Bio:

Grave Digger, which originated in the glorious 80's heavy metal band is back with a new album! After touring across the world and numerous albums released in the last three decades, the Metal veteran now presents even more of his best and most importantly hardest page: "Return of The Reaper" goes back to the roots and is dedicated to the band classics such as "Heavy Metal Breakdown" (1984), "Witch Hunter" (1985) and "The Reaper" (1993).Dynamic, simple and unique show Gravedigger why they still enjoy playing a pioneering role in the field of heavy metal when it comes to producing good, Teutonic steel.

Album:

Heavy Metal Breakdown is the debut studio album by the German heavy metal band Grave Digger, released on 20 October 1984 by Noise Records. The music in this album is strongly influenced by German heavy metal band Accept and its then-vocalist Udo Dirkschneider.Although singer Chris Boltendahl was credited for all the music and lyrics, it was only a technical issue. "At the time we didn't have the money to enroll all four members to GEMA. So we only enrolled Chris", said Gerd Hanke then-manager of Grave Digger in book The Story of Noise Records. "Lyrics had always been a problem for Chris" - added guitarist Peter Masson. "His school English was quite bad. During my time with Grave Digger, Gerd wrote most of the lyrics." Music composed and arranged by Grave Digger and lyrics by Chris Boltendahl, except where indicated.Germany scene spawned some of the greatest metal bands ever during the 80s, and some of them were also pretty extreme, but different paths were chosen by many of them. Grave Digger was a pretty complex band to get into, for me at least. I don't have any specific reason for that, but one thing I can tell is their albums were not very accessible. By claiming so, I am saying that it can be hard for some people to get into them and dig their material. The band went into many style changes through their career, from being a speed metal band at their debut to become a pretty big power metal band in the German scene. However, the band even changed their name to "Digger" in 1986 and made a glam record in trying to sell more records, resulting in a failed attempt. I finally got into their first album a few years ago and I am quite satisfied with what I have heard from these guys.Released in 1984, the first full-length album of Grave Digger, named "Heavy Metal Breakdown", is one of the first releases in the speed metal genre in Germany. It's with bands like Running Wild, Avenger (Rage), Helloween and such that the scene emerged, before the extreme metal became the new big thing and that those bands switched to power metal. Well, at first, what I really liked about this album is the sound production because it sounds raw and gives a feeling of intensity, especially the guitars, which are amazing. The instruments are pretty balanced overall, but guitars and vocals are mixed over everything, leaving the drums and bass a bit under, but still sounding great, to me at least. On the lyrics, the singer, Chris Boltendahl wrote everything for this album and I would say that they are pretty metal, just by looking at the title of the album you get a good idea of the album content, to be quite fair. What we have on this album is nine tracks, in which one is a cover of The Rolling Stones, for a total of 36 minutes of length. The album kick-off with one of the best track on it, called "Headbanging Man". What a great way to start a record, this song begins with a wild introduction before kicking in the drums and the speed metal guitar riff. It's a classic structured song, but with a great load of energy, especially with its solid chorus and fast-paced beat. Of course, everyone knows the highlight and one of the most popular Grave Digger song, the famous self-titled "Heavy Metal Breakdown". This one has often been compared to Iron Maiden's "2 Minutes to Midnight" because of its main riff similarity. However, the Grave Digger track is a bit heavier and also simpler, it's still a great song, and I like it because of its aggressive feeling. The fastest track is definitely "Heart Attack", this one features a simplish straight toward speed metal riff and doesn't stop during the whole track, a really good song to head bang on!Some experimentation already happened on this album though, with the track "Legion of the Lost", featuring a smooth introduction before the great vocals of front man "Chris Boltendahl" kicks in. His unique vocal tone brought a very interesting aspect on the band's sound, bringing that feeling of intensity on this album, like I said before. Despite having such unique vocal tone, you can probably hear some Accept influence on early Grave Digger's material too. Now, the problem begins when they tried doing ballads, like the boring "Yesterday" track. I don't even know how someone can put a track like this on such album, it just doesn't fit and work. Unfortunately, this is not their first and last ballad, as the material on subsequent albums is quite mixed, as if the band didn't know which sound direction to take. Anyway, even with some flaws and much simplicity, "Heavy Metal Breakdown" is still a good record to enjoy. I listen to it at times and it doesn't disappoint, it's still a very recommendable album and if you like old school heavy/speed metal, you will most likely be pleased by this record.

Album:

Witch Hunter is the second studio album of Grave Digger. It was released on 10 May 1985 by Noise Records. The song "School's Out" is an Alice Cooper cover that was originally released on the School's Out album. All songs composed and arranged by Grave Digger, except where indicated. Lyrics written by Grave Digger except where noted. Not nearly as good as their phenominal debute album, but a quite decent release. It's just as heavy as HMB, with much less fury and attitude to both the lyrics and the music. The opening title tack, 'Witch Huner', picks up right where HMB left off and could have fit perfectly on that debute. Heavy as fuck riffage, with Chris shouting his lungs into the mic with his incredible, gruff vox...."He's a WITCH HUNTER! WIIIIIITCH HUNTER!!!", killer stuff right there (The mid solo just rips!!). The second track, 'Night Drifter' is pretty average when compared to the debute album, though being one of the highlights heard here. The song kicks off with a punishing riff that will keep your ears glued to the speaker, but then slowly fades into nothing more than a solid, decent metal tune. 'Love Is A Game' is one of those enjoyable ballads that Grave Digger has the ability of doing, and is of course another stand out track as opposed to the rest of the 'kick your ass' riffs and licks on the album. Great tune, though it doesn't even come close to 'Yesterday' from HMB. Every remaining track here isn't very memorable on the first listen with the exception of the afformentioned 3 and a real cool cover of Alice Cooper's 'School's Out', better than the original and even better than the version that Krokus did. Perhapse another stand out song here is the last, 'Here I Stand', with much credit to it's galloping riff during the chorus. So overall this doesn't even compare with the debute, but it's still in your face, solid heavy metal!! Not a must have for any metal head but it's DEFINETLY a must have for any Grave Digger fan.Best songs: Witch Hunter, Night Drifter, Love Is A Game, Here I Stand

Album:

War Games is the third studio album by the German heavy metal band Grave Digger, released on 1 February 1986 through Noise Records. The official lyrics of the album have never been released. This isn't a full concept release, though the seond half of the album tells the story about the Enola Gay, when it dropped the atomic bomb over the Japanese town of Hiroshima. Grave Digger's lyrical interests in songs about war was undeniably noticable ever since their first album. Now, they have put the subject together into story told within 3 songs: 'Paradise', 'Enola Gay (Drop The Bomb)', and 'Fallout'. (I'm not too sure if the last tracks, 'Playin' Fools' and 'The End' have anything to do with the story, I can't find any lyrical relation.) The overall sound is slightly better than 'Witch Hunter', including an unbelievable amount of catchiness that lacked on the previous release, and would define the 'extreamly heavy, yet catchy' Grave Digger sound in later albums to come. Still though, the sound isn't as vicious or as hard hitting as the debute. In fact, it's far more polished than the last 2 releases, still keeping the same amount of heaviness. Once again, GD does another heavy metal ballad, and a much better effort this time as opposed to 'Love Is A Game', on WH. And perhapse even a 'tad' bit more enjoyable than 'Yesterday', only due to it's beutiful piano work in the begining, letting it fade into the heaviness. 'The End' is an outro, Grave Digger's first time including any sort of intro/outro on an album of their's.Pretty damn good album, catchy and heavy, most likley to please any metal fan. Even though the concept attempt appears a bit amature when compared to let's say...'Tunes Of War' or 'Knights Of The Cross', it was only experimentation with the band at the time and is still worth a good listen.Best songs: Keep On Rockin', Heaven Can Wait, Love Is Breaking My Heart, Paradise

Album:

One of heavy metal's most reliable and prolific acts is Germany's Grave Digger. The band debuted in 1984 with Heavy Metal Breakdown, and they've released 15 more albums since then as well as a score of EPs, compilations, and live albums. Initially, they played uncomplicated speed metal, but, after a six year hiatus that lasted from 1987 to 1993, vocalist Chris Boltendahl reformed the band with new members and a sound that incorporated power metal influences. Somehow, over 30 years and countless lineup changes, Boltendhal and company have managed to avoid releasing a bad album. Grave Digger's back catalog is certainly uneven, but everything the band has ever released has ranged from decent to great. Now, Grave Digger is set to release their 17th album, Return of the Reaper, on July 15th and Boltendhal is promising a return to the band's early speed metal roots.Return of the Reaper isn't all 80's worshiping speed metal, though. "Hell Funeral," "Season of the Witch," and "Death Smiles At All Of Us" showcase the band's power metal side, and even the hard-charging retro offerings utilize multitracked vocals that give each song an epic air. The album's sole misstep is the final song – a power ballad called "Nothing To Believe." It's not necessarily a bad song, but it doesn't match the tone of the rest of the record at all. And, while Chris Boltendhal certainly has a unique voice, it's not necessarily well suited for a Queenesque tale of lost love.Considering this is Grave Digger's 17th album in 30 years, Return of the Reaper sounds surprisingly fresh and exciting. There's nothing remotely original about the band's music, but, in a world where the metal landscape is becoming increasingly crowded with bands using multihyphenated genre tags, this album is a welcome reminder that pure heavy metal can still compel you to bang your head and pump your fist.

Long-running German metallers GRAVE DIGGER will release a 35-anniversary album, "Exhumation - The Early Years", on October 23. The CD will contain re-recorded versions of the band's "absolute classics with a dynamic and powerful sound of 2015," according to a press release. In a 2014 interview with Metal Blast, GRAVE DIGGER frontman Chris Boltendahl stated about the band's longeviety: "This is the kind of music that I wanted to do when I was 12. When I was 18, I wanted to be a metal star. I worked hard for that, and I've always believed in the music I make. We've always gone our own way through the metal scene, and that's what has allowed us to be here. We are here, stronger than ever!"Boltendahl also credited GRAVE DIGGER's strong work ethic for giving the band the inspiration to keep going, even in the hardest of times."We are Germans; we are very hard-working guys," he said. "We have a very straight kind of thinking, so if we start with something, we really want to carry on with it until the end. That's the magic of GRAVE DIGGER; we're always working hard. Our career goes up and down, we have good times and bad times, but we never think about stopping. We always want to give people the best we can do."GRAVE DIGGER's last studio album, "Return Of The Reaper", was released in July 2014 via Napalm Records. The CD was recorded at Principal Studios (KREATOR, IN EXTREMO, GRAVE DIGGER) in Senden, Germany.Boltendahl previously said that "Return Of The Reaper" would be stylistically reminiscent of GRAVE DIGGER's classic albums "Heavy Metal Breakdown" (1984), "Witch Hunter" (1985) and "The Reaper" (1993).

Album:

Under the banner "Noise Lives!" starts this year a re-release campaign of the back catalog of Noise Records. As a prelude, the label released in May eight best-of albums that did not exist before in this form and composition. Grave Digger from Gladbeck who founded in 1980 and published four years later her debut album "Heavy Metal Breakdown" with Noise Records. Grave Digger may be imagined with their melodic power metal in this phase as a harder version of Accept. A year later the album "Witch Hunter", a joint tour with Celtic Frost and Helloween followed brought an even wider audience close to the band. After the third work "War Games" and some line-up changes the band in Digger renamed and took their last album "Stronger Than Ever" for Noise on. Musically away you look at this work of the three predecessors and relies on mainstream metal. "Let Your Heads Roll" documents this development from Grave Digger impressively and summarizes the most exciting pieces together.

Album:

"Healed By Metal", the new video from German power metallers GRAVE DIGGER, can be seen below. The track is the title cut of the band's new album, which will be released on January 13, 2017 via Napalm Records.Asked if GRAVE DIGGER has ever been "healed by metal," vocalist Chris Boltendahl told Spark TV: "Yeah, I've [been] healed by metal a lot of times in my life. Mostly in bad times. When I listen to metal music, it builds me up again. I think it's a good title for GRAVE DIGGER. There's so many people outside who have problems. I think this record can help some people.Regarding why the band named the album "Healed By Metal", Chris said: "Two years ago, we played a big open-air festival in Moscow. There was a hospital beside the festival [site]. There were people inside who had to listen to metal all day. I said while I was with our sound engineer, 'Oh, the poor people. They have to listen to GRAVE DIGGER all day.' He said, 'Look at me. Yes, all the people are healed by metal.'"Chris also talked about GRAVE DIGGER's goal with the new album. He said: "First, to satisfy ourselves, then to satisfy the people outside. We want to always deliver a piece of quality. This time, it's much better quality, not than the previous albums, but in our own mind. Yeah, I think it's a piece of metal."Legends Grave Digger continue to fly the metal flag with the announcement of a brand-new album for 2017. Entitled "Healed By Metal", the disc will be released on January 13, 2017, via Napalm Records. Classic cuts like “Headbanging Man” and “Heavy Metal Breakdown” quickly established Grave Digger as one of Germany’s pioneering metal acts in the early 80s. Fast forward 36 years since the band’s formation and their attitude hasn’t changed! The title track (and opener) of "Healed By Metal" is a stomping anthem, stoic and proud yet still catchy and beastly. Grave Digger stay true to their no-frills traditional brand of metal on album #18, letting the thunder rain on endless roads (“Lawbreaker”) and indulging in epic melodies (“Call For War”).

Album:

The metal genre, comprised of a hundred and one subgenres, seems to be growing exponentially these days. Every time I sign on to Facebook I am getting invites to like a friend’s new band, messages to check out this band’s new song, getting invited to the latest tour that has been announced. How many times have we heard that metal is dead (or dying) because of the new world of instant gratification and digital (and pirated) music? How many drunk and jaded dudes in camo cargo shorts and Adidas sandals whine about it to you at your local metal shows? Well I for one, see and hear it all the time, and I am so tired of it. Metal isn’t dead – it is evolving and adjusting to our new on-demand world. Truth be told, not a lot of classic ‘heavy metal’ bands have stuck around, despite some of them still clinging to that one successful album they had in 1986. But let’s talk about one of those classic bands that DID stick around – Grave Digger.Grave Digger has been around for nearly forty years – yes you read that right – 40 YEARS. Founded in 1980, the band has released nothing but solid, crushing heavy metal albums including my personal favorites, “The Reaper” and “Tunes of War”. One can’t deny however, the band has grown significantly darker in sound over the years, but strangely, they remain as one of the few classic heavy metal bands that can still write relevant and catchy metal tunes. Their newest release ‘The Living Dead’, set to be released in September of 2018, is a great new addition to their extensive library of great metal albums. It doesn’t take a genius to see that this album has some dark themes, given the grim artwork (a tiny zombie girl wielding a bloody knife – I mean come on). So right off the bat, the album opens with the semi-title track “Fear of the Living Dead” and the tone of the album is set. The song is a perfect way to open the new record, with a great layered chorus, awesome sing-along hooks, and fantastic guitar riffs. “Blade of the Immortal” is a killer track that begins with some of the best atmospheric guitar work on the record, and I absolutely love the chanting chorus. This one is working its way up my ‘Favorite Grave Digger Tracks of all Time’ list for sure (what, don’t you have one of those?).“The Power of Metal” is exactly what it sounds like – yet another metal anthem. The lyrics are just a little cringey, but the drive of the song is catchy and has some cool bass lines. No, this album isn’t one of their strongest, it isn’t groundbreaking or genre defining, and feels slightly formulaic. I can’t hold it against the band though. It’s been forty successful years using a similar formula, why change it now? What the band did do however, was add a good bit of surprise and evolution in, especially with one of my favorite tracks on the record, “Zombie Dance” which is a heavy metal dance collaboration with label-mates Russkaja. This unique track will please classic Grave Digger fans, but also satisfy those that desire a little bit more from the band.Overall, the legendary Chris Boltendahl sounds as gritty and bad ass as ever, Jens Becker and Stefan Arnold keep that rhythm driving hard, Marcus Kniep is great on the keys, but I think Axel Ritt really steals the show on the guitars here. Its no surprise that a legendary heavy metal band has a phenomenal guitarist – but each moment this album made me take a step back and say ‘DAAAMN’ was a killer guitar riff or solo. ‘The Living Dead’ is a solid release from these veterans and is absolutely worth a purchase – but even bigger and better news is that the band plans to take this album on the road for “Tour of the Living Dead” – celebrating 40 YEARS OF GRAVE DIGGER in concert halls around the world!

Album:

With metal anthems like "Heavy Metal Breakdown", Grave Digger is one of the most influential and pioneering bands of the German heavy metal scene since the early 80s and 2020 will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Teutonic metal masters! The ethos of the band has not changed, and yet GD sounds modern and timeless like never before. On the 20th studio album, the band around frontman Chris Boltendahl continues the epic Highlands story. "Fields Of Blood" is the logic consequence of a legendary trilogy and an auditory battle of unique traditional metal! Drifting riff masterpieces such as the stoic “All For The Kingdom” or the epic anthem “Lions Of The Sea” promise earworm and neck muscle training, while "Fields Of Blood" takes us into the vastness of Scotland on a journey through explosive sound landscapes. It's no surprise that the band even recorded parts of the new longplayer in the Scottish Highlands. As a very special highlight of the album, “Thousand Tears” features the incomparable voice of Noora from Battle Beast, refining the most touching metal ballad of the year in a duet with Boltendahl! Even 40 years later, Grave Digger still stays true to the no-frills traditional brand of metal with unwavering pure steel, which nevertheless offers surprises and celebrates such a special anniversary of one of the most successful German heavy metal pioneers in the most glorious style!

Album:

Grave Digger has been an integral part of the German heavy metal scene for over 4 decades. Chris Boltendahl, Axel Ritt, Jens Becker and Marcus Kniep are not only a force to be reckoned with in the live sector, they also regularly deliver high quality heavy metal albums. On the latest album "Symbol Of Eternity", the four continue to spin the story of the Crusaders. After having dealt with it once before on the album "Knights Of The Cross", they devote themselves once again to the fabled history of the Templars. Razor-sharp riffs, opulent choir arrangements and the distinctive voice of Chris Boltendahl are components of Grave Digger's new work. All the trademarks that have made the band stand out for 4 decades can be heard on the album ... an original and hard album is "Symbol Of Eternity". And yet, next to the merciless riffs, like in the opening headbanger "Battle Cry", melodic refrains are always in the foreground ... hard double bass attacks alternating with mid-tempo songs and the almost doom-like title track will make every headbanger's heart beat faster.Grave Digger has never been so varied, being not afraid to think outside the box like on the bonus track "Hellas Hellas" which is a cover of the Greek superstar Vasilis Papakonstantinou in which Chris sings Greek for the first time in his career and the band was even able to win Vasilis himself for some vocal passages. Open your ears and eyes when the new album will be in stores and you can take another journey into the secret world of the Templars ... The king is dead ... long live the king!
