Album:

Back for the Attack is the fourth studio album by heavy metal band Dokken, released in 1987 through Elektra Records; a remastered edition featuring a bonus track was reissued in 2009 through Warner Music Japan. It is the band's best-selling album, reaching No. 13 on the U.S. Billboard 200[6] and remaining on that chart for 33 weeks.Three singles also charted: "Dream Warriors" at No. 22 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart, "Burning Like a Flame" at No. 20 on Mainstream Rock and No. 72 on the Hot 100, and "Prisoner" at No. 37 on Mainstream Rock."Dream Warriors" was first released earlier in 1987 as the theme song for the horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. The album's title was taken from an earlier Dokken track of the same name recorded during the sessions for Under Lock and Key (1985); it was later released as the B-side to "Dream Warriors". The 2009 remaster includes "Back for the Attack" as a bonus track. At 63 minutes in length and 13 tracks long, it is among the longest heavy metal records to be released on a single vinyl record. The album was the last Dokken studio release before their breakup in 1989, after which they reformed in 1993 and released Dysfunctional in 1995. Dokken toured Japan in April 1988, the material for which was released on the 1988 live album Beast from the East. They also supported Van Halen during their Monsters of Rock Tour 1988 from May 23 – July 30, 1988. It was after this tour that Dokken disbanded.

Album:

The fact that Dokken were never the most tightly bonded quartet has been well documented. Internal rancour and persistent inter-band feuding seemed the order of the day (particularly between vocalist Don Dokken and guitarist George Lynch) yet the by-product of such friction seemed to stir the band to amazingly creative highs as this album firmly demonstrates.Issued to huge acclaim, to a fan base already primed by the platinum success of their previous album Under Lock And Key, "Back For The Attack" is generally regarded as their most accomplished work.Arguably from a guitar stand point, this is Lynch finest guitar hour. He smokes throughout, his amps sounded like they were about combust and his 'attack' and aggresive playing was at high point. It always oved this record.Recording took place over a 10-month stretch, with a total of five state-of-the-art Los Angeles studios being utilised. Originally issued in late 1987, and produced by Neil Kernon (Autograph, Queensryche, Kansas), "Back For The Attack" is a consummate example of late '80s melodic hard rock, stuffed to the rim with all the right moves and grooves.Don Dokken’s instantly identifiable vocals and George solos soak the songs with enough vim and vigour to elevate these songs to classic status.Tracks such as ‘Burning Like A Flame’, ‘Heaven Sent’, ‘Prisoner’ and ‘Dream Warriors’ - the theme song to the hit horror movie ‘Nightmare On Elm Street 3’ - are some of the best tracks the band ever created. This reissue also features as bonus track the title track "Back For The Attack", which strangely did not make it into the original release.Hats off again to Rock Candy, their 2015 remaster sounds awesome. Cleaner, more seperation in the multitracks and double tracked guitar parts. The bass / drums tracks are re-surfaced by the remaster discovering some extra dynamics, as Lynch's interesting rhythms and little embellishments (clean parts) are seemingly higher in the mix. Also, Brown's sometimes dominant hi-hat seems to be a little less in your face, resulting more balanced.

Album:

Dokken, like Tesla, was often incorrectly tossed into the image-over-substance hair band mix. While the Cali group did take their look over-the-top during the mid-eighties, the group, despite constant internal turmoil, stressed the hard rockin' riff. Front man and egomaniac Don Dokken was the weak link, but still held his own from behind the mic. It was fretboard burner George Lynch, bassist Jeff Pilson, and party-on drummer "Wild" Mick Brown that powered the Dokken machine. By the late eighties, George and Don could no longer co-exist, but the group left behind a solid collection of Ameri-rockin' tracks that defined Dokken's stance in the hard crankin' ranks. With Don and kit pounder Brown still hangin' on, accompanied by guitarist Jon Levin and rent-a-bassist Sean McNabb, the four re-recorded several popular Dokken songs for release in 2010. Issued by Deadline Music, Greatest Hits is a brightly polished rework that may suffer from the absence of "Mr. Scary" and Pilson, but manages to pay homage to several tracks from a by-gone era. Lynch's wicked axe work can't be duplicated, but Levin does a credible job fillin' in, and adding back-to-the-eighties styled fretboard fills and whammy-bar thrills. It's Pilson's strong backing vocals that are really missed. Just as bassist Michael Anthony's supporting vocals were a huge part of the Van Halen sound, Pilson's pipes were a key element to the Dokken recordings. The made-for-radio "Just Got Lucky" opens Greatest Hits, which features updated versions of "Breaking the Chains", "Into the Fire", "The Hunter", "In My Dreams", "Unchain the Night", the heavy-handed "Tooth and Nail", and "It's Not Love". The big chorus "It's Not Love" is a grade A example of what Pilson's backing vocals meant to Dokken, as the 2010 cut doesn't hold-up to the original that appears on the Under Lock and Key LP. The Greatest Hits set closes with the underwhelming pairing of "Almost Over" and "Magic Man", which should have been replaced by the likes of "Too High to Fly", "When Heaven Comes Down", and "Paris is Burning".

George Lynch – guitar

Album:

From Conception: Live 1981 is a live album by American heavy metal band Dokken, released in 2007.This album contains rare live recordings allegedly from 1981, before the band released its first album Breaking the Chains. However, the performance is more likely to be from December 1983, as the set list exactly matches known set lists from that time. Moreover, Jeff Pilson is listed as the bass guitar player on the recording, something that could not have been possible in 1981 since Juan Croucier played bass guitar for the group until after 1982. The song "Live to Rock" is featured on this album under this title, but in 1981 this song had different lyrics and was known under the title "We're Illegal". Finally, according to Pilson, the recording is actually from a King Biscuit Flower Hour broadcast from December 1983.[citation needed] Why the album has been marketed as being from 1981 is unknown. There are three previously unreleased songs included on the album: "Goin' Down", "Hit and Run" and "You're a Liar", as well slightly rearranged versions of some tracks from the Breaking the Chains album such as "Paris Is Burning", "Breakin' the Chains" or "Night Rider".

New releases of old, never before seen material, always seem to attract the stigma of being a mere cash grab. However, in some cases this is entirely undeserved, as is the case with this latest live release under the Dokken label. It reaches back better days when George Lynch was still cutting heads for this up and coming 80s sensation, and also showcases the talents of bassist Juan Crouchier (who later ended up in Ratt), who is often overlooked because of the presence of better known and more multifaceted musician Jeff Pilson.Like many of the early acts of the day, Dokken began earning their reputation where it counts in the metal world, on the road. One listen to the first song “Paris” and you’ll understand why this band was signed by Elektra Records and why they became one of the most influential bands in the early to mid 80s. The mere fact that this show was recorded while the band was still something of a local sensation and before having a widely distributed LP to speak of, although I believe that “Breakin’ the Chains” was enjoying regular radio play at this point. As was the case with the better known live album “Beast from the East”, George Lynch just steals the show completely from his catchy riffs, his brief lead fills, all the way to the crazy as hell guitar solos. Just one listen to the 7th track on here and you’ll start saying things that other will think you crazy for saying such as, “Eddie Van Halen sit down!!” or “Randy Rhodes is in some trouble”. Between this, inspired performances of classic songs like “Breakin’ the Chains”, “Nightrider”, “Paris”, and even the previously unreleased speed metal anthem “Liar”, and the utter chemistry that you can feel the band has with the audience, it’s no wonder that George Lynch claiming to be part of an outfit more musically credible than most at that time is not only true, but something of an understatement.Fans of Dokken may not recognize a good portion of the songs on here, not only because of the previously unreleased songs but also because the “Breakin’ the Chains” LP doesn’t enjoy as wide popularity as the ones that came after it, but fans of 80s cock rock and shred should definitely track this down. After more than a decade of disliking to downright hating what this band has put out, I can finally say that something was released that I love, it’s just too bad that it was something old rather than a new studio LP with the original line-up back together and playing the music that they are good at.

Album:

Shadowlife is the sixth studio album by the American heavy metal band Dokken, released in 1997. It marks a change in the band's musical style, moving towards alternative rock. However, critics and fans alike were not pleased with the change, and dismiss the album as one of Dokken's weakest. It is also the last album with original lead guitarist George Lynch. All songs written by Brown/Dokken/Lynch/Pilson, except "Here I Stand" and "I Don't Mind" co-written by Kelly Gray. The infamous Shadowlife will probably go down in history as the worst Dokken album. It’s certainly the most dysfunctional (even though that was the title of the previous, much better album). The dysfunction largely came down guitarist George Lynch, who according to sources at the time, purposely sabotaged the album. He did this to put an end to Dokken, go the claims. Don himself was very unhappy with it, as quotes from the era will reveal (look them up). He also referred to a lead vocal shot (“Here I Stand”) by bassist Jeff Pilson as too “bar band-y”, meaning the lead singer of a pro band is the lead singer, and the bassist is the bassist. Clearly, ego was an issue as well. Not to escape without blame is producer Kelly Gray, who had just ruined the career of Sven Gali a couple years prior. Gray produces, engineers, mixes, and even co-wrote a couple tracks. According to Don, Mr. Gray would not let the band sing their trademark harmonies, opting for grittier more modern sounds. Gray’s trademark distortion on the lead vocals is omnipresent. There are very few standout tracks here, although many have good parts and interesting bits. It is difficult to remember any songs distinctly even after a few listens. The grungy “Puppet On A String” is OK, due to a blazing George Lynch guitar solo (although buried in the mix). It has a heavy groove, but the distorted lead vocal wrecks it for me. “Cracks in the Ground” is better, containing a shadow of the Dokken harmonies, but mired in boring melodies and production. “I Feel” sounds like Dokken, at least. Not really great Dokken, but Dokken nevertheless. The Japanese, always so lucky, got two bonus tracks: “How Many Lives” and “Deep Waters”. Neither stand out any more than the album tracks. Not really a bonus this time, sorry Japan. If anything, these songs detract from the album, by making it a longer, more agonizing experience.

Bio:

Dokken is an American heavy metal band formed in 1978. They split up in 1989 but reformed four years later. The group accumulated numerous charting singles and has sold more than 10 million albums worldwide. The band was nominated for a Grammy in 1989.Dokken was composed of founder Don Dokken on vocals, George Lynch on lead guitar, Juan Croucier on bass and Mick Brown on drums. In 1983 Croucier left Dokken in order to join Ratt and was replaced by Jeff Pilson. Currently only Dokken and Brown remain from the original line-up. After several personnel changes on guitar Dokken's attorney Jon Levin stepped in to fill the role in 2004. In 2001 Barry Sparks replaced Jeff Pilson on bass. In 2009, Sean McNabb (formerly of Great White and Quiet Riot fame) replaced Barry Sparks on bass guitar.

Album:

Dysfunctional is the fifth studio album by heavy metal band Dokken, released in 1995.It was the band's first release after reuniting in 1993.Although the album entered the chart respectably at No. 47 at a time when 1980s hard rock and heavy metal had largely declined, sales quickly dropped off and were not enough to reach gold RIAA certification.According to Don Dokken, the album sold around 400,000 copies. The song "Too High to Fly" was released as a promo single from the album and was a minor hit.As of 2009, it is the only song from the post-1980s portion of the bands' back catalogue that is still performed live, albeit only occasionally. No matter how good the band may have been, when Dokken reunited for a new album in 1995, it was a no-win scenario. They always seemed to be one of those bands that critics loved to hate. I read a ridiculous review of Dysfunctional that said, “If Don Dokken fell in a forest, would he make a sound? And if he did, could they get George Lynch to solo over it for an hour?” What a stupid review. The album deserves a lot of praise, because when Dokken did reunite, the music was as strong as ever. They had discovered modern groove, added onto their lush harmony vocals, and it managed to sell 300,000 copies.Dysfunctional was conceived originally as the second Don Dokken solo album, which just happened to have Mick Brown and Jeff Pilson on it. (Jeff had recently split from Dio.) The record company persuaded Don to call up George Lynch and make it a true Dokken album. Originally George was just supposed to come in and re-do the guitar solos, but Don wanted George’s rhythm. That was smart. George ended up with writing credits on most of the songs in the process.I have to admit that when this came out, a new Dokken album was the last thing I expected to see. Deep into the grunge years, Dokken came out flying with a modern melodic hard rock record with warmth, depth and awesome production values (by Don and Michael Wagener). Raging solos, great ballads, glorious riffs, and those Dokken harmony vocals mark one of the best Dokken albums of their career. It’s certainly lots better than the ones I’ve heard that followed it.There are lots of highlights. No songs suck, but some are better than others. The best tune was the 7-minute single, “Too High to Fly”. I don’t know who came up with the riff, whether it was Don or George, but this song kicks ass. Jeff Pilson gets into a wicked bass groove, dominating the verses. Don’s lead vocal is among his most impassioned and the band is smoking. This is a shoulda-been Dokken classic. I am given to understand that it is the only song from Dysfunctional that is still played live from time to time.Other favourites include “Inside Looking Out”, which shares the same grooving direction. “Long Way Home” is like classic Ye Olde Dokken and could have fit in on Back for the Attack next to “Mr. Scary”. On the softer side, I really like the understated “Nothing Left To Say”, a classy acoustic ballad. Jeff Pilson’s backing vocals coupled with strings create a timeless atmosphere. Then there’s the album epic: “The Maze”, a lush, multi-part progressive song with harmony vocals piled on top of harmony vocals. It doesn’t get thicker than this! The record closes on “From The Beginning”, an ELP cover and another classy acoustic song.I don’t need to tell you how great George Lynch is. The record company were right to get him involved. He helped make this album really special. And that’s not to say that “Wild” Mick Brown or Jeff Pilson don’t bring it, because both of them did and then some. Just that George has a very unique sound. There is only one George Lynch.Dysfunctional is a compulsory purchase if you have ever liked Dokken. It is a shame that the title proved true. George bailed after the dismal followup album (Shadowlife) and Pilson wasn’t far behind. Sad.

Album:

Long Way Home is the eighth studio album by American band Dokken, released in the spring of 2002. It is the only Dokken album which features former Europe guitarist John Norum and the first featuring bassist Barry Sparks. One of the songs on the album, "Heart Full of Soul", is a cover version of the 1965 single by the English rock band The Yardbirds. The song was written by Graham Gouldman of the band 10cc.As of 2011, Long Way Home has sold 410,000 copies worldwide.Alternate versions of the album cover featured a special lighting effect around the body of the model.Long Way Home saw the debut of former Europe (at the time) guitarist John Norum. Give credit where credit is due to Don Dokken for at least always getting quality guitarists to fill in George Lynch‘s very big shoes. Dokken‘s prior album Erase The Slate had Winger guitarist Reb Beach and this time, Don Dokken was able to get Norum. While Beach‘s arrival coincided with a return to form for Dokken with Erase The Slate — which was probably the best Dokken album since Back For The Attack — Long Way Home sees the group regressing and is arguably one of the low points in the band’s career. While Norum does a decent job with his lead guitar playing on Long Way Home, the material for the most part does not really allow Norum to shine. For one thing, there are three ballads on the album with “Goodbye My Friend,” “There Was A Time” and “I’ve Found.” I get the feeling that if Lynch would have been part of the line-up, he would have put his foot down on having too many ballads. However, with Don Dokken likely calling all the shots with both Lynch and Pilson gone, it appears that the singer self-indulged with three ballads. This is not surprising considering Don Dokken‘s solo album Solitary, which came out six years later and which mostly contained material close to the ballads on Long Way Home.Indeed, Dokken found themselves a long way from home or a long way from what they did best. You know you’re in trouble when the best track on a Dokken album is the group’s cover song of The Yardbirds‘ 1965 single “Heart Full Of Soul.” And that’s exactly what happens with Long Way Home. There are a few other decent tracks such as the engaging “Everybody Needs (To Be With Someone)” and the Dokken old school sounding “Under The Gun.” Although I would have thought that Pilson‘s vocals and harmonies with Don Dokken would have been sorely missed, new bassist Barry Sparks apparently did a great job in filling that void. The real problem is on the slower mid-tempo tracks where Dokken usually excel and separate themselves from the pack. The slower mid-tempo songs seem to lack those killer melodies that previous Dokken albums — I am thinking Back For The Attack and prior albums — had. It’s not for a lack of trying but the killer melodies just aren’t there for most of the songs. The opening track “Sunless Days” has a good chorus but the lead up to the chorus could have used some extra work. Add in the rather bleak guitar sound on the track and it is one disappointing song to open a Dokken album. “Little Girl” has some good harmonies but that’s about the only really good part in the song. Out of the three ballads, none will come close to measuring up to “Alone Again” but they’re all pretty good with “There Was A Time” being the best of the three. Funny enough, the opening guitar riffs on “Magic Road” sound like Europe in the second half of their career. The common denominator is of course guitarist John Norum whose been a big part of Europe‘s resurgence in the last 12 years or so. While Norum is not out of place in Dokken, I much prefer the dynamism of Lynch or Beach in terms of their guitar playing over Norum‘s more conservative style.Overall, Long Way Home is a decent album. It’s just not a spectacular album and fares quite poorly when you compare it to prior Dokken albums except for the grunge sounding and Lynch solo / Dokken album Shawdowlife. Dokken‘s Long Way Home is the type of album that I’ll listen to from start to finish once in my CD player but getting it there is the big issue. It looks like it may well be another ten years before I revisit that album again.

Album:

The collection of re-worked '80s hits recorded by DOKKEN few years ago, more specifically its Japan version featuring 2 bonus tracks. As the Japanese release turned out of print, this reissue by UK label Store For Music under the new title "The Anthems" is the one to get, as it's exactly like the Japanese (but with a new cover artwork and digipak case).Don Dokken had his greatest success with Dokken in the mid '80s with great albums like Breaking The Chains , Tooth And Nail, Under Lock and Key and Back For the Attack. The voice of Don and the excellent guitar work from George Lynch were the trademarks of the US Hard Rock. But the band felt apart a few years later.Don came back with an excellent album Up From The Ashes with a mega line-up: John Norum and Billy White on guitar, Mikkey Dee on drums and Peter Baltes on bass. George Lynch came with an even better album Wicked Sensation with his own band Lynch Mob.Both bands didn’t last very long, and George and Don tried to make some magic again together, but seems the chemistry was gone. So George decided to quit the band and continued as solo-artist.Don put Dokken back on the map with awesome guitarist Jon Levin (with a similar guitar style as George) and bass player Sean McNabb. Sean played in bands like Great White, House Of Lords, XYZ and Paul Shortino. This is the combo which re-recorded some Dokken classics and added two new tracks, and a couple of covers originally featured on the original Japanese release. On the album you’ll find ten of the greatest hits from Dokken. They have been re-recorded with the new line-up and I am pleased to say all sound terrific. Jon Levin is monster of a guitarist and Don sounds great in my opinion. There where rumors that the voice of Don wasn’t what it used to be... Don has slightly re-arranged his vocal-lines here to spare his voice, and frankly most of the time he’s gotten away with it. He gets some help from the rest of the band during the harmonies and it all works out perfectly. So we can enjoy classic Dokken tunes like “Just Got Lucky”, “Breaking The Chains”, “Into The Fire” and “Unchain The Night”. Even “In My Dreams” and “Alone Again” - perhaps the more harder to re-create - come out greatly. Perhpas it's in the speedy “Tooth and Nail” where is more noticeable Don's struggle to hit the original high vocal notes, but the groove in the arrangement provides a refreshing new take on the song. The overall resulting sound of these classic songs is a bit more punchier than the originals, and although Jon Levin has a guitar set-up similar to Lynch, he still adds a little touch of his own flair all over."The Anthems" has also 4 new songs to offer, and all are juicy. The First “Almost Over” is a mid-tempo rocker with a great sounding Don accompanied by excellent guitars from Jon. Then “Magic Man” is a truly awesome track, faster & heavier and has that extremely furious guitar riff. Mick Brown’s drumming is outstanding, fiercely bashing the skins. One of the Japanese bonus tracks is “Bus Stop”, a surprising cover from The Hollies from 1966! Don't worry; the smooth vocals from Don and the acoustic guitar from Jon make this a real treat for the ears. The other, “Lies”, is a cover from the one hit wonder from a band called The Knickerboxers (never heard the original). Dokken's version is fun and somehow reminds you Enuff Z'Nuff (plus the Beatles influence) with a scorching guitar solo, and it's perfect to close an album. Many Hard Rock aficionados (and some Dokken fans) didn't know this new line-up of Dokken re-recorded these classic songs - and believe me, this baby worth the purchase.Of course the original '80s recordings are the timeless ones and my favorites, but the new takes featured here seriously Rock.Additionally, you have two new songs exclusive to this release, plus the two Japanese bonus tracks (also exclusive to the Asian version).

Line Up:

Don Dokken - Vocals
Jon Levin - Guitars
Barry Sparks - Bass
Sean McNabb - Bass
Mick Brown - Drums

Tracklist:

01. Just Got Lucky
02. Breaking The Chains
03. Into The Fire

08. Dream Warriors
09. Unchain The Night
10. Tooth And Nail
11. Almost Over (New Track)
12. Magic Man (New Track)
13. Bus Stop (Japan Bonus Track)
14. Lies (Japan Bonus Track)

In 2009, Sean McNabb (formerly of Great White and Quiet Riot fame) replaced Barry Sparks on bass guitar.

Album:

Erase the Slate is the seventh studio album by American heavy metal band Dokken, released in 1999. It is the only Dokken studio album to feature former Winger guitarist Reb Beach and the last one with long time bassist Jeff Pilson. There are two lessons to be learned when it comes to this particular Dokken release. The first is to never judge an album by its cover, and the second is to never write off a band for recording a really bad grunge rock album in the mid 90s and ignore everything they’ve done since unless the band’s name is Metallica. Like a few other bands on both the softer and harder sides of the 80s Metal equation, Dokken learned their lesson and realized that pandering to a scene that will hate you no matter how much you sound like their heroes is a waste of time. Here you will find no nonsense about a “Convenience Store Messiah” or writing songs that lead you to “Bitter Regret”, only a solid blend of rock infused heavy metal with balls so big that your friends will have to sit in the backseat during the drive because they’ll be riding shotgun.Naturally there will be all sorts of airhead pseudo old school types who say that it isn’t a good album because the guitarist isn’t George Lynch. Logic naturally teaches us that despite how good “Mr. Scary” was at churning out an amazing guitar solo, he is not the only expert with a six string at his command. Sure, Reb Beach was in Winger and Whitesnake, but he does one hell of a job here, as he always had in spite of supporting pretentious stage hogs like David Coverdale and Kip Winger. Granted, Don Dokken is known for his forceful stage presence, but for some reasons the guitarists he works with always tend to shine all the more brightly for having been associated with his work, much in the same way as it is when Ronnie Dio takes former glam shredders under his wing and turns them into sinister warlocks prepared to slay the dragon with their guitar screams. When you think about it, recruiting the likes of Reb Beach is the ultimate one fingered salute to every sweat drenched, flannel wearing bonehead that ridiculed their music. You can literally picture these wannabe beatniks running back for their Starbucks lattés like vampires back to their coffins at daybreak when that first killer speed riff on the album’s title track “Erase The Slate” blazes out at 100 decibels. This is classic early 80s speed metal NWOBHM style, right out of the same playbook that gave us “Turn On The Action” and “Tooth And Nail” out of these guys back in 1984. Reb basically matches Lynch’s insanity during the guitar solo, with something of a higher end trebly tone and about twice as many guitar screams, like an air raid siren warning all of the little grunge kids that their precious scene is about to get bombed by 20 tons of explosive 80s riffage. If the slate that this album is talking about is the culmination of every crappy alternative rock abomination that was propagated on rock radio through the 90s, then I’d say that this solid opening song erased that fucker like a bad habit. From here on in things continue on the uptake, as an entire album of heavier yet strongly 80s oriented heavy metal unfolds. “Change The World” is one of those mid tempo catchy fanfares in the vein of “Don’t Lie To Me” and “Breaking The Chains”, but with a less flowery riff approach that comes off as a little darker than the old days. “Haunted Lullaby” invokes some memories of “It’s Not Love” but with a little bit of a modern Rock tinge to it. The riff work here uses a bit of dissonance here and there, as well as a fair amount of Zakk Wylde influences. Perhaps there’s a case to be made that Reb gets a little too guitar scream happy on here, but since we’re chasing down grunge kids for a ritual sacrifice to the gods of non-sucky music, we have to resort to drastic measures in order to get the job done. There are a fair number of surprises on here as well that don’t really conform to the band’s 80s material, but still keep things in the category of kick ass music. There’s a pretty slick remake of “One”, and I’m not talking about the song that Metallica used to simultaneously scare 8 year old kids with scenes of a armless and legless man while paving the way for their own demise via commercial recognition, but rather that late 1960s classic written by Harry Nilsson and performed by Three Dog Night to the shouting approval of a legion of acid pounding flower children. Naturally since the original is pretty strongly non-metal, they needed to burn all of the hippie out of the song with a flashy guitar solo and a much more aggressive vocal delivery. “Maddest Hatter” essentially takes the pre-80s rock elements of “Dysfunctional” and turns it into something that’s catchier and a lot more fun with a little bit of metal riffing, not to mention that Reb’s guitar work is tight rather than meandering. There’s also a nice little hidden track at the end called “Little Brown Pill” where Jeff Pilson challenges “Mr. Scary” for the title with a distorted bass solo that combines the slick bluesy style of Geezer Butler with a bit of Joey Demaio.Though this isn’t really a perfect recreation of Dokken’s 80s music, it’s definitely of a similar caliber in terms of songwriting and performance, in fact I’d put it a notch above “Breaking The Chains”. So what if George Lynch isn’t on this album. Ozzy Osbourne wasn’t on “Heaven And Hell” and Black Sabbath pulled off an excellent album with 3 or the 4 original members, and the same basically applies here. There are probably a sizable number of butt hurt purists who can’t accept another guitarist in this outfit. But if you liked Dokken back when they were still playing music like they meant it, this is something to look into. It’s definitely the first one to check out of the four albums that Lynch is absent on.

Album:

"Beast From The East", the first and best DOKKEN live album has just been remastered by Rock Candy Records, for the first time released outside Japan in all its double disc glory. You know, the original pressing issued in the U.S. was a single disc version which excluded three tracks. Now you can get "Beast From The East" as intended. And with much better sound. For anyone with a taste in '80s hard rock / metal, Dokken pretty much personifies the best musically oriented side of the glam scene, mostly because their image was the only thing glam about them. Along with other acts such as Twisted Sister and Motley Crue, they put the emphasis where it belongs, on the riffs and the attitude. This concert represents a true cock rock band at their absolute best, injecting some loud and raucous sounds into the air and filling up their songs with plenty of vocal and guitar ad libs, not to mention a crowd that is singing along with every chorus, word for word. You get all the hits on this double CD — “Tooth And Nail,” “Into The Fire,” “It’s Not Love,” “Just Got Lucky,” “Breaking The Chains,” “Alone Again,” and “In My Dreams.” Let’s not forget the inclusion of George Lynch’s blistering instrumental “Mr. Scary” where he had the opportunity to showcase his chops. “Just another ‘hair band’ guitarist?” Hardly.Although Lynch clearly steals the show here, one should not discount the performances of the other 3 in this fold.As with every 4 piece band, a lot of pressure is put on the bassist to keep the song centered while the guitarist goes off into shred land; in this Jeff Pilson does not disappoint and succeeds in making up for the lack of a backing guitar track. Likewise Mick Brown really has a strong presence, particularly on the faster songs.Don Dokken, who at this point is still in possession of his full singing range, really outdoes himself and even sounds cleaner on some of the high end screams on “Unchain the Night” and “Dream Warriors” than he did in the studio. There aren’t highlights, the whole damn album is one huge highlight that doesn’t quit until the last track is finished. But it is noteworthy to mention the extra studio track at the end of disc 2, which is sort of a nostalgic 'the road not taken' song that displays how much more great music we might have gotten out of this band if they had been able to get along with each other. By the time the record was released in 1988, the band already had gone their separate ways.“Walk Away” is that studio track, a vintage style Dokken ballad in the same vein as Will The Sun Rise and Alone Again. It’s loaded with amazing guitar work, has a quality vocal performance, and a hypnotically catchy clean guitar riff during the verses rivaled only by the even more hook oriented chorus. While many may think that live albums doesn't need a remastering, this is not the case with Dokken's "Beast From The East". Rock Candy has beefed up the bass lines and overall everything sounds cleaner. But the most important thing is the mastering, now properly done. I mean, the album is now properly 'tracked': the songs start and end where they should be.And now you have the entire show including “Standing In The Shadows,” “Sleepless Nights,” and “Turn On The Action” not present in the original U.S. / European release."Beast From The East" is an album that should be in the collection of any Dokken fan or anyone who likes true '80s hard rock. In fact, this is the best representation of the band's finest era, and even many song versions are superior to the studio originals.

Album:

Dokken, featuring original members Don Dokken, George Lynch, Jeff Pilson and Wild Mick Brown, will release a new live album & video, "Return To The East Live (2016)"! The set is taken from the band's 2016 Loud Park appearance. It will include a brand-new studio track recorded by the original members as well!I well remember the very day that I purchased ‘Beast From the East’ on vinyl from my local record store in 1988 and spinning it relentlessly till I wore it out. The band had just come off the run of their lives with 1984’s ‘Tooth and Nail’ expanding on the promise of ‘Breaking the Chains’ and 1985’s classic ‘Under Lock and Key’ eclipsing even that, before the 1987 opus ‘Back For the Attack’ completed their run of platinum albums before the band went their separate ways largely due to due to “creative and personal differences between Don Dokken and George Lynch”.Well that day when, as The Eagles would say, ‘Hell Freezes Over’ has come and gone. The band got back together, played a few dates and it didn’t come to blows. There’s even a new track here and even more than that – talk of maybe an album featuring the ‘classic’ Dokken line up.For now though let’s just concentrate on what we do have – a CD/DVD Blu-Ray and box set of the Loud Park Festival date on October 8th 2016 that the band played as part of their six date mini tour of Japan that had been preceded by a solitary 29th September 2016 warm up show in Sioux Falls South Dakota – the only reunion show on US soil. The only odd thing about the release I guess is the running order, with the CD for some reason running a completely different order to the live footage – and the latter seemingly not in synch with the running order of the actual show. In truth though it matters not. The fact that this reunion happened at all that is the big news and if I’m honest this was one reunion that I thought was never going to get off the ground. I was at Rock in America in Oklahoma back in 2010 when both Dokken and Lynch Mob played and whilst George played the after party and both bands played sets a short time apart neither seemed ready to even be in the same room. I’m glad this has happened no matter how fleetingly but a live show is not really what the fans are after – what we want is the promise of something new and in these days of file sharing and modern technology the fact is I guess that there’s not even any need to be in the same room or even talk…So the million dollar question is – how does it sound? Lets take the live portion first – it sounds great, not as good as ‘Beast From the East’ where Dokken was a tenor hitting the high notes, sadly the years haven’t treated his voice as kindly as say Glenn Hughes but he’s adapted and I for one kind of like his lower baritone and along with the lower tuning for the songs the ‘new’ 2018 Dokken vocal fits the songs well. There’s a darker, gritter, dirtier take on the songs we all know so well. The other reason it works comes down to some great backing vocals which sonically sort of fill out the sound and deepen the melodies and there’s also the fact that even though this still sounds a little loose here and there Brown, Pilson and Lynch absolutely nail it.Of the live tracks ‘It’s Not Love’ is still the best thing Dokken ever recorded to my ears and I actually like how the song has evolved over the years the rest of the track-listing is pretty much as you’d expect with only ‘Walk Away’ the closer from ‘Beast From the East’ and ‘Heaven Sent,’ which gets an acoustic make-over, missing from the 1988 set. 30 years on this isn’t a bad echo at all.The fans of course will be even more interested in the new song and the two acoustic tracks – the latter being reworkings of ‘Heaven Sent’ and ‘Will The Sun Rise‘ both songs of course ideally suited to such treatment and both sound great here with Lynch’s lead guitar colouring what essentially sound like the acoustic takes that Don was doing with Mark Boals when I last caught him in 2015. I’d like to hear more and must admit I was a little disappointed that we get just the two acoustic takes and EP would have been nice! The new track for some might just be an even bigger treat, and as a first stab ‘It’s Just Another Day‘ isn’t bad – it sounds like Dokken but has a ‘modern edge’ that isn’t pronounced enough to offend the old school or off-putting enough to dissuade new listeners. If I’m honest I’ve liked recent Dokken albums sans-Lynch and liked recent Lynch albums without Dokken and this sounds more like the former to me.It is a song that makes you want to hear more and that can’t be bad can it.Welcome back, sort of…

Album:

As part of the triad of DOKKEN albums remastered by Rock Candy Records, we have here as requested, their first American release “Breaking The Chains“.During the ’80s Dokken were riding a wave of success that had them bracketed in the same league as heavy hitters like Mötley Crüe, Quiet Riot, the Scorpions and Ratt. Constantly on tour and favorites of MTV, the band’s stock was at an all-time high but it wasn’t always like that when an early incarnation of the band first formed in Los Angeles at the very late seventies.Named after Norwegian-American born singer Don Dokken, the band got its first major break playing a series of club dates in Germany around 1981 where they were spotted by feted Scorpions producer Dieter Dierks, who enlisted Don to guide vocal for ailing Scorpions singer Klaus Meine on their ‘Blackout’ album.Taking advantage of Dierks offer to record some demos, the band scored a European deal with the fast rising Carrere label from France.Their debut album – recorded by Don Dokken, guitarist George Lynch, drummer Mick Brown and Accept’s bassist Peter Baltes – was taped at Dierks Studio in Cologne, utilising up and coming German born producer Michael Wagener.Issued in 1981, “Breaking The Chains” sold reasonably well in Europe paving the way for US Elektra Records to sign Dokken and release this revised and remixed version in North America two years later.Attracting instant acclaim the album features several Dokken classics including “I Can’t See You”, “In The Middle”, “Seven Thunders” and the full throttle title track itself.“Breaking The Chains” completes Rock Candy’s first batch of Dokken remasters with 24bit sound shaped technology, a 3500 word essay, unpublished photos and new interview with Don Dokken talking about the surroundings of each recording. This one sounds vital and bright very close to the original in the frequencies spectrum, but with more enhanced dynamics. Many fans would have preferred a remaster of the Carrere mix (featuring the track We’re Illegal replaced here by “Live To Rock”), but let’s face it, this re-touched version made for the US market is technically far better. If you never heard Dokken’s origins, you will be surprised by the rawness, hard attack of “Breaking The Chains”, while if you already own the ’80s pressed CD or vinyl, this Rock Candy reissue worth every cent.Killer record.

Line Up:

Don Dokken – Lead vocals, Rhythm guitars
George Lynch – Lead Guitars
Mick Brown – Drums, Backing vocals
Peter Baltes (Accept) – Bass

Album:

Tooth and Nail is the second studio album by American heavy metal band Dokken, released on September 14, 1984 through Elektra Records. After the unsuccessful release of the band's debut album in the US, the record label was reluctant to give credit to Dokken for a follow-up. Dokken's management struggled to convince the label's executives to give the band another chance and this fight for recognition is reflected in the album's title. This album was the group's first with bassist Jeff Pilson following Juan Croucier's departure to join Ratt. The recording of "Tooth And Nail" was beset with problems amongst the band members about the producer's seat. The first incumbent, studio veteran Tom Werman (Cheap Trick, Ted Nugent) quickly downed tools to be replaced by British studio legend Roy Thomas Baker (Queen, Journey) but only working a day shift, with just three members of the band, before handing over the keys to Michael Wagener to record the lead vocals with Don Dokken at night. It was a bizarre arrangement for sure, but one that, ultimately, produced exciting, if stressful to, results.Songs such as "Into The Fire", "Just Got Lucky", "Heartless Heart" and the power ballad "Alone Again" helped to place Dokken firmly in the big league, providing them with a platinum album.About the Rock Candy treatment: "Tooth And Nail" never has been the greatest sounding hard rock record thanks to a production and mix swathed in echo, reverb and a deep booming snare drum that seemed to suck everything else into its wake. This remaster - handled by Jon Astley - has done miracles: the separation in the tracks lets the layers breath and there seems to be less 'mush'. I don't know if in the process they were able to tweak those booming drums levels (it could almost be remixed in some places) or its simply the greater clarity overall that now doesn't let the drum sound swamp and dominate the whole thing. The guitars and bass lines shine more, better than before."Tooth And Nail" finally sounds crisp, with lots of little accents and doubled parts that originally were buried within its mush. And we have two bonus tracks, being the hard to find edit version of "Just Got Lucky" really treasurable.Excellent release, full of rare photos, a 3,500 word essay and new interview with Don Dokken.

Album:

Under Lock and Key is the third studio album by heavy metal band Dokken, released in 1985 through Elektra Records. The album reached No. 32 on the Billboard 200 chart and remained on that chart for 67 weeks. Two singles also charted: "The Hunter" and "In My Dreams", both reaching No. 25 and 24 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock respectively, with "In My Dreams" at No. 77 on the Billboard Hot 100.Produced by both British studio wizard Neil Kernon (Queensryche, Kansas, Autograph) and Michael Wagener (Mötley Crüe, Extreme) the album spawned a number of classic US Hard Rock tracks which pushed Dokken to international stardom, including "Unchain The Night", "It's Not Love", "Lightnin' Strikes Again" and the chart hit "In My Dreams". Eduardo Rivadavia in his review for AllMusic calls Under Lock and Key "quite possibly Dokken's most 'complete' album, with a little something for every type of fan", like "fist-pumping headbangers", extraordinary "bittersweet mid-paced rockers" ("Unchain the Night" and "The Hunter") and "saccharine ballads". Rivadavia recommends the album as the best introduction to new listeners of Dokken, but notes that heavy metal purists would likely prefer the band's 1984 album Tooth and Nail.Canadian journalist Martin Popoff considers the album "too weighted towards Def Leppard's fat-and-open formula rock", resulting "a bit subdued and predictable" in comparison with its predecessor. The band's glamorous look, the media exposure and George Lynch's "attempt to define the L.A. sound in his own image" do not save Under Lock and Key from sounding "like the work of a band just fed".

Album:

Hell to Pay is the ninth studio album by American heavy metal band Dokken, released in 2004. It was produced by Don Dokken himself and is also the first studio album to feature lead guitarist Jon Levin.Dokken has sort of gone back and forth between being a slightly less light and happy remake of their glory days in the 80s or an all out dark rock/metal outfit since the exodus of long time fret shredder George Lynch. “Hell To Pay” basically has a bit of both, merging the muddy rhythm guitar and bass heavy tone that dominated “Long Way Home” with the consonant melodies and catchy riffs that defined their late 80s sounds. There are a good number of “Back For the Attack” moments on here, albeit presented in a somewhat modernized light. It’s a bit slower and also fairly poetic lyrically, carrying perhaps a small measure of the cynicism that the band exhibited on “Dysfunctional”, but without all the meandering musical ideas and tired 70s rock clichés.This is the first album to feature guitarist Jon Levin as the 6 string guru, and he does well to carve out his own identity rather than parrot one of the three 80s rock icons that preceded him. His style somewhat loosely resembles Lynch’s, though not nearly as much as it would on “Lightning Strikes Again” later on, and tends to work in short bursts, often with more than one lead section in a song. His guitar tone doesn’t quite lean as heavily towards the doom/rock oriented Tony Iommi meets Dave Chandler sound that John Norum incorporated on “Long Way Home”, but it does incorporate some similar riff ideas and largely avoids the trebly, guitar scream happy, flamboyant style that Reb Beach contributed to “Erase The Slate”. Although the songwriting on said album was better than this one, Levin is the better guitarist style wise. All around, the collection of songs on here is pretty solid, though stylistically a tad bit inconsistent. When you listen to high octane speed songs like “Don’t Bring Me Down”, coated with brilliant lead guitar breaks and agitated riffs in the vain of “Tooth And Nail”, or catchy mid-tempo rock that hearkens back pretty heavily to classic “Back For The Attack” style ass kicking, you’re certain that this album is going for a retro sound. But then you throw in darker though still heavily catchy and fun songs like “Escape” and “Better Off Before” and you have a hard time believing that it’s the same album, though Don Dokken’s vocals act as a pretty effective anchor in this respect. If there is one song that really captures the duality at work here, it would be the opener “The Last Goodbye”, which somewhat loosely resembles the atmosphere of “Dysfunctional”, but presents a riff set that is more intricate and attention grabbing. This album will probably appeal to older Dokken fans a little more than “Long Way Home”, but it doesn’t quite go all the way towards that same spirit the way “Erase The Slate” and “Lightning Strikes Again” do. I personally like this album a little better than the latter, mostly because the ballad work is a little stronger here and Don’s vocals aren’t quite as scratchy and haggard sounding. Don’t make the mistake of writing this album off because the guitarist isn’t George Lynch. A lot of guitarists are not George Lynch (Yngwie Malmsteen and K.K. Downing for example), but that doesn’t mean that their playing is any less competent. Leave us not forget that Lynch was a co-contributor to the disaster otherwise known as “Shadowlife”.

Album:

DOKKEN will release an album called “The Lost Songs: 1978-1981” on August 28 via Silver Lining Music. It was during those vital years that a young, motivated Dokken from Southern California stepped into Media Arts Studio in Redondo Beach to lay down some unfiltered, unpasteurized rock ‘n’ roll songs. He then brought those with him to Hamburg, Germany where Dokken (influenced by the likes of Scorpions) forged a historic alliance, working with a young German producer called Michael Wagener, who would later help craft multi-million selling albums for the likes of Motley Crüe, Metallica, and Skid Row – as well as Dokken. From the sunbaked SoCal hook of “Step Into The Light” to the “Back In The Streets” furious, fledgling, late- Sunset Strip sound, “The Lost Songs: 1978-1981” shows Dokken in the unfettered early days of balls-out attitude, as well as showcasing the song-writing skills which would see them sell over 10 million albums and him become an international rock ‘n’ roll star.Further cuts like “Felony” carry a thuggish fuzz-coated riff -think early Van Halen in really greasy embroidered denims- while “Day After Day” showed that Dokken could pen a radio-slaying ballad. The feral edge of “Broken Heart” and developed Dokken trademark of “No Answer” further illustrate the band’s fast growth, with “Hit and Run” standing as the very essence of exactly what Dokken would end up being to millions of ears for years to come. The result is an exciting look back at the genesis of Dokken, and the realization that from the very beginning, Don Dokken was lean, mean and hungry enough to make it all count in the years to come.

Line Up:

Don Dokken – vocals, guitar
Jon Levin – guitar
BJ Zampa – drums
Juan Croucier – bass

Album:

An unapologetic celebration of everything Dokken does best, yet now through a wiser and richer lens, "Heaven Comes Down", the 13th studio album from the legendary American rockers, will be released on Silver Lining Music."The long anticipated new Dokken album 'Heaven Comes Down' is finally done and the first single is titled 'Fugitive'", declares Don Dokken. "The inspiration for the lyrics came from what seems to me to be an uncertain world these days. It's an up-tempo rocker as are many on the album. I don't know what the future holds for our world, so I decided to take a step back and watch it all unfold. Yes, I guess I've become like many these days: a fugitive from life. Hence the title! The song rocks and the lyrics are self-explanatory. Like many songs I've written, it came to me late at night. Inspiration and pure stream of consciousness have always been the best formula for me when composing. It has that classic Dokken sound. A great song to blast when driving down the highway."You want to rock? Sink your teeth into "Fugitive", which rides some shimmering guitar work courtesy of 20+ year member Jon Levin, and if you want ballads, head on over to "I'll Never Give Up", hanging on that Coliseum chorus, Levin laying down a landmark solo. The pattern of "Heaven Comes Down" never falters in delivering the goods on both sides of the fence. "Just Like A Rose" brings the Pacific Coast Highway to desert plains with its smooth, effortlessly driven gears and "Saving Grace" carries a mystical malevolence. But "Santa Fe" is perhaps the most revealing with Don Dokken opening up with what amounts to a 'life-moment biography': a spartan acoustic arrangement allowing the rich yet road-driven vocals to frame what might well prove to be the defining moment of Dokken's career.

Line Up:

Don Dokken – vocals, guitar
Jon Levin – guitar
Chris McCarvill – bass
BJ Zampa – drums

Tracklist:

01. Fugitive
02. Gypsy
03. Is It Me Or You?
04. Just Like A Rose
05. I'll Never Give Up
06. Saving Grace
07. Over The Mountain
08. I Remember
09. Lost In You
10. Santa Fe
