Bio:

The British band known as Rage has no ties to the German melodic thrashers who emerged a few years later, but actually rose from the ashes of '70s hard rock also-rans Nutz in 1981. Having witnessed the promise of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal firsthand when their last Nutz composition, "Bootliggers," was featured in the very popular Metal for Muthas collection, but knowing their previous baggage marked them as members of a previous generation, singer Dave Lloyd, guitarist Mick Devonport, bassist Keith Mulholland, and drummer John Mylett hired second guitarist Terry Steers to beef up their sound and cleverly renamed themselves Rage.Initially, their new lease on life seemed to bear fruit, with their first album for French label Carrere, 1981's Out of Control, selling quite well and receiving healthy press accolades, including a "5-K" review from Kerrang! magazine. But their euphoria was short-lived, as subsequent efforts like 1982's Nice 'n' Dirty and 1983's Run for the Night saw a return to the underwhelming songwriting and indifferent fan response that had plagued Nutz throughout the 1970s. This ultimately led to Rage's ignominious and final breakup sometime in 1984. Mylett tragically died in a car crash later that year, but Lloyd moved forward into a new project called 2 A.M.

Album:

Rock Candy Records have 'Remastered & Reloaded' the 3 albums recorded by British '80s rockers RAGE, available for the first time on CD, and believe me, all worth your attention. Rage's first album was this hard rockin' "Out Of Control".Liverpool most famous export was, undeniably, The Beatles, a band that would become the UK’s most successful musical export. Of lesser impact of course, but much loved on the local scene, were '70s rock stalwarts Nutz, a band that reached a certain level of success but, ultimately, buckled under numerous financial and business pressures. However, the one great benefit of that demise was the subsequent birth of Rage, a unit fit for the emerging hard rock explosion being pioneered by the NWOBHM.Signed to the French based Carerre label, home of Saxon, Rose Tattoo and Dokken, Rage utilised the prevailing zeitgeist of the time, quickly establishing themselves as an influential part of the emerging British Hard Rock scene. Their debut album "Out Of Control", issued in 1981, was produced by man of the moment Pete Hinton (Saxon, Demon) giving the material a contemporary, rough-hewn sheen which garnered great critical reaction and laid the foundations for intensive live work. Musically, the songs focused on tight riffs and some memorable hard rock hooks, giving vocalist Dave Lloyd a platform to ably demonstrate his range and style. Look out also for some incredible guitar soloing from Mick Devonport, a man who during his previous tenure with Nutz, had obviously been hiding his talent under a bushel.Material such as ‘I Don’t Wanna Leave’, ‘Money’, ‘Out Of Control’ and ‘Roll The Dice’ perfectly demonstrates why they were seen as one of the UK’s brightest hopes. At the time of its release, the prestigious Kerrang! magazine give the album '5 K'.Thanks to Rock Candy, "Out Of Control" appears for the first time on CD, fully 24-bit remastered and including two bonus tracks, songs recorded when the band was still named Nutz.A Highly Recommended collectors piece.

Album:

Rock Candy Records have 'Remastered & Reloaded' the 3 albums by British '80s rockers RAGE, available for the first time on CD, and believe me, all worth your attention. "Nice 'N' Dirty" was their second effort, and arguably Rage's finest moment. Regarded as cult classic, this album rocks with muscle and melody.Liverpool's Rage were been born out of the ashes of well-respected '70s hard rock unit Nutz, a group who had released four well received albums for A&M Records. With relations cooling between the label, the band and their management, it was decided out of sheer frustration and political uncertainty, to cut off those associations and move on to pastures new, albeit under a different name. Re-branded as Rage, the band signed to enterprising independent label Carrere Records (home of Saxon, Rose Tattoo and Dokken) and began their fight back by releasing the album ‘Out Of Control’."Nice 'N' Dirty", originally issued in 1983, played to their strengths, showcasing a determined and rugged sound befitting the hard rock zeitgeist prevalent at the time. It also signalled the addition of second guitarist Terry ‘Tony’ Steers, helping to reinforce their more muscular approach.Perfectly produced by Peter Hinton, the album contains a number of impressive tracks, including the prophetic "American Radio Stations", the melodious "Wasted Years", and the quite commercial "Heartbreaker", with a sound thet would be developed later by Bronz. The riff driven of "Woman" has a style & sound later heard in Heavy Pettin', while anthemic "Long Way From Home" is pure, classic hard rock.Rage adds a bluesy touch to "Only Child" but still melodic, "Ready To Go" rocks with a pulse akin Mama's Boys, while "Blame It On The Night" is that kind of tracks you want into an action movie soundtrack.I still remember when I listened to death "American Radio Stations" alongside Survivor's Eye Of The Tiger, Foreigner's Juke Box Hero and songs in this vein when appeared at that time ('81-'83).My cassette copy is already worn-out since decades ago, so big thanks to Rock Candy as this reissue marks the first official appearance of "Nice 'N' Dirty" on CD.Fortunately, the original sapphic artwork cover to "Nice 'N' Dirty" featuring a pair of big-haired bimbos was respected in this Rock Candy reissue. In 1983, the international release of the LP was changed to a less racy cover with just one girl and some flashy effects (see above). As said, a cult classic from the early '80s British hard rock scene.

Line Up:

Dave Lloyd - lead vocals, guitar
Mick Devonport - guitars, backing vocals
Terry ‘Tony’ Steers - guitars
Keith Mulholland - bass
John Mylett - drums

01. American Radio Stations
02. Wasted Years
03. Woman
04. Heartbreaker
05. Silver And Gold
06. Long Way From Home
07. Only Child
08. Blame It On The Night
09. Wild Cat Woman
10. Ready To Go

Album:

Rock Candy Records have 'Remastered & Reloaded' the 3 albums by British '80s rockers RAGE, available for the first time on CD, and believe me, all worth your attention. "Run For The Night" was Rage's third and last record, and although their previous is considered the best, I have a soft spot for this one, the more melodic, AORish of the bunch.Signed to the fast rising independent label Carrere, Rage issued two well received albums before settling in to record their third album, this slightly more refined "Run For The Night", a record that would be the band’s bid to hitch their wagon to the more melodic, arguably AOR side of Rock genre. Indeed, Rage noticed the commercial & catchy sound of acts from the other side of the ocean, like Survivor and Foreigner, was the path to follow, still feeling unmistakable British.Self produced, for "Run For The Night" the band enlisted the help of fellow Liverpool songwriter Steve Morris of revered AOR rockers Export, to help with material. For the first time they also utilised well crafted keyboard support lending a bold sheen to their third and final album. From opener "Cry From A Hill" you'll know this is a 'different' Rage: an anthemic midtempo melodic rocker with lots of keys in the background.Next, "Fantasy" will remind you Aldo Nova and not only for the title but for its catchy chorus and that 'Canadian sound' which brings to mind Loverboy as well."Can't Say No" has some Urgent in it (featuring a great Steve Morris guest solo), the Americanized "Light Years" is absolutely Boston / Scholz, while "No Prisoners" (love the backing vocals) is not far from the first Export in terms of sound."LadyKiller" is killer indeed, driven by a monster guitar riff akin Coney Hatch and an overall feeling which made '80s AOR / hard so great. A highlight.Of course, with this Rage 'new' melodic rock approach also arrive the band's first (and last) ballad ever; the smooth title track plenty of nice atmospheres."Never Before" is totally Loverboy, then the band wraps the album with the hard rocker "Rock Fever" via a strong twin guitar attack in the vein of the band's second album."Run For The Night" is pretty unknown for Brit AOR / Melodic Rock fans & collectors, perhaps due to Rage's previous more hard rocking delivery. But this album is full of catchy melodies and sticky choruses in the best early '80s AOR tradition."Run For The Night" was always a hard to find piece because the label did not properly supported the recording, and only a first LP batch was pressed. You can note this lack of support (not strangely the band broke up soon) in the production sound; it should be alot better. This Rock Candy remaster tries to rescue a deeper low end & brilliance, and now it sounds much better (I heard the original and this is a true improvement). Additionally, this is the first official appearance of "Run For The Night" on CD.If you love any of the bands mentioned above, grab this one immediately. This Rage final album is a must for all classic AOR / Melodic Rock fans out there, especially from the first half of the '80s.
