Bio:

Saboter is a Greek heavy metal band founded in 2014 when the members of Greek thrash band Overcast decided to try their hands at traditional heavy metal. Overcast have only released a demo and one album, 2003’s superb yet little-known Under The Face Of Chaos, so it didn’t take long for them to get sidetracked, but hopefully the Overcast project will continue alongside Saboter, who have landed their debut self-titled EP.

Album:

Vocalist Antonis Vailas has an impressive vocal range, evoking at various points famous heavy metal singers like Rob Halford, Sanctuary’s Warrel Dane, and Rage’s Peter “Peavy” Wagner, hitting the high notes with a slight hoarseness that recalls the distinctive voice of Anacrusis, Kenn Nardi. Some of this is no coincidence, as the influences listed in the EP’s press release include both Judas Priest and Sanctuary, along with Metallica, which also soon becomes evident. The songs are uniformly quite good, starting with “Eye Of Terror”, a straightforward rocker with plenty of catchiness in the riffs and chorus. The lyrics have a random, throw-lots-of-aggressive-words-together feel about them, for example the chorus, “Eye of terror, riding the sky, defenders open, fire at blind” and lines like, “Huge death suffocation and fear”. Second track “Land Of Anger” is slower, but just as catchy, with a more impressive chorus and riffs that bear a striking resemblance to Metallica’s “Don’t Tread On Me”. The lyrics are even more mystifying, such as, “Pins spilling white poison” and, “The winter crystalize your blood”. Drawing attention to the words is perhaps a tad unfair in light of the pressure on bands to write in a language that may not be their own, but a quick check with someone whose first language is English may have been a worthwhile exercise.Instrumental tracks can often be no more than pointless interludes, but “Inner Peace” is unusual in that it may be Saboter’s finest moment, with an infectious rhythm section and some excellent lead guitar. Conversely, “Nasty Warriors” is the weak point, an unremarkable tune with the highly clichéd chorus line, “heavy metal maniacs are coming back for you”.Closing track “Redemption” is an improvement; a slightly slower number with yet another catchy chorus that includes Vailas’ compelling instruction to “listen to my voice”.

Album:

The heavy metal act called Saboter (from Athens) return with vengeance, releasing their first full length album, entitled “Mankind is Damned”, which follows the release of their homonymous EP “Saboter” (read EP review here). No long introductions are needed to describe Saboter. They are dangerous hoodlums, having heavy metal as their banner and will probably keep us interested a lot in the years to come. Here we’re dealing with the band’s second effort, but it’s actually their first full album and things have improved greatly. Most noticeably he band has improved its compositions. It seems that Saboter have safely made the next step; and by safely I mean that the group doesn’t deviate from what it previously delivered nor does it experiment out of its waters. Instead the band continues to build on what they set as basis before. The compositions are more mature and complete, although their play is ‘traditional’. The same goes for the vocals, which have improved mainly regarding the low ones (the high pitched vocals had a strong grinding quality that personally didn’t satisfy at some moments). The good thing, though, with Antonis’ vocals is this characteristic theatricality / drama, that adds another quality to the record (listen for example to “Impaler”).This mixing of heavy metal with some elements of thrash metal seems to fit Saboter like a glove. It’s like “Mankind is Damned” sprung out of a chest where 80s American heavy metal (cascaded with a British cloak) gems are hidden. A sophisticated badassery, that is. Breaking the monotony with changes in rhythms (eg “Marching Death”), the complexity of the vocal range, the riffs that stick with you for a long time (listen to the “Sands of Time” to understand) is the recipe of success for Saboter.I think “Mankind is Damned” reflects the modern Greek heavy metal community, indicating that there are bands with guts that can offer much to the scene. Of course, lovers of classic heavy metal have to give it shot, while this record can actually serve as a grand surprise for those who dismiss the local scene for some weird reason.

Album:

Following their formation in 2014, Greek heavy metallers SABOTER have been busy in the recording studio and are set to release their second full length album, Architects of Evil. The new record comes two years after their debut Mankind Is Damned, as the band continue their partnership with No Remorse Records. Three of the five members came from fellow Greek group OVERCAST, while the new record also features guitarist Apostolos Papadimitriou for the first time since he joined SABOTER last year.Kicking things off on Architects of Evil is The Temple of R’lyeh. From the very first second you’re thrown straight into fast paced, skull-crushing heavy metal. The opening riffs from the guitars set the pace, and the way the notes and chords are shredded through seamlessly really keeps you on your toes during the intro. Frontman Antonis Vailas is everything you expect from a heavy metal frontman; delivering an aggressive tone throughout the verses while also reaching the high notes where necessary. The track also slows right down a few minutes in and the sound changes drastically, eventually returning to the same tempo as the intro which leaves you wondering what’s going to happen next through each second. The title track follows next, starting at a relatively gentler pace with the riffs not quite as fast or complex, though that changes not long after. There’s a strong air of thrash metal elements coming into play with this track, mainly due to the fast pace and vocal style, which will appeal to many thrash fans as well as a lot of metalheads in general. The recipe remains pretty much the same throughout the record, which when you consider there are only seven tracks on the album it is not necessarily a bad thing, plus with the tracks being quite long there are changes throughout each one which helps each one stand out more. One of the biggest highlights of the record though is the last song Order of Charity. The beginning of the track, and the first few minutes have a lot of echoes of IRON MAIDEN in it, in terms of the way Vailas‘ vocal delivery being very similar to that of Bruce Dickinson, and the more rhythmic guitar work. It is also the longest track of the record, running at almost 10 minutes and really sums up everything about the band and their sound – one minute you’re listening to classic heavy metal, then it slows down to more of a gentle ballad before returning to a thrash style.Architects of Evil certainly has its plus points, in the way it manages to appeal to so many fans of different sub-genres of metal all at once and showcases SABOTER’s ability in terms of being able to change and adapt different styles while making sure each track flows smoothly from start to finish. That in itself is even more remarkable when you consider that the average runtime for each track is six minutes and the band have put so much material into each one, all of which makes it a good record.
