Bio:

Keel is an American heavy metal band founded in 1984 in Los Angeles, California. They are known for their rock anthem "The Right to Rock." The band was active until 1989, with a brief reunion in 1998. Keel reunited again in 2008 and toured in 2009 for their 25th anniversary.Keel was formed by former Steeler vocalist Ron Keel. The original members were Ron Keel on vocals, former Icon / Schoolboys member David Michael Phillips on guitar, Marc Ferrari on lead & rhythm guitars, Bobby Marks on drums and Kenny Chaisson on bass guitar. Within months, Phillips left to join King Kobra and was replaced by ex-Sexist guitarist Bryan Jay.This was the lineup for their 1984 debut album Lay Down the Law.After the album's release, Marks left and was replaced by Steven Riley, who subsequently left early in the recording of the band's second album to join W.A.S.P., and was in turn replaced by Dwain Miller, forming a lineup which would remain stable for almost 4 years. Their debut album caught the eye of KISS' Gene Simmons, resulting in his production of their second album, The Right To Rock, released on March 26, 1985. Their next and also Simmons-produced third album The Final Frontier was released on April 30, 1986. It included the single "Because the Night", a song that was co-written by Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen and had been a hit for Smith in 1978.In 1986, Keel won the Best Band of the Year award in the 2nd annual Metal Edge magazine reader's poll, beating such noted bands as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. In 1987, the song "Rock & Roll Outlaw" (a cover from the 1978 self titled debut of Australian hard rock band Rose Tattoo) appeared on the soundtrack of the movie Dudes. Their fourth album, Keel, was released on June 21, 1987, recorded with producer Michael Wagener. An unreleased track from the album, Ferrari's "Proud To Be Loud", would eventually wind up on Pantera's Power Metal album, which Ferrari produced early in 1988.Ferrari & Jay both left in 1988, after touring in support of the Keel album. They were replaced by keyboardist Scott Warren, later in Dio, and Baton Rouge guitarist Tony Palmucci.Their fifth album, Larger Than Live, was released in 1989 with six new studio recordings, including a cover of the 1980 Humble Pie song "Fool for a Pretty Face". Also on the album were six live tracks recorded in March 1989. Following the shooting of the music video for the song "Dreams Are Not Enough" on that same year, Ron Keel announced the disbandment of Keel. In the 1990s, Ferrari wrote a gear column for Metal Edge magazine entitled "Power Sources", and went on to form Cold Sweat with among others ex-UFO guitarist Erik Gamans, who would release the album Break Out in 1990. After the demise of that group, Ferrari appeared in both Wayne's World movies (as the guitarist for Tia Carrere's band "Crucial Taunt") and formed the band Medicine Wheel, which released three CDs. In addition, he released two solo CDs and started a music publishing company called MasterSource, employing Ron Keel to write material for the library. Ferrari also recently wrote a book titled Rock Star 101.Bryan Jay and Dwain Miller went from Keel to forming a band called Dogbone, with ex-Riot vocalist Rhett Forrester, bassist Rob Thiessen and vocalist Eddie Salz.In 1998, members of Keel got together to release their sixth album Keel VI: Back in Action. It mainly consisted of unreleased material from their previous albums, including the aforementioned "Proud To Be Loud".The band's song "Speed Demon" (from The Right to Rock) is briefly heard on the 2002 movie Men in Black II, and appears on Mike Varney's U.S. Metal Vol. IV compilation.Ron Keel has pursued numerous musiefore forming the country metal band IronHorse in 2001. In 2006, Ron left IronHorse and formed K2 Featuring Ron Keel a year later. On November 2008, Keel reunited in time to celebrate the band's 25th anniversary. All the members from The Right to Rock era have rejoined except for Chaisson. The new bassist is Ron Keel's longtime friend, Geno Arce. Their first reunion show was held in Hollywood, CA, on January 24, 2009.In addition, the band played at the third annual Rocklahoma festival on July 2009.A reunion album, Streets of Rock & Roll was released in 2010, as well as a 25th anniversary edition of The Right to Rock featuring a brand new re-recorded version of the title song as a bonus track.

Ron Keel (born 1961) is a Hard Rock / Heavy metal vocalist and guitarist for a number of bands from the 1980s to the modern day, including the glam metal band Keel.Ron Keel started his music career with a Tennessee-based band known as Lust. He came to Los Angeles with his band Steeler, which later on featured Yngwie Malmsteen, Rik Fox and Mark Edwards. Steeler became one of many of L.A.'s '80's rock acts who could not withstand the test of time. Malmsteen was the first to leave, opting to play with the band Alcatrazz (featuring Graham Bonnet) before achieving success with his own band. However, Steeler was able to record one self-titled album, released in 1983 on Shrapnel Records. After the demise of Steeler, Ron formed a new band and simply called it Keel. The band secured a record deal with Gold Mountain / A&M Records. From 1984 to 1989, Keel toured the world and sold 2 million records. KISS vocalist/bassist Gene Simmons produced two of Keel's albums: The Right to Rock and The Final Frontier. The band regrouped in 2008 and toured to celebrate their 25th anniversary. In 1990, Ron formed the band "Fair Game", a project Keel fronted with four female backup musicians. Although the band played gigs they never got beyond the demo stage. Two of the songs recorded by the band were featured on the soundtrack to the movie Bad Channels. Their complete recording sessions finally emerged in 2000 on the Metal Mayhem label billed as 'Beauty & The Beast'.Ron returned to the heavy metal music scene in 1997, when he collaborated with Japanese guitarist Akihito Kinoshita on “Project One”, the major label debut album from Kinoshita’s band Saber Tiger. In 2000, Ron formed IronHorse, which mixed country with hard rock. He left the band in 2007 to focus on other aspects of his career. He also performed as part of a Brooks & Dunn tribute band in the Country Superstars Tribute at the Fitz Casino & Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.Prior to reforming Keel, Ron formed a band in 2008 called K2 Featuring Ron Keel, which performed many of the songs throughout his career.Ron currently resides in the Las Vegas, Nevada area. He remains active with Keel and tours with them, but also has a number of musical projects going on in the Vegas Valley. Amongst these are a "Las Vegas Stripped" open mic night (which has been held at various venues around the valley in recent years, often with special guests), and his new country group, the aptly-named Cowboy Band. He also occasionally performs acoustic shows at Joe's Crab Shack restaurants.

Album:

2014 brings to fans Ron Keel‘s new release Metal Cowboy. Much has been said about Ron Keel over the years, from his early days with Steeler, to the big 80’s era of KEEL, and even his country stint; a self-described “return to roots” for Ron.Here I am going to focus on the CD rather than all the back story. If you’d like the whole story though, Ron has a book that is to be released this month, an autobiography entitled Even Keel; Life On The Streets Of Rock N’ Roll. This would be the ideal place to get the facts about the career of Ron Keel if you are so inclined. It is commonly known, in general, metal and country do not mix well. Metal heads typically have quite a bit of disdain for country music and vice versa. That is not to say there is anything wrong with country. In fact, some of the best guitar players out there are country musicians. I am under the impression that a lot of the issues stem from the fact many popular country musicians do not write their own songs. That assumption and the general lack of originality in a lot of country music leads to many writing off the entire genre without giving it a chance. This is always a bad idea.In this case, Ron Keel did in fact write all of the music on this album. In addition to writing, Keel also performed all the vocals, a bulk of the guitar work, both electric and acoustic, as well as playing bass and various other instruments. Definitely a talented guy here! There are also a slew of guest musicians from many prominent bands. The album features drummer Mike Vanderhule (Y&T), Guitarist Frank Hannon (Tesla), and bassist Gene Arco (Keel). Special guests include Ronnie Mancuso (Jake E. Lee’s Red Dragon Cartel, Beggars & Thieves), Paul Shortino (Rough Cutt, King Cobra), and Brent Muscat (Faster Pussycat, Sin City Sinners). There is no shortage of talent here. You can definitely hear the country. Ron’s country styled vocal delivery certainly stands out. Listening to the album, I’m reminded a bit of David Coe, who has collaborated with Dimebag Darrell Abbott (Pantera, Damage Plan) and Vinnie Paul Abbott (Pantera, Damage Plan, Hell Yeah) on the Rebel Meets Rebel CD. There is a certain down and dirty aspect to much of the lyrics. They deal with issues well suited for both rock and country songs.RonKeel-MetalCowboy-AlbumArtWork-backThe album opens with the song Long Gone Bad. This is a high energy rocking song with loud guitars, drums, and killer solos. That on its own sounds very rock and roll. The slide and acoustic guitars combined with the vocals gives it the country feel. But, Ron has found a way to mesh it well together and this song is a good example of a majority of the album. The songs are full of cool guitar parts, hooks, and licks, along with a lot of solo work. Catchy, sing-along choruses with an overall positive feel to them are predominant. Tunes such as What would Skynyrd do? are purely country. Others are more rock than country. Evil Wicked Mean and Nasty is one of the more rocking tunes, with a cool groove and much more heavy playing as well as singing.Metal Cowboy contains eleven songs. Beginning to end, it is well done and well-played; seriously talented musicians spearheaded by the one and only Ron Keel.To me, this is not really metal and country though. Honestly, this is a Southern Rock album. Heavy on the country and light on the rock. I say rock rather than metal, as there really isn’t any heavy metal here. But, it is a good album. Anyone who digs the Southern Rock thing will definitely like it. They did a great job. Hats off to Ron for doing what he truly feels rather than try to live off his past!

Album:

I’ve followed the career of Ron Keel since I dropped some of my paper route money on the Cedar Mall Drug counter in exchange for my cassette copy of The Right To Rock. I was a horrible paper boy. I may have been chronically late but I always packed my Walkman and The Right To Rock was an album that helped me ignore the angry customers shaking their fists as I rolled in with their morning paper just before noon. I first met the man in Nashville last summer. And even 30 plus years later, he was pretty much how I imaged he would be back when I was inexplicably never fired from my paper route. Both literally and figuratively larger than life figure. One thing is certain, no one has ever accused Ron of being an introvert. Even talking with him, you get the sense he feels compelled to entertain you.Well the Metal Cowboy is back. Rolling straight out of the Rock N Roll capitol of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Ron Keel Band is releasing their debut record, Fight Like A Band, on the EMP Label Group on March 1st. If you feel like making a trek to Iowa, I’m guessing you can pick it up a week early at the Release Party on February 23rd at the Grand Falls Casino & Golf Resort in Larchwood, Iowa.Often times, artists feel compelled to recreate past glory and when they do, almost always fall well short of that goal. Sure, I want to hear “The Right To Rock” when I see Ron Keel live, but I don’t want to hear him try to write that song over and over for the next 30 years. Regardless of the artist, I want to hear them grow as much as I want to grow with them. Fight Like A Band delivers on that level. It’s unmistakably a Ron Keel record, but it also light years from the early days of Keel. If The Right To Rock is a young man looking to pick a bar fight, Fight Like A Band is Sam Elliot’s character in Roadhouse. He can still kick your ass if he has to.Fight Like A Band is a record with a lot of color and shape. Tales of coming together to beat the odds and beat cancer (“Fight Like A Band“). Some story songs (“Rock N Roll Guitar”, “Hearts Gone Wild“). “Good Songs, Bad Times” contains a lyric so brilliant and understated it’s hard to believe I haven’t heard it before with the line “Let the bad times rock!”. The first single “Girls Like Me” is catchy as hell. And the album closer is a touching yet fun track called “Hey Man” where we hear Ron sing about the struggle to maintain friendships in his line of work. Also included is a medley of some classic Keel tracks re-recorded with the Ron Keel Band. He wasn’t sure he’d have a full album of music (he was wrong) so he recorded this medley because on the original recordings, in his own words, the singer sucks. Well I’m not sure about that but I am sure my favorite track is the southern rocker “Long Way Down”.Ron Keel and his band knock it out of the park with Fight Like A Band. Ron has assembled an impressive core of musicians and made a record that in my humble (who am I fooling) opinion is more than just a good record. It is at the very least, in the conversation of the best work of Ron Keel’s career. Standout Tracks would be “Fight Like A Band”, “Long Way Down”, “Good Songs Bad Times”, “Hey Man” & “Girls Like Me”. Fight Like A Band drops March 1st.

Album:

Like most rock stars, Ron Keel found his calling in South Dakota. And by most I mean I can’t think of another example. But it’s no joke. Since relocating to the state that gave us Mount Rushmore and the Jackalope, Ron has never sounded more at home. A little over a year from the acclaimed Fight Like A Band album, the Ron Keel Band cement their status as southern rock titans with the release of their latest record South X South Dakota. Even if it’s Southern Dakota.Ron has been embracing his southern rock roots going back a couple of decades to his band Iron Horse. And anyone familiar with his solo record Metal Cowboy and the previously mentioned Fight Like A Band record from the Ron Keel Band, knows Ron isn’t close to slowing down. And if you’ve ever witnessed a Ron Keel Band live show, I don’t need to tell you how good this band from South Dakota is. Backing Ron is longtime bassist Geno “El Diablo” Arce, Dave “DC” Cothern on guitar, Dakota Scott Schmitt on keyboards and Jeff “The Rev” Koller on drums. This band is the real deal. No studio magic and they are tighter than a parking spot in Chicago.Cover albums often come off as a little lazy but this band recording southern rock classics is almost too on point to avoid. Despite his 80’s hair metal background, Ron is more at ease as the Metal Cowboy. From the opening harmonica of the Blackfoot track “Train Train” to the live recording of their CCR medley, South X South Dakota is a showcase of great songs played by a great band. One thing is clear. When you’ve had the career Ron has had, you sort of earn the right to do what you want. It surely sounds like Ron and his band are having fun on this record. In many ways that’s the real sign of success.Standout tracks are .38 Special’s “Rockin Into The Night”, Rossington Collins’ “Don’t Misunderstand Me” (a duet with Jasmine Cain), Atlanta Rhythm Section’s “Homesick” and the lead single, an amazing rendition of the Lynyrd Skynyrd track “Red, White & Blue”. It’s badass that they chose a more recent and deeper track with Skynyrd. In a weird way this record is what we need right now. These songs are like comfort food for your ears. In an uncertain time it feels important we take a moment to reconnect with things that make us smile. And this record does that.

Amongst these are a "Las Vegas Stripped" open mic night (which has been held at various venues around the valley in recent years, often with special guests), and his new country group, the aptly-named Cowboy Band. He also occasionally performs acoustic shows at Joe's Crab Shack restaurants.

Album:

Keel and Ron Keel Band frontman RON KEEL continues to be busy putting out new music. The singer has just released a “Alone At Last – Deluxe Edition“.This is the complete solo acoustic album originally released in 2006 – now fully digitally remastered – and this new edition contains two bonus tracks: an acoustic version of “Singers, Hookers & Thieves” (a duet with Paul Shortino) and a new acoustic mix of “Just Like Tennessee.” While Ron has released many of the songs as standalone singles over the last year, the full album is being available on all platforms this week.Ron puts a lot of emotion on these songs, being my favorites the new versions of his ’80s bands Steeler and Keel. The new acoustic take on ‘Serenade’ is fantastic, confirming that a good song is always a good song, electric or acoustic.“Alone At Last” is one of Ron Keel’s career highlights. The album features new acoustic versions of Ron Keel classics previously recorded by Steeler, Keel, IronHorse, Fair Game, Saber Tiger, and Ronnie Lee Keel – and the song “Hillbilly Heavy Metal Rock N Roll Soul” originally written for this release. If I’m to choose my favorite song, I strongly feel Ron lets it all pour out from his soul on ‘Dreams Are Not Enough’, a captivating vocal performance it is.Other highlights include “Time of my Life”, “Last Call”, “What’s left of Me”, and of course 80s Keel ‘Calm Before The Storm’, and Steeler ‘Serenade’.If rock and roll is about rebellion, then Ron Keel is rock and roll to the core because he’s rebelled against everyone and everything that ever tried to put a fence around him or his music. Great Stuff.
