Bio:

Slave Raider was an American Hard rock band formed in 1985 that was known for its over-the-top antics, heavy make-up and glam song lyrics. In the 1980s, the Minneapolis music scene was primarily known for The Replacements, Soul Asylum, Hüsker Dü and Prince among others. In the Twin Cities, Slave Raider had a sizeable following that were known as "The Raid". They opened for such 1980s bands as Ratt and Poison with the original lineup. The band recorded three albums in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but were never able to make much of a dent in the glam metal scene of the time due to the beginning of the grunge movement that has been attributed to the influence of their fellow Minnesotans, The Replacements. The band was dropped by its record label following their third album release in 1990 and broke up soon after that with the band members going on to solo projects. The original line up has periodically reunited since then to perform the occasional reunion show that is always "standing room only".The song "Youngblood", written by Slave Raider members and performed by Slave Raider, appeared in the 1994 movie entitled The Paper, which was nominated for an Oscar.Slave Raider's "Make Some Noise" (written by Slave Raider and D. Nagel) appeared in 1988's License to Drive.

Album:

For Hard Rock fans and collectors, having the two major-label SLAVE RAIDER albums on CD has been akin to finding the Holy Grail. Since neither offering from the costumed Minnesotans sold a lick on CD, finding a copy would typically cost a small fortune. Now, after almost 30 years since Slave Raider's debut was released, you can get both albums freshly remastered courtesy of the sage pop metal purveyors at Divebomb Records. The first Slave Raider album Take the World By Storm is a really good one, but my favorite always was their more ambitious 2nd CD "What Do You Know About Rock 'N Roll?".Like Kix on the East Coast and Y&T in Northern California, Slave Raider’s core fan base was in the Twin Cities, and thus, their over-the-top image was easily drowned out by more popular national acts like Twisted Sister, WASP or Lizzy Borden, despite their sound & style took a lot of those same cues as well. For "What Do You Know About Rock 'N Roll?" Slave Raider got famed producer Chris Tsangarides (TNT, Gary Moore, Thin Lizzy, Yngwie Malmsteen) who helped them add a more melodic polish to their sound. You hear that especially in the opening tracks “Is There Rock N' Roll In Heaven?” and "Youngblood” the latter of which got some decent radio play and rotation at MTV Headbanger's Ball. They also made the second half of the album some kind of concept about a dystopian future where Rock music is a crime, ending the CD with one of the best versions of Thin Lizzy’s “Jailbreak” you'll ever hear.Originally released in 1988, "What Do You Know About Rock 'N Roll?" was one of the best US Hard Rock albums of the year, sadly pretty ignored due to the poor promotion provided by RCA/Jive Records. The term 'cult classic' gets tossed around pretty freely, but in Slave Raider’s case it is completely appropriate. Here’s a band that had a wild look, an even wilder sound, and that went beyond the normal party rock clichés."What Do You Know About Rock 'N Roll?" is quite unknown for many Hard Rock fans, not strange as the album never was reissued and with copies being sold for over $200.Now you have the opportunity to discover a band that should have been huge with this excellent Divebomb Records remastered reissue including expanded artwork.

Album:

Last year we presented here the freshly remastered second album by SLAVE RAIDER, now it’s time for their debut “Take The World By Storm“.For Hard Rock fans and collectors having the two Slave Raider albums on CD has been akin to finding the Holy Grail, with original copies being sold for over $200. Now you can get both albums freshly remastered courtesy of the sage pop metal purveyors at Divebomb Records.“Take The World By Storm” is the debut by Slave Raider released independently in 1986. When the band got signed by Jive Records for the second album the label decided to remix this one and re-release it. The job was handled by Chris Tsangarides (TNT, Gary Moore, Thin Lizzy, Yngwie Malmsteen) who helped to add a more polished sound. This remastered reissue takes the remixed version, where the track ‘Make Some Noise’ was cut by around a minute and ‘The Black Hole’ has a longer introduction. The term “cult classic” gets tossed around pretty freely, but in Slave Raider’s case it is completely appropriate. Here’s a band that had a wild look, an even wilder sound, and that went beyond the normal hair metal clichés, yet outside of the Twin Cities area (Minneapolis), they just didn’t make a huge impact.Slave Raider’s look and attitude owed a lot to bands like Twisted Sister, early Motley Crue, WASP and Lizzy Borden, and their sound had a lot of those same cues as well. They took the basic Melodic Hard Rock formula and gave it certain edge and a flamboyant sense of style. The catchy hooks and Chainsaw Caine’s raspy vocals are what stand out the most initially, but the guitar crunch is what get heads banging.Slave Raider does not mess around here. “Take The World By Storm” gets right to rocking, and keeps that up one anthem after another until the very end.Caine has a huge presence as a frontman. He gets right in your face with his raspy, boisterous vocals, and is the perfect balance to the rowdy guitar licks Nikki Wikkid and Lance Sabin were laying down. There are only eight songs on the album, and they’re all straight-up rockers. ‘Make Some Noise’, ‘Survival of the Fittest’ and the party-ready title track are highlights, but the whole album is a lot of fun.In the end, Slave Raider didn’t exactly take the world by storm, but they were still one of the era’s most interesting and entertaining Hard Rock / Glam Metal acts.Being originally an independent recording, the sound in “Take The World By Storm” is really good save for some cymbal flaws, but Tsangarides’ remix and this fresh remaster things got improved a lot.If you like your ‘80s US Rock loud, catchy and over the top, this is a band you really need to discover, especially now that their early albums are once again in print thanks to reissue specialists at Divebomb Records.

Line Up:

Album:

When the world was awash with Glam/Shock Rock bands, another band from Minneapolis decided to join the circus. Formed in the year 1985, the band was known for its "heavy make-up, over-the-top antics and glam lyrics"! SLAVE RAIDER recorded and released three albums in the 80's, " Take The World By Storm" in 1986, "What Do You know About Rock 'N Roll" in 1988, and "Bigger Badder and Bolder" in 1990 before calling it quits. The band has opened for Glam bands like RATT and POISON. As with every other band that sounded like every other band at that time, they were wiped out by the arrival of Grunge. The band members went about their way on to solo careers and other personal pursuits. DiveBomb Records re-released the first two albums in 2015, and in the year 2016, the re-released, "Bigger Badder and Bolder", with two bonus tracks."Bigger, Badder & Bolder", the title track and the first track of the album, is a good example of the lyrical content of the songs of that era. It’s a song for the "rebel from the wrong side of the track". The track urges you to be bigger, badder and bolder during its course and also includes threatening people if they have a problem with the band, is what I am assuming! It also includes a blink-and-you-miss-it funky bass melody in its midst."D.O.A (Dead On arrival)", starts off like a ballad with wailing guitar sound and is about "Johnny" and his friends out about town drinking and they have an unfortunate accident. It has the usual suspects of an 80's song; high pitched backing vocals and a mournful guitar solo.Who Owns America" has a bit of the American national anthem in the beginning and is a rant about all things messed up in the U.S. It was probably written as an arena song with hopes that the crowds will sing along chanting the chorus. One of the bonus tracks in the album is "Win Twins Win", which is actual reworking of "TNT" by AC/DC. The band has “cleverly” redone the words but has retained the melody as a tribute to the Minnesota Twins, an American Baseball Team.Listening to the album, I was transported into the world of spandex, puffed up hair, and androgynous dudes singing songs of debauchery and hedonism. Except that world has long since moved on from that a long time ago. It is painfully obvious that there are still fans out there for this kind of music, which is why DiveBomb Records has gone out on a limb and re-issued the band's whole catalogue. However, it is a mystery to me who would really buy the album, other than die hard fans of the band, and maybe local friends of the band. Back in the 80's the band had a sizeable following and named themselves, "The Raid". The music and lyrics is quite competent but it’s hard to find anything original about the songs. The vocalist tries hard to sound like David Coverdale and the band like WHITESNAKE, but they don't quite hit the mark. Give this album a listen only if you re stuck in the 80's and can’t get enough of the Glam/Hair scene.
