently between 2012 and 2015 in Los Angeles, he reveals the bone structure for his own style."These are my skeletons," he affirms. "You may or may not know that I dig these songs. You could say that some of this music is the actual basis and skeleton of what I listened to growing up — ultimately informing the kind of music I like. It's the foundation. If you took Elvis and SABBATH out of my life, I probably wouldn't be the Glenn Danzig you know! I'm glad both sides are represented on this record."Among the tracks, he takes Presley's "Let Yourself Go" from the film "Speedway" and transforms it with a swinging distorted stomp and bluesy vocal crescendo. "I thought it was a song I could do something really cool with," he says. "It's also something that I didn't think anyone would necessarily expect. When you tell them you're going to do an Elvis cover, they expect something they know. Not a lot of people know this one. It's actually on the ''68 Comeback Special', and it's worth going back to."He also "Danzig-ized" SABBATH's "N.I.B.", beginning with just guitar, vocals, and half-beat drums bolstered by ominous church bells. Meanwhile, AEROSMITH's "Lord Of The Thighs" grows exponentially heavier in his hands with a swell of pinch harmonics and robust riffing."People might be surprised I like that second AEROSMITH record, 'Get Your Wings'. There are tracks on there, especially 'Lord Of Your Thighs', that stand out to me. However, if you hear theirs and then you hear ours, ours is much heavier," he grins.A rousing cover of THE LITTER's "Action Woman" opens a window into his pre-punk and garage roots, while Danzig brings a blast of intensity to ZZ TOP's "Rough Boy", turning it into a metallic freight train. "I always thought it was such a great song," he continues. "I wanted to make it more linear and run all the way through."THE TROGGS' "A Girl Like You" becomes a punkified juggernaut in his hands with its fuzzed-out guitars, pounding drums and the trademark Danzig sing-a-long choruses. He captures the rebellious spirit of the sixties outlaw biker films with a punked-out take on "Devil's Angels" from the "Devil's Angels" soundtrack complete with his old school MISFITS Dallas Arbiter Jumbo-Fuzz Pedal. Then, Danzig adds a countrified spark to "Satan" from "Satan's Sadists", which, he assures, "You might be surprised, but I didn't change any of the lyrics. I didn't have to!"Danzig's interpretation of "Crying In The Rain" from THE EVERLY BROTHERS instantly captivates. Accompanied only by piano, guitar, and tympani, he accomplishes the mission of making it more "ethereal, sparse, dark, and haunting."Ultimately, "Skeletons" sparks the next phase for Danzig. Helping catalyze his next full-length offering and 2015 tour plans, it's yet another revolution. "I hope people dig it," he leaves off. "I also hope it gives everybody a little bit of insight into the music I listen to and maybe an insight into how I did the songs. If you enjoy it, that's great."According to Glenn, the full skull makeup which he wore for the first time since his MISFITS days nearly 40 years ago for the "Skeletons" photo shoot was inspired by legendary singer-songwriter David Bowie."One of my favorite covers records is David Bowie's 'Pinups' and I wanted to do a take on that and the record is called 'Skeletons' so I decided I'd do the skull face," he told OC Weekly.

Album:

My history with Glenn Danzig as a solo artist has been kinda iffy. I loved his stuff with The Misfits and Samhain, and the first three solo Danzig albums are stunningly brilliant. The fourth had some OK moments, but after that it went downhill for me, and quick. It wasn’t until Circle of Snakes that I started hearing some more stuff I enjoyed; then with Deth Red Saboath I found it to be a fitting return of Elvis Morrison served up from the bowels of Hell. Then a covers album (Skeletons) in 2015 that really left me cold. Some of the covers weren’t bad, but most just weren’t good at all. Danzig are back with the 10threlease of original material entitled Black Laden Crown, and it’s a real mixed bag for me.First the Good: Glenn himself sounds in tip top shape. His voice, an eerie mix of Elvis Presley and Jim Morrison drenched in a gothic, sinister delivery that has become his gimmick, sounds better than ever. His smooth, soulful approach never fails to hit the mark. Rarely have I taken issue with his performances in particular (usually it was forays into styles that left me scratching my head.Next the Bad: The lyrics are a bit much for me to take seriously. Maybe it’s my advanced age, but the kitsch of dark imagery delivered in his unique swagger (like Satan’s very own Dean Martin) just leaves me chuckling and shaking my head. Maybe for the younger, more impressionable fans that haven’t had the dark truth of reality (i.e. adulthood) creep in or maybe you’re a diehard who thinks Glenn can do no wrong (and that’s fine too. I have those bands/performers too. It’s life,) this album will speak to their souls, but I ain’t buying it.Finally the Ugly: I suppose the reason why Glenn sounds so great is because his voice is so much louder and more prominent than the music. I get that he’s the star of the band, but a more even mix would’ve made it sound a lot better (I think.) However, I’m really disappointed in the guitar work of Tommy Victor. He’s usually pretty good about setting a good tone to any album he’s on, but he seems way off his game this time around. The guitar tone is horrendous and there are cringe-worthy moments with some of the playing (not many, but I distinctly recall a couple times where he did something that just was not pleasing to the ear.) And most of the songs just kind of lag on and on, never really going anywhere.I really wanted to like Black Laden Crown. After such a killer return to form with Red Death Saboath, I was hoping for a stronger follow-up (Skeletons is best left ignored and shoved back in the closet if you ask me,) but it really is such a downer. To hear Glenn sounding so great, yet to be pulled down by bad production…bad songs…bad performances? I’m not sure where the blame lies. As the mastermind behind Danzig I’d imagine that he had final say in everything so perhaps the buck stops with him. Of course, I’m one person, and I’ll wager there will be plenty of people that will whole-heartedly disagree with me and perhaps demand my soul in reparations for my disaparging of their favorite performer (jokes on you, I sold my soul for rock and roll a long time ago,) and that’s fine. It’s not going to be the end of the world this review. Check it out, but buyer beware!

Album:

Live on the Black Hand Side is a double-disc live album by American heavy metal band Danzig. It was recorded at various shows between 1992 and 2000 (including Danzig's infamous Halloween '92 show at Irvine Meadows, CA) , and was released in 2001 on Glenn Danzig's Evilive Records label, distributed by Restless Records. It is the first official, full-length live album from the band, however, the 1993 EP, Thrall-Demonsweatlive and select CD singles have featured live material. In fact, Thrall-Demonsweatlive, includes four additional live tracks from the Halloween '92 show that are not included on this release. The original, studio version of the song "Halloween II" was recorded by Glenn Danzig's first band, the Misfits.
