Hawkwind are an English rock band, one of the earliest space rock groups. Their lyrics favour urban and science fiction themes. They are considered a key link between the hippie and punk cultures. Hawkwind are primarily known for playing "space-rock", a hybrid of hard-rock and acid-rock that united the sonic power of the former and the free improvisation of the latter. Formed in November 1969, Hawkwind have gone through many incarnations and styles of music. Dozens of musicians, dancers and writers have worked with the group since their inception.On 21 June 2010, Hawkwind released a studio album entitled Blood of the Earth.Since early 2011 Hone has primarily played bass onstage, while Mr. Dibs has moved to a more traditional lead singer role, supplemented with occasional cello work. April 2012 saw the release of a new album, Onward, on the Plastichead's Eastworld Records imprint. Keyboardist Dead Fred rejoined Hawkwind for the 2012 tour in support of Onward and has continued to perform with the band on subsequent tours.In November 2012, a power trio subset (Brock, Chadwick and Hone) of the current touring line-up released an album under the name "Hawkwind Light Orchestra," titled Stellar Variations, on the Esoteric Recordings sub-label of Cherry Red Records.At the end of March 2013, Hawkwind held a two-day festival, "Hawkeaster", at Seaton Town Hall in Devon. The band chose the Town Hall in an effort to save the venue from closure. Hawkeaster 2013 included the first two Hawkwind performances of The Warrior 2013 Tour, in which the band perform their 1975 album Warrior On The Edge Of Time in its entirety to celebrate the album's 40th anniversary re-release.

From the futuristic, synth-laden opener of ‘Our Lives Can’t Last Forever’ and innovative psychedelic swirl of ‘The Starship (One Love One Life)’ and ‘Traveller of Time & Space’, to the lamenting saxophones and menacing riffs of ‘What Are We Going To Do While We’re Here’ and ‘Stargazers’, the band deliver 13 tracks of classic material.The album has everything Hawkwind fans new and old could ask for – from Dave Brock’s trademark vocals and chugging guitar riffs to roaming solos, gradual melancholic crescendos and rapturous peaks, it’s a record that sits tightly in the Hawkwind groove, delivering an intense concentrated fusion of musical styles.‘Stories From Time And Space’ is presented by Dave Brock, Richard Chadwick, Magnus Martin, Doug MacKinnon and Tim “Thighpaulsandra” Lewis on both CD and double vinyl and will be released to coincide with live shows in the spring and summer.

Album:

Hawkwind are a bit of a misunderstood band, mainly seen as a band adored by druids, lairy bikers and acid casualties, but in an age where steady 4/4 beats and minimalist synth textures are all the rage, their music actually sounds very current. Even if the sci-fi and fantasy themes, seemed archaic and proggy, they never felt overdone, compared to the indulgences of their more flamboyant peers. While their music sounded aggressive enough to be a midpoint between the opposite poles of prog and punk. And despite being active since the 70′s with only one original member (Dave Brock) the band’s current incarnation is ironically less elastic than those that included Nik Turner, Robert Calvert and the late Lemmy Kilminster.‘The Machine Stops’ is the bands twenty-eighth album, and is a sprawling concept album loosely based on EM Forster’s post apocalyptic sci-fi short story. In a parallel fashion to the lyrical themes, ‘The Machine Stops’, has the band on familiar turf, making music that sounds on the surface much closer to their 70′s halcyon days than their previous two albums ‘Blood of the Earth’ and ‘Onward’, ever could, recalling the their smeary effects leaden wall of sound, complete with burbling synths and fuzzed up guitarwork, while also faintly pointing towards their later excursions into punk and new wave in the late 70′s. Bookended with spoken words tracks, the album kicks into ‘The Machine’ a track that contains a mixture of driving hard rock riffs with swirling synths. ‘Thursday’ moves forward at a leisurely tempo, with squalling guitars and the bands trademark airy atmospherics. Then tracks like ‘Synchronised Blue’ and ‘Solitary Man’, taps into the more punkish side of their sound, recalling 1977′s ‘Quark, Strangeness and Charm’ or ’25 Years On’. ‘Hexagon’, ditches the guitars and pushes spacey electronics to the fore. ‘Living on Earth’ is a reminder of their more atmospheric krautrock inflected moments.Like Jeff Lynne’s last ELO album, Hawkwind’s latest album is a back to basics album, that seems aimed at the aficionado’s than the casual fan. while it succeeds in sounding as spacey as their best work, it lacks the hooks and hypnotic sound that made those early records so special. But that aside harder edged tracks like ‘The Machine’ and ‘Synchronised Blue’ are fine tracks, and so are some of the quieter ambient moments like ‘Tube’ and ‘Hexagon’, but there are also tracks like ‘In My Room’ and ‘King of the World’ that feel like underdeveloped fragments rather than cohesive songs. While my disenchantment with ‘The Machine Stops’ is something I didn’t expect when approaching the album. As a recent convert who has recently dived into the deep rabbit hole that is Hawkwind’s back catalogue, I really wanted to like this record. While I think in some respects it gets things right, and there were moments that stuck in the memory, there just wasn’t enough to keep me interested throughout the albums hour long runtime.

We can now announce that the new album "Into The Woods" will be released by Cherry Red Records on May 5. In many ways, it is the perfect sequel to last year’s acclaimed concept studio album and live stage show, "The Machine Stops", which was inspired by E.M. Forster's Sci-fi classic, a dystopian vision of the future brought to life with characteristic Hawkwind style. Warm-up dates for Hawkwind in mid-March are dubbed ‘A Glimpse Into Greenness’, which gives some indication of the conceptual and lyrical themes behind the band’s new album. To promote "Into The Woods", Dave Brock and co. will be touring through May, culminating in what is set to be a memorable show at London’s prestigious venue The Roundhouse on May 26. It will be 45 years since Hawkwind played at the venue’s historic ‘Greasy Truckers Party’ in The Roundhouse and first recorded ‘Silver Machine’!
