Bio:

Armored Saint is an American heavy metal band originating from Los Angeles, California, United States.Armored Saint was formed in 1982 by brothers Phil Sandoval (guitar) and Gonzo Sandoval (drums), and guitarist David Prichard, while attending South Pasadena High School. Next to join were singer John Bush - also a South Pasadena High School Alumni - and bassist Joey Vera. Gonzo Sandoval came up with the name after getting stoned with the other band members and seeing the film Excalibur[citation needed] at a theater in Monterey Park. Armored Saint recorded a five song demo that landed the song "Lesson Well Learned" on the compilation album Metal Massacre II. Three of these demo songs were then used for the band's self-titled EP on Metal Blade Records in 1983. The group then signed with Chrysalis Records in 1984.Armored Saint released their debut album March of the Saint in 1984 followed by 1985's Delirious Nomad. The debut album yielded a minor MTV hit with "Can U Deliver?". After the release of Delirious Nomad, guitarist Phil Sandoval left the group. Their third album, Raising Fear, was recorded by the remaining four members. Unhappy with their lack of success on the Chrysalis label, Armored Saint returned to Metal Blade in 1989. Soon after the release of their first live album Saints Will Conquer the band added Jeff Duncan formerly of the L.A. club band Odin as second guitarist who is still in the band to this day. While writing and recording rough four-track demos for their next studio album, guitarist Dave Prichard was diagnosed with leukemia. Prichard succumbed to the disease before recording sessions for Symbol of Salvation began. After a brief hiatus, Phil Sandoval returned to the band to replace Prichard. The following year, Symbol of Salvation was released to widespread critical success. It was dedicated to the spirit and memory of Dave Prichard, whose solo on the demo recording of the song "Tainted Past" was used on the album.Following the successful Symbol of Salvation tour, The band recorded and had hits with "Reign of Fire" and "Last Train Home" in 1991. The following year the band contributed a song to the Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth soundtrack, as well as made a brief appearance in the film. Several months later, John Bush was offered the position of lead vocalist in the very successful thrash band Anthrax. Unsure of Armored Saint's future, Bush accepted the job. The remaining members declined to continue, and Armored Saint was officially disbanded. After Armored Saint disbanded, Joey Vera kept busy playing with such bands as Fates Warning, Lizzy Borden and Chroma Key. He released a solo album in 1994 and started a successful second career as a producer and engineer. In 1999, with Anthrax on temporary hiatus, John Bush and Joey Vera decided to reform Armored Saint. The entire Symbol of Salvation lineup returned to the studio, and in 2000 the album Revelation was released. It included the band's first song with Spanish lyrics, "No Me Digas". A small club tour opening for Dio and Lynch Mob followed. The following year, the band released Nod to the Old School, a collection of rarities, demos and outtakes (many from the Prichard years), plus a few new tracks. Soon after, John Bush returned to the studio with Anthrax, and Armored Saint was once again placed on indefinite hiatus. In 2004, Joey Vera re-joined Bush in Anthrax on a temporary basis, replacing bassist Frank Bello. Early in 2005, Anthrax's Scott Ian announced that their classic "Among the Living"-era lineup was reforming, leaving the membership of Bush and Vera in question. Bush stated his involvement with Anthrax was over, and Dan Nelson took over vocal duties in the band in 2007. This move gave hope to many that Armored Saint would once again record. A one-off show with the Revelation lineup took place in 2005, and in 2006 the band embarked on a new tour.As part of their 20th anniversary, Metal Blade released a special edition of Symbol of Salvation. Also reissued was the band's long out of print live video A Trip Thru Red Times. The band finished recording their new album titled La Raza, which was released on March 16, 2010.On December 7, 2011, the band played the role of opening act for the 30th Anniversary of Metallica show at the Fillmore. On February 11, 2013, Joey Vera officially announced via Facebook and Twitter that the band had begun working on a new album. The album, titled Win Hands Down, will be released on June 2, 2015.

Album:

In 2006, Rock Candy released a remastered version of March of the Saint with additional unreleased demo tracks.March of the Saint is the first album by American heavy metal band Armored Saint. It was released in 1984 on Chrysalis Records and recorded with producer Michael James Jackson who previously worked for Kiss. The debut album yielded a minor MTV hit with "Can U Deliver", but Joey Vera and John Bush later recalled the album's recording as a frustrating and disappointing experience, explaining that Jackson's approach was much more commercial than the heavy metal sound the band had wanted. As Vera recalled in 2006: "At the end of the record we were very unhappy with the production, the mix, the way we worked and who we worked with. And the producer and our manager let us spend over ($)300,000 on our first record. To this day we are still in debt for that one."

Album:

Symbol of Salvation is the fourth album by American heavy metal band Armored Saint. It was released in 1991 on Metal Blade Records and was their last album before going on an extended hiatus that would last until 1999. The songs on this album were written and demoed between 1988 and 1990 with original guitarist Dave Prichard (except "Truth Always Hurts"), who died of leukemia in 1990 prior to recording. The first guitar solo on "Tainted Past" was lifted from a 1989 4-track demo recorded by Prichard. The album was produced by Dave Jerden, who had produced Alice In Chains and Jane's Addiction albums beforehand. Jerden would go on to produce vocalist John Bush's first album with Anthrax, Sound of White Noise in 1993.Symbol of Salvation was the band’s riskiest album put out to date. Not because it had their most complex material, but because of original guitarist Dave Pritchard tragically passing away from leukemia, but the show had to go on. Blood, sweat, tears were poured into this album, and the result would be this diamond gem, a masterpiece, a Picasso painting. This is one of my all-time favorite metal albums, and if any, one of the best heavy metal albums around. Ever. It’s so good, you could probably cure cancer with this thing. Hell, it inspired me to create a character for a comic based on John Bush because of this album...oh, I’m getting carried away.Point is, Symbol of Salvation brings and utilizes much of what made the rest of the Saint’s albums so fresh and unique. Crushing riffs and solos, check. Different and uniquely sounding songs, check. Hard beating drums, check. Bass that’s enough to break glass, check. John Bush’s sultry voice giving orgasms to every living human female in existence? Check, but minus the orgasm part. In all seriousness, Symbol of Salvation has a diverse amount of songs that really make the album stand out from the rest of the crowd, or if any, get squeezed into the likes of Metallica’s Black Album in terms of differing songs.Reign of Fire kicks off with fucking wicked…well, everything. Riffs, drums, vocals. No dragons, however, but there’s plenty of sex. Then in comes Dropping Like Flies, which you can’t help but bop your head to. Semi-ballad Last Train Home kicks in, being the most memorable track in the entire album. Tribal Dance makes mere mention of Pablo Escobar’s drug empire while providing a unique composition utilizing varying percussion instruments, then comes in the semi-mocking Truth Always Hurts, which feels very country like, but mocking in the sense of taunting some hapless bastard that “the truth always hurts”, hence the name. Half Drawn Bridge is an instrumental that just feels welcome at home too, then comes in Another Day, a slow and somber ballad, which I’ll admit, I kinda choked up at (I-I’m a man, okay!? A ma-diddily-an!). Then Symbol of Salvation comes in with a wrecking ball. Hanging Judge, Warzone and Burning Question fill the quota for being metal as hell to tie into the less emotional, but still complex guitars and bass. Lastly, Spineless closes the album off in a tirade of anger that would match Delirious Nomad’s paranoia.Symbol of Salvation had lots, and I mean LOTS of things going for it – and they all succeeded. Grief echoes through the album’s pores, especially on tracks like Last Train Home, Another Day and Tainted Past. It’s melancholic in a sense, as it feels like much of the album’s more prominent lyrical material was written to vent their grief with Dave’s sudden passing (even though it was before he passed). Nevertheless, Symbol of Salvation is the more tragic album to come out of the Saints in a while, but that’s what makes it a masterpiece. While tragedy doesn’t equal brilliance in some cases, here, it does.I should also note the remastered version includes the original 8-track demos, which sound just as good as their final versions, if not better. There’s also an interview segment with Brian Slagel about the production of the album, and it shows a lot of hidden details and history with the band. I won’t go into detail, but it’s still surprising nonetheless. No matter the cost, Symbol of Salvation is an amazing album, if not, important. Important in the sense that it brought the band to some prominence and the fact that it’s a true testament to what heavy metal is. You can’t miss this shit out. Just listen to it and you’ll see what I mean. Now if you excuse me, comic character based on John Bush is waiting for me to tinker with.

Album:

Armored Saint are one of those tried and true traditional heavy metal bands with over 30 years of experience and ten albums; the Saint are still armored with great music. Original members, singer John Bush, bassist Joey Vera, guitarists Phil Sandoval and Jeff Duncan, and drummer Gonzo (Sandoval) carry on the many classic elements of Saints past mixed with new ideas and variety for Punching The Sky."Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants" is a bold title to kick off an album, the soft clean build up to the arrangement segueing in to a classic Saint groove, melody and hook. The ride out gives it a current vibe, already the album feels like a merging of Symbol Of Salvation and 2000's Revelation album. And talk about settling into a groove, damn, if "End Of the Attention Span" instantly doesn't grab you to bang your head and sing, well then maybe you are losing your metal ear. Lots of great solo work too in this one. Drums begin "Bubble", the music more of a modern rock radio interplay between the rhythmic riffs, bass, and drum patterns. Again, more well phrased lead work. Vera takes the helm for the moody "My Jurisdiction", while drums build up the punch (of the sky) for "Do Wrong To None", and wow how this one settles in the catchy, riffy, crunchy rhythm. Really enjoy how this flows between variety in the tempo, riffs, and delivery. "Missile To Gun", "Never You Fret" are the only two that have that direct old school ‘80s Saint feel. "Bark, No Bite" creates a counter balance with the melodic verses and angrier chorus. Bush singing really smooth and clean, grit-less for "Unfair", his moment in the spotlight.Punching The Sky is another balanced album that should please fans and land on journalists best of the year lists.

Album:

Metal Blade Records has just reissued ARMORED SAINT‘s second full length album “Delirious Nomad” in its original, regular version. However, we recommend this Rock Candy Records ‘Remastered & Reloaded‘ release, not only sporting a fantastic sound quality but also 2 extra tracks. After their celebrated debut LP, for second album “Delirious Nomad” the band and the label enlisted the help of seasoned producer Max Norman (Ozzy Osbourne, Y&T) to provide a polished, crisp sound.Since opener ‘Long Before I Die’ you can tell this second album is certainly a more refined, more confident effort than its predecessor, with elaborated, polished songwriting.Standouts like ‘Over the Edge’,”For the Sake of Heaviness’ and ‘In the Hole’ are meticulous studio creations which proved the band’s songwriting talents were indeed improving from strength to strength. The stunning beauty of the epic ‘Aftermath’ with its glorious smorgasbord of harmony guitars, represents a career peak by any standard. ‘You’re Never Alone’ is classic US metal, but the overall album sound & production is really melodic. When you arrive to singer John Bush’s laugh towards the end of final track ‘Released’, you realize this is one of those albums that has all of the essentials to make a classic: incredible songs, crunchy guitar work by the late Dave Prichard, a crushing rhythm section, and one of the best metal lead singers ever in John Bush.Without a doubt, it is one of those albums for the ages. This Rock Candy remastering on “Delirious Nomad” is a noticeable improvement over the CD version Metal Blade put out in the mid ’90s. The main attraction is the excellent 24-bit digital remastering from original source tapes, but there are also a pair of interesting bonus tracks (very good sound) and a complete 16 page full colour booklet full of rare photos and a detailed essay about the recording. In other words, it’s the typical high quality Rock Candy remastered reissue.Great, underrated album tagged as US metal but one that will amaze aficionados to more melodic stuff. If you missed “Delirious Nomad” back then in the mid-80s, give it a proper listen now, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Album:

Surviving a career spanning four decades, ARMORED SAINT has delivered their brand of uncompromising and passionate melodic metal with charging guitar leads and a propulsive rhythm section with valiance. The Los Angeles veterans are now releasing three of their out-of-print classic titles – 1984′s March Of The Saint, 1985′s Delirious Nomad, and 1987′s Raising Fear (which includes the previously unreleased track “Crisis Of Life” for the first time on vinyl). Originally released on Chrysalis Records, ARMORED SAINT returned to their label home of Metal Blade Records (which released their debut EP in 1983) to finally give these highly sought-after albums a proper CD / vinyl release.None can beat the Rock Candy remasters of 1984′s March Of The Saint and 1985′s Delirious Nomad. We recommend these. However this 2022 Metal Blade reissue of ”Raising Fear” features their own Nineties remastering job, and it really sounds meaty.Armored Saint have always been a band to go against the grain, when the world was obsessed with thrash and glam metal in 1987, Armored Saint were kickin’ it back old-school as the band released ‘Raising Fear’.On this 3rd album the band play traditional metal and while they obviously sound influenced by what was going on in the UK in the early 80s, they also manage to take the influences and make them their own, such that the music doesn’t sound extremely European. This kind of traditional sound was somewhat uncommon in the US at the time, as most metal bands either leaned toward poppier, more mainstream sounds or did the exact opposite and went digging for the fastest, heaviest, darkest, most extreme sounds they could. While this album never shows any leanings toward the former, they do show the same sort of melodic metal tendencies as earlier NWOBHM bands on songs such as the title track and ‘Chemical Euphoria’.The songwriting is strong. The riffs are pretty great and never seem too repetitive or boring. The solos are electrifying and fit the songs really well. The vocals, as per the John Bush standard, are excellent. It’s easy to see why other bands wanted him at the time – including Metallica. His voice is strong, confident, and, while it may not be the widest-ranging and most operatic, has the sort of grit that you can only dream of having in this kind of old-school, traditional metal environment. And the band aren’t one-trick ponies either. Not only can they speed up, they can also slow down. And not only can they slow down, they can get downright somber, like on ‘Isolation’, a great track about, well, isolation. And they sound good doing it, just as they sound good on the more energetic and frantic songs. One of the tracks, ‘Saturday Night Special’, is a Lynyrd Skynyrd cover. Rather than simply redoing the song in its original arrangement and style with harder guitars, the band does a complete makeover to fit their style better. It might have been some time since ‘Raising Fear’ was reissued, but this year has Metal Blade Records reissuing ‘Raising Fear’ on digipak CD as well as vinyl for the first time in years.Excellent vocals, great riffs, awesome solos, and a capable rhythm section make this a very good piece of US metal.
