Bio:

Vandenberg was a Dutch hard rock band named after guitarist Ad "Adje" van den Berg (a.k.a. Adrian Vandenberg). In 1981, Van den Berg worked with vocalist Jos Veldhuizen, bass guitarist Griff "Studly" McGrath and drummer Bico De Gooijer in a band called Teaser. This line-up did not last long, and Van den Berg then hired Bert Heerink (vocals), Dick Kemper (bass guitar), and Jos Zoomer (drums). With this line-up, Teaser recorded a demo that came to the notice of the pop-journalist Kees Baars. Baars offered to manage the group, and contracted the band at Atlantic Records in the U.S..Their first album, Vandenberg, was recorded at the former Led Zeppelin's guitarist Jimmy Page's studio, Sol Studios, and in 1983 their first single, "Burning Heart". reached No. 39 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts. Vandenberg toured the U.S. as the opening act for Ozzy Osbourne and KISS, and toured independently in Japan in 1984. "Different Worlds" from their second album, Heading for a Storm, also did fairly well, but did not equal the success of "Burning Heart".The band's third album, Alibi, was recorded in the Netherlands, produced by Jaap Eggermont, former drummer of the Golden Earrings. The album failed to enter the charts, and not long after, the lead singer, Heerink, was kicked out of the band. Demos with the new lead singer, Peter Struyk (a.k.a. Peter Stuyk, Peter Strikes, Peter Strykes and Peter William Strykes), were not well received by Atlantic.Around that time, Van den Berg (who often uses an Anglicized version of his Dutch name: Adrian Vandenberg) played as a guest soloist on a Whitesnake album, and in 1987 Whitesnake vocalist David Coverdale asked him to join the band permanently. With the band Vandenberg amounting to nothing, he accepted the invitation. The other members also started or joined other projects: Zoomer and Struyk joined Avalon; Kemper started a new band, No Exqze; Bert Heerink joined Picture for their Marathon album. In 2004, there was a reunion of Vandenberg, and they released a double CD, The Definitive Vandenberg, a compilation of the band's best songs with a newly recorded version of "Burning Heart". In January, 2005 the band released a DVD with footage of a 1984 Tokyo concert. In July 2012, it was reported that Heerink, Kemper and Zoomer were trying to take over control over the name "Van Den Berg" from the band's guitarist.

Album:

The Dutch only 2-CD release “The Definitive Vandenberg”, including hard rockers VANDENBERG all singles remastered, plus new recordings and an extra disc of rarities, previously unreleased material. This isn’t the typical ‘best of’, because includes a bunch of never heard Vandenberg songs essential for fans of the band and really enjoyable for hard rock aficionados in general. The first disc features all of the band’s singles to date – some in its 7” versions not available on CD before – ‘inside tracks’, as well as one new track; a re-recorded version of their biggest hit ‘Burning Heart’ entitled “Burning Heart 2004” including a string arrangement.Of course, the original version of ‘Burning Heart’ is part of the track list. The second disc “Rarities” is a collection of previously unreleased material including live tracks, quality pre-production demos and a new acoustic version of Burning Heart, “Burning Heart 2004 Unplugged”.It’s great to discover very good hard rocking songs that unfortunately never made it in disc but truly deserved it judging it quality, such as ‘Nothing to Lose’, the melodic ‘Ready for You’, ‘Back on My Feet’ (recalls early Europe), ‘I’m on Fire’ or the punchy ‘Out in the Streets’.Featuring a lovely naif cover artwork painted by a young Adrian Vandenberg in 1977, with a potent remastered job this “The Definitive Vandenberg” is a killer, rare release, a must for fans and collectors.

Album:

Adrian Vandenberg would become famous worldwide as part of Whitesnake, but the axe man started his career with his Dutch band VANDENBERG in the early ’80s. The group’s second album “Heading For A Storm” is being reissued by Rock Candy specialists remastered and with a trio of bonus tracks.Produced by Stuart Epps (Twisted Sister), “Heading For A Storm” showcased a more mature Vandenberg, one with increasingly sophisticated songs – all written by Adrian himself – with the intention to obtain a more commercial sound to appeal the US market.Polished guitar work, keyboard fills, more catchy choruses & harmony vocals at places very close to AOR is what you’ll find on this CD.Adrian plays beautifully and his sense of melody & technique are always adeptly balanced on this record, he knows when it’s appropriate to serve up an insane solo as well as when a more subtle melody is required. The vocals, courtesy of Bert Heerink, are solid and very ‘European’.However, the overall style is very Americanized, in a melodic Dokken-esque vein – just check the excellent “Different Worlds”. The melodious riffs that Vandenberg knocks out on tunes such as “Time Will Tell” and “I’m On Fire” are maybe the reason behind Coverdale knocking on his door later down the musical line.On the more hard rocking numbers like “This Is War”, “Rock On” and “Friday Night” Adrian’s guitar work is extremely active constantly keeping things interesting, while the intensity does blow up title track “Heading For A Storm” plus some fine harmony vocals from Bert Heerink. This Special Deluxe Collector’s Edition of “Heading For A Storm” by Rock Candy features a fully remastered sound shaped from 24 BIT digital technology, enhanced artwork and three raw & hot, previously unreleased live tracks: “Ready For You”, “Lost In A City” and “Too Late”, all recorded at Houston, Texas, on March 3rd, 1983.

Album:

Rock Candy has remastered Melodic Hard Rock album from the mid-Eighties; the last recording of VANDENBERG "Alibi".Adrian Van den Berg (who uses an Anglicized version of his Dutch name: Adrian Vandenberg) has been, quite rightly, hailed as one of the world’s best rock guitar players, carving out a first class reputation for himself since the early '70s.His own band Vandenberg formed in Holland in 1981 became one of the surprise attractions during the early Eighties, storming the US charts and stylistically rivalling the cream of hard rock contenders such as Ratt, Dokken and Def Leppard. After two very good records with an edgy Hard Rock style, "Alibi" was their third and final album, recorded back in Holland but mastered in the USA by the skilled Bob Ludwig.Issued in 1985, the record showcased all that was good about the band, with its powerful riffs, hooks galore and well-crafted arrangements, and a much more Melodic approach than before, even with some AOR moments.Once Again, it was talented Adrian who stole the show, writing all the songs, providing a remarkable selection of guitar solos, playing the keyboards, producing and designing the artwork (his own paint), contributions that would not go unnoticed amongst his contemporaries.Indeed, once Adrian had disbanded Vandenberg, David Coverdale approached him to join Whitesnake for their hugely successful ‘1987’ album. "Alibi" is just a terrific example of the mid-Eighties Melodic Hard Rock sound. It straddled the line between hard-hitting Hard Rock and radio-friendly Melodic Rock perfectly, delivering equal amounts of polish and punch. Rockers like "All The Way" (those massive backing vocals during the chorus are to die for), the killer "Voodoo", or the hard rock perfection of "Fighting Against the World" a real pearls.Title track is a super MHR tune, while the AOR "Once In A Lifetime" is one of the best mid-tempo power ballads produced at the time.Another great AOR cut can be found on the velvety "How Long", driven by a deep bass line with a with slow, clean guitar playing all over it and adorned with elegant keyboards. Singer Bert Heerink shines on both songs.Just when you thought that Vandenberg could not top their debut, they come back with "Alibi", their best album, or if you prefer, the most complete of their career. There's moments of true Melodic Hard Rock perfection on this, sadly, underrated and underappreciated album. The Rock Candy remaster is excellent, bright, rich in harmonics and with a punchy yet controlled dynamic output.

Album:

VANDENBERG, a name with an illustrious past led by master guitarist Adrian Vandenberg, the Dutch foursome released three quality albums during the early to mid-’80s, namely, the self-titled 1982 debut, (spawning the US hit single ‘Burning Heart’) ‘Heading For A Storm’ (’83) and ‘Alibi’ (’85).Adrian was a member of Whitesnake for 13 years at the height of their fame, he spent many years dueling with Steve Vai on guitar and has returned for many reunions. He was part of supergroup Manic Eden and more recently, he has shown his cultured ability is firmly intact with Vandenberg’s Moonkings. The guitarist pulled a master stroke by bringing in Rainbow’s Ronnie Romero on vocals for this 2020 comeback. The reversion to the Vandenberg name marks, not only a line up change with Ronnie Romero of Richie Blackmore’s Rainbow coming in on vocals, but an updated sound in term of production, still retaining Vandenberg’s classic melodies.‘Shadows of the Night’ could easily be a Whitesnake song from circa ‘Still of The Night’ demonstrating that, if you like your hard rock classic, you’re in the right place.‘Freight Train’ keeps up the rockin’ pace with big riffs and huge vocals. However, possibly the best new song on the album ‘Hell and High Water’ really showcases Romero’s voice which must be one of the best around for this kind of classic hard rock scaling to the heights of Dio and Coverdale with little effort. His foreign accent comes out on a few tracks noticibly ‘Let it Rain’ and ‘Ride Like the Wind’, although sounding more Germanic than Chilean which is where he is from, and reminding a little of the Scorpions.Vandenberg himself provides soaring ’80s style solos showing that any difficulties he had playing from his car accident are long in his distant past.‘Shout’ is a straightforward anthem built to be played live. ‘Shitstorm’ with special guests Rudy Sarzo and Brian Tichy, both ex Whitesnake members, contains some vocals with a lovely warm tonality like Coverdale’s early blues period, but develops with a more Teutonic metal chorus.A new version of the ’80s Vandenberg anthem ‘Burning Heart’ harks back to the history of the band – it’s their most successful song while giving it up to date big production. ‘Skyfall’ rounds out the album with a huge chorus that stands up to past glories and ends the new CD in grand style.Vandenberg “2020” doesn’t disappoints: energetic, heavy, catchy, full of fire at places, showcasing Adrian completely recovered and playing better than ever, a stupendous vocalist, and very good, entertaining new songs.

Line Up:

Adrian Vandenberg – Guitar (ex-WHITESNAKE)
Ronnie Romero – Vocals (RAINBOW, LORDS OF BLACK)
Randy Van Der Elsen – Bass (TANK)

Album:

Dutch guitarist and songwriter Adrian Vandenberg formed the band Teaser in 1977. Joining forces with lead vocalist Bert Heerink, bassist Dick Kemper, and drummer Jos Zoomer, the new band’s demo led to a worldwide deal with Atlantic Records. The band – now named band after their guitarist and songwriter – released their eponymous debut Vandenberg (CD1) via Atlantic imprint ATCO in 1982.Produced by Vandenberg and recording engineer Stuart Epps at Jimmy Page’s Sol Studios in the UK, the album featured the power ballad ‘Burning Heart’, the track making an impressive dent on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1983. The track ‘Wait’ was also issued as a single. Vandenberg became a big concert draw, with major tours supporting Ozzy Osbourne and KISS, as well as shows in Japan, where the band had grown popular enough to headline in their own right.Following hot on the heels of their debut, 1983’s Heading For A Storm (CD2) was released the following year, cementing the success of the first record. Again co-produced with Stuart Epps at Sol Studios, the singles ‘Friday Night’, ‘Waiting For The Night’ and ‘Different Worlds’ further broadened their appeal.Fans had to wait until the end of 1985 before they could hear more Vandenberg, with the release of Alibi (CD3). The biggest change for Vandenberg’s third record was the production duties were now handled by pop producer and former Golden Earring drummer, Jaap Eggermont. An accomplished and respected artist, Adrian Vandenberg also produced the album cover artwork for ‘Alibi’, ‘Heading For A Storm’ and the self-titled debut. Shortly after ‘Alibi’, Vandenberg effectively split up, with Adrian joining Whitesnake for the remainder of the 1980s.CD4 collects together the officially released rarities, including demos of ‘Back On My Feet’, ‘Ready For You’, ‘Nothing To Lose’, ‘I’m On Fire’, ‘Out In The Streets’, ‘Out Of Cash’ and ‘Help Me Thru The Night’. Also included here are both mono and stereo edits for the ‘Burning Heart’ single, plus ‘Once In A Lifetime’ (Special Mix). The set finishes with the live tracks ‘Ready For You’, ‘Lost In A City’, ‘Friday Night’ and ‘Welcome To The Club’ (both recorded in Japan), ‘Roll Through The Night’ (Live in the U.S.A.) and ‘Too Late’. The fourth CD ends with the 2004 Unplugged version ‘Burning Heart’. In 2004, Vandenberg recorded a new version of ‘Burning Heart’, included here.Thankfully, a brand new version of Vandenberg formed in 2020, releasing the 2020 album, with a line-up featuring Rainbow vocalist Ronnie Romero, with Randy van der Elsen on bass and Koen Herfst on drums. This collection is completed by an extensive, new essay from Adrian Vandenberg himself, detailing the history of the band.

Album:

Every album paints a picture. Instead of utilizing a brush and canvas, Vandenberg paints with towering vocals, earthquaking rhythms, and the iconic and instantly recognizable fretwork of guitarist and namesake Adrian Vandenberg.Three years after "2020", Vandenberg returns with a new album and an invigorated line-up. Joined by vocalist Mats Levén, drummer Koen Herfst, and bassist Randy van der Elsen, the influential axe-slinger delivers a vibrant, visceral, and vital vision on the group’s fifth full-length offering, SIN, brought to life in broad strokes of anthemic hard rock and airtight metal and produced by Bob Marlette (Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie). The album cover was once again painted by the multi-faceted Adrian Vandenberg, and you'll be glad to know that the sharks from the classic "Heading For A Storm" album cover have returned!

Line Up:

Mats Levén - Vocals
Adrian Vandenberg – Guitar (ex-WHITESNAKE)
Randy Van Der Elsen – Bass (TANK)
Koen Herfst – Drums (BOBBY KIMBALL, EPICA and DORO)
