The son of actor Selar Sabu, vocalist and guitarist Paul Sabu (b. Burbank, California, USA) has carved out a successful career as a songwriter, producer/engineer and guitarist for a variety of major acts. He has also contributed to numerous film soundtracks, but his solo projects have been dogged by bad luck. The Sabu band, featuring bass player Rick Bozzo and drummer Dan Holmes, found some success with their soulful hard rock debut, but the album made no impression in America because Sabu also released a disco album at the same time on the Ocean label. Sabu turned to studio work, putting his band on ice until Motown subsidiary Morocco offered him a contract. As Kidd Glove, the band adopted a harder style, showcasing Sabu’s vocals (reminiscent of a smokier Sammy Hagar) and guitar work. However, the album did not take off, and when Morocco folded the band followed. Sabu was joined by Bozzo, Dan Ellis (keyboards) and Charles Esposito (drums) for the critically acclaimed Heartbreak, which did well until the label went into liquidation, and Sabu supported himself with an Arista songwriting contract while he put together his next project, Only Child. Sabu finally released a new solo album after a decade’s wait in 1995, collaborating with ex-Baton Rouge guitarist Lance Boulen among others. The record was credited to Paul Sabu, and reawakened interest in an artist considered by many to be a unique guitar talent.

Album:

1998 album from the AOR singer, songwriter and producer. With an impeccable production, this album would prove over time to be one of the '90s lost treasures. When Grunge had swept all before it, only a select few were carrying the flag for melodic Hard Rock in '98. If anything, Sabu has proven to be one of rocks survivors. No matter what Seattle had thrown at the world at the turn of the nineties, here was a man that was ready to buck the trend and stand or fall by what he believed in. Thanks to that energized album from '96, the blueprint was firmly in place and Sabu saw no reason to change it. The opening couplet of 'Spitfire' and 'Let a Sleeping Dog Lie' were full of the usual bombast and self-belief that we had come to expect, whilst 'Bring US Love' was a synth heavy throwback to the 'Heartbreak' and Kidd Glove eras. The glorious anthemic strains of 'If I'd Never Asked You to Dance', a real lighters-in-the- air moment, pushes the saccharine quota high, but the surging 'Til Your Hearts Calm' is a pure rush of adrenaline that will make sure your heart is anything but calm.Track 9 is a Stevie Wonder cover (publisher mis-spelled in the booklet as "Joe Bet Music").

Just in case you have forgotten; Sabu has produced, mixed, written songs and performed with such artists as Alice Cooper, David Bowie, Little Caesar, Lee Aaron, Shania Twain, John Waite, WASP, Nelson and even Madonna.Perhaps his most celebrated album, “Heartbreak“, has just been ‘remastered & reloaded‘ by Rock Candy Records. And ‘reloaded’ indeed… this reissue includes no less than 9 bonus tracks.Paul Sabu shined as solo artist and with his own projects Kidd Glove and Only Child. Rock Candy remastered & reloaded release – for the first time on CD – of Paul SABU‘s first rock album, 1980’s “Sabu“, including five bonus tracks, previously unreleased material from the same sessions.The name Paul Sabu is held in incredibly high esteem amongst rock fans. His musical output has consistently attracted praise – the quality of songwriting, singing and performance securing him a star in the AOR/melodic rock scene that continues to burn brightly.However, his first foray into the music business actually commenced in the late ‘70s, producing a succession of successful disco records for a number of artists.He was quickly offered a solo deal and released a self-titled, but band-orientated, rock/disco hybrid under the Sabu handle, which had little commercial impact.After going back to the drawing board he was the offered an album deal with the giant MCA label, who were backing his plans to record a rock record. The result was another full band project issued, once again, with the album title ‘Sabu’, but this time the music was full-on melodic hard rock.MCA objected to a number of recorded songs and stripped a few tracks off the final release – making it a six song record of just 30 minutes duration. Clearly this was a blow for Paul, but the quality of the remaining songs was undeniable.Produced by Paul himself, the results are spectacular.Opening track ‘Rock Me Slowly’ has the feel and swagger of an all-time classic rock track, with sweeping chords and terrific vocals that wouldn’t be out of place on a Sammy Hagar record. And it only gets better.Tracks such as ‘Wet And Wild’, ‘Turn Back’ and ‘Streetheart’ pack a massive punch. But it’s the addition of several blistering bonus tracks to this re-issue, original lost material, that will excite Paul Sabu followers most.Funnily enough, among the bonus tracks, ‘Skintight’ found its place in the soundtrack of a porno movie of the ’80s, but all these extra songs are being released for the first time on this CD.

Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to announce the signing of Sabu to the label and the subsequent release of a new album, "Banshee". Sabu is the namesake of singer, guitarist & producer Paul Sabu, whose outstanding contributions to the genre over the past three decades have made him a legendary figure in the world of AOR. This will be the first Sabu album since 1998's "Between The Light" and the sixth Sabu album overall. "Banshee" was created in collaboration with Barry Sparks (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Schenker Group, UFO, Dokken and Ted Nugent), who, along with Paul, provides all the instrumentation on the album, as well as background vocals. Fans who are familiar with Sabu's work will find that the sound and vibe of "Banshee" is in line with Paul's classic releases under the band moniker Only Child. So, needless to say, something for AOR aficionados to truly look forward to.Paul Sabu is a rock legend. For over 30 years he has done it all, from singer and songwriter to coveted guitarist, producer and recording engineer. He has created smash hits, chart-topping albums and an arsenal of top artists and his numerous awards and accomplishments make him one of the most influential and best selling artists in AOR history. Sabu's career is what dreams are made of. He got his break at only 22, when the young singer/songwriter auditioned and beat out hundreds of rock artists to become Motown Records' official rock dude. He immediately got to work recording the classic self-titled Kidd Glove album, released to great anticipation and success in 1984 with the Motown-owned Morocco label. From there, history was made; he reformed his own band Sabu in 1985 to release the outstanding "Heartbreak" album, which included the hit single "Angeline" and helped him realize his talent as a recording and mixing engineer. Producing his own music, Sabu soon created a new band, AOR gods and rock superstars Only Child, which found huge success with their 1988 self-titled album released through Capitol Records, and widely considered to be Sabu's best and one of the top AOR albums of all time. Only Child later reformed and took back the old name, Sabu. The new material was much heavier and rougher than Sabu's past hits, evolving with musical sounds and finding new legions of fans with the self-titled album (1996) and "Between The Light" (1998). Along with "Strange Messiah" (2007) and "Bangkok Rules" (2012), these albums showcase big sounds, lots of depth, blistering guitars and out-of-this-world vocals. Sabu's music is easily recognizable and shows why he is considered an AOR god. As he continued to work on his own music, Sabu also became a sought-after producer and engineer. Over the past quarter-century Sabu has worked with such artists as David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Little Caesar, Sheena Easton, Glass Tiger, Lee Aaron, Little America, Madonna, Malice, Motels, Robbie Neville, Only Child, Silent Rage, The Nelsons, Shania Twain, John Waite, Fatal Smile and many more.
