Bio:

Quiet Riot is an American heavy metal band, best known for their hit singles "Metal Health" and "Cum on Feel the Noize". The band was founded in 1973 by guitarist Randy Rhoads and bassist Kelly Garni under the original name Mach 1, before changing the name to Little Women and finally Quiet Riot in May 1975. The band's name was inspired by a conversation with Rick Parfitt of the British band Status Quo, in which Parfitt said he'd like to name a band "Quite Right",and his thick English accent made it sound like he was saying "Quiet Riot".The band is ranked at No. 100 on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock".The original line-up featured Rhoads and Garni with lead vocalist Kevin DuBrow and drummer Drew Forsyth. Their most commercially successful lineup consisted of DuBrow alongside guitarist Carlos Cavazo, bassist Rudy Sarzo and drummer Frankie Banali, and in 1983 released their breakthrough album Metal Health, which is known for being the first heavy metal album to top the Billboard album chart. Despite several lineup changes and brief breakups, Quiet Riot continued to record and tour until DuBrow's death from an accidental cocaine overdose in 2007.Banali revived the band in 2010, and the current lineup consists of himself on drums, lead vocalist Jizzy Pearl, bassist Chuck Wright and guitarist Alex Grossi.

Album:

Rock Candy Records have remastered all the '80s recorded Quiet Riot albums some time ago, and as repeatedly requested, we will present all of them here on this blog."QR III" is, as the name suggests, Quiet Riot’s third album (originally released in 1986) and showcases some major changes, not only musically but also on the personnel front; bassist Rudy Sarzo was replaced by Chuck Wright (from Giuffria).Showcasing a far more mature sound, the band introduced keyboards and featured songwriting that suggested that they had finally come of age, relying less on simplistic shout-it-out-loud hooks and more on multiple layers of rich melody with impressive muscle. The arrangements were mature without giving way to syrupy lullabies or saccharin ballads."QR III" it's Quiet Riot's most 'pop metal' album, plenty of catchy melodic lines featuring more keyboards and de-emphasizing the guitar a little bit.The whole first half of this disc is incredible, especially "The Wild & the Young" and "Twilight Hotel", while Chuck Wright's bass solo "Bass Case" is phenomenal.Simply put, if you like mid-Eighties Melodic Rock with FM radio AOR touches, "QR III" is a must.Sadly, the band’s fortunes, through no fault of their own, continued to spiral out of control, resulting in an album that was critically lauded as their best work but one that in purely commercial terms sadly underachieved. In the end, internal unrest resulted in flamboyant front man Kevin Dubrow being asked to leave the band – for many an unthinkable development – signaling the end of a once great institution.Very good remaster by Rock Candy.

Album:

QR (also known as Quiet Riot or Quiet Riot IV ) is the sixth studio album released in 1988 by the American heavy metal band Quiet Riot. The album featured a major line-up change.Singer and founding member Kevin Dubrow had been fired before the recording sessions began, and replaced by Rough Cutt vocalist Paul Shortino. The band had fired DuBrow mainly because of comments he was making to the metal press about Quiet Riot's supposed superiority over other bands, which strained friendships that members of Quiet Riot had with those bands.Shortino's hiring wasn't the only line-up change, as Chuck Wright had quit the band and was replaced by Sean McNabb. This left the album with the distinction of being the only Quiet Riot release without DuBrow on vocals, or any other original members.Reaction to the album at the time was tepid, but did manage to attract a bit more interest than the previous album. However, the only major single spawned from the album, "Stay with Me Tonight" made a small dent in the pop charts, but nothing comparable to the impact that previous albums had.The album also featured studio musicians Jimmy Waldo (keyboards) and Jimmy Johnson, who played bass on "Stay with Me Tonight" and "Coppin' a Feel".The album was produced by Spencer Proffer, who had produced every Quiet Riot U.S. released album up to this point.Paul Shortino and Sean McNabb later played together on Rough Cutt's Sneak Peek EP.The album was remastered on CD in 2010 by Jon Astley.

Album:

Metal Health is the third studio album by American heavy metal band Quiet Riot. It was released on March 11, 1983, bolstered by the #5 hit "Cum on Feel the Noize" and the #31 hit "Metal Health". Metal Health is notable for being the first heavy metal album to reach the #1 spot on the Billboard 200. It knocked The Police's Synchronicity out of #1 in the US. The album went on to sell more than six million copies and is considered a classic among heavy metal fans. Some critics, such as Allmusic, describe it as a one-hit wonder, owing to Quiet Riot's relative lack of critical and commercial success with following albums (and subsequent disintegration) towards the end of the 1980s. The title track was ranked #35 on VH1's 40 Greatest Metal Songs. The band went on a tour the same year and supported Black Sabbath on their Born Again tour in the US."Slick Black Cadillac" is a re-recorded version of the same song from Quiet Riot II.The song "Thunderbird" is dedicated to guitarist and founding member Randy Rhoads. Although the bulk of the song was written for Rhoads while he was still alive, Kevin DuBrow added one final verse as a tribute to Rhoads after he died in a plane crash on March 19, 1982.The title track is known by a number of slightly different names. It was simply called "Metal Health" on the original vinyl release, but most subsequent reissues of the album on other formats call it "Bang Your Head", with the phrase 'Metal Health' in parentheses, either before or after the "main" title.

Album:

Met Kevin Back In The 80s, Sad That He's Gone Now. Still A Good Glam Rock Band! I LOVE this! First off - sometimes the downloads sound terrible, I hate getting burned like that. Happens a lot with older cds and artists. This sounds GREAT, nice and loud and clear. And the collection of songs is excellent - I can think of like two songs I wish were on here, and that's good for any greatest hits compilation. But this is an excellent collection of songs, arranged well, has a good flow, and it is LOUD like I like it. Kudos to the people who put together this greatest hits compilation.Kevin DuBrow's voice sounds great - so glad I got to see Quiet Riot in concert a couple times, but sad he is no longer with us. RIP Kevin.

Album:

Condition Critical is the fourth studio album by American heavy metal band Quiet Riot. Released in 1984, it was not nearly as successful as its predecessor (1983's Metal Health) in either fan reaction or sales. It was also given an infamous two-word review in Rolling Stone magazine: "Condition Terminal." However, it did sell over one million copies, peaking at No. 15 on the US Billboard album chart. Like the band's previous album, Condition Critical features a Slade cover song as the second track.Tracks "Party All Night" (also known as "Party All Nite") and "Mama Weer All Crazee Now" had music videos made for them, both receiving some airplay on TV. The same man with a metal face from the last album cover is on this cover as well as many of the band's subsequent album covers, establishing him as the band's mascot. The character also has cameos in both aforementioned music videos. The track "Stomp Your Hands, Clap Your Feet" shares its title with the original American title to Slade's 1974 album Old New Borrowed and Blue. As stated in the program Behind the Music, frontman DuBrow's nasty, combative attitude towards many music journalists as well as fellow heavy metal musicians – such as DuBrow labeling the magazine Hit Parader as akin to toilet paper – was felt by other band members and their producer to have hurt the album's reviews. DuBrow in later interviews has agreed and expressed regrets.Allmusic critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine gave Condition Critical a mixed-to-positive review, stating that he found the band's Slade cover to be the best track on the album given the "solid hook" of its guitar riffs. The album was not meeting the same level of sales as its predecessor, Metal Health, and the album received poor commercial success, 1/6th of sales. It reached the No. 15 slot on the Billboard 200.

Album:

Two days after announcing its release, Quiet Riot’s new album has been released digitally. The album, 10, comes off as an oddly arranged album- featuring six new studio tracks with current lead singer Jizzy Pearl and four live tracks featuring the late Kevin DuBrow. While many have criticized drummer Frankie Banali’s choice to reform Quiet Riot in 2010, some longtime fans might be surprised by 10.This reunited version of Quiet Riot has been together since 2010. The band currently consists of singer Jizzy Pearl, guitarist Alex Grossi, bassist Chuck Wright and drummer Frankie Banali. Of the four members, casual fans might only be familiar with Banali as he is the only member of the Metal Health line-up in the band. Wright has been in and out of the band since before the classic line-up while Grossi joined in 2005. These three musicians were in the last line-up of Quiet Riot before singer Kevin DuBrow’s death in 2007. DuBrow once stated that this was his favorite version of Quiet Riot to play with, which is the reason why Banali decided to reform the new version of the band with Grossi and Wright. Since 2010, the band has been through two different lead singers: Mark Huff (2010-2012) and Scott Vodkun (2012-2013). The band’s current singer is Jizzy Pearl, formerly of Love/Hate and Ratt. The first six tracks on the album are all new songs featuring Pearl on vocals. The first of them, “Rock In Peace,” is a simple Zeppelin-esque rocker. Pearl’s vocals are remarkable similar to DuBrow’s. The lyrics make references to previous Quiet Riot songs, using the “Well now you’re here, there’s no way back” line from “Metal Health” in the chorus. “Bang for Your Buck” is a bouncy sounding track while “Back on You” is a crunchy fast-paced rocker. Both songs utilize vocal harmony sections, which brings back memories of the band’s albums made in the 1980s. Of the new tracks, “Backside of Water” and “Band Down” are weakest ones of the bunch. While they aren’t bad songs, nothing sticks out as different although Grossi’s solo on the latter is impressive. Grossi continues to show off his skills on the last of the studio tracks, “Dogbone Alley.”The last four tracks on the album are live cuts, featuring the late great Kevin DuBrow on lead vocals. These live tracks are from some of the last shows that DuBrow would ever play in his life. Banali made a wise choice in not picking live performances of the band’s hits. Instead, we have an eclectic bunch of tunes. “Put Up or Shut Up,” a cut from QR III, is more enjoyable live than in the studio. “Free” and “South of Heaven” from 2006’s Rehab are also featured on here. While Kevin’s vocals are sensational, the quality of the live recording could have been better (though this is probably the best we’re going to get). The album ends with a medley of British blues rock tunes, ranging from Humble Pie, the Jeff Beck Group and Led Zeppelin.Overall, 10 is a fun album to listen to. I’m quite surprised at how this turned out. I think fans who are skeptical about this new line-up should at least give it a listen. If the band ever did want to record a full-length studio album with Pearl, I’d be all for it.

Album:

Quiet Riot continues their historic journey in 2017 with their new album, “Road Rage”. Led by drummer Frankie Banali, who is joined by veteran bassist Chuck Wright (who has been in and out of the band since 1982), guitarist Alex Grossi (who has been in the band since 2004) and new vocalist James Durbin, the band continues to be an unstoppable force in the rock 'n' roll world.“The recordings for the new “Road Rage” record have been an incredible musical journey in the storied history of Quiet Riot. I asked vocalist James Durbin to fill the very large shoes of the late great Kevin DuBrow, because I knew he could. While no one can ever replace Kevin DuBrow, he has the same spirit and drive that Kevin had. James is an amazing live performer with an insane vocal range, but he is also a very gifted songwriter and brought to the "Road Rage” record totally unique original lyrics and melodies. Not only do they fit perfectly to the music we wrote, he took the songs to a completely new level. All the work that we have put into this record has been well worth the wait! I am extremely proud of guitarist Alex Grossi, bassist Chuck Wright and especially James Durbin for the work we have created on this record. Quiet Riot continues to tour relentlessly and will be on the road throughout the year. Expect to hear your Quiet Riot favourites as well as new songs from “Road Rage” at our shows", exclaims Frankie Banali.New frontman James Durbin comments on joining the band and his work on “Road Rage”: “The crown-jewel, on top of joining one of my favourite bands, has to be writing, recording and releasing a new album. No matter what, I'm now a part of that band’s history and I’m honored to have had the opportunity to do that with Quiet Riot. I spent just over 3 weeks marathon writing brand-new lyrics and melodies for every song and recording vocals. I’m extremely proud of the 'Road Rage' record, not only that I had the band’s support and trust to deliver, or how great of a personal accomplishment and blessing it’s been, but that we can keep the Quiet Riot freak flag flying and have the chance to inspire a new generation of fans!”“Road Rage” was originally scheduled for release in the spring of 2017, but with the injection of new-found energy for the band with the addition of American Idol alumni James Durbin in the vocalist slot, the band decided to scrap the original sessions and record a new version of the album with the new and improved line-up. The results are everything Quiet Riot fans could have hoped for! “Road Rage” is set for release August 4, 2017 via Frontiers Records.

Album:

QUIET RIOT's performance at Frontiers Rock Festival 2018 marked the band's first-ever concert in Italy. This special event is now being released on CD/DVD and Blu-ray titled "One Night In Milan".Seems Quiet Riot were eager to bring the party to Frontiers Rock Festival. With such a monumental occasion it only seemed fitting to record the entire show and bring us as an album. This is the latest installment from the band since their 2017 release of Road Rage, which was new material.Despite the 35 years in the business, the band still know how to pull in a crowd and perform."One Night In Milan" is a fantastic insight into the kind of performance this band is capable of. From the beginning of the album and set, the band are ready to throw themselves into the performance and frontman James Durbin is even more ready to provide all he can for the fans. His crowd interaction heard on the album shows that he is all about engaging with the crowd and letting them be apart of the experience. His vocals are outstanding as well as he never falters throughout and is able to keep that momentum throughout. The rest of the band keep up with him and show just how tight they are as a unit. Performing a range of greatest hits from “Whatever It Takes” to newer tracks such as “Freak Flag”, they manage to cover just about everything a fan could wish for.The special treat however comes from the band performing “Thunderbird” for the very first time live. With the song comes the touching story of the meaning behind it and the dedication to the late Randy Rhoads.Closing the show there's the classics “Cum on Feel The Noize” and “Metal Health”, carrying the live performance to its climax. This live album make you wish you’d been at this show, and it takes you there in spades.

Album:

Quiet Riot burst onto the rock scene back in 1983 with their breakthrough album, ‘Metal Health’ which became the first heavy metal album to top the Billboard album chart and included their cover version of the Slade classic ‘Cum On Feel The Noize’.The intervening years have not been plain sailing for the band as the death of former members, internal fighting and numerous line up changes have taken their toll and left us with only 11 studio albums to show for the past 36 years. The latest line up includes founding member and drummer Frankie Banali and veteran bassist Chuck Wright, who are joined by Alex Grossi on guitars and James Durbin on vocals. Durbin has left the band since recording the album and been replaced by former vocalist Jizzy Pearl, so the changes keep coming.‘Hollywood Cowboys’ finds us in familiar territory with a thumping heavy metal album that opens with ‘Don’t Call It Love’, an anthemic chunk of rock with grinding guitar riffs and the sound of a band rolling back the years. ‘In The Blood’, ‘Heartbreak City’ and ‘The Devil That You Know’ continue in the same vein, the latter allowing Durbin to show off his vocal range and give the fans what they have become used to from Quiet Riot over the years.‘Change Or Die’ is a powerhouse of a track with the whole band rocking’ out and once again Durbin’s voice soars, but with a gritty edge that works really well. ‘Roll On’ sees us at the halfway mark of the album and we slow down with a really bluesy, earthy track that sees the band in a more melancholy mood but still nailing it. The calm doesn’t last long though and the band are soon back to their rocking best with my favourite track on the album, ‘Insanity’ which allows Alex Grossi to cut loose and give us a blistering guitar attack, be that the grinding background or the searing solos and he is ably assisted by the whole band here, who sound like they are really enjoying this one.‘Hellbender’ is full of chugging riffs that carry the listener along as it slowly seeps into your brain before ‘Wild Horses’ which never reaches the heady heights of some of those tracks that have gone before. A short acoustic intro takes us into ‘ Holding On’ with Durbin and Grossi duelling throughout with Durbin giving us a superb rock vocal while Grossi is again let loose with a scorching guitar solo.We are then into the final two tracks of the album ‘Last Outcast’ and ‘Arrows And Angels’, which pick up the pace once again and bring proceedings to a thumping conclusion. With so many line up changes over the years, it’s almost impossible to say what a Quiet Riot album should sound like and for that reason, opinion will be divided on whether this hits the spot or not, but as a standalone rock album, this works. I liked it in places and loved it in others and it would be great to see the band build on this release. With the return of Jizzy Pearl and Frankie Banali’s ongoing heath issues, we will wait to see.

Album:

QUIET RIOT’s discography is a very particular case, because the band’s first two albums, their self-titled debut from 1977 and “Quiet Riot II” from 1978, were only released in Japan. For the western world, the first album was “Metal health” from 1983, already with another formation, which was a commercial success with hits like “Cum on feel the noize”. But before there were also those works, which are important for the history of Quiet Riot and where the impressive talent of Randy Rhoads was first exposed to the world.”Quiet Riot I & II” never were officially released on CD, and specialized label No Remorse Records had been working closely on the reissues for years, exchanging many emails and conversations with Frankie Banali, who believed that these albums are very important in Quiet Riot’s legacy as they paved the way for the band’s reformation and world-wide success.Banali’s passing in August 2020 put things on hold for a while, but No Remorse has finalized the final details with Banali’s estate, and long-awaited reissues of early Quiet Riot albums are finally available remastered, properly silver pressed. Now we have here ”Quiet Riot I” in all its sonic glory, and including 3 collectible, rare bonus tracks.Quiet Riot is a phenomenon with a long history. The first incarnation of the band dates back to 1975, when the Quiet Riot name was born, with the line-up of guitarist Randy Rhoads, vocalist Kevin DuBrow, bassist Kelly Garni, and drummer Drew Forsyth.Despite local popularity in Los Angeles, California, they failed to secure a record deal in the United States, but managed to release an EP, now a collectors item. The first two albums, Quiet Riot I and Quiet Riot II, were originally released in Japan, only on vinyl.Of course, on their debut “Quiet Riot I”, the band is a different beast than later became in 1983.We hear a ‘young Kevin DuBrow’ here in good ol’ 1977 style. It’s just before his vocals seemed so amplified and energetic on the band’s third release. They are still the high pitched, raspy output vocals that we hear from DuBrow on the albums in the ’80s but less ‘shouty’. At the time DuBrow focused much more on melody and hitting the notes naturallyWhere most fans would compare this album to the likes of early Twisted Sister or even the very first Dokken, this record has such a different approach, and I would compare it more to bands like Scorpions, Budgie or Ted Nugent. In other words, the more calm and melodic vocal work mixed with less intensified instrumentation gives it that really early metal sound.Along with the vocals, the song structures are late Seventies style. Nothing on here gets repetitive at all, nor sounds cheesy. Every song sounds like it took some time to write, and wasn’t written by a group of people working for a record company. The best tracks are by far the beginning and the end ones, that being “It’s Not So Funny” (released as a single), and “Demolition Derby”. While still having a catchy beat and positive vibe, they cease to have any pop influence and keep the listener interested by every means. Now, this band has always been notorious for covers, especially by Slade as everyone knows. But here, they covered Small Faces and The Dave Clark Five, with ’70s metal twists, and rather making the covers a hit, it just helped add to the magnificent substance of the album.Other standout tracks are the riffy “Mommy’s Little Angels” (though lyrics are laughable) and “Get Your Kicks”. But not one track leaves you disappointed. If Randy Rhoads is on guitar, then it’s a given that it’s going to be good. His riff work flows perfectly and keeps an exceptional pace as he chugs along with DuBrow’s vocals, with no hard edge needed to make it sound well. Although he may not have reached the complexity in his career with Ozzy, it’s still magnificent. For this kind of music, I hardly even think that’s necessary. His solos are less shredding and more melody to overlay the drum and basslines. Although there still is shredding, my favorite guitar piece here is the solo on “Get Your Kicks”, as it’s more calm and melodic rather all over the board shredding. While production on “Quiet Riot I” isn’t big budget, the bass is very audible and has some ingenious lines that would die out after the sophomore release. You can really feel it if you play it on big speakers, and it’s the greatest way to back up the guitar work. The drums aren’t nearly as hard and ferocious as one would expect, but as I keep saying, that’s not needed for this kind of music.Following the release of the second album, Randy Rhoads joined Ozzy Osbourne’s band and Quiet Riot ended. Although the worldwide mega-hit Quiet Riot is technically a different band than these tracks, Kevin DuBrow’s roots in his budding musical awakening, as well as Randy Rhoads, one of the world’s most talented guitarists, can be traced here. When Frankie Banali and Rudy Sarzo, who played together before this in bands in Florida and Illinois, would go on to form an entirely new band with Kevin DuBrow and Carlos Cavazo, they created a sound that kick-started the pop-metal era.‘Metal Health’ also includes a new version of the song “Slick Black Cadillac”, originally released on Quiet Riot II, but with the huge success of Metal Health, the early days became a thing of the past.Still, fans and collectors for years clamored for those albums to be widely reissued at last.

Line-Up:

Kevin DuBrow – lead vocals
Randy Rhoads – lead & rhythm guitars
Kelly Garni – bass guitar
Drew Forsyth – drums

02. Mama’s Little Angels

The first two albums, Quiet Riot I and Quiet Riot II, were originally released in Japan, only on vinyl.”Quiet Riot II” is nothing shy of a continuation of the very first album, as the songs structure, style, line-up, and overall sound and production is basically the same. It’s just as if they decided to churn out nine more very good tracks to top off their underground career before ‘Metal Health’ would take over the metal scene.A main difference that this album has against ‘QR I’ is the fact that the pace is slowed down a noticeable amount. While the predecessor took a fast and fun kind of approach, these songs are rather more melodic, commercial glammy sounding. They are also significantly longer, which allows for more guitar work by Randy Rhoads. All of the tracks make for an enjoyable listen, just like the first one, and are just as underrated.Let’s talk about a famous one, “Slick Black Cadillac”. As many know, this appears as track four on the next album, but that was actually a re-recording. Here, it’s not as amplified, but it’s more laid back and the vocal work is more melodic. Not to mention that the chorus sounds better, and they add a little intro to this one. This one is one of my favorite tracks, as well as “Eye For An Eye” as it carries a very steady beat and displays great riffage and vocal work.“Inside You” is also pretty good, and if you listen closely, the main riff sounds like “Wild Thing” by The Troggs. “Afterglow (Of Your Love)” is a fun Small Faces cover and other highlights include “Trouble”, and “We’ve Got the Magic”. By this second album, Quiet Riot had gotten better at writing melodies.Something else that this record seemed to incorporate a little more is the gang vocals. Those were hardly used before, but on here it was introduced a little more. As most know, Quiet Riot would eventually use this as a signature sound of theirs. This was where it was tampered with some more and was heavily used more years down the road. The overall sound on ”Quiet Riot II” should vanish from the band’s career and they would never release anything like this one again.Following the release of this second album, Randy Rhoads joined Ozzy Osbourne’s band and Quiet Riot ended. Although the worldwide mega-hit Quiet Riot is technically a different band than these tracks, Kevin DuBrow’s roots in his budding musical awakening, as well as Randy Rhoads, one of the world’s most talented guitarists, can be traced here. When Frankie Banali and Rudy Sarzo, who played together before this in bands in Florida and Illinois, would go on to form an entirely new band with Kevin DuBrow and Carlos Cavazo, they created a sound that kick-started the pop-metal era.‘Metal Health’ also includes a new version of the song “Slick Black Cadillac”, originally released here on Quiet Riot II, but with the huge success of Metal Health, the early days became a thing of the past.
