Bio:

Loudness is a Japanese metal band formed in 1981 by guitarist Akira Takasaki and drummer Munetaka Higuchi. They were the first Japanese heavy metal act signed to a major label in the United States, releasing twenty-five studio albums (five in America) by the end of 2012 and reaching the Billboard Top 100 in their moment of maximum international popularity, as well as charting on Oricon dozens of times.Despite numerous changes in their roster, the band continued their activities throughout the 90s, finally reuniting the original line-up in 2001. On November 30, 2008 original drummer Munetaka Higuchi died from liver cancer at a hospital in Osaka at age 49. He was replaced with Masayuki Suzuki. The band has announced that their 26th studio album titled The Sun Will Rise Again will be released on the 4th of June 2014. Loudness played a song from the album called "Immortality" on the 2014 Monsters of Rock cruise.

Album:

"Hurricane Eyes" was the seventh studio album by legendary Japanese metal band LOUDNESS, recorded in the US and released in 1987 worldwide with standard English lyrics. But a "Japanese Version" was subsequently released only in Japan later in the year with most of the lyrics in Japanese, featuring a different mix, song sequence and artwork. For many, this "Hurricane Eyes Japanese Version" is far superior, and to be honest this remastered edition on SHM-CD sounds, indeed, awesome.Produced by legend Eddie Kramer (Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Kiss) with a glossy, American-oriented sound, we have also some other remarkable names involved. The song "So Lonely", a reworked version of 'Ares Lament' from the album Disillusion of 1984, was produced by Andy Johns, another world famous studio guru. And there's super-talented Gregg Giuffria providing all keyboards, plus former Giuffria David Glen Eisley and Tod Howarth (Frehley's Comet, 707, Ted Nugent) helping with backing / harmony vocals to make the choruses more 'American catchy'."Hurricane Eyes" presents a slicker, more 'Westernised' version of Loudness' sound. The progressive tendencies were out, powerful choruses were in, and the production was given a polish the likes of which Loudness' material had never known before. However, while "Hurricane Eyes" was a great hard rock / metal album in its own right, it did not quite feel like a 'proper' Loudness album like 'Disillusion' or 'Devil Soldier'.This was partially down to the lack of aforementioned progressive song structures, already largely stripped away on Loudness previous album, but fans realized, upon hearing this Japanese-language version, that it was the lack of Japanese lyrics that was truly crucial to the trademark Loudness sound. This Japanese Version of "Hurricane Eyes" stands as one of the most powerful Loudness albums, and this is down to the combination of an absolutely cracking songwriting and a career-best performance from vocalist Minoru Niihara. This man had already put on a strong performance on the original English version of this album, but hearing him belt out 'S.D.I.' and 'Strike Of The Sword' in his mother tongue instead of his charming-but-compromised English gives you goosebumps.Musically, "Hurricane Eyes Japanese Version" is not significantly different to the original; the production / mix is supposedly slightly different, as are the arrangements, but I didn't really pick up on these. Maybe I am too busy being blown away by the new-and-improved vocals.Song-wise, this is slick, powerful '80s metal / hard rock along the lines of Dio, Impellitteri, Accept, early Queensryche & Dokken and the like, with some Van Halen feel thanks to Akira Takasaki's hot guitar chops."Hurricane Eyes" it is more focused on catchiness and instant short songs than the Loudness of the past and is frequently criticized for being 'commercial'.However, I'd like to urge such naysayers to listen to Crazy Nights, Let it Go, Geraldine and other older Loudness songs. This band has always had a commercial edge and at least one obviously radio-geared tune per album. As example, here 'Rock 'n' Roll Gypsy' indeed rocks with a commercial hit potential to rival any US hard rock bands at the moment (1987).Overall, the songs can easily be allocated to four categories: the mid-paced slick hard rockers ('Take Me Home'), the fast US metal song ('Strike of the Sword'), the ballad ('So Lonely') and the mentioned above commercial 'hit' ('Rock 'n' Roll Gypsy').These songs are excellent in their own right, perfect examples of the aforementioned categories.Personally, I rank "Hurricane Eyes Japanese Version" much higher than the original 'Westernised' version. The Japanese vocals improve this album immeasurably, as well as the more 'rocking' mix. This remastered reissue on SHM-CD sounds terrific, unfortunately a Limited Release now out of print. You'll have to pay through the nose to get it, but believe me, it's worth it.

Album:

LOUDNESS' "On The Prowl" in Japanese SHM-CD Remastered Edition, a Limited Release long time out of print."On The Prowl" is Loudness ninth studio album, their second and last with American vocalist Mike Vescera before his leaving to join Yngwie Malmsteen's band for the album The Seventh Sign. This is the album were Vescera was fully involved, resulting in the more US Hard Rock sounding recording ever by the legendary Japanese band."On The Prowl" includes 3 new songs (the first in the track list) plus re-works of tracks from early Loudness' albums where Mike Vescera translated and adapted the lyrics to be sung in English. Not only the English lyrics provide a different feeling, but also the fresh arrangements resulted into an almost completely new songs... and what killer songs! This 'Americanized' Loudness sounds much more melodic, groovy hard rockin' than some of the ruckus straight up trad metal of the early Loudness days, but also doesn't back down on the balls.Gutsy numbers like 'Deadly Prayer' feature fast pace and some banshee screams from the capable Vescera, always in control and pitch perfect. Guitar sections are well worked out - Akira Takasaki flexing his skills with power riffs, melodious solos and beautiful rhythms.'Girl' is a rowdy number with heavy drumming, though its subject matter feels glammy, for example - this is pretty much the combination we have with this album in particular; still retaining balls, but with a glammish, commercial edge, while 'In the Mirror' is just all out ballsy cutting US metal.Of course the Vescera era also ushered in a concentration on melodic songs, but Loudness retain the power in the sense of Dokken, for example, this isn't an album without teeth. 'Take it or Leave It' is a rockin' midtempo number which fails to abandon crunching guitar tone and fantastic displays of solo prowess. The new arrangements on 'Long Distance' are almost melodic hard rock where the quality of Vescera's vocals, and the cool tone and skill of Takasaki's guitar shine through. And we have a super power ballad in 'Never Again'.Speaking about the new songs, the opening trio, 'Down ‘N Dirty', 'Playin’ Games' and 'Love Toys', all are killer examples of early '90s US melodic hard rock with tons of groove, sharp riffs and catchy choruses.Special mention goes to production, handled by talented Mark Dearnley (Alien, Bang Tango) who has provided a perfectly polished sound without losing the band's attack.Loudness "On The Prowl" is one of the best hard (melodic) rock albums destined to the US market recorded in the early '90s. The songs are great, musicianship stellar, and production top notch. The sound from this Japanese SHM-CD is incredible, punchy, clear, not saturated at all and with superb dynamics.Fans of polished, melodic, groovy US styled hard rock - think Dokken, Stryper, George Lynch's awesome album Sacred Groove, Keel.

Loudness played a song from the album called "Immortality" on the 2014 Monsters of Rock cruise.

Album:

Nippon Columbia started a 2016 reissue of LOUDNESS eight albums featuring a fresh remastering supervised by the band members for the fist time. These series are low priced and are a great opportunity to get the albums at a very reasonable cost.Let's go with the really strong "Thunder In The East", the first released by a major American label after the contract signed with Atco Records, a subsidiary of Warner Music Group."Thunder In The East" was the record that finally put the Japanese metal pioneers Loudness on the map for the Western metal world thanks to an emblematic cover artwork, a simple but very effective album title and songs that are now entirely performed in English.Thank God, the band didn't abandon their already quite unique sound to appeal to a larger mainstream public and this record still delivers everything one likes about the band.Of course some tracks are really catchy with more radio potential than before but this doesn't mean that they are not technically impressive or original.Opener "Crazy Nights" already proves that the band takes no prisoners and still focuses on gripping Hard Rock and classic Metal riffs plus a catchy chorus and a big feeling of rebellious freedom inside. More truly impressive songs come after. The tracks on the album are all around the four minute mark, being either mid-paced or faster in tempo and all sharing a similar traditional metal / hard rock sound. Having an overly simplistic sound can easily ruin albums, but Loudness pull all of these off with really awesome, and rather unique riffs combined with catchy hooks and lead sections. It's actually amazing how many good ideas these guys have fit into this one album, most of these songs start off really badass, but you'd naturally expect them to get kinda lame, but this doesn't happen. The album is sometimes frighteningly consistent in this aspect, as the good riffs and solos just keep coming. It's all good stuff with numbers such as "Like Hell" and "Get Away" showing off the great riffing and soloing that Akira Takasaki (the Japanese Eddie Van Halen) is capable of, and the choruses to these two are way too awesome."Run For Your Life" is another blast, while "Heavy Chains" has a ridiculously good solo section, easily my favorite on the album. The Japanese always had a talent for great romantic love songs. One in here is the hard rocker "We Could Be Together" that features a cool love message crowned by an epic radio rock orientated chorus.Another half ballad / midtempo comes in the end with the chilling album closer "Never Change Your Mind", a track that should have been into every power ballad compilation. Great tune.Produced by genius Max Norman (Ozzy Osbourne, Y & T) with a slick sound, "Thunder In The East" is shockingly good, especially to someone who has never heard this band before. It's a kick ass album, including songs that will stick with you for days. I couldn't get the "Crazy Nights" riff out of my head the day I heard it.I would recommend this album to fans of more traditional metal, and hard rock fans will love this as well. You definitely may consider this album a hidden gem, it's not perfect, but damn is it good. This whole record screams '80s and has a great vibe full of great riffs, wicked solos, solid vocals and a really catchy feel at the same time, that makes this band unique.Loudness' "Thunder In The East" is a great album, incredibly still unheard by many fans of the genre. These excellent Japanese remasters come to solve this at a very affordable price.

Album:

"Lightning Strikes" was LOUDNESS definitive breakthrough into the US market, and one of their best albums. This Remastered Japanese release on SHM-CD sounds terrific. The album, which was released on July 25, 1986, remained 15 weeks in the American charts, peaking at #64 Billboard."Lightning Strikes" was produced by the great Max Norman (Ozzy Osbourne) which was truly involved in the making of the album, not only helping to shape the sound for Loudness' worldwide appeal, but also writing proper lyrics for the American taste. The sound was a little bit switched to more of a pop-metal feel, something especially notable in opener 'Let It Go', some kind of Van Halen meets Ratt. However, the rest of the album is in a heavier mold, and it's in a relatively similar style to the previous album.Indeed, songs such as 'Black Star', 'Oblivion' and 'Complication' sound like they were written in the Thunder In The East songwriting sessions, with that same energetic almost frantic style of riffing.'1000 Eyes' is a killer rocker in the traditional Loudness style, meaning a catchy, accessible chorus and strong songwriting throughout, with stylish guitar soloing. Then 'Face To Face' kicks hard with a punchy metallic edge.'Ashes In The Sky' (aka Shadows Of War) and 'Street Life Dream' are definitive highlights; both complex midtempo songs with mesmerizing lead and clean guitar. Speaking of which guitarist Akira Takasaki is defiantly at the best of his game here, focusing a little less on frantic riff work in favour for more atmosphere and original chord progressions. The other members of Loudness all play pretty career-best stuff, with vocalist Minoru Niihara improving his English benefited by Norman's help with lyrics. It's a bit typical for Japanese male vocals, but at times he soars higher than expected in the Western style with a fluttering vibrato following closely behind. But Takasaki is really in the spotlight. The track 'Who Knows' deserves a mention as possibly the most un-even hard rock song writing in history. It features seriously one of the best choruses Loudness have ever written. Catchy hooks, heavy, great finger gymnastics, melodic guitar-work, it’s pretty much perfect for Loudness standards. It's like a rollercoaster ride full of ups and downs, original, and that is when Loudness is simply a pleasure to listen to."Lightning Strikes" is one of the strongest hard rock albums appeared in 1986, and honestly there isn't any bad moment here. This Japanese remaster pressed on high quality SHM-CD is truly awesome, perhaps the best I heard from the Loudness catalog. Unfortunately it was a Limited Edition now out of print, and you have to pay over USD 200 for a copy. But don't worry, "Lightning Strikes" has been reissued few months ago as part of the Nippon Columbia low priced series. It's a regular CD, but featuring the same remastering.

Album:

Since its inception in 1981, Loudness has led the Japanese heavy metal scene and embarked on global domination with “Thunder In The East” (1985 / #74 US national chart) and “Lightning Strikes” (1986 / #64 US national chart). They have been frantically acclaimed worldwide. Now, “Rise To Glory”, the first album in four years since “The Sun Will Rise Again”, is going to be released on January 26, 2018 worldwide and for the first time on earMUSIC (world, exclusive Japan). The album is packed with aggression, melody and positive vibes.Vocalist Minoru Niihara says: “The album cheers you up and makes you feel fresh.”From the rock maelstrom of “Massive Tornado” to the young burning passion of “Soul On Fire”, the life-glorifying “I'm Still Alive” and the declaration of metal warfare of “Rise To Glory”, all of them serve as supporter songs for the age of turmoil. The guitar wizardry of Akira Takasaki, hailed around the world as one of the true guitar gods, is featured throughout the album. He admits: “I played lots of guitars, more than any other albums this century. There was soul in the sounds.” His performance would surprise even the most ardent of the fans. Together with the guitar solos on each song, there is amazing playing on the instrumental track, leaning towards the progressive side of the band. Along with the hurtling speed tunes such as “Massive Tornado”, “No Limit” and “Rise To Glory”, the variety of songwriting takes the listener on an amazing journey. “Rain” has the melancholic mood, “Until I See The Light” focuses on the melodic side of the band and “Let’s All Rock” has a heated call-and-response with the audience to recreate their live performance. With “Rise To Glory” and the ensuing major scale world tour, Loudness will embark on the biggest global conquest since the 80s. This is indeed the beginning of their 'rise to glory'.The EU and US versions of the album are accompanied by “Samsara Flight”, a collection of 13 tracks of the band's early classics rerecorded (originally released in Japan in 2016).

Album:

Nippon Columbia and LOUDNESS continue with their campaign celebrating the band albums in its 30th Anniversary. Now, few days ago at the very end of 2018 it was time for this "Jealousy 30th Anniversary [3-Disc LTD Edition Box Remastered]".This 2CD/DVD release includes a bonus disc featuring previously unreleased material."Jealousy'' was the last record of the original Loudness line-up back in 1988 before they reunited in that form in 2001 and released ''Spiritual Canoe''.The mini-album only consists of six tracks with a running time of twenty-eight minutes but the record is considered a regular release by the band. With "Jealousy'' started Loudness' attempt to breach the American metal market. It was released only in Japan, to taste the waters. And you can tell this is pretty Americanized hard rock, with a Californian feeling all over akin Dokken circa 'Tooth and Nail' meets Van Halen. A couple of the tracks are power ballads, also in the US vein of the second half of the '80.As usual, these Japanese Loudness 30th Anniversary releases comes with a bonus disc featuring pre-production, previously unreleased demos from the recording sessions / creative process. Some are previously unreleased, some recorded / finished later, and some evolved into future Loudness' songs. The sound quality is really good, Loudness never recorded cheap pre-production demos.Purists of Loudness' very early era hate "Jealousy'', for me, a fan of melodic hard rock from all times, this is one of the best Loudness albums. It's purely American circa 1988; glammy Californian riffs from VH alumni Akira Takasaki, flashy solos, catchy choruses and a polished production sound.Contains newly remastered tracks in "JEALOUSY," ones without Bass, demo track and more. Comes with a bonus DVD featuring live performance at Himeji Castle aired on TV in 1988 and newly taken interview with Minoru Niihara (subject to change). Also includes a special booklet with rare photos and reprinted tour pamphlet of "JAPAN TOUR'88."

Line-Up:

Akira Takasaki - guitar
Munetaka Higuchi - drums
Minoru Niihara - vocals
Masayoshi Yamashita - bass

+

Keyboards, Synths – Masanori Sasaji
Backing Vocals – Frank DiMino, Paul Raymond, Silky Fujino

Loudness played a song from the album called "Immortality" on the 2014 Monsters of Rock cruise.

Album:

The legendary band LOUDNESS have released a new double album (the first time in their long career) of new songs title SUNBURST – MY WARRIOR aka SUNBURST~我武者羅.First off, the above video is the only sharable sample of music from this album to date. The band released the first of the 2 cds in the set for fans who attended their shows the last month or so of 2021.There have been no promo videos, and the album is yet to available in digital format. There have been no plans of releasing the album outside of Japan to date either. This album is special to the band as it commemorates and celebrates the band’s 40th anniversary of existence! The band has a long and rich history, filled with numerous different line ups over time. Band members have been from other legendary Japanese metal bands like X JAPAN, Anthem and EZO. This double disc, 16 song album, is chock full of the classic Loudness sound and style, borrowing a little from each era. This album has been a labor of love for guitarist extraordinaire Akira Takasaki. He is the only original member to have been in every line up of the band, and it feels like this album, for the 40th anniversary, was to be made special for him and the band’s fans. Akira wrote most of the music and evern the lyrics, which shows the band’s songs being mostly with Japanese lyrics, something they haven’t done in a long time. Akira also assumes some vocal duties on the album. This collection of songs really covers a lot of ground as the band continues to cement it’s legacy as one of the most talented bands in metal history. As mentioned already, the guitar work is second to none as Akira Takasaki, who in the past has been heralded as the Eddie Van Halen of Japan, but his usual fretboard fireworks on full display! Longtime vocalist Minoru Niihara is singing as good as he ever has, not losing a step after a long and busy career. The rhythm of bassist Masayoshi Yamashita and drummer Suzuki “Ampan” Masayuki is incredible, intricate and never boring. This band has always had it all and on this double album effore, it’s all systems go!

Line-Up:

Minoru Niihara - Vocals
Masayoshi Yamashita - Bass
Akira Takasaki - Guitars, Keyboards (additional), Drums (additional), Vocals (additional)
Masayuki Suzuki - Drums

Tracklist:

CD1:

01. Rising Sun - instrumental
02. OEOEO
03. 大和魂
04. 仮想現実
05. Crazy World
06. Stand or Fall
07. The Sanzu River
08. 日本の心

CD2:

01. 輝ける80’s
02. エメラルドの海
