Info:

Bad English was an American/British hard rock supergroup formed in 1987, reuniting keyboardist Jonathan Cain from Journey with singer John Waite and bassist Ricky Phillips, his former bandmates in The Babys. The members decided on a name for the band while playing pool. John Waite missed a shot and Jonathan Cain made a comment on how bad his "english" was (referring to the spin a player puts on the cue ball) and the band decided to use the phrase. The name is also thought to be a reference to The Babys, since the name was misspelled and an example of bad English.Jonathan Cain and guitarist Neal Schon, who had enjoyed enormous success in Journey, formed Bad English with Waite after Journey disbanded. The first album, eponymously titled, was a big seller containing three hit singles: the number one hit "When I See You Smile" written by Diane Warren, the top 10 hit "Price of Love," and "Possession." Another track from the debut album, "Best of What I Got", was featured in the soundtrack to the 1989 feature film Tango and Cash. The band's second album, Backlash (1991), came and went without any fanfare. The only single, "Straight To Your Heart," just missed the Top 40, peaking at No. 42. Ricky Phillips writes on his website that the group had parted company before the second album had been mixed. Both Phillips and guitarist Neal Schon expressed frustration with the "pop" side of the band's songs and wanted a harder edge. In the end, it proved to be the band's undoing as everyone left to pursue other projects. In later interviews Waite revealed that although he loved playing to stadium-sized audiences, he was uncomfortable with the corporate rock image that he felt the band had presented and has been a solo artist ever since.Bad English drummer Deen Castronovo later went on to join a reformed Journey with singer Steve Augeri, Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, and Ross Valory. He also played on Ozzy Osbourne's album Ozzmosis in 1995.

Album:

Bad English is the self-titled platinum-selling debut album by American rock supergroup Bad English, released in 1989.The band scored two huge hits on the Billboard charts including the No. 1 hit "When I See You Smile" and No. 5 hit "Price of Love". In all, five singles were officially released from the album, all charting on the Hot 100.First single "Forget Me Not" was a major hit at rock radio, spending two weeks at No. 2 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, but it narrowly failed to hit the pop Top 40. The second single was the Diane Warren-penned power ballad "When I See You Smile", which was a massive multiformat hit, spending two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, two weeks in the top 10 at rock radio, and getting significant and sustained play at Adult Contemporary radio. But "When I See You Smile" lingered in the pop Top 40 and was still climbing the Adult Contemporary charts, and close to being certified Gold, long after the song had peaked at rock radio. When the decision was made to release a second consecutive power ballad as the album's third single ("Price of Love"), the band released the stomper "Best of What I Got" as a promo to U.S. rock radio, hoping to maintain interest and credibility with the rock audience for their live headlining tour. The plan worked, as "Price of Love" hit the pop top five but did not receive enough rock radio airplay to hit the 40-place Rock Tracks chart, while "Best of What I Got" surged to No. 9 there (the band's second-highest showing on that chart), and the band was invited to join the Whitesnake tour beginning in the spring for a second jaunt around the U.S.A five-video collection was released, containing the music videos for "Best of What I Got", "Heaven Is a 4 Letter Word", "Forget Me Not", "When I See You Smile", and "Price of Love".

Album:

Backlash, is the second and final studio album by American AOR supergroup Bad English, released in 1991.Bad English may have been an artificial construction, as are all supergroups, but it had worked the first time around and there didn't seem to be any reason to think it wouldn't again. Nevertheless, Backlash was a major disappointment: after scoring three Top 40 hits with its debut, the group managed only a paltry number 42 for this album's sole singles chart entry, "Straight to Your Heart," a Journey-like arena rock number. With that, the album topped out at number 72 and didn't even go gold, and these boys weren't accustomed to that, so they bailed. Which says something about the band's musical necessity (or lack thereof) that is only confirmed by listening to the soulless, mechanical rock-by-the-numbers that fills this record.

Album:

Amazing collectžion best of hits !! Big classic from the AOR's best.Everything in this record is essential for melodic rock lovers.Interesting thing to say, the band split just after the release of their second album.Too much of a waste don't you think?Anyway they were more a project than a group, but the schon/cain/waite team produced some fine moments of rock music.Worths every penny, so try it ! The songs on this CD collection are some of their best, but actually, EVERY song from their two studio albums could be included here! They simply never recorded any filler tunes.Get this CD and discover what REAL music sounded like before the current era of the musical dark ages began. There is a good variety of songs : classic rock sounds, pop & beautiful ballads. Bryan Adams may generally be regarded by many as the king of ballads, but Bad English & John Waite are certainly worthwhile contenders to that title! CD has 12 solid tracks out of 14, prominent hits are, "When I See You Smile", "Straight To Your Heart", "Time Stood Still", "Time Alone With You" and "Possession". Certainly great music from this very underrated band, this CD is full of beautiful gems complimented by the wonderful lead vocals by the great John Waite! This CD compliments & completes well, John Waite's solo release, "The Complete John Waite Vol.1 : Falling Backwards". Both these works are a must for Bad English & John Waite fans! A highly recommended

Album:

BAD ENGLISH self-titled debut "Bad English" has been Remastered & Reloaded by Rock Candy Records including 2 bonus tracks. The last remastered version of this awesome album went out of print long time ago, so this fresh treatment - far superior - is more than welcomed for all AOR fans worldwide. There were many attempts at piecing together super-groups during the late '80s but few were as successful as Bad English, a project born from the mash-up of two hugely influential outfits, namely the Babys (John Waite, Ricky Philips) and Journey (Jonathan Cain, Neal Schon and, later, Deen Castronovo). Both groups had featured talent to die for, so anticipation was extremely high for this noble alliance.Fortunately, unlike similar collaborations, the results were spectacular, leaving no one in any doubt that Bad English had delivered a cornerstone record, one that is still revered to this day.Fronted by the stunning and instantly identifiable voice of John Waite, and ably supported by guitar firebrand Neal Schon, the album contains a brace of superior tracks that elevated the record to platinum status and beyond.Signed to Epic Records and produced by Richie Zito (Eddie Money, Cheap Trick, Heart) it boasted no less than five hit singles, including ‘Price Of Love’ and the chart topping #1 power ballad ‘When I See You Smile’.It was a record constructed with pin point accuracy crushing the competition by a country mile. Issued in June 1989, their commercial accomplishments belies the band’s true depth, a powerhouse melodic rock band laying down the law with grit and determination, as demonstrated on tracks like ‘Possession’, ‘Best Of What I Got’, ‘Forget Me Not’ and ‘Rockin’ Horse’; all scorching examples of a style and sound that has not diminished one jot over time. This Rock Candy remaster is great delivering a balanced dynamic range, pumping bass lines (try it with a good pair of headphones), sharper guitars, and the lead / harmony vocals sound huge. If you have the original release in some format, compare with this remaster and then tell me.Simply put, "Bad English" is one of the greatest AOR / Melodic Rock albums ever made, easily in my Top 50 of All Time.
