Bio:

If ever a band inspired by the achievements of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal could be formed in Rybnik, it happened in 2014.Three friends, one goal: Heavy Metal.Zbyszek, Adam and Krzysiek took Michał under their wing, founded IRONBOUND and hired Bartek as vocalist... Exactly in that order. Their first EP, SHE DEVIL, came out. Good reviews confirmed that it was the right direction. Unfortunately, not everyone wanted to follow it. Bartek went his own way and Ironbound met Łukasz on his hard trodden path. Everyone knew how it would end. First the single, then the full, racy, dripping with Heavy Metal album. And then only the conquest of the world...

Album:

Poles Ironbound would appear indeed to be bound to the Iron Maiden way of doing things; Opening track The Witch Hunt – which follows more of a Euro power metal path – aside, these Rybnik rockers are dedicated to extracting the very last flecks of juice from the DNA of the East Londoners and remoulding and remaking the resultant sound for their own purposes. I’ll leave you to decide whether that’s a good or bad thing, but the undeniable fact is The Lightbringer is a rip roaring romp through the Steve Harris playbook whichever side of the argument you fall to.Smoke And Mirrors, four tracks in, is perhaps the album in microcosm, and certainly the best representation of how they go about their business. In six minutes and fifty two seconds they meld the early Bruce period, the proto-prog Maiden of Fear of the Dark and the post-reformation darkness of the later albums into one easily-digestible gobbet of galloping metal glory. There’s no doubting these guys are deadly serious about what they do, and in the end you find your resolution to view this album as a cold, cynical reviewer/listener crumbling as the urge to put your foot up on the coffee table and start air guitaring furiously takes hold. They may be genuinely serious about all this, but there’s also a joie de vivre about the way Ironbound celebrate the NWoBHM that is absolutely impossible to resist. If you’re looking for a point of reference away from the Irons, then the more recent, heavied-up work of Sweden’s Mean Streak is a pretty positive match, but Ironbound are really only looking at one God over the course of this record, whereas Andy Le Guerin and company worship at a few more altars… but there’s still not a lot between the bands in terms of the excitement they’ll generate if you still wear a battle jacket without any hint of irony.Guitarists Michał Halamoda and Krzysztof Całka cut a powerful figure as they riff heroically on the Prisoneresque Children Left By God, whilst bassist Zbigniew Bizoń clanks away underneath like you know who, and if drummer Adam Całka just lacks the swing of Burr and the bombast of McBrain then he still drives the band on admirably from the back as Łukasz Krauze wails away over the top; Once the track fades away into the ether there’s a fair chance you’ll find yourself wishing that Maiden themselves would come up as something as punchy and direct as this in 2021 – well I did, at least!Great stuff then, and if you’re a Maiden fan of any description I think you should give this a spin at least once – they deserve your attention! And if you just like old fashioned metal well played with a heroic attention to detail, this might just be what you’ve been waiting for as well. Get stuck in!The Lightbringer releases on April 30th.

Album:

Poland’s classic heavy metallers Ironbound return next week with their second full length, three years after the very good debut The Lightbringer. The band’s style is immediately reminiscent of nineties-era Iron Maiden and, you guessed it, the solo works of Blaze Bayley. It is indeed meat and potatoes heavy metal, rarely experimenting, guaranteed to please fans for at least a few listens, but not good enough to stay in your player for too long. The problem with Serpent’s Kiss is it plays too safe in trying to replicate the tested formula from the debut with no spread of the imagination. The guitar solos in The Destroyer Of Worlds and Forefathers’ Rites are really good, but the tempos and the structure of almost all of the songs is just too predictable. What I like about Ironbound is their obvious love for this type of metal and their dedication to the band’s cause, creating a killer imagery in their artwork and even having their own mascot. However, much like their British brothers in arms Tailgunner, who released their debut last year, the Polish add very little originality and hooks to what sounds like a different version of the same song. I may be a bit too harsh here, because I am actually a big fan of the genre, even if most of it has been exhausted in the Eighties by Priest, Maiden and Accept. What bands like Tailgunner and Ironbound need to understand is they need much better songs, and they don’t have to be afraid of experimenting and adding their own touch to the picture. This is a problem I’ve discussed with the last few Queensrÿche albums too. The best song of the bunch is undoubtedly Holy Sinners, which just has the hooks and memorable melody to stay in your head for longer. This song reminded me of Stray Gods, who are also emulating classic Maiden, but have better songs, better hooks, and a better vocalist. It’s a very tough competition in classic metal (and not only), especially after the pandemic, the bands are hungry to release new music and make more live shows, so Ironbound need to step up their game considerably for album number three.
