Bio:

Jackyl is an American hard rock band formed in 1991.It’s been nearly 20 years since Jackyl shot out of Georgia with its wild, untamed and uncouth approach to rock ‘n’ roll. Equal parts hard rock, heavy metal and Southern rock, Jackyl formed in 1991 and brought back rock ‘n’ roll back — back to its down-to-earth, wild, fun-loving origins. Full of spit and swagger — and a “dirty” sense of humor to boot — Jackyl quickly earned a deal with Geffen Records. Jackyl’s live shows were already legendary before the ink dried on the Geffen contract. The 1992 self-titled debut album went platinum and featured notable rock radio hits like “Down On Me,” “When Will It Rain,” “I Stand Alone” and, most notably, “The Lumberjack,” during which vocalist Jesse James Dupree performed a chain-saw solo. Dupree’s chain-saw escapades on album and in concert became one of many Jackyl trademarks. With the release of ‘Jackyl’ hit the road and barely left it since. Just long enough to record new albums. Touring mates in those early days included Aerosmith, Kiss, ZZ Top, Ted Nugent and Damn Yankees. 1993 saw “Mental *@%.!” featured on ‘The Beavis & Butt-head Experience,’ a compilation album of songs tied in with MTV’s hit cartoon series; it was eventually certified triple platinum. 1994 was one of the most important years in the band’s career. The second album, ‘Push Comes To Shove,’ hit the streets and went gold. That August, Jackyl turned in one of the most acclaimed performances at Woodstock ’94 in Saugerties, NY, and the resulting double album ‘Woodstock 94’ went platinum and included “Headed For Destruction” (a track from ‘Push Comes To Shove’). The live recording ‘Night Of The Living Dead’ was released exclusively in Europe on Mayhem Records in 1996.It wasn’t long before Jackyl followed A&R legend John Kalodner (who had signed them to Geffen) to Sony Music’s imprint Epic Records. ‘Cut the Crap’ was released in 1997 and benefited from two industry heavyweights overseeing its recording: producer Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Metallica) and mixer Kevin Shirley (silverchair, Aerosmith). This album spawned the rock radio hit “Locked and Loaded,” which included guest vocals by AC/DC’s Brian Johnson. It was the first time Johnson had ever recorded with any artist but AC/DC since he joined the band 17 years earlier. A collection of B-sides titled ‘Stayin’ Alive’ appeared on Shimmering Tone Records in 1998 but the biggest highlight of the year was Geffen’s release of the best-of collection ‘Choice Cuts’ and the related promotional events Jackyl did to help promote it.The band earned two Guinness Book of World Records citations and the designation “The Hardest Working Band in Rock ‘N’ Roll” for performing 100 shows in 50 days as well as 21 shows in 24 hours. Dupree says the most grueling of the two was 21 shows in 24 hours; Jackyl completed that task in Texas, and the shows were all done with full lights and sound. The daytime sets were 45 minutes long whereas the ones done at nighttime were between 90 and 120 minutes long. Jackyl released ‘Relentless’ on Humidity Records in 2002. It contained the second collaboration with Brian Johnson, “Kill the Sunshine.” Universal Music/Geffen Records also issued a Jackyl volume as part of its acclaimed ’20th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection’ best-of series in 2003. For a band that built its reputation as road warriors, it’s surprising that a full-length live album meant for worldwide release did not appear until 2004 with the separate release of the ‘Live at the Full Throttle Saloon’ CD and DVD on Sanctuary Records. ‘Live at the Full Throttle Saloon’ was recorded and filmed in summer 2003 in Sturgis, South Dakota, as part of the legendary annual biker rally festivities held there. In 2010, the band completed their release titled “My Moonshine Kicks Your Cocaine’s Ass”. Staying true to their working band roots, ever since 2008 Jackyl has been on the road playing the summer festival circuit as well as many other choice, off-season venues.

Album:

Rowyco is the eighth studio album by American southern rock band Jackyl. Scheduled for release on 5 August 2016, the album will be published via Mighty Loud Records.JACKYL will release its new album, "Rowyco", on August 5 via Mighty Loud Records. "Rowyco" is said to be the fattest-sounding record to date for the band."This will be an exciting year," predicts lead singer Jesse James Dupree. "With the album's release timing perfectly with the grand opening of the Full Throttle Saloon, in Sturgis, South Dakota. The original location burned to the ground last year AND they are building back bigger and better than ever."The Full Throttle Saloon enjoyed a six-year run of a hit reality television show of the same name, which documented owner Michael Ballard and Jesse's struggles to get the bar up, running and profitable during the world's largest motorcycle rally. The first single off "Rowyco", titled "Rally", is the perfect song to kick off summer, as it's time to rally for rock!"There is not a better song than 'Rally' to set the pace for an incredible summer 2016," exclaims Jesse. "So crank that bitch up!"And as far as the album as a whole, Jesse states: "It's a JACKYL record at its core, but there are some tracks, lyrically, that I went a little deeper on a personal level with some things I had going on at the time. It is the thickest-sounding production that we have ever recorded. It's just a huge slice of rock. 'Rowyco' is a very diverse album and every track has its purpose."

Album:

It seems like just yesterday that I discovered Jackyl on MTV performing on the bed of as 18 wheeler’s trailer on the music video of “I Stand Alone.” I remember thinking “Wow, that’s a catchy tune.” The band issued the video as a visual protest to K-Mart’s ‘unwillingness’ to stock the band’s 1992 Geffen Records issued ‘self-titled’ debut album. Frontman Jesse James Dupree and [brothers] guitarist Jeff Worley and drummer Chris Worley have gone through a few line-up changes but they have endured. Bassist Roman Glick (Brother Cane, Slave To The System) is the ‘new guy’ in the band, though he’s been in the line-up for about 15 years at this point. If you’re familiar with the band, you bet that “I Stand Alone,” “Down On Me,” “When Will It Rain,” and “The Lumberjack” will be showing up on a Jackyl compilation. Deeper cuts from the sophomore like “Push Comes To Shove” and “Secret Of The Bottle” are also welcome additions. It should be noted that the tracks from the two Geffen albums (‘self-titled’ and ‘Push Comes To Shove’) and the Sony album Cut The Crap are the ‘original recordings’ and not recut versions, as often times bands do. Latter day tracks “My Moonshine Kicks Your Cocaine’s Ass,” a high powered groove oriented rocker and the crushing, country influenced “Just Because I’m Drunk,” are both of which have become staples in the current Jackyl set and excellent additions ’25 Years.’Absent are monster cuts “Headed For Destruction” from Push Comes To Shove and “Locked & Loaded” from Cut The Crap’featuring Brian Johnson [AC/DC] on guest vocals; could have easily replaced the ‘uncomfortable’ “Just Like A Negro” (I know it’s a reworked cover of Mother’s Finest, but still…) or the cringe worthy “Rally.” ’25 Years’ closes with a (previously unreleased) live recording of “Redneck Punk” from the Jackyl album and a (previously unreleased) cover of Black Oak Arkansas’ “Hot And Nasty” end the celebration on a high note. As far as compilations go, 25 Years falls somewhere between previous Jackyl compilations 20th Century Masters-The Millennium Collection (2003) and Choice Cuts’ (1998) — the latter being the better of the two. I’m left asking where did that 25 years go?

Album:

Great Maxi CD from 1993.“When Will It Rain” was a great track in ’92 and it’s still great today. Jesse’s wails and the lockdown rustic solos make this a song to be heard again and again. It’s hard to believe the band Jackyl has been in the spotlight since 1992. That’s 25 years, eight studio albums and two Guinness world records (100 concerts in 50 days and 21 concerts in 24 hours) later. Not to mention the groups recent appearances on the Full Throttle Saloon television series and let’s not forget Jesse’s chainsaw. It’s hard to imagine a world without them.I remember when the music video for “When Will It Rain” was flooding MTV, a precursor to the dominance the band would enjoy that year. A platinum selling debut that put the group on the map forever. The music video for “When Will It Rain” opens in a desolate prison. A dusty cell imprisoning sound and denying a much needed release. Men ready to escape, wanting to wash away sins and move on but the heat and strife only intensifies, offering no end in sight. The cuts of the chain gang with the ankle cuffs have always been the most powerful scenes to me. Hard road, hard life, no liberation.Eventually clarity rings true in the form of a hot babe washing a car along the chain gang’s route. An insensible distraction that seemingly allows the prisoners to escape.Although this video is no doubt identifiable, the music track is what makes this effort memorable. “When Will It Rain” was a great track in ’92 and it’s still great today.Jesse’s wails and the lockdown rustic solos make this a song to be heard again and again. It’s one of those songs you find yourself jamming just before a storm. Now is the time to revisit Jackyl and find some southern metal release.
