Bio:

In August 1984 guitarist Jan Åkesson and singer Peter Grundström got to know each other after performing at the same show in different bands; Jan was lead guitar in Ravage and Peter was fronting Whitelight. Their meeting led to the conclusion of Jan’s work with Ravage and he became a new member in Whitelight in the fall of the same year.Whitelight’s focus was melodic hard rock, initially influenced by Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Bad Company and then by a ‘new wave’ of English, American and Canadian bands such as Whitesnake, Van Halen, Journey, Toto, Riot, Wrabit and Dokken. Whitelight played many gigs and produced many demos in search of that elusive record deal. After 3 years with Whitelight, in 1987, Jan decided to leave the band and went his own way to spread his wings with tougher, more guitar-oriented hard rock. Peter stayed in Whitelight, who changed their name to Kee Avenue.Jan went on to form new bands Why Not, Perfect Stranger and Dr Blue, playing many very successful gigs and making several acclaimed recordings.Kee Avenue split up in 1991 after the bass player and the keyboard player left the band. After this final breakup Peter went on to play and sing with several different, mostly cover bands, though he kept on writing songs, always looking for the right project to showcase his talent. In 1994 Jan decided to step back from live performance to concentrate on writing and producing songs in his new studio on the emerging digital recording platforms that would soon come to dominate the music industry. Finally, 15 years after the two first played together, Jan decided to give Peter a call, thinking that it was time for a ‘reunion’. A good meal and a few beers was the spark that lit a new beginning. The result was StoneLake.

Album:

In the beginning, I was quite surprised hearing this album had an old-school 'look'. Not ever day do 'new' bands come up with such albums, to tell the truth. Then, I figured out STONELAKE consists of members (mostly) aged 38-42 years old. And, even if World Entry shows an obvious attempt to 'transfer' old shit to the new era via specific songwriting/production, it's quite unclear how many - old and 'fresh' - fans will get what the band aims to. World Entry is both an interesting but also weird album.STONELAKE's main duo comprises of Jan Akesson and Peter Grundstrom. They've been knowing each other for many years, and this is obvious while listening to the album, since there's profound chemistry between them two. This Swedish band has already released one album in prior, Reincarnation in title. For this specific CD I read lots of good comments in the Web, raising my appetite even higher towards World Entry. And, the time has now come…Enlisting the services of Jaime Salazar (ALLEN/LANDE, THE FLOWER KINGS) on drums, World Entry sees the quartet flirting on-the-edge with melodic Hard Rock the Scandinavian way; but not in a Frontiers-related 'path'. STONELAKE's scope seems to primarily bring on the 80s 'melodic' Rock style in the foreground. Pompous keyboards, high-pitched vocals from Grundstrom and furious guitar themes by Akesson leave the band on top of trying to perform something more than just Hard 'n' Heavy music. As if TNT, JOURNEY, (heavy) BOSTON, (80s) DEEP PURPLE and JACOB'S DREAM(!!!) would jam on a beautiful spring day. The album features various tempos and -of course - includes a very good ballad called Words Are Not Enough. On the other hand, tracks like Magic Signs will nail you down at first hearing. The solo work provided by Akesson is quite notable, while Grundstrom uses his voice with much of experience, exchanging fury and passion anyway he wants it. To hell and back again: the use of 'personality' keys in this album gradually rises to be the strong ace of World Entry. Some will surely see enough of a DREAM THEATER influence in the keys' arrangement, and there seems to be a very good reason for this.World Entry is not a typical album, genre-free. It bears the unique charisma of - gradually - winning over your ears. STONELAKE seems to be a rather hard working band in terms of composing/recording. And the question is: do you want to get away with this fact? Even Euro Power Metal fans will like this album.

Album:

STONELAKEare not new in town, their strong musical roots were planted back in the mid 80's only to rise again after several lineup changes. "Marching On Timeless Tales" is their fifth album and the heaviest to date. I can describe STONELAKE as a mix of the new HELLOWEEN with a taste JUDAS PRIEST, at least where the vocals are concerned, while serving a melodic atmosphere of Heavy Metal due to the contributions of the keyboards lines."Red Canyon", the opening track, blazoned with a sharp sound of heavy guitar riffs followed by melodic high note singing. The chorus on this one was a powerful and bombastic point, especially while it laid on the oriental style keyboards. I think that thanks for the amazing heavy riffs, this was their best track in the album. The second track, "Liar", combined some progressive parts along with Heavy / Power Metal. I believe that you would remain speechless after you would listen to the quality high note chanting of the singer Peter Grundström.However, with those two as shining stars, I wasn't that amazed from the rest of the tracklist. It's not about listening to this kind of stuff in the past, yet it is just that I haven't drawn the same kind of enthusiasm as the first two amplified. I wished that all the songs were in the same level of their opening track and its follower, unfortunately I felt as if the rest of the songs were a selection of higher moments along with a lot more low quality mementos. For example, on "Fool With No Denial", STONELAKE wrote, for what I believed to be, their strongest guitar riff ever and suddenly it stopped in favor of a relaxing keyboard verse that just ruined the powerful drive that opened the song. On some of their songs I heard powerful choruses and less strong stanzas and vice versa like on "Lay Down The War" which has a strong opening that continued until the dull chorus. Sometimes there was a feeling that the keyboards were too much in the front of the mix while the true Heavy Metal spirit was pushed back to a rather dark atmosphere.STONELAKE's strongest point is the singer. Their material is good but only one song really stood to become an unbreakable part of my mind.

Line-Up:

Lasse Johansson - Bass

08. Give It Up
09. Winds of Fire

Album:

Much like creating a play for the theatre, constructing an album of music in the hopes of being both timely and timeless almost entirely depends on a careful balance of relevance, novelty, specificity, and unfamiliarity. It's best to approach Stonelake as a band attempting to do just that with this sixth album, bringing to the table something of theatrical complexity under the guise of the easily accessible. As a whole, the album title describes the end result: "Monolith." Not so far removed from the classic metal world, but not exactly anachronistic, the Swedes of Stonelake create a sound that is equal parts 1983 and 2013. Riff sensibility and serving the song rather than the individual musician has become paramount over the band’s discography, easily drawing comparisons to Iron Maiden and Stratovarius. Progressive and power metal are the core of songs like "End This War," "Fanatical Love," and "With Someone Like You," leaning more progressive toward the end of the album. The prog staple of synthesizers has set into the combination of sounds in a delightfully balanced way, refusing to overwhelm even during solos. Annika Argerich's playing is largely supportive, with the key parts usually adding nuances to the soundscape rather than acting as a voice unto its own. Songs like "Will You Be Loved" and "You Light The Way" are where the band excels, between large-scale chorus anthems and a carefully-built and maintained theatrical energy level. "Double Life" rides this balance especially well. Guitarist Jan Åkesson's riffs are playfully wild without going off the map, and his solos show both technical prowess and fun spontaneity. With such a powerful voice, it would take a concentrated effort to avoid connecting with the energy in Peter Grundstrom's searing clean vocals. Like a demon shrieking out in the night, Grundstrom commands high tenor vocal cords as capable as Avantasia's Tobias Sammet, with extended range in his vibrato-laden falsetto. The pairing of Grundstrom, backing vocals by Åkesson, and lyricist Adam Bard, whose work touches each song except for "Notorious," is mostly a fine fit. Clichés are avoided and fresh topics are written about, with even the word "schadenfreude" impressively making an appearance (referring to pleasure derived from the misfortune of others). To complete the total picture of the album, Fredrik Joakimsson's drumming avoids the bad extremes of both the power and prog genres - common plodding and the disregard for the musicality of a fill, respectively. He establishes technical prowess and a penchant for the straightforward in equal measures and is given a shining mix job by recording, mixing, and mastering engineer Jan Åkesson. "Monolith" lives up to its name, cutting a fine form up through and beyond the super-saturated stratosphere of the heavy metal world.

Album:

It is with great pleasure that MelodicRock Records announces the signing of Swedish hard rockers StoneLake for the release of their new studio album "Thunder And Rain". It is the third release in a partnership with StoneLake's founder Jan Akesson, following previous albums from S.A.Y and Jan Akesson’s Shadow Rain. This will be StoneLake's seventh album and their first in 5 years. The band might have a new updated logo, but "Thunder And Rain" is an album of classic StoneLake you know and love: high octane guitar riffs, pounding rhythm section and layers of vocals and keyboards brining the melody. Bound to appeal to fans of Swedish hard rock, TNT, Yngwie Malmsteen and the like.Jan Akesson comments: "We are happy to announce the release of our 7th album 'Thunder And Rain' through Melodic Rock Records! After a break of nearly 5 years, it's great to have finished the work of an album that we are very proud of!" Vocalist Peter Gundstrom: "With this work we are back to the roots where we once started off with melodic songs, harmonies and riffs like the old school! Everything comes from heart and soul and I am very humble still to be able and deliver what I love!" Jan concludes: "To release this album is great, because this means that we are back for the future again! We feel that the songwriting and production gets better all the time and this has no ending as long as we love what we are doing! We would also like to thank Andrew for believing in us and that our cooperation goes on and on!"
