Bio:

DeWolff are classic rock band from the Netherlands’ deep south, formed in 2007 by brothers Pablo & Luka van de Poel and Robin Piso. When their psychedelic yet hard rocking, self-titled EP was released in 2008 it immediately conquered the hearts of rock music lovers all across the country and in December 2008 the band played their first show at Paradiso, a legendary venue in Amsterdam. The release of their 2009 debut album “Strange Fruits and Undiscovered Plants” was followed by a successful tour through the Netherlands and Germany. In 2010, then still aged 15, 18 and 19, DeWolff played in front of an audience of 10,000 at Europe’s oldest music festival Pinkpop. In late 2010 DeWolff recorded their second album “Orchards/Lupine”. This record was released in January 2011 and immediately made it to #11 in the Dutch album charts, a huge accomplishment for a young alternative rock band in nowadays’ musical climate. The tour that followed the release of “Orchards/Lupine” completely sold out and in August 2011 DeWolff played in front of an audience of 15,000 at the Hungarian Sziget festival and in front of 30,000 people at the Dutch Lowlands festival.A film crew had followed the band from the release of their debut album until the Sziget performance and in May 2012 the resulting documentary “DeWolff” was premiered at the Amsterdam International Documentary Festival. One month later DeWolff’s third studio album, entitled “DeWolff IV”, was released. As well as some electrocuted, hard rocking tunes, this album also featured a twenty-minute rock opera. DeWolff’s live reputation grew bigger and bigger and their highly energetic concerts, which by now had lead them to France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and even Australia, proved DeWolff to be one of the best and wildest live bands in their league. In search of the sexy Southern swagger to be heard on those old Southern Rock and soul records that by now had become a great influence on DeWolff’s new material, the band travelled to Valdosta, Georgia in early 2014 to record their next album with Grammy award-winning producer Mark Neill. The resulting album GRAND SOUTHERN ELECTRIC sounds like a classic: this album shows a perfect blend of great songwriting and next level riffery on a foundation of some of the grooviest drum grooves known to man and topped by a great vocal performance reminiscent of Leon Russell in his early days. The Grand Southern Electric tour will doubtlessly lead these three wolf men to your town, so make absolutely sure not to miss it!

Album:

Do you remember the glory days? 1973? When Zeppelins stalked the Earth? When stack-heeled guitar heroes coaxed lightning from their pickups? When the Floyd mapped distant lunar reaches, and Ziggy took on the Spiders from Mars, and Purple hewed mighty riffs out of Mt Rushmore? When music thundered? I don’t. But listening to DeWolff, I don’t need to. The thunder is back. And it’s not vintage; not retro; not dad rock or a greatest hits package or a tribute band. It’s alive and it’s electric and it’s brain-crunchingly powerful.Thrust is the band’s sixth outing, and it marks the completion of their move away from the more psych-leaning elements of their early releases and into full-bore rock ’n’ roll punch. If that title sounds like a misogynistic throwback, rest assured that it’s not – it’s Mac from ‘Chicken Run’ with the elastic. ‘Thrrrrrrrrust!’ This music simply flings you around.Proceedings commence with the helicopter chop of ‘Big Talk’, which rumbles along like a herd of tanks, filled with apocalyptic bass synth and Harley Davidson guitar snorts (noticing a theme?). In the grand tradition of the blues-rock power-trio, DeWolff make all that unholy racket with only three instruments – but unlike Cream or Blue Cheer, those instruments are guitar, drums and Hammond organ. The effect is quite staggeringly enormous, and it reminds you why the Hammond was such a key part of rock music for so long – nothing else gives you that same Ent-in-a-bear-trap growl.‘California Burning’ is an incendiary second strike, belonging to the same family as Budgie’s ‘Breadfan’ (later covered by Metallica), and is blessed with the album’s most inspired guitar solo. Pablo van de Poel’s use of the whammy bar is surprisingly sensitive, and it gives the lead break real emotion. That’s the sign of good heavy music – when it’s not just senseless noise, but a series of intelligent, stirring melodies driven to extreme heights. That musicality and variety is carried on through the whole album. ‘Tombstone Child’, for example, can trace its DNA to Sabbath, AC/DC, the Allman Brothers and the Eagles. It opens with a doomy Hammond trudge before bursting out into a duck-walking syncopated riff and a full gospel choir-backed, hollering chorus. You could easily imagine Steve Marriott screaming over the top of it, but, crucially, you don’t have to. DeWolff own their music with such assurance, such total belief, that you’re never left in the position of needing to overlay the glories of the past to make it great. It is great on its own terms. The centrepiece of the album is lead single ‘Deceit and Woo’, which takes an angry swipe at His Trumpness. Clocking in at just over six minutes, it functions as a microcosm of the band’s wide-ranging sound, featuring everything from Ritchie Blackmore-esque blues noodling and Peter Frampton melodicism to wild-eyed MC5 wig-outs and Aerosmith-style peacock strutting. It’s as perfect a piece of rock music as you’re likely to hear. I urge you to seek out the live performance video on YouTube to get the full sense of these guys work. This album took me by surprise. I grew up an absolute devotee of AC/DC et al, and yearned to relive that music in its prime, when it was young and hungry. This is that album. Thrust’ is as 1973 as flared trousers and sideburns, and yet as fresh and free as any of the bright young things tickling the Top 10 today. It’s good, plain and simple.Forget what’s gone before; forget what you think heavy rock is. Listen to DeWolff and encounter something real, something primal, something wonderful: the original and eternal spirit of rock ’n’ roll.

Album:

Not being on tour means more time to work on new song ideas. Holland’s flagship rockers DeWolff made use of this option after the trio had to end their at the time ongoing ‘Tascam Tapes’ tour due to COVOID. After the first disappointment vanished, the decision of not sitting still and waiting ripened quickly. Pablo and Luka van de Poel, together with Robin Piso, started to write and record new songs, which will hit the record stores in early February under the banner of ‘Wolffpack’.‘Wolffpack’ is a typical DeWolff album which contains songs that can’t be put into a standard box. (Psychedelic-) Rock, Soul and Funk blend to an extremely appealing sound collage, which is well thought through and still carries a spirit of improvisation. These songs are certainly not off-the-shelf.No matter if you listen to the mellow ‘Do Me’ or the boomy ‘Bona Fide’, DeWolff offers 48 minutes of rock music that doesn’t fit the standard stereotype. A song you also shouldn;t miss is the swinging opener ‘Yes You Do’, also unveiled as a single prior to the album release. Always provided with an experimental nature and a lot of emotion, the guys cruise through soundscapes that change in the course of this musical ride, but still show a consistent pattern.DeWolff’s ninth studio album comes without filters. ‘Wolffpack’ is a bold and authentic rock album with many nuances and twists. Boredom does not arise at any moment here. ‘Wolffpack’ is music that blows away any dismal pandemic thoughts with an ease.

Album:

DeWolff are not a band to sit still. They thrive on constant motion. From psychedelic southern rock warriors to emissaries of soul. They've released five albums in the last four years, and their new one "Love, Death & In Between" will be out early 2023.Love, Death & In Between is a reaction to their previous two studio albums. Tascam Tapes, which was recorded on the road with a four-track cassette recorder from the 1980s and the socially distanced recording of Wolffpack. The lightning strike moment for Love, Death & In Between came when singer/guitarist Pablo van de Poel attended a sermon in Al Green's church in Memphis,Tennessee. He was profoundly moved by the musical experience, and wanted to create new songs that fit that vibe, almost like a religious experience."For this, we wanted to do something with people, as many people as possible," says Pablo. Recording live to tape, with no overdubs, brothers Pablo (guitar/vocals) and Luka van de Poel (drums/vocals) alongside Robin Piso (Hammond/Wurlitzer) were joined by a host of friends for the recordings.
