Bio:

Black Star Riders is a rock band formed in December 2012, when members of the most recent line-up of Thin Lizzy decided to record new material, but chose not to release it under the Thin Lizzy name. While Thin Lizzy will continue on an occasional basis, Black Star Riders will be a full-time band, described as "the next step in the evolution of the Thin Lizzy story".The band's first album, All Hell Breaks Loose, was released on 21 May 2013, and the follow-up album, The Killer Instinct is scheduled for release in February 2015.In May 2010, Thin Lizzy lead guitarist Scott Gorham announced the latest incarnation of the group, which had toured sporadically with various line-ups since 1996, after the death of band leader Phil Lynott in 1986. This marked the return of the original drummer Brian Downey and longtime keyboard player Darren Wharton, joining Gorham, bass guitarist Marco Mendoza, and vocalist and occasional guitarist Ricky Warwick. The other lead guitarist role was initially filled by Vivian Campbell, then by Richard Fortus, before Damon Johnson joined the band in August 2011. As the band toured throughout 2011 and 2012, they composed new material for possible release as a Thin Lizzy studio album, and demos were recorded in June 2012.In October 2012, it was announced that the new material would not be recorded under the Thin Lizzy name, and that a new band name would be used for the new songs. According to Gorham, this was "out of respect to Phil Lynott and the legacy he created", though he confirmed that the new material would feature the classic Thin Lizzy sound. He later confirmed that the decision was taken by himself and Downey, with the support of the other members of the band, and that the Thin Lizzy estate (controlled by Lynott's widow Caroline) had also been uncomfortable about new Thin Lizzy studio recordings. Warwick has acknowledged that a significant portion of Thin Lizzy fans were also against the idea of Thin Lizzy studio recordings without Lynott. He later confirmed that he had been troubled by the idea of using the Thin Lizzy name, and that as a fan, had the band recorded an album under the Thin Lizzy name with another singer, he would have been against it.As the new material was being written, it became clear that Downey and Wharton would not be involved when the final recordings were made. Downey required a break from the heavy touring schedule, and Wharton wanted to return to his own band Dare, and to work on a film project.Warwick confirmed, "Brian and Darren just don't want to be on the road 150 days a year, and that's completely understandable. But we do."Gorham has stated that Thin Lizzy will still perform as a band in the future: "Thin Lizzy isn't gonna die," he said. With reference to the much-publicised Lizzy "farewell" tour in late 2012, Warwick confirmed, "All that 'farewell' meant is that we're not going to do 150 Lizzy shows a year... those were just the last shows for a while."Thin Lizzy completed a short tour of Australia in March 2013, with Downey and Wharton as part of the line-up.Damon Johnson has revealed that Gorham was against any name for the new band that was related to Thin Lizzy, "because this band has to stand on its own".Warwick named the band after a gang of outlaws in the 1993 western film Tombstone, and the new name was announced on 20 December 2012.The band initially consisted of Gorham and Johnson on lead guitar, Mendoza on bass guitar, with Warwick acting as vocalist and occasional guitarist. The band's drummer is Jimmy DeGrasso, but no keyboard player has been recruited, with Gorham stating, "I don't think we are actually going to have keyboards in Black Star Riders. You never know what's going to happen down the road but that is the set-up right now with that.".All members are American with the exception of Warwick who is from Northern Ireland. Each founding member had previously achieved success with other acts – Gorham with all incarnations of Thin Lizzy since 1974 and with 21 Guns; Warwick with The Almighty; Johnson with his own band Brother Cane, and with Alice Cooper; Mendoza with Blue Murder, fronted by another ex-Thin Lizzy member, John Sykes; and DeGrasso with several acts including Megadeth, Suicidal Tendencies, White Lion and Alice Cooper. Gorham is the only member of Black Star Riders to have been a member of Thin Lizzy while Phil Lynott led the band and thus the only one to have appeared on a Thin Lizzy studio album.

Album:

All Hell Breaks Loose is the debut studio album by hard rock band Black Star Riders, released in May 2013. Black Star Riders evolved from the touring version of Thin Lizzy, assembled by guitarist Scott Gorham after the death of Thin Lizzy's leader Phil Lynott.Had the members of BLACK STAR RIDERS, who essentially comprise the modern touring lineup of THIN LIZZY, actually dared to release this new album of original material - which bears the fittingly sardonic title "All Hell Breaks Loose" - under the latter band's hallowed moniker, it's fair to assume that all hell would have broken loose, indeed.Bottom line: no matter how great its songs might be, the album would have been hopelessly eclipsed by the historical baggage of THIN LIZZY's past glories, not to mention the glaring absence of its long-since deceased leader and de facto "face," Philip Lynott. So no matter what they lose in terms of name recognition, guitarists Scott Gorham and Damon Johnson, vocalist/guitarist Ricky Warwick, bassist Marco Mendoza and drummer Jimmy DeGrasso, will ultimately be glad they resisted messing with sanctified brand names AND the venerated dead with this brand new set of classic hard rock tunes.Heck, such is the weight removed from BLACK STAR RIDERS' collective shoulders that they can even cast a conspiratorial wink at Lynott's ghost via the opening title cut's allusion to "wearing dead man's shoes," before getting on with the business at hand. All that being said, the sonic hallmarks of LIZZY inevitably crop up, now and then - and never more so than when twin guitars harmonize on the eerily precise tribute of "Bound for Glory", the cleverly worded "Hey Judas", and even the uncommonly bouncy "Someday Salvation" ("Dancing in the Moonlight" redux) - all of which were clearly written with that proposed "next" TL album in mind.Ditto the Celtic folk melodies dominating "Kingdom of the Lost", which clearly emanate from LIZZY's "Black Rose" days, though the song probably shares more in common with Gary Moore's similarly patriotic work of the late 1980s (think the "Wild Frontier" and "After the War" LPs), if you really want to be nitpicky. Either way, it's a well-conceived, emotional tune.Luckily, the LIZZY ingredients just as often fade into the background, allowing songs like "Bloodshot", "Kissin' the Ground", the mildly funky "Hoodoo Voodoo", and the hard-driving "Valley of the Stones" (parts of which hark back to Warwick's old band, THE ALMIGHTY), to be released from further suspicion (as well as unfair expectations) upon their own recognizance. In sum, there's undoubtedly quite a bit of "to Phil or not to Phil" going on across "All Hell Breaks Loose", since those involved were clearly torn, at times, between striking out on their own or playing up to the role model demanded by what might have been could a - GULP! - new THIN LIZZY album. But if one can listen to the album through the unbiased prism of timeless classic rock that the members of BLACK STAR RIDERS are clearly extremely qualified to explore (not least Gorham, who contributed so much to its very architecture three decades ago), there's lots of high quality hard rock to be enjoyed here.

Album:

The Killer Instinct is the upcoming second studio album by hard rock band Black Star Riders, scheduled for release in February 2015. Black Star Riders evolved from the touring version of Thin Lizzy, assembled by guitarist Scott Gorham after the death of Thin Lizzy's leader Phil Lynott. The band's first album, All Hell Breaks Loose, was released in 2013.Recording for the band's follow-up to All Hell Breaks Loose was first announced during late 2013, and on 27 January 2014, it was announced the band's second album would be recorded in Dublin in October, and would be produced by Def Leppard vocalist Joe Elliott. Elliott had previously worked on vocalist Ricky Warwick's solo albums, and also with Scott Gorham on archival Thin Lizzy releases. However, Elliott pulled out of the project in August 2014 due to conflicts with Def Leppard's schedule. He was quickly replaced by Nick Raskulinecz, and recording took place in Nashville, Tennessee in September. The Killer Instinct will be the first Black Star Riders album to feature former Ratt and Lynch Mob bass guitarist Robbie Crane, who replaced founder member Marco Mendoza in June 2014.When the album title was announced on 21 November 2014, Warwick explained the name: "Life's not fair. Never has been, never will be. Sometimes you have to live with a killer instinct just to survive in the pursuit of happiness. Nobody can do for you what you should be doing for yourself." Guitarist Damon Johnson praised the album's producer Nick Raskulinecz, stating, "He patiently walked through the full song list with the entire band, and made sure we focused on the material to best represent Black Star Riders in 2015.The first single from the album was the title track, which received its first airplay on 15 December 2014, on Ken Bruce's mid-morning show on BBC Radio 2 in the UK. On the same day, a lyric video was released, and the single was released the following day.

Album:

Nuclear Blast are pleased to announce the release of Black Star Riders' third studio album, "Heavy Fire", on 3rd February 2017. The band will support the album with a full UK and Ireland tour in March 2017. The band's previous album, "The Killer Instinct", was released in 2015 to widespread critical acclaim and went on to score multiple radio playlists. A solid year of worldwide touring culminated in December 2015 in a UK arena tour alongside Def Leppard and Whitesnake. 2016 saw the band return to the studio with The Killer Instinct''s producer Nick Raskulinecz at his studio just outside Nashville. The resultant album is BSR' most accomplished work to date. From the immediate riffs of album opener "Heavy Fire" to the instant hooks of first single "When The Night Comes In", from the dirty bass groove of "Thinking About You Could Get Me Killed" to the familiar and trademark dual guitars of Gorham and Johnson on "Testify Or Say Goodbye", this is an album that will further cement BSR' reputation as one of the world's premiere rock acts. "Angst, passion, power, glory, love, truth, lies, loyalty, questions that begged to be answered. There's a guitar army coming … and it's bringing the Heavy Fire!" – Ricky Warwick (vocals) "Not many new bands get to record three albums these days. Without doubt this is BSR's best album so far. We had a great time recording it and can't wait to play the new songs live on tour in March." – Scott Gorham (guitars) Following on from their critically acclaimed albums "All Hell Breaks Loose" and "The Killer Instinct", which have paved the way for BSR to be recognized as a power force in the modern day of rock, "Heavy Fire" will be once again released by Nuclear Blast. The band have also brought in Pledge Music, one of the most innovative and successful platforms of the modern music world, to give fans extra special product and experiences to go along with the album’s release.

Album:

“Another State Of Grace” is the fourth studio album by American rockers BLACK STAR RIDERS. I expect that any band who has put out three quite exceptional slabs of hard rock is always under pressure to come up with the goods and edge that last release to keep the fire burning and the fan base growing, but this fourth outing has another feel altogether – it’s an album that at once seems effortless, comfortable and one which is destined to become a classic. It can’t be easy being Black Star Riders. On the one hand, most sane people were delighted when an acceptable incarnation of THIN LIZZY mutated into its own entity and started to make records that complemented, rather than added to, the legacy of guitarist Scott Gorham’s legendary former band.On the other, the task of persuading people that the band can stand apart from the Lizzy catalogue and still rally the troops was never going to be an easy one. That this multinational crew have reached their fourth album with credibility and momentum intact speaks volumes about the spirit behind the whole thing. The joy of this ongoing collaboration has long been how natural, unpretentious and honest it all sounds, and “Another State Of Grace” could hardly be any more at ease with its place in the world. After listening to opening track “Tonight The Moonlight Let Me Down”, which does evoke some of the most melodic and memorable moments of Thin Lizzy’s back catalogue, especially when that sax kicks in, you know you have hit on something rather special. There is definitely a grittiness and rugged swagger to the sound of this new album that instantly makes it more engaging than its predecessors.Vocalist Ricky Warwick is still doing the world’s best Phil Lynott impression, of course (and no, he didn’t sound like that when he was fronting The Almighty), but he delivers every line with such conviction and gruff charm that it’s hard not to wonder exactly what anyone could complain about. In the absence of the real Thin Lizzy, for reasons that should be abundantly clear, this is still as close as we’re going to get.The even better news is that the majority of these songs are good enough to take the weight. The build and Celtic drum-fueled thrust of title track “Another State of Grace” is quite exceptional. It’s a hard rocker which sits wonderfully well in a long tradition of songs that old Lizzy fans will be well familiar with. Indeed it’s that classic sound that feels so real here on this collection, like the patina of time has sat on these songs for years. Now that, believe me is a real art.“Ain’t The End Of The World” is a balls-out rocker, Gorham’s euphoric presence underpinning Warwick’s fiery vocal. A highlight with a great hook, wonderful guitars: it has it all. It’s backed by another great – ‘Underneath the Afterglow’ has a harder edge that will bring a smile to your face, riff driven and rocking it was the last song written for the album with music composed by Gorham and nephew Jesse Siebenberg (son of former Supertramp drummer Bob) with a gem of a lyric by Warwick.“Underneath The Afterglow” is darker and gnarlier, metallic shades adding muscle to a blissfully restrained melody, while “Soldier In The Ghetto” is lithe power-pop with rippling Hammonds, very classic rock at its core.“Standing In The Line Of Fire” is another high-energy rocker with a wonderfully screaming solo from Gorham. It really rocks.“What Will it Take” is yet another pointer that Black Star Riders are reveling in not being considered merely an offshoot of Thin Lizzy but are a real band in their own right. This is a song that should underline that to those late to that conclusion as it dips it’s toes in what some might see as Americana. It’s quite possibly the most enigmatic song here as interestingly it still sports all of the traditional elements like the twin guitar attack, but it’s done via a completely new set of eyes. It also features a shared lead vocal as Warwick teams up with Pearl Aday. The album close with a pair of winners: “In the Shadow of the War Machine” is another interesting slant on the straight hard rock side, though rock it does, and ending with and the roots rock strut of “Poisoned Heart” – which has a beating heart made to fill stadiums – the Black Star Riders fourth trip down the rock ‘n’ roll highway is easily their best yet.“Another State Of Grace” was recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Jay Ruston, who mixed ‘The Killer Instinct’ and ‘Heavy Fire’ and it sounds great. The result is in my opinion very much the most consistent and complete Black Star Riders so far.We might all secretly want them to keep playing tons of Thin Lizzy songs live, but their own material has more than enough charm, class and power of its own.One of the best Classic Rock albums of the year so far, and a serious contender for the big prize.

Album:

Masters of anthemic rock 'n' roll Black Star Riders are proud to announce that their new album, entitled "Wrong Side Of Paradise", will be released by Earache Records. The album, featuring 11 tracks, was recorded in the autumn of 2021 at Studio 606 in Northridge California and Toochtoon Sound in Redmond, Oregon with producer and long-time BSR associate, Jay Ruston. In an era with an abundance of sub genres with every mood and emotion catered for from Doom to Stoner to Sludge to Death to Black to Progressive to Symphonic and everything else in between, isn’t in nice that sometimes there are new releases playing straight down the middle with a verse, chorus, verse, chorus, guitar solo, chorus structure allowing the listener to kick back, crack open a beer, vino, sparkling spring water and relax without having to concentrate too hard!! 10 years into their career as The Black Star Riders, “Wrong Side of Paradise” blasts forth from your speakers / headphones in a refreshing, purely straight ahead bluesy Heavy Rock way.Opener and title track “Wrong Side of Paradise” opens with Lizzy tinged riffage that immediately sets out the next hour for any uninitiated, letting them know what’s in store. As some heavily made up and moused chaps from LA once said, “Nothing But A Good Time”.The clap along chorus in “Better Than Saturday Night” and the whole vibe of the song surely consigns it to future classic status and a mainstay of future BSR setlists. As should “Don’t Let The World (Get in The Way)” and the excellent “Green and Troubled Land”.Guitars are nice and clear in the mix with imaginative riffage showing full well that Ricky and the boys aren’t going through the motions. The dualling lead guitars, so reminiscent of Thin Lizzy and early BSR, perhaps deliberately dialled back to a degree emphasising the first BSR album without Scott Gorham. Gritty, street wise feels in a classic rock way but also inspired, don’t come here if you are looking for old ground being rehashed. With the previous Irish Traditional influences also dialled back somewhat, on this the first BSR album for new label Earache Records, it’s refreshing to hear the conscious effort to stamp BSR’s own identity on proceedings.Ricky Warwick’s voice often reminding of Philo but also reminiscent of by-gone days listening to The Almighty for those of us old enough to remember buying albums before the internet. The tempo slows ever so slightly for “Riding Out The Storm” and note the namecheck to Ricky’s old stomping grounds of Belfast and Glasgow in “Pay Dirt”. “This Life Will Be The Death of Me” is a fine way to close the album with some rather tasty lead guitar work, and a melody that stays in the head long after the song and album has finished. This is a no bullshit, straight ahead Heavy Rock album, one that will sit well in any record collection. Do yourself a favour and add it to yours.
