Bio:

Winterborn saw the light of the day in December 2004.The group was formerly known as Mean Machine, a heavy metal cover band that did make quite a big name for themselves. Mean Machine had the same line-up from the beginning as Winterborn has now. The Mean Machine project was formed in the spring of 2003.Their first album Cold Reality was released in 2006 through Massacre Records. The same year they played various shows in Southern and Western Europe with Doro and Benedictum.Their second album Farewell to Saints, was released in 2008 by the Massacre Records.Third album Break Another Day (2024).

Album:

16 years after the release of their last studio album Farewell To Saints, Finnish power metal ensemble Winterborn now return with the follow-up. Dubbed Break Another Day, it will hit the streets later this year. The new music effort was recorded and mixed by Pasi Kauppinen, Jimmy Westerlund and Pasi Vapola. After fifteen years of album abstinence, Finnish melodic metallers WINTERBORN are back with a new album. Two years after their official formation, the debut album "Cold Reality" was released in 2006, followed by a tour supporting Doro and another album in 2008. Although two singles ("Satellite", "Into The Shades Of Gray") were released digitally in 2014, no further longplayer has been released to date. So it's high time for new fodder.WINTERBORN open "Break Another Day" more than befittingly with "Another Sleepless Night", which turns out to be an absolute highlight from the very first listen, even if the whole thing sounds more like cosy rock than hard metal. Singer Teemu Koskela, who has a powerful voice that you don't get to hear very often, is just as impressive. Satellite", which was released ten years ago, is a little more dynamic, but without swinging the heavy club, the midtempo track pleases with a great hookline and a quieter instrumental part as well as a kind of keyboard solo at the end of the track, which I wouldn't necessarily have expected given the catchiness of this number."On The Greatest Day" then kicks into high gear in terms of tempo and justifies the "metal" label for the first time. As usual, it is melodic and features a neoclassical solo, so comparisons with similarly structured tracks by bands such as Avantasia or Kamelot cannot be completely dismissed. "For The First Time Ever" is the first ballad on the album, which is performed with the expected emotionality on the one hand, but even seems a little playful due to the keyboard interludes on the other. Although "Winterborn" also has a pleasing melody line, it comes across as a little edgier than the previous song, both in terms of the riffs and the vocals. In "Washed Away By Tide", WINTERBORN venture into proggy territory to some extent, but without coming across as too cerebral. While another melodic rocker follows with "Now Or Never", "Into The Shades Of Gray" is "only" another, albeit excellent ballad, if you exclude the somewhat more extensive solo part. "Moon From The Sky" not only impresses with another great hookline, the tempo changes between verses and chorus also make this an outstanding song. On "Silver Dreams", WINTERBORN are much more energetic and justify the label "metal" like no other track, but without losing any of their catchiness. The final track "Through Different Eyes" disguises itself as a soulful ballad for a good two minutes until the Finns drop the masks and turn into a changeable, swinging, easily accessible rock song, in which the band once again makes an impressive statement in terms of coherent songwriting. For me, "Winterborn" is an impressive comeback album that should delight fans of melodic rock as well as metal fans. Let's just hope that we don't have to wait another fifteen years for the next disc.
