Bio:

Poison is an American glam metal band that achieved great commercial success in the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. Poison has sold over 45 million records worldwide and have sold 15 million records in the United States alone. The band has also charted ten singles to the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, including six Top 10 singles and the Hot 100 number-one, "Every Rose Has Its Thorn".The band became icons of the 1980s MTV era and have had widespread commercial success. The band's breakthrough debut album, the multi-platinum Look What the Cat Dragged In, was released in 1986 and they hit their peak with the second album, Open Up and Say... Ahh!, which became the band's most successful album, being certified 5x platinum in the US. The popularity continued into the new decade with their third consecutive multi-platinum selling album, Flesh & Blood. In the 1990s following the release of the band's first live album, Swallow This Live, the band experienced some line up changes and the fall of Pop Metal with the grunge movement, but despite a drop in popularity the band's fourth studio album, Native Tongue, still achieved Gold status and the band's first compilation album, Poison's Greatest Hits: 1986–1996, went double platinum. In the 2000s, with the original line up back together, the band found new popularity after a successful greatest hits reunion tour in 1999. The band began the new decade with the release of the long awaited Crack a Smile... and More!, followed by the Power to the People album. The band toured almost every year to sold out stadiums and arenas. They released a brand new album, hollyweird, in 2002 and in 2006 the band celebrated their 20 year anniversary with The Best of Poison: 20 Years of Rock tour and album, which was certified Gold and marked Poison's return to the Billboard top 20 charts for the first time since 1993. Band members have released several solo albums and starred in successful reality TV shows. After 25 years, the band is still recording music and performing.Since their debut in 1986, they have released seven studio albums, four live albums, five compilation albums, and have issued 28 singles to radio. On March 1, Poison announced a 2011 Summer tour with Mötley Crüe and New York Dolls to celebrate Poison's 25th anniversary and Mötley Crüe's 30th Anniversary named the Glam-A-Geddon.Also for Poison's 25th Anniversary, 35 of the multi-platinum band's top hits and fan favorites have been gathered for "Poison - Double Dose: Ultimate Hits", a new career-spanning 2CD and digital collection to be released May 3, 2011 by Capitol/EMI.In 2012 Poison will once again tour with Def Leppard for the Rock of Ages Tour & joining them will be Lita Ford. Bret Michaels will also continue his "Get Your Rock On" solo tour (named after his latest single) to promote his newest upcoming solo album. "Jammin' with Friends" was released June 25, 2013 and charted at #13 on the Top Hard Rock Albums, #23 on the Top Independent Albums, #29 on the Top Rock Albums and #80 on The Billboard 200

Album:

A couple months ago we presented here the first batch of Universal Records Japan reissue campaign of various '80s Rock artists / albums from their back catalog on high quality SHM-CD, all remastered, with bonus tracks and with an affordable, reduced price.Among these artists is POISON, and their rutilant major debut "Look What The Cat Dragged In".When you look at the first Poison album you are immediately reminded of MTV at their peak and quickly remember just how flashy the Hard Rock genre had become. The year was 1986 and bands like Poison gave rise to what became labeled the 'Hair Metal' decade. This aspect of big hair rock and roll would be par for the course for many of the bands from the Los Angeles area.Poison was an MTV poster child and had five songs from this album in heavy rotation on the network. Their wild 'Glam' look and cartoon character antics made for some truly memorable videos.Singer Bret Michaels, guitarist C.C. DeVille, drummer Rikki Rocket and bassist Bobby Dall surely seemed to have the world in their grasp and almost single handedly increased the level of female interest in the Hard Rock genre. The formula on the album was simple and straight forward, it was about Rocking and it was about girls. Songs like "Talk Dirty To Me" and "I Want Action" played upon the bands not so subtle sexual innuendos and seemed to pave their way.Ballads like "I Wont Forget You" would show the band had a softer side and while this number was really good (with some AOR in it) it would not have the impact on the charts like the forthcoming power ballad Every Rose Has Its Thorn from their next album.Like old KISS or AC/DC and at the time Journey or Survivor, early Poison had a catchiness to it that made the chorus parts very easy to remember. You could not go to a Rock crowd filled bar back in the day without hearing them blasting from every jukebox. One of my personal favorites was always "Cry Tough" since it seemed to cite the necessary drive that made up every hard working musician of the day. This Japanese edition on SHM-CD sounds excellent with its bright remastering and an increased bass deep end. You also 3 bonus tracks including the single remixes of "I Want Action" and "I Won't Forget You" (I was looking for the latter for many years) and the recording of "Don't Mess Around With Jim" where Poison did a nice job from the original Jim Croce song.If you own the old vinyl or the flat original CD edition, then perhaps it's time you pass it along to some younger Rock fans to show them a particular point in time and then treat yourself to this remastered edition.

Bobby Dall – bass guitar

A couple months ago we presented here the first batch of Universal Records Japan reissue campaign of various '80s Rock artists / albums from their back catalog on high quality SHM-CD, all remastered, with bonus tracks and with an affordable, reduced price.Among these artists is POISON, and their second smash hit album "Open Up And Say...Ahh!"Poison's 1988 follow-up found the band a lot more polished and taking a better grasp of the genre they were slowly starting to command. The production on the second album was cleaner and stood out more thanks to Tom Werman (Twisted Sister, Mötley Crüe) expertise hands. Paul Stanley from Kiss (whose song Rock and Roll All Nite had been covered by Poison the year before) was originally selected to produce the record, but was unable to fulfill the role due to scheduling conflicts. The band also took to having bombastic shows by the look of them they were clearly pulling a lot of tricks out of the hat worn by legends and influences Kiss. The sound was also Kiss-like when it came down to tracks like "Nothin' But A Good Time". This second album also had a killer track in "Fallen Angel", whose companion video was just as memorable as it showed just how hard life in Hollywood could be for someone unprepared for what's out there in any big city. The big chorus of that track made this a big radio hit but nothing would top "Every Rose Has Its Thorn", the soft ballad becoming one of the bands biggest hits in their entire career (#1). MTV had a hand in "Open Up And Say...Ahh!" success as well, promoting the songs listed above as well as "Your Mama Don't Dance" (a Loggins & Messina cover) which was all over the place thanks to the video network. Much of the premise of the band was the same here but overall they were a little more seasoned by now which made it sound a whole lot better. The album peaked at #2 on the US Billboard 200, being denied the top spot by Bon Jovi's massively popular New Jersey album, Guns N' Roses' debut record, Appetite for Destruction and Def Leppard's most successful album, Hysteria. This Japanese edition on SHM-CD sounds excellent with its bright remastering and strong bass presence. The bonus tracks on this release include the knock down rocking song "Living For The Minute", and "World Premiere Interview", a 10 minute interview segment. It's nice to give people that but on a remastered CD it's more about showcasing unreleased music and demos more than discussions from the time. Anyway, it's pretty interesting.

07. Fallen Angel
08. Every Rose Has Its Thorn
09. Your Mama Don't Dance

Album:

A couple months ago we presented here the first batch of Universal Records Japan reissue campaign of various '80s Rock artists / albums from their back catalog on high quality SHM-CD, all remastered, with bonus tracks and with an affordable, reduced price.Among these artists is POISON, and their multi-Platinum third album "Flesh & Blood" featuring 2 bonus tracks. After the glammy, hair metal party of the band's two previous efforts, "Flesh & Blood" was Poison's 'get serious' album, and one of the strongest of their career. The idea was to write and record more mature music and lyrics, something that guitarist C.C. DeVille was opposed to. He saw nothing wrong with the glam-slam-king-of-noize direction that they started on, and maintained that Look What the Cat Dragged In was their high point. He saw the introduction of more classic hard rock blues influences as diluting the Poison sound he liked. However, "Flesh & Blood" is the best thing C.C. has done, and ultimately he was very happy with the result.Take the opening track “Valley of Lost Souls” for example (preceded by intro called “Strange Days of Uncle Jack”). “Valley” rocks heavy with integrity and an edge that Poison hadn’t displayed before, and C.C. throws in a lot of tasty, toffee-like strings. His soloing will never be considered virtuoso and his tone has always been straight to the point, but never has C.C. generated such guitar thrills as he does on this album.I'm sure that producer Bruce Fairbairn steered this ship with a firm hand. His stamp is all over "Flesh & Blood": from weird segues to rich backing vocals, this is a Fairbairn production through and through. Fairbairn was known to be a taskmaster, and I’m sure he worked C.C. (and the whole band) to the bone. The title track, “(Flesh & Blood) Sacrifice” has his patented, perfectly arranged vocal stamp. The vocals are layered and almost Leppard-lush. This is the second excellent song in a row, so say what you like about Poison as performers, but they wrote some darn good songs too. Then you have the smash hit "Unskinny Bop", the pop metal staple in any strip club around the world to this day.“Let It Play” is simple but memorably melodic, then arrives another favorite of mine: the timeless sounding midtempo “Life Goes On”. I loved this bombastic electric semi power ballad then, and I still do now. A classic. Then, the fun party side of Poison remained intact on the album with “Ride the Wind”, a no-brainer. This track sounds like its title, like a 'driving a car' song, a rock and roll ode to the thrills of the road. I’d rank this easily among Poison’s best hits - top five. Another terrific cut is “Something to Believe In”, also a successful single / video. Bret Michaels wrote some pretty good lyrics here (about his best friend who died “in some Palm Springs hotel room”). Really heartfelt, and another Poison's best tunes ever.We have a new highlight with “Life Loves a Tragedy”, this song shoulda woulda coulda been a hit. The soft intro fools you into thinking it’s a ballad. It’s not but a ballsy rocker with another Bret Michaels lyric that you’d call more mature: “My vices have turned to habits, and my habits have turned to stone,” sings Bret. “I gotta stop living at a pace that kills, ‘fore I wake up dead.” Not poetry really, but really authentic. The chorus kills, as does the whole song. Another top five Poison track in my book. This fresh Japanese edition on SHM-CD sounds excellent, and I think the remaster has given much more punch to "Flesh & Blood".We have two bonus tracks; one is an acoustic version of “Something to Believe In” from the Life Goes On single B-side. It has new lyrics and C.C. adding nylon guitar melodies over the acoustic background. Nice version.Lastly there’s “God Save the Queen”, an instrumental variation of the Sex Pistols song turned 'sleazy' with hard rocking riffs and smashing drumming. Cool.

Line Up:

Bret Michaels - vocals, guitars
C.C. DeVille - lead guitar
Bobby Dall - bass, piano on Something to Believe In
Rikki Rockett - drums

with:

John Webster - keyboards
Paul Laine (Danger Danger), Marc LaFrance - backing vocals

Tracklist:

01. Strange Days Of Uncle Jack
02. Valley Of Lost Souls
03. (Flesh & Blood) Sacrifice
04. Swampjuice (Soul-O)
05. Unskinny Bop
06. Let It Play
07. Life Goes On
08. Come Hell Or High Water
09. Ride The Wind
10. Don't Give Up An Inch
11. Something To Believe In
12. Ball And Chain
13. Life Loves A Tragedy
14. Poor Boy Blues
15. Something To Believe In (Acoustic Version) (Bonus Track)
16. God Save The Queen (Demo) (Bonus Track)

"Jammin' with Friends" was released June 25, 2013 and charted at #13 on the Top Hard Rock Albums, #23 on the Top Independent Albums, #29 on the Top Rock Albums and #80 on The Billboard 200.

Album:

Universal Music Japan has started this year a curious but more than welcomed campaign: the reissue of long time out of print albums from their catalog titled 'HR/HM 1000', that meaning Hard Rock / Heavy Metal at the price of 1000 Yen = about 9,5 USD.And it's curious because these series focus on the 'commercially less successful' albums from each band, which, anyway, were long time out of print. In the case of POISON's "Native Tongue", the album was quite successful achieving gold status, but of course not platinum as their previous hit makers. However, "Native Tongue" must be Poison's most creative effort, including in their ranks talented guitarist Richie Kotzen.Kotzen was hired as the band's guitarist following the firing of C.C. DeVille in late 1991. Admitted as a full-fledged member rather than a "hired gun", Kotzen was given considerable creative freedom.Resultingly, Kotzen's writing and performing contributions dominated the album, hence, its quality.By 1992, with the ever so depressing grunge rock being so popular, our beloved ’80s bands had to reinvent themselves. Maybe make more serious music. It really made these bands into better musicians. It showed their versatility. With Kotzen in the fold, Poison became a bluesier rocking version of themselves. The songs were more diverse with great changes and depth. After the title track intro, as the band goes into “The Scream” it’s obvious right from the start of the album that this is truly a different band. Producer Richie Zito has done a great job of capturing a great drum sound. To me on this album Rikki Rockett really started to shine. In the past he was more of a show drummer, but on Native Tongue he really shows his ability. The album’s first single “Stand” is the more commercial tune on the CD, with great guitars, fine vocals and a full choir in the background.“Stay Alive” is a great rocker, has such a cool vibe, driven by Kotzen’s superb guitar riff. The laid back feel of the song allows Michaels‘ vocals, mixed with Kotzen‘s great harmony vocal parts to be heard perfectly. The vocal in the mid section have a classic Aerosmith type feel.“Until You Suffer Some (Fire & Ice)” is a really good slow bluesy rock ballad of sorts. What I love about this song is Kotzen’s harmonies that are heard throughout. The mixture of the two vocals really adds to the song. The chemistry of the two is undeniable.“Body Talk” keeps this train moving. Kotzen starts with a dirty riff that Dall plays off of on the bass, which leads into Michaels smooth vocal approach. Michaels really evolved on this album. There were moments on Flesh & Blood where you could hear him getting slightly bluesier. On this one, he changes his style to fit the song.“Bring It Home” is one of my favorite tracks on this album. I absolutely love the vocal approach in the verse with Micheals owning the part with the band stopping and starting. Where this song really shines is Kotzen singing the chorus and Michaels singing “Bring It Home” back to him. A dynamic of Poison that has never been seen again.“7 Days Over You” has an infectious chorus, “Richie’s Acoustic Thang” is a slight interlude that leads into another great track, “Ain’t That The Truth” a grooving rocker where the swagger that Michaels imprints really gives the song a great flavor.“Strike Up The Band” is another fantastic bluesy hard rocker. This is Poison in 1993. It’s still an anthem, but in a different, mature manner."Native Tongue" is mature Poison, and a really good bluesy hard rocking album with melody. At the time, Kotzen was probably exactly what Poison was seeking as they had gradually moved away from their glam metal beginnings and sought to be more musically accepted. This reissue is not remastered, but this Japanese 2018 release sounds fantastic. It may be the new digital transfer technique - which augment the signal / Dynamic Range - so having this for less than ten bucks is a great deal.

And More!", the fifth studio album from POISON featuring crazy guitarist Blues Saraceno, contains the original 12 album tracks, two studio outtakes, one unnamed demo, "Face the Hangman" (previously released only as a b-side on European singles for "Every Rose Has Its Thorn"), and four songs from MTV Unplugged.Saraceno was given considerable creative freedom and his writing and performing contributions dominated the album. "Shut Up, Make Love", which is the first single presented to radio stations, is a raunchy party anthem."Be the One" (second promo single) and "Lay Your Body Down" are classic power ballads. "Best Thing You Ever Had" brings harmonica and piano to the forefront, while guitarist Blues Saraceno lives up to his name on "Mr. Smiley" and "That's the Way I Like It."The band goes all-out punk/sleaze on "Doin' as I Seen on My TV," returning to vintage Poison on "Sexual Thing," and "Baby Gets Around a Bit". It also delivers an inebriated version of Dr. Hook's "Cover of the Rolling Stone. While using the last mastering available of this album, this Japanese 2018 release sounds fantastic. It may be the new digital transfer technique - which augment the signal / Dynamic Range - and "Crack a Smile... And More!" blast out of the speakers.
