Bio:

Amazing a rare melodic hard rock band from US.Band founded in 1989.This band plays excellent melodic hard rock/glam/AOR similar to 80's Bon Jovi & Danger Danger. The band went on to change their name to Blackfish in 1991 and were signed to a major label. Recommended to all who love the classic 80's US AOR.Only one album "Big Dream" in 1989.Good songs, good voice.Music is pretty cool..these guys went on to become the more polished Blackfish.

Album:

A fantastic cover...If I saw this CD in a record store, I’d grab it for the cover. If you head to Heavy Harmonies, you’ll see this CD listed on the Ebay Rarities list at around $122 average. It’s an independent release, by an unsigned band, from the glory days of the late ’80s…..I can see how someone might pay through the nose for it looking to score a lost gem. Some of the comments suggest that it IS a lost gem of pure Hard Rock.I acquired this album last week for half of the going rate. Pleased with my Ebay savvy, I popped this CD in upon it’s arrival, eagerly anticipating this lost treasure. It’s very light Melodic Hard Rock/AOR. A cross between Great White-lite, White Lion-lite, Bon Jovi-lite, etc. Get the picture? Obviously, I didn’t like it, it bored me. It is Hard Rock but more fluff than balls. None of the songs are memorable, I didn’t like the songwriting at all. The vocals are a cross between Kevin Cronin (REO Speedwagon), Ted Poley (Danger Danger), Mike Tramp (White Lion), and a non-bluesy Jack Russell (Great White) all taken up a bit higher. Now these guys are all cool on their own, add them together and it’s a mess. I played this CD at least 10 times trying to find something I liked, I just couldn’t find anything! There are reasons why many independent bands didn’t get signed back in the day. Some were in the wrong place at the wrong time, some had bad management, some couldn’t catch a break, and some couldn’t play. Then there are the bands that could play but their material wasn’t up to par…..this is The Unknown – Big Dreams.

Line-Up:

Chris Reublin - bass (Ex-Blackfish)
Andy Howerd - drums (Ex-Blackfish)

Bio:

The Unknown was formed smack dab in the sweet spot, 1987. A mainstay on the Florida’s west coast, the truly AOR band started gaining a following with each show played which then yielded bigger and bigger gigs. They were eventually asked to play spring break gigs in Ft. Lauderdale, one of the biggest draws for college students. There was a theory behind this…The Unknown drew lots and lots of girls to their shows and the boys would follow…the band was untouchable and could play anywhere they wanted on the Florida scene. In 1989, The Unknown released their first and only album “Big Dreams”…a true gem that now fetches about $150 on ebay – but know you can get the remastered version of it for a normal price thanks to FnA Records. The band won the Budweiser Battle of the bands and A&R scouts started taking notice. Eventually EPIC Records signed the band in 1992, but had the band change their name…they were now known as Blackfish…who released a major album release, although be it as grunge worked its way in and AOR/melodic rock was ushered out.

Album:

FnA Records have done it again as they have unearthed another album from the ’80s and released it as a remastered version.Melodic rockers The Unknown‘s debut and lone album Big Dreams is now available via FnA Records‘ website.Formed in 1987 by songwriter / singer Steve Ballard, THE UNKNOWN quickly became a mainstay on the Florida state circuit, a Melodic Rock AOR band that started gaining a following with each show played which then yielded bigger and bigger gigs. They were eventually asked to play spring break gigs in Ft. Lauderdale, one of the biggest draws for college students. After a 1988 demo tape, the next year THE UNKNOWN professionally recorded their first and only album titled “Big Dreams”, released by themselves on quality silver-pressed CD. Over the years the album achieved collectors item status fetching about $150 on eBay.Now FnA Records is reissuing “Big Dreams” for the first time, a collection of well crafted melodic tunes rooted in the lighter zone of the Melodic Rock realm. Musically pleasant, “Big Dreams” is also regarded by fans of the genre for sporting one of the coolest cover art for an indie release.THE UNKNOWN won the Budweiser Battle of the bands and A&R scouts started taking notice. Eventually EPIC Records signed the group in 1992, but had the band change their name… they were re-branded as Blackfish, releasing a self-titled major label produced CD.‘Never Comin’ Back’, ‘Hey Julie’, ‘Can’t Give Up’ are among the best cuts, alternating melodic rock with AOR, ‘For You’ being the most rocking number.
