The Cult are a British rock band formed in 1983. They gained a dedicated following in Britain in the mid-1980s as a post-punk band with singles such as "She Sells Sanctuary", before breaking mainstream in the United States in the late 1980s as a hard rock band with singles such as "Love Removal Machine" and "Fire Woman". The band fuse a "heavy metal revivalist" sound with the "pseudo-mysticism ... of The Doors [and] the guitar-orchestrations of Led Zeppelin ... while adding touches of post-punk goth rock".Since their earliest form in Bradford during 1981, the band have had various line-ups; the longest-serving members are vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, the band's two songwriters.After moving to London, the band released the album Love in 1985, which charted at No. 4 in the United Kingdom, and which included singles such as "She Sells Sanctuary" and "Rain". In the late 1980s, the band supplemented their post-punk sound with hard rock in their third album, Electric; the polish on this new sound was facilitated by Rick Rubin, who produced the record. Their fourth album, Sonic Temple, proceeded in a similar vein, and these two LPs enabled them to break into the North American market. By the early 1990s, the band were fraying behind the scenes, due to alcohol abuse and off-stage tensions, leading to a split-up in 1995.[1] The band reunited in 1999 and recorded the album Beyond Good and Evil, and they reissued all of their albums in Asia and Eastern Europe in 2003 and Japan in 2004. In 2006, the band reformed again to perform a series of worldwide tours. In October 2007, the band released the album Born into This, on the Roadrunner Records label.In July 2009, Astbury announced that The Cult would not record or produce any more studio albums, focusing on EPs and Digital Releases instead for new material, though he subsequently changed his mind and declared that there would be another album in the near future. Their ninth studio album, entitled Choice of Weapon, was released on 22 May 2012. The Cult are currently working on a tenth studio album, which is due for release in 2014.

In 1985 The Cult enjoyed breakthrough success with the single "She Sells Sanctuary" and the album Love, establishing themselves as a new breed of Alternative rock band. When it came to recording a follow-up, the band booked into The Manor studios in Oxfordshire with Steve Brown again producing the album. The new tracks would become The Cult's third album, re-titled Electric, and a multi-million seller. It wasn't until the limited Rare Cult box set in 2000 that fans got to hear the full album, Peace, correctly sequenced. The box rapidly sold out so Peace has been unavailable for 13 years.

Hidden City is the upcoming tenth studio album by the British rock band The Cult, which will be released on 5 February 2016.It will be the final part of a trilogy that began with Born into This (2007),and the band's first album with bassist Grant Fitzpatrick, making it The Cult's first album since their 1994 self-titled album not to feature Chris Wyse. It also marks the fifth time Bob Rock had produced a Cult album.When you’re an icon like British post-punk outfit The Cult, it’s safe to say that anything goes when releasing material well into the third decade of your existence. The cultish rock group (no pun intended) will release their tenth album, Hidden City, on February 5 to their steadfast group of gothic-rock followers.The first confusing thing about The Cult’s new record strikes you before you even get to track 1; the album cover and title seem like a knockoff of Sleater-Kinney‘s No Cities To Love from last year. It doesn’t exactly get much clearer from there.Hidden City is effectively a 12-track sampler of hard rock, but not the same styles that The Cult has become renown for so carefully cultivating since 1984, although if you listen closely to the chorus of opening track “Dark Energy,” you can certainly hear hints of it. It’s those same hints that make the album worth a spin, if for nothing else than to find some otherworldly rhythms tucked amongst rather basic hard rock songs.The material on Hidden City is a far cry from “She Sells Sanctuary.” Rightfully so, for some part, as that hit is 30 years old and ten albums ago, but we still miss the punchy post-punk sound that The Cult became famous for. The group scrapes together some gothic rock on “Deeply Ordered Chaos” and “Lillies,” both shining moments on the album, and weaves some mysticism into “Sound & Fury,” a gentle intergalactic number, and “In Blood,” a track filled with beat poetry-like lyricism, proving The Cult has still got it, but isn’t as willing to flaunt it as before.Overall, Hidden City would be a much tighter piece if the band cut the fat and fashioned the aforementioned tunes into a deeply ominous and brooding EP. Then again, with an esoteric name like The Cult, maybe this breed of hard rock just isn’t for everyone.

View the album artwork and tracklisting, and hear the new single below.In the distorted guitar track, lead singer Ian Astbury suspiciously points at the community around him as he sings, “No heathens in heaven/ No sweet surrender/ Outsiders forever/ Ghosts of our lives.”Astbury has previously said that walking the grounds of Provinssirock Festival in Finland inspired the subject matter of the upcoming album. “It’s three in the morning, the sun’s up, and there’s all these beautiful people in this halcyon moment,” he said.Astubury continued: “People are laying on the grass, making out, drinking, smoking. There were rows of flowers at the front of the stage from the performances earlier that evening. It was an incredible moment.”The vocalist also discussed how the global pandemic impacted the creative process behind ‘Under The Midnight Sun’. “When the world stopped, I had this moment to write in real time, to calculate,” he said. “I was compelled by this vision, this anomaly, this memory, of being under the midnight sun. [Producer Tom Dalgety] helped us bring a new musical shape and frequency to our process.”
