Bio:

All That Remains is an American band from Springfield, Massachusetts formed in 2000.They have released seven studio albums, a live CD/DVD, and have sold over a million records worldwide. The group consists of vocalist Philip Labonte, guitarists Oli Herbert and Mike Martin, bassist Jeanne Sagan and former Diecast drummer Jason Costa, with Labonte and Herbert being the only two original members.Phil Labonte, the vocalist for All That Remains, was originally the vocalist for Shadows Fall and appeared on the cult classic album Somber Eyes to the Sky.After being asked to leave because of "musical differences", Phil focused entirely on All That Remains, a side project he had been working on prior to leaving.Phil has been known to support Boston acts such as Widow Sunday, Bury Your Dead, and Cannae. The band released their debut album, Behind Silence and Solitude on March 26, 2002 through Prosthetic Records. The style of the album differs from their current melodic metalcore musical style they've had since 2006,and more prominently contains elements of melodic death metal. It was also the band's only release featuring the original members Chris Bartlett and Dan Egan.Their second album, This Darkened Heart was released on March 23, 2004 through Prosthetic Records. Produced by Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz, the album featured better production compared to its predecessor. The three singles that were released from the album are “This Darkened Heart”, “Tattered on My Sleeve” and “The Deepest Gray”. Music videos were created for all three. This Is the first album with actual guitarist Mike Martin.

Album:

The Order of Things is the seventh studio album by All That Remains. It was released on February 24, 2015 on Razor & Tie Records. The Order of Things is the first studio album to produced by Josh Wilbur. The album was recorded and produced by Josh Wilbur. The first song released from the album was "No Knock". The song was first posted by Labonte's pseudo-account called "Harrison Ford" with the video that was released on November 14, 2014 entitled "You Found Me".It later on was posted by All That Remains official YouTube Channel.Phil Labonte and producer Josh Wilbur wrote the lyrics for the album together, which is the first time in All That Remains catalogue. Phil Labonte stated about working with Josh: "Honestly, the test for me is, like, when me and Josh [got] done, 'cause we wrote the melodies and the lyrics together; none of the vocals were done before I actually sat down with Josh. This is the first time that anyone has ever had any kind of input onto lyrics. But Josh is the only guy that's actually worked with me about lyrics and stuff, and it's been completely wonderful."A music video was made for 'This Probably Won't End Well'.The album art for this album is based on an upwards view of the ceiling of the Pantheon in Rome, Italy.Phil Labonte stated about the album: "I think this record is far and away better than our last one. It's, in my opinion, far and away better than 'Overcome'." Personally, I think that we have a lot of songs on the new album that are better. He also stated: "I think the record overall is probably leaning 'sing-y.' We've got 12 songs, and there's probably four or five songs that are beginning to end singing. There's some screaming worked into two or three."Drummer Jason Costa stated about the album: "It definitely still sounds like us. But the heavy stuff is heavier, and the faster stuff is faster. We all really challenged ourselves on this album. And the radio stuff is more… not more radio, but there's definitely more singing, there's more melody and stuff like that. But the songs are fast; we have a lot of fast burners on this album. And the double-bass stuff for the heavier songs is really challenging for me this time. The patterns are super-hard, some of them."

Album:

Let me start out by quoting, “I don’t want to write this, cause if I do it might be true,” which sums up how I am feeling as I write this review. These are the beginning lyrics to the second song on this album, titled “Everything’s Wrong”. As I am sure all of you know by now, lead guitarist and co-founding member of All That Remains, Oli Herbert, tragically passed away recently. He was arguably one of the best and most underrated guitarists in heavy metal (and music in general). His flawless solos and memorable riffs will be a forever stamp on the metal community. Victim of the New Disease is another beautiful rendition of his legacy that will live on and through us all.Starting their career in 1998 out of Springfield, Massachusetts, Oli Herbert and ex-Shadows Fall vocalist, Philip Labonte, formed the heavy metal band, All That Remains. They remained the only constant members throughout the band’s career. The lineup for this album consists of: Labonte and Herbert, alongside longtime guitarist Mike Martin, drummer Jason Costa, and bassist Aaron “Bubbles” Patrick (ex-DevilDriver). Victim of the New Disease is their ninth full-length album.I have listened to this album, back to back, for over a week. Not because I needed to digest it, not because I needed to learn to love it, but because I loved it right away. Forget what you think you may know about the direction All That Remains has taken, this album is a perfect mix of everything they do so well. The first track, titled, “Fuck Love”, is angry, aggressive, and all metal. It starts out with intense riffs and screaming vocals. In the middle, things get crazy. Headbangingly, beautifully, crazy. It is an amazing start to an incredible album. There is a huge shift from track one to track two. As I mentioned before, track two is titled “Everything’s Wrong”. This song is a slower one, more of a “What if I Was Nothing” kind of track. Labonte sings more throughout this track and it keeps a fairly steady beat. There is the classic Herbert solo in the middle that breaks it up a bit. Then the shift happens again, this occurs throughout the whole album, which I think is brilliant! Track three, “Blood I Spill,” hops right back into heavier riffs and pinch harmonics. Labonte’s vocals are fierce and dynamic. The guttural screams rocked me to my core.Let me skip to track five, “Alone in the Darkness”. I cannot quite put into words what this song does to me. It is haunting and alluring. I felt like it was speaking to my soul, even with the musical aspect of it. The whole song is so magnificent that it tends to seep into every fiber of my being. I feel it like I haven’t felt a newer song in a long time. My heart hurt, I wanted to cry, but I was comforted. I felt understood in the most strange and sublime way. It is a masterpiece of a song. The next track, “Misery In Me,” quickly yanked me out of this sorrow and comfort with an energetic and extreme riff. Labonte screams in the beginning, but settles into the chorus with his cleaner vocals that he masters so well. This album has shown me his incredible vocal range. He is all over the place, in the most wonderful way. At one point I related him to the Mike Patton of metal. He is genuinely that talented with his voice. It is difficult for me to not automatically pick out Herbert’s guitar work, because he was a genius of his instrument, and the rest of the musicians bring it all together so profoundly, it is the magic of this band. Labonte made me a firm believer in his divergent talents as well. “Broken”, track seven, damn. Epic breakdowns, brutal vocals, serious drums, diverse and splendid. The album ends with the album titled song, “Victim of a New Disease”. It begins with a catchy guitar riff, ferocious vocals, and ruthless drums and bass. It starts to steady into a singing chorus, but quickly dives back into the intensity of metal. Herbert’s solo on this song is my favorite on the album. This album had me, hook, line, and sinker throughout its entirety. It is incredibly diverse, full of unbelievable riffs and prodigious solos, extraordinary drums beats, astounding bass sounds, and awe-inspiring vocals that made me a huge Labonte fan. I liked him before, now I have a whole new respect for him.Who knows what the future holds for All That Remains, but if there is a future, it will be different without Herbert’s indelible and distinctive guitar works. Change doesn’t always or necessarily mean bad, just different. Make sure you get this album and keep his legacy alive through something he clearly enjoyed and was phenomenal at. All these guys deserve the support for so many reasons.

Album:

After several horrible albums from All That Remains, I decided to stop checking on them. Hearing about Oli Herbert’s passing reminded me how good this band sounded back in the day. I always liked Oli’s melodic riffs—basically, that was the main reason I liked ATR in the first place.Last year, I saw their new lineup with the addition of Jason Richardson, who had performed in several notable deathcore bands. I had always been interested in his work. So, after many years, I decided to check back in with one of my favorite metalcore bands, which I think, back in the day, had the best formula: melodic death metal-inspired riffs mixed with chuggy metalcore breakdowns. Phil Labonte’s growls, screams, and clean vocals always fit that style perfectly. As I mentioned, I was already familiar with Jason Richardson’s work. In the opening track, we already hear some modern, chuggy deathcore riffs, which was a big surprise coming from a band that had turned into a hard rock act in recent years. The opening track isn’t anything special, but it gave me hope that some interesting material was ahead—especially since Phil is back to his metalcore-era screams. But the second track already brought back flashbacks of ATR’s classic sound from around 2006, with Phil’s high-level screams and harsh vocals. At the same time, Jason’s influence adds deathcore-oriented breakdowns to the mix, making the song even more interesting for me.I won’t go into every song, but in general, after my first listen, I already felt like ATR was playing heavy music again—not the pop-oriented hard rock they had shifted to. The new album offers several heavy songs full of great riffing and classic ATR-style vocals. Despite the band’s attempt to return to metalcore, there are still a few ballads, but they’re not as soft as in their more “shameful” era.The best example of their return to metalcore era sound is the title track, “AntiFragile.” This could easily be one of their best songs ever. Phil delivers some of his best vocal performances, and the guitar work is as strong as it can be in this genre. In general, the album represents a big step forward in creativity for the band.To summarize the sound, I’d describe it as a mix of “The Fall of Ideals,” “For We Are Many,” and a modern deathcore-influenced style. It’s an interesting formula for ATR, and I hope the band continues on this path. The new lineup has truly brought new life to the band.Metalcore isn’t a genre that catches my attention much these days, but this album is a solid release from ATR, a band that, in my opinion, has several metalcore classic albums which defined genre.A great comeback.
