Bio:

Thunder are an English hard rock band, who originally formed in 1989 when the band Terraplane broke up, leaving lead singer Danny Bowes and guitarist/main songwriter Luke Morley to form a new group, namely Thunder. Retaining Terraplane drummer Gary James (popularly known as 'Harry' James), they completed the line-up with bassist Mark 'Snake' Luckhurst and guitarist/keyboard player Ben Matthews. Though the band's main area of support has remained their homeland of the UK, they also enjoy significant success in Japan.Luke Morley and Danny Bowes first met at Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College in 1975, where they formed the band Nuthin' Fancy, which played in pubs around the London area and released an independent single "Looking For A Good Time". When Harry James joined after the previous drummer left, the band renamed themselves Terraplane. As Terraplane they played numerous gigs, including regular performances at the Marquee Club and a slot at the 1982 Reading Festival. They were signed by Epic Records and ultimately released two albums.Renamed Thunder, they were signed to EMI after performing a demo audition in 1989, and began recording their first album Back Street Symphony. With their producer, Andy Taylor (of Duran Duran) they created blues-rock and atmospheric ballads. Their debut album was a success in the UK, helped by an appearance at the 1990 Monsters of Rock festival at Donington Park.A follow-up album, Laughing on Judgement Day appeared in 1992 and reached number 2 in the UK Albums Chart. All four singles released from the album were Top 40 hits, and A Better Man made the UK Top 20 in early 1993. Snake quit the band after the subsequent tour and was replaced by Swedish bass player Mikael Höglund. In the meantime, rumours of an approach by Whitesnake singer David Coverdale to recruit Luke Morley were circulating, although in 2002 Danny Bowes stated that "the whole thing was made up" by the band to engineer some press interest.[1] and it would be another two years before the third album appeared. That album, Behind Closed Doors was reasonably successful, reaching number 5 in the UK Albums Chart. Despite this it was to be the band's last studio album for EMI, and they parted company with the label with a compilation: Their Finest Hour... And A Bit, notable for its inclusion of several unreleased tracks, in particular a cover of the Python Lee Jackson song "In a Broken Dream". For personal reasons Mikael Höglund was unable to participate in the recording of the band's fourth album The Thrill Of It All; Luke Morley handled bass duties and the album was released on the independent B Lucky record label. The band recruited bassist Chris Childs for the tour and he remained with them for the rest of their

Album:

Thunder's fourth studio album is the last being remastered, with this 2-CD Expanded Edition packing a bonus disc including B-sides, deluxe edition extras and the exclusive, original Japan edition Bonus Track.Produced by lead guitarist Luke Morley, "The Thrill Of It All" was initially only released in Japan by Victor Entertainment in 1996, with the European release by Castle Communications (under the band's B Lucky new own label) following on 2 February 1997.Unlike they did on previous albums Laughing On Judgement Day and Behind Closed Doors, Thunder vocalist Danny Bowes and second guitarist Ben Matthews did not contribute to songwriting – all songs were written primarily by main songwriter Morley, with drummer Gary "Harry" James co-writing four tracks.Due to personal reasons which eventually led to his departure in the summer of 1996, bassist Mikael "Micke" Höglund did not perform on the album, with all bass recorded by Morley.By 1996, on "The Thrill Of It All" Thunder started to take a more British classic rock approach, as the hard rock sound of the late 80s / early 90s was pretty much fade away. However, and despite its bluesy foundation, half of the songs here still delivers that kind of classic hard riffs we love so much.Kicking it off the right way with 'Pilot Of My Dreams' - containing some of the best background vocals / chorus on the CD with the incessant 'Get down, get down, get down', this record oozes class from start to finish. There's fun rockers in 'Welcome to the Party' and 'Cosmetic Punk', while title track is a superb midtempo tune."Love Worth Dying For" is easily one of my favorite Thunder ballads, still sending thrills to my spine each time I listen to. This song worth this album alone.Another fav of mine is the great 'Something About You', which always remind me of classic Boston / Scholz, featuring a smooth Danny Bowes vocal performance. This 2CD release includes excellent bonuses; 'Don't Wait Up for Me' (Extended Version), 'Hirsute Boogie' and 'Every Word's a Lie' (B-Sides of 'Don't Wait Up...'), 'Somebody to Love' and 'Lethal Combination' (B-Sides of 'Love Worth Dying For'), 'Something About You' & 'Bring It on Home' (Acoustic Versions). And one of my favorites is the rocker 'Too Bad' (original Japan Bonus Track), featuring former producer (and ex Duran Duran / The Power Station) Andy Taylor dropping a hot guest guitar solo.Thunder's "The Thrill Of It All" is British classic rock galore, sporting an immaculate production and meticulous songcraft. The album make it a huge smash in Japan, and it wasn't released in America turning it very hard to find in the USA.This "The Thrill Of It All [2-CD Enhanced Special Edition remastered]" is the one to get, one of the Rock albums recorded during the mid-Nineties that better stand the test of time. It's Thunder, it's all good.

Album:

One of the most popular and enduring British rock bands of the last 25 years, Thunder celebrate the release of their landmark tenth studio album, ‘Wonder Days’, by embarking on an arena tour in March 2015.Since forming in 1989, the Londoners have established themselves among the genre’s most consistent attractions, notching up some twenty Top Fifty singles and cultivating a well deserved reputation as consummate live performers. Having been feted by W Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses and Whitesnake’s David Coverdale, their first two albums, ‘Back Street Symphony’ (1990) and ‘Laughing On Judgement Day’ (1992), both were certified Gold in the UK.The group’s first studio album in six years, ‘Wonder Days’ reminds us why Thunder are now more popular than ever before. With a lineage dating back to the cream of hard rock – Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, The Who and Deep Purple – and songwriting greats such as the Kinks, The Beatles and The Faces, the band’s sound is a timeless marriage of unforgettable melodies and sheer rock power.Thunder’s legend has grown ever larger with the passing of time. In recent years they have rightly become recognised as show-stealers at such open air events as Download, Sonisphere, High Voltage and, earlier this summer, at the Calling Festival on London’s Clapham Common, where they received a reaction every bit as reverential as that of bill-toppers, Aerosmith. The phrase ‘band of the people’ is overused, but in Thunder’s case it rings perfectly true. They’re back in our lives because people want to hear them, but also due to the sheer joy of playing music together.Like all acts of proven substance, Thunder’s is now an all-ages fan base. “We get multiple generations of the same family coming to our shows,” Danny Bowes enthuses. “A dad will introduce his son or daughter at the after show party, explaining that it’s their first ever gig, and often their eyes are like saucers, and they can't speak with excitement. I love that we’re helping to bring through the next generation of rock fans.”Given the demand, it’s fitting then that for their next UK tour Thunder will (for the first time) headline their own arena shows, though in London the band prefer the Hammersmith (now Eventim) Apollo to the cavernous Wembley Arena, where most critics agreed they stole the show on the tour with Whitesnake and Journey in May 2013.Special Guests on all three dates will be the hugely popular West Country rockers Reef, and fast-rising Brits Tax The Heat will open the shows.Wonder Days will be released in Feb 2015, but can be pre-ordered now.

Album:

Entitled “All You Can Eat”, the three-disc set documents the story of “Wonder Days”, Thunder’s first studio album for 6 years, and includes a live album, a live in-the-studio session, and a documentary film. Furthermore, the fans can expect a special treat: “Live At Loud Park”, a roaring show the band played in Japan in 2014, also released as a ltd. edition 12” vinyl album. See separate sales note.

CD1 – Starter – The RAK Session The session took place at the famous RAK Studio 1 on November 4th and 5th 2014, during the two days preceding the band’s show at Brooklyn Bowl in the O2 in London. The band set up in the studio to record 100% live, and as quickly as possible. They played fourteen songs one after another, with no breaks, no stops, overdubs or fix ups. The end result is astonishing.

CD2 – Main Course – Live At The Brooklyn Bowl The Brooklyn Bowl show on November 6th 2014 was offered free to fans, in association with Classic Rock Magazine. There was no fee for tickets, and fans applied online in their thousands for the chance to hear the band play brand new songs from ‘Wonder Days’, three months ahead of the release, alongside Thunder classics, and some never played before covers. The rules were pretty simple – no cameras, no video, no social media updates, just word of mouth. Thunder fans duly obliged, and the evening was stunning. The show was captured; audio and video, and eight of the songs were given away on the cover of Classic Rock Magazine in January 2015. The rest have stayed in the filing cabinet, until now…

CD pressing of this 2017 holiday single. Christmas 2017 sees the established hard rockers in a brand new light. The title track "Christmas Day", a heartfelt ballad that has been recorded in a - for Thunder - unusual manner: featuring a soft acoustic guitar and minimal arrangement while singer Danny Bowes' impressive vocal talent is specifically showcased. The rest of the single release is equally precious. With songs like "Love Walked In", "Low Life In High Places" and "Heartbreak Hurricane" in a similarly pure setting, Thunder prove the width of their musical range by exploring new horizons. It's time for a little celebration for Thunder, before what promises to be a very busy 2018 gets underway. The band are releasing a brand new song “Christmas Day” to bookend a very successful phase in their career which culminated with two studio albums in a row entering the Official UK Top 10 Albums. The most recent “Rip it Up” charted at #3, whilst their recent live concert film “All You Can Eat” charted at #1 and their touring included a UK arena tour and numerous concerts across the world.“Christmas Day” is more a timeless ballad than a traditional festive carol, and reveals the band in a new light. The heartfelt, melancholic song features a stunning and evocative arrangement from guitarist Luke Morley to accompany the unique voice of singer Danny Bowes. The single is released in some highly collectable formats with exclusive additional songs released on CD for the 1st time. They include a new version of Thunder classic “Love Walked In”, which appears in a new re-recorded and mostly acoustic arrangement, the classic “Low Life in High Places” featuring similar treatment as does the more recent song “Heartbreak Hurricane”.“Christmas Day” is released as CD Digipak and Digital on December 1st, 2017 on earMusic. The official Thunder store also offers a wide variety of exclusive, limited fan items and bundles, including a 7inch 2-track vinyl as well as a coloured 10inch 4-track vinyl.Pre-order “Christmas Day”: Webstore, CD & iTunesThunder will be Alice Cooper's special Guest on his German tour in November. On December 15th and 16th Thunder perform their annual Christmas show in Wolverhampton. The first date sold out quickly due to huge demand; a handful of tickets are still available for the second show. Further details can be found on the band’s website here.

Album:

On March 23, Thunder will release a brand-new live set,"Stage", through earMUSIC. "Stage" features hits from right across the band’s career and includes fan favourite classics like "Backstreet Symphony", "Low Life In High Places" & "Love Walked In" and brings things right up to date with tracks from the 2017 top-3 UK Chart Album "Rip It Up", like the storming title track and "She Likes The Cocaine".Thunder is - of course - a noted and globally in demand live act. "Stage" was captured at Cardiff Motorpoint Arena on March 24, 2017 during the UK Tour. The band also played Europe, North America & Asia, toured across Germany with Alice Cooper, at Planet Rock’s ‘Rockstock’ and prepares to fly to Japan for some January 2018 dates. This is a band that knows how to rock a crowd!Frontman Danny Bowes says of the new record: “The ‘Rip It Up’ album was so well received, it was no surprise the tour was brilliant too. We decided to include a Cardiff Motorpoint Arena show on the tour, purely because it was so good when we played there with Journey & Whitesnake in 2013. Capturing it as well turned out to be one of our better decisions, because the resulting film and album are a shining example of an organic ‘coming together’ of fans and a band. We’ve released a few live recordings over the years, but this is most definitely up there with the best of them. We're extremely pleased with it.”"Stage" will be available as a 2CD + Blu-ray, 3LP, DVD, Blu-ray and a Limited Edition Box Set.Since forming in 1989, Thunder have established themselves at the top table of UK rock, notching up some twenty Top Fifty singles and two Gold albums. The band’s sound is a timeless marriage of unforgettable melodies and sheer rock power. "Stage" shows off not just an amazing catalogue of unforgettable rock hits, but just the sheer live power that Thunder possess.

Album:

Thunder are delighted to announce that their brand-new studio album "Rip It Up" will be released on 10th February 2017 on earMUSIC. The album, their 11th, features 11 brand-new songs recorded in 2016 and is proof positive that this is a band that exists only to push itself and aim higher. Following on from the Top Ten success enjoyed by previous release "Wonder Days", "Rip It Up" - as the title suggests – sees Danny Bowes, Luke Morley, Ben Matthew, Chris Childs and ‘Harry’ James stretching themselves musically, lyrically and creatively. Frontman Danny said: “After the positive reaction to ‘Wonder Days’ we were very happy, and it justified the approach we took in writing and recording. We decided to push it further on all fronts this time, to see what happened, and I think it shows in the writing and the individual performances. We couldn’t have made this album 10 or even 5 years ago, we weren’t good enough! We’re really looking forward to playing the new tunes live alongside the more established ones.” Fans don’t have to wait long, the band will embark on a nationwide UK tour in March, with full details and ticket links on the band’s website http://www.thunderonline.com. This album comes nearly three decades into their career and, if 27 is normally famed and feared as the rock milestone at which many of the great and the good have had their creative flames extinguished, then Thunder have arrived with a bulging bag of tunes, a notebook of great lyrics, a jerrycan of petrol, and a match. There are rockers, like the incendiary title track, ripsnorters like "She Likes The Cocaine", whilst songs like "Right From The Start" take the pace down, but turn the intensity up. Whilst the album closes out with the stylish blues-tinged melancholia of "There’s Always A Loser", it’s clear that the band have continued with their winning ways. After a summer of great gigs including killer performances at Ramblin’ Man and Steelhouse Festival, the quintet know what works and how to pace a set of songs. Title track "Rip It Up" is more than just a great and contemporary rock track, it’s a statement of intent. Thunder, as Danny sings 'don’t do subtle, don’t rely on luck', there’s quality in depth and style to burn here. Thunder have never sounded so intent or intense and, whilst this album cleaves to what made the band’s fans fall in love with them originally, there’s risk taking and ambition aplenty here. Thunder have no interest in taking the easy way. Since forming in 1989, the Londoners have established themselves among the UK’s most consistent attractions, notching up some 20 Top Fifty singles, 2 Gold albums and cultivating a well-deserved reputation as consummate live performers. The band’s sound is a timeless marriage of unforgettable melodies and sheer rock power. "Rip It Up" is a welcome addition to the Thunder catalogue, but more than that it represents another step up, another leap forwards. This is a band with a happy knack for crafting stone cold rock classics – but they’re not so interested in adhering to the rule book … "Rip It Up"? Too right.

Thunder will release their brand new studio album ‘Please Remain Seated’ on 18 January 2019 through BMG. The album, released as the band enter their third decade, is a collection of radically reworked versions of songs from throughout their extensive catalogue. This album will raise eyebrows, hackles and heartbeats in equal measure. ‘Please Remain Seated’ is the sound of a band taking a strange journey into their own music, but also distilling thirty years of playing together in order to create something truly compelling, taking in flavours of rock, blues, jazz and soul along the way. The album has been mastered at half speed for dynamic range. ‘She’s So Fine’ the first single from the album was released internationally on 19 October 2018 with the second single being ‘Miracle Man’ available now. There’s a loose and informal exchange before ‘Bigger Than Both of Us’ jumps from the speakers with an unexpected jauntiness and swing. In a way it’s the biggest shock here on an album that came with prior warnings from the band that they’d taken a little more left-field approach to this album of reworked versions of much loved ‘tunes’ (as danny might call them). But whatever you think of the jazzy thrust one thing is for certain – Danny’s voice is as wonderful as ever, and backed by some nice honky-tonk keys we make it to the end almost unscathed right to the Terry-Thomas like codicil ‘Damn it I think we might have it there’……and you know what my fine fellows? I think he might just be right. As if to rub it in the next song ends up being one of the biggest highlights here. ‘Future Train’ starts off all jangley, mystical and vaguely Eastern and keeps its low key edge before slowly building and growing till it’s fully-formed; fluid and sporting some wonderfully warm and soulful female backing vocals that really add to the song that always threatens to take off at the drop of a power chord but somehow manages to restrain itself! The title ‘Girl’s Going Out Of Her Head’ of course is one that should be more familiar to even the most casual old school fan, back in the day this fiery rocker was an indispensable part of the set. It’s also one of the covers here that you really need to be on first name terms with the original to get the full force effect of the ‘re-imagining’.Counted in with an ambling voice the jazzy swing of this one might be too much for some, but for me the taking of one of Thunder’s most unbridled rockers and turning into a lounge jazz number is the magic. It’s also quite nice to listen to the lyrics to this one!Te album of course is full of gems and even if the odd song doesn’t quite click there’s plenty her to choose from. ‘Dreaming Again’ is perfectly wonderful in it’s stripped-back glory and ‘Fly On The Wall’, even better: Bluesy and deconstructed with a light reggae-like beat; whilst ‘Just Another Suicide’ i less jarring, a nice mid-tempo rocker augmented by those rich female backing vocals.‘Empty City’ another song that see Thunder reach way back into the catalogue, is another that really shines here: with a slow build, bluesy swagger and swirling Hammond it seems like it’s about to soar, but somehow manages to control itself and stay laid back when it would have been so easy to break the shackles. And that here like on ‘Future Train’ is the real joy of this album to me, the restraint show that constantly thwarts expectation and leaves you wanting more of those bite sized portions of rocking goodness, rather than diving head first into the banquet. The rest of the album of course maintains those impeccably high standards: second single ‘Miracle Man’ is suitably bluesy and down and dirty, again with that angelic backing choir and low key keys, it’s another high-point especially when it hits that stuttering acoustic solo. As is the lilting and emotional ‘Blown Away’ which treads a similar path and ‘Loser’ that simply simmers and sizzles laid back on those epic Hammond notes, before its elevated to another lane entirely the guitar. This is the track that will have all fans smiling from ear to ear and all those new to the band immediately wanting more. It’s stunning. That leaves us with the first taste we had of this album back in October – the reworking of Thunder’s most recognisable song ‘She’s So Fine’ – here it’s a wonderful mash of sounds and textures with glittering Gospel-like backing, showcasing a band and the song at their very finest. It’s not quite the final word though, as we close out this eventful side-step of an album with the glorious version of ‘Low Life In High Places’ one of the two epic’s from Thunder’s second long-player ‘Laughing on Judgement Day’ which really put Bowes’ voice to the fore (the other track being ‘Empty City’ which we heard earlier). All I can say is that if you came here just expecting a nice little diversion before the next album, you’ll find far more than that here. Over the years Thunder have proven that they are one of the UK’s finest ever Rock bands time and time again, and ‘Please Remain Seated’ should silence any remaining doubters.

Album:

Thunder will release a career-spanning 28-track album called ‘The Greatest Hits’ this September to celebrate their 30th anniversary.Featuring songs from all 12 of their studio albums, each track on the expansive compilation album was lovingly cherry-picked by Thunder themselves.Released through BMG on Friday 27th September 2019, ‘The Greatest Hits’ is available in four formats: 2CD, 3CD, 3LP and digital. The third disc on the 3CD edition boasts a live session recorded at Planet Rock’s studios on 18th January 2019.Each of the first two discs ends with a cover version of a classic song – The Rolling Stones’ ‘Gimme Shelter’, which was recorded for charity in 1993, plus a previously unreleased version of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Your Time Is Gonna Come’ recorded during the ‘Please Remain Seated’ album sessions.Planet Rock’s very own Danny Bowes says: “Having been at it for 30 years, we now feel we have enough of a body of work behind us to do this properly.“We explored and re-imagined our back catalogue with the ‘Please Remain Seated’ album, and now with ‘The Greatest Hits’ we’ve gathered all our key tunes together. It’s all killer, no filler, and we hope fans like having it all in one place.”Guitarist and songwriter Luke Morley adds: “It was great fun picking the tunes for this compilation, and brilliant to put all of them into one big collection.”Thunder will precede the release ‘The Greatest Hits’ with a very special one-off charity show at The Garage in London on Thursday 26th September with all proceeds going directly to NSPCC / Childline. For one day only this Thursday (27th June) Thunder will have a limited number of Greatest Hits CD + Garage ticket “Combos” for sale on their official website. All sale there that day will also be donated to Childline/NSPCC.Every “Combo" purchaser will be auto-entered into a competition to watch the soundcheck, and Combo Winners will get their copy of the album signed and personally handed to them by the band. All remaining tickets will go on general sale at 10am on Friday 28th June. And in yet further Thunder news, the band have confirmed that work is already underway on their next studio album, which they’re hoping to release in 2020.

Thunder, release their 13th studio album ‘All The Right Noises’ on 12th March 2021.The album is a return to the full-throttle sound of Thunder that has seen them create a hugely successful 30+ year career at the forefront of British rock, all built around the lifelong friendship of vocalist extraordinaire Danny Bowes and songwriting genius and guitarist Luke Morley.British hard-rock heroes THUNDER will release their 13th studio album, "All The Right Noises", on March 12, 2021. The disc's first single, "Last One Out Turn Off The Lights", can be streamed below."All The Right Noises" is a return to the full-throttle sound of THUNDER that has seen them create a hugely successful 30-plus-year career at the forefront of British rock, all built around the lifelong friendship of vocalist extraordinaire Danny Bowes and songwriting genius and guitarist Luke Morley."All The Right Noises" is an intense confection of illicit charms that reasserts their authority as the number one band in the land. Recorded in the months leading up to the first COVID-19 lockdown, it was originally due for release in September 2020. Strange to reflect then on how much of the new material appears to address the challenging new world we now inhabit. On the album, Luke says: "All the songs were written and recorded pre-COVID. But it is interesting how if you look at some of the tracks through the prism of COVID, they still make a lot of sense.”The volcanic lead single from the album, "Last One Out Turn Off The Lights", could easily be mistaken for world-ending lockdown rage. But, says Luke, "That was directly about Brexit, but you could apply it to everything else."The track is indicative of both the ferocity and message of the album as a whole, with subjects tackled including depression, mental health, and diversity. With their knack for imaginative songwriting, "All The Right Noises" also takes aim at Donald Trump in a song written from his perspective, as well as a song Luke describes as "like the opposite" of "My Generation" by THE WHO in its message."All The Right Noises" will be available in 1CD, 2CD, 2LP, and 4LP formats, with the 2CD and 4LP releases containing bonus tracks. The LP versions feature a stunning pop-out of the "Singing Ringing Tree", which appears on the album's glorious artwork. The photo cover art was shot by the band's long-term collaborator Jason Joyce. The sculpture, which also appears in the video for "Last One Out Turn Off The Lights", is set in Burnley, Lancashire, and resembles a tree which harnesses the energy of the wind to create a choral, discordant sound."All The Right Noises" follows on from 2019's stripped back and reimagined album "Please Remain Seated", which continued THUNDER's consecutive Top 10 U.K. album chart run since their ecstatically received comeback six years ago. With their most recent success, THUNDER have proven themselves as vital now as when they emerged with their debut album in 1990, "Backstreet Symphony", and their hit follow-up in 1992, "Laughing On Judgement Day", which was only kept off the top spot by Kylie Minogue. The record was recorded at Rockfield Studios and mixed by Mike Fraser.

We’re really looking forward to playing the new tunes live alongside the more established ones.” Fans don’t have to wait long, the band will embark on a nationwide UK tour in March. Too right.

Album:

THUNDER first album “Back Street Symphony“ (or BackStreet Symphony as they want to be named) in its deluxe edition, 2xCD including a lot of bonus material.A must have album in your collection for sure.Backstreet Symphony is the debut studio album by English hard rock band Thunder. Recorded in 1989 at Great Linford Manor Studios in Milton Keynes, it was produced by former Duran Duran and The Power Station guitarist Andy Taylor, then mixed by Mike Fraser at AIR Studios in London. The album was initially released on 5 March 1990 by EMI Records in the UK and Capitol Records in the US, and was later re-released the following year in the US by Geffen Records.Every once in a while, you come across a band that you want the world to know about. I first saw the video for “Dirty Love” from Thunder on MTV (remember when MTV showed videos?). It made me run right out and buy “Backstreet Symphony” on cassette (I didn’t have a CD player yet).It blew me away.Other than “Dirty Love” and “Love Walked In,” Thunder didn’t get much play in the U.S. Many missed out on the brief window they had to hear about this band. They were big in the U.K. and Japan and that’s allowed them to continue even to this day (with a couple of hiatuses). They’ve put out great straight-up hard rock music with melody throughout their career. They came out at the height of the hair metal era, but they weren’t a hair metal band. There a guitar-based, bluesy hard rock outfit. And with a bang…Guitarist Luke Morley, singer Danny Bowes and drummer Gary ‘Harry’ James emerged from the wreckage of Terraplane in 1989 and after enlisting bassist Mark Luckhurst and keyboard and some time guitarist Ben Matthews emerged as Thunder. Thus creating one of the most amazing transformations and re-inventions the rock world had seen in a while.Terraplane, after a reasonably successful start had become pretty much also rans of the struggling late Eighties rock scene as the bands main protagonists pulled in one direction and their record company kept pushing them in another. To be fair to them their two albums are really enjoyable affairs but there really was no sign in 1989 that what was virtually the same band would move from also rans to becoming the new darlings of the UK hard rock scene within twelve months. After performing an audition for EMI, Thunder were given a deal and sent of to the studio to record what many still think is their best album; “BackStreet Symphony”.Danny Bowes has one of the best voices in rock. He reminds me of a more soulful and bluesy David Coverdale. Lead guitarist and main songwriter, Luke Morley creates catchy riffs and crafts stories through their songs.Highlights of the album go deep. In fact, the first seven songs may be one of the best seven song stretches on any LP.“She’s So Fine” kicks it off with Bowes singing of love at first site. The aforementioned “Dirty Love” leads to “Don’t Wait For Me” which gives Bowes a chance to shine on vocals. The songs just keep getting better with “Higher Ground,” “Until My Dying Day,” “Backstreet Symphony,” and the awesome power ballad “Love Walked In” – a true classic tune.Thunder exploded into the big league of British rock on the back of this terrific album and a show stealing performance at the Monsters Of Rock Festival at Donington that summer. Where, despite being bottom of the bill and having to start their set before half of the crowd had been allowed in, they blew every other band off the stage. Ironically one of those bands were headliners Whitesnake, who had by then almost abandoned the sound that had inspired Thunder in the first place. This “BackStreet Symphony [2-CD Remastered Edition with Bonus]” is the one to own.It packs the entire single B-sides, plus a killer performance at Town & Country Club in London, March 7th, 1990, all finely remastered with a pristine punchy sound.A must-have for all classic hard rock fans.

Album:

British hard rock heroes Thunder release their 14th studio album "Dopamine", just over a year from their previous UK #3 album "All The Right Noises". This double album is a cornucopia of what Thunder does best, which has seen them create a hugely successful 30+ year career at the forefront of British rock. Across the sixteen tracks here are the signature hard rock bangers, melancholy rockers and powerful ballads. The ever prolific Thunder created the entire album while unable to tour due to Covid restrictions in 2021, recording everything that song smith extraordinaire, Luke Morley wrote. Such was the caliber of the tracks, they chose to release the first double album of their career.Thunder may be the band who will just never give up – having been a fan from the earliest Terraplane days in the late 1980’s, and having been lucky enough to be present at the 10th Anniversary “farewell” tour in 1999, and the 20 Years & Out show at Hammersmith Odeon in 2009 (despite moving to Australia in 1998) and even getting to shoot the sold-out Hammersmith Apollo show in March 2015, we felt thrilled to get the band to Australia in 2017 for some intimate, but very raucous club shows. The band took a break after 2009, but came back fully energised in 2015 with the wonderful Wonder Days album, and since then we have seen Rip It Up the reprise album Please Remain Seated, and the 2021 release All The Right Noises? hit the mark with the same quality songwriting, consistent delivery, and attitude that has set Thunder apart from many of their peers, and has led to the longevity of their special relationship with the fans, old and new from 1989 to today.Guitarist, songwriter and Thunder co-founder Luke Morley says: “’We didn’t set out to make a double album but as the writing and recording process went on we wandered into some interesting areas and then it became a case of ‘can we afford to leave any of this off?’ In the end we did reduce it from 20 tunes to 16 but it wasn’t an easy choice.”Dopamine has been inspired by the world’s mass retreat to social media during the pandemic lockdowns, endlessly hunting for the next hit of happy hormones, and comes at what is hoped to be an exciting time for the band as the world starts to open up. Their UK Tour kicks off on May 21st for a few major city dates, before they head out to Europe for the Summer Festival season, including Graspop and Hellfest. Album number 1 opens with the first single taken from it, The Western Sky, with the solid crunch of the Luke Morley riff, and a verse that leads to a classic Thunder pre-chorus and soaring chorus line from Danny Bowes, whose voice seems to get better with every record. The eastern-tinged solo rolls into a great set of drum patterns and accents before the closing chorus, interspersed with searing guitar breaks. Staccato guitars open up One Day We’ll Be Free Again, with the first section being vocals and guitar only, before the band kicks in with a rollicking beat, and some huge choral backing vocals from the female accompanists who were so prominent on the last record. An acoustic / steel guitar intro which bass and drums steam into under the vocals add some southern-blues grunge to Even If It Takes a Lifetime, which features the chorus of the record, providing echoes of some of our favourite Thunder down-tempo tracks. The ladies give us some added texture in the backing vocals, a bit like Shine On You Crazy Diamond in feel.Chris Childs on Bass and Harry James on the Drums provide the pounding intro to Black, which sees a cracking set of dark and intricate riffs under the chorus in particular. This is one of those left-field Thunder tracks that is definitely from the songbook, but with a slight musical twist that sets it apart from the norm. The interplay of the twin guitars of Morley and Ben Matthews is both clever and musically complex, and delivers the signature sound of the track.Unraveling is a gentle ballad, featuring some lovely piano from Matthews, and church-like harmonies, and a slick solo from Morley, which provides a restful interlude before old-school Thunder kicks in again with the foot-stomping rocker of The Dead City. You may have heard the main riff on a previous Thunder album, but it is twinned with an off-key chorus that contrast perfectly with the straight-up chords of the verse. Danny’s wail then sets off a scintillating solo before a variation on the riff and some tight drum-work takes us back to the chorus to close. There is that slight spaghetti western vibe to Last Orders which sees Danny and Luke provide the opening verse, with bass coming in for verse 2, along with some lead guitar breaks, before a two-time riff transforms the track into an almost Clash-like slammer, and sees the band let rip through the middle-eight and solo section. This is almost “cyber-punk” Thunder – and it really works. The first record closes with All The Way, massive drums, crunching riff and powerhouse vocals that evolve into a deliberate and solid beat, allowing Danny to really show off the vocal chords, and Luke’s guitar is really prominent throughout. The mid-section sees dual riffs over crisp drum patterns before a sharp solo that drives into the closing choruses, featuring more guitar breaks, and a reprise of the solid intro to end the track. The first volume has provided some absolute classic Thunder moments, both loud and soft, with ear-worms from prior albums that simply prove that the band has not lost their unique touch and sound, and a couple of deft touches and no little finesse that makes this more than “just another Thunder album”.Volume 2 opens up with a signature Thunder sound, and Dancing In The Sunshine powers ahead with twin guitar riffs over a honky-tonk piano line, into a cracker of an insert segment before verse 2, harmony guitar solo, cracking drum fills and a catchy solo! Big Pink Supermoon is one of those classic Thunder tracks, and Danny really delivers on the vocals, with the keyboard-driven melody over a rock-solid rhythm section. Luke shows off with a quick bluesy solo, and then after another chorus, he lets rip with an outstanding second solo that merges into a slightly jazzy interlude with a great if unexpected sax solo, which rolls on to the fade. The latest single from the album is Across The Nation and it is a belter of a track, destined for the live stage no doubt. Typical Thunder lyrics, a rock-solid riff, more of the corking piano-work, and great big hook-lines in the chorus. A powerhouse mid-section with lead breaks over the top, and then into another cracking solo. A tear-jerker of a track is up next in Just A Grifter, with Danny showing real emotion in the lyrics and vocals, almost in French torch-song style, with piano accordion and strings behind the shuffling beat.I Don’t Believe The World is another Thunder trademark sonic adventure, featuring a slow tempo, a dark melody driven by keys and bass, and a powerful string of guitar chords, some soaring harmonies in the chorus, and an uplifting solo before an accapella segment from the ladies that continues under the closing choruses, while Luke again delivers some searing guitar breaks. An absolute monster of a track is Disconnected, featuring Bonham-esque drums from Harry, some clever double-tracked vocals in the verse, and one of those great Thunder pre-choruses before yet another catchy chorus, with some really innovative backing vocals that scream Beatles, that leads into a quick segment that is all Sgt Pepper! There seems to be no end to the clever little touches that intersperse the record – all of which dovetail wonderfully into the traditional Thunder sound and feel. The penultimate track is another plaintiff ballad, with Danny in fine voice over a delicate piano melody. Is Anybody Out There may be the global cry erupting from COVID isolation, and the track builds through voice and piano to a powerful mid-song crescendo, before Ben provides a wonderful piano piece into the final chorus. A stripped-back intro promises much from No Smoke Without Fire, and just over a minute in, the band piles in with a solid riff and thumping beat, a pre-chorus to die for, and then back to the bare bones for the first half of the solo, before it all kicks off again with the full band. Lots of light and shade through the closing segment of the track, allowing Luke to deliver some final guitar licks. The album will need a few more listens to really appreciate the depth and scope of what the band has achieved here, but yet again there is a sense of progression within the solid foundations of what is undoubtedly a Thunder album. The band has nailed down their sound over the past 7 years, taking all of the elements that started out with Backstreet Symphony Day in 1989 and adding layers and levels of maturity to the overall package, making them a standout British rock band of the past 3 decades. Long may they continue!

Album:

Japan edition with 2 bonus tracks.British hard rock heroes Thunder release their 14th studio album "Dopamine", just over a year from their previous UK #3 album "All The Right Noises".

Album:

British hard rockers THUNDER are releasing expanded remastered reissues of their first 3 albums on both deluxe colored vinyl and digipak CD. Each contains rare, bonus, and unreleased live versions of tracks from these albums.”Behind Closed Doors” was originally released in 1994 and peaked at number 5 in the UK album chart upon release, reinforcing them as one of the finest rock banks from the British Isles. Three UK top 40 singles were released from it; Stand Up, River Of Pain and Castles In The Sand. The album was produced by guitarist Luke Morley and long standing mixer, Mike Fraser (famed for his work with AC/DC, Aerosmith and Metallica, among many others) with writing contributions from every member of the band and former producer and Duran Duran guitarist, Andy Taylor. The album is considered a classic among fans of the band and hard rock alike. This new, expanded edition contains unreleased live & acoustic versions of classic songs from the record, plus an exclusive Limited Edition Art Card included within product packaging.Following the departure of the band’s original bassist Mark “Snake” Luckhurst in December 1992, ‘Behind Closed Doors’ is the first (and only) Thunder album to feature his replacement Mikael “Micke” Höglund, who joined in February 1993.After recording some initial demos of new material in London, Thunder began pre-production on their third studio album in 1994. Mike Fraser, who had previously mixed the band’s debut album Backstreet Symphony in 1990, returned as the main producer for ‘Behind Closed Doors’ alongside lead guitarist and primary songwriter Luke Morley (Fraser also engineered & mixed the record). Then the band flew out to Atlanta, Georgia to begin recording of the album. Speaking about the decision to record the album in the United States, Morley explained that it was “a last-ditch attempt to motivate Geffen”, the band’s American record label, who he claimed had failed to support previous release ‘Laughing on Judgement Day’. However, the band’s A&R representative John Kalodner later left Geffen for Sony Music Entertainment, and the album was ultimately not released in the US.However, ‘Behind Closed Doors’ resulted very successful in the UK, Europe and Japan, away from the US grunge climate. All I can say is: Kudos to Thunder. For not selling their souls to the alternative trend of 1995, instead remainig faithful to to the true Melodic Hard Rock style, and in between, releasing in ‘Behind Closed Doors’, one of the best album of their career. When I first heard ‘Behind Closed Doors’ upon its release in 1995, it literally blew me away and it still remains among my favourite Thunder albums. The songwriting is largely more varied than before, resulting in a few new tricks to be heard. The album’s opening number is one of the heaviest tracks in the Thunder catalogue. It has a strong Zeppelin influence, both in the pounding drum style and the way keyboards are used to give things a slightly Eastern flavour.‘Fly On The Wall’ and ‘Too Scared To Live’ have strong funk / blues influences: the former makes excellent use of a horn section and soulful backing vocals while the latter has a slightly bluesy vibe during its brief chorus sections, but the verses show a far funkier style than Thunder have previously attempted. The track’s bluesiest vibes come courtesy of a couple of really smart guitar solos. There’s plenty of other stuff from ‘Behind Closed Doors’ that’s instantly familiar. It’s lighters in the air time for ‘Castles In The Sand’, a big stadium number, very similar to ‘Love Walked In’ (from ‘Backstreet Symphony’). While very much a tried-and-tested formula, it represents one of the things Thunder were always best at.The slower rockers of ‘I’ll Be Waiting’ and ‘Preaching From a Chair’ feature Bowes’s strongest vocal performances (again tapping into his inner Paul Rodgers).‘Ball and Chain’, ‘River of Pain’ and ‘Stand Up’ are full-on punchy rockers, while ‘Till The Rivers Run Dry’ features a more acoustic, laid back band. ‘Future Train’ begins with an acoustic flourish, before developing into one of the album’s best hard rock workouts. It makes use of a swaggering guitar riff, which works excellently when coupled with fantastic harmony vocals on the chorus. Danny Bowes’s vocal is superb throughout.“Behind Closed Doors” really needs to be as fondly remembered as Thunder’s two preceding albums. It clearly represents a band at their absolute strongest.

THUNDER, celebrated as one of Britain’s most popular and enduring hard rock sensations, are releasing two previously unreleased live recordings through earMUSIC.“Live At Leeds” was recorded nine years later on 3rd March 2015, at Live Direct Arena in Leeds. The show was part of Thunder’s arena tour in support of ‘Wonder Days’ – a very meaningful tour that marked the first steps of public rehabilitation for Ben Matthews, the rhythm guitarist and keyboardist, who was recovering from throat cancer.Unsurprisingly, these shows were emotionally charged for both the band and the audience. This 16-song set delivers a hatful of hits and no less than six numbers from ‘Wonder Days’, namely its title cut, ‘Black Water’, ‘Resurrection Day’, ‘Broken’, ‘The Thing I Want’ and ‘When The Music Played’.“Live At Leeds”, stand as evidence of Thunder’s prowess as live entertainers. And now at last you can re-live the experience.

THUNDER, celebrated as one of Britain’s most popular and enduring hard rock sensations, are releasing two previously unreleased live recordings through earMUSIC.“Live At Islington Academy” captures Thunder during the touring cycle of their eighth studio album, ‘Robert Johnson’s Tombstone’. The quintet had already completed a lengthy circuit of the UK in promotion of the record when they were contacted by Planet Rock Radio to perform at the station’s inaugural Christmas Bash on 19th December 2006.A mere 800 fans were fortunate enough to witness Thunder’s storming surprise performance that night, which was dominated by golden classics like ‘Backstreet Symphony’, ‘Love Walked In’, ‘I Love You More Than Rock’N’Roll’, ‘River Of Pain’, ‘Low Life In High Places’, followed by a hot, sweaty encore of the hit single ‘Dirty Love’.“Live At Islington Academy” stand as evidence of Thunder’s prowess as live entertainers. And now at last you can re-live the experience.
