Bio:

Kiss was formed in New York in '72 by guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley (Stanley Eisen) and Gene Simmons (Gene Klein). The line-up was rounded out by drummer Peter Criss (Crisscoula), located through a Rolling Stone ad, and lead guitarist Ace Frehley (Paul Frehley), who answered an ad in the Village Voice. The band's cartoon image, kabuki makeup and 4th-of-July stageshow concept was in place from the start, and they began promoting their own hall shows in NYC. TV director Bill Aucoin saw them, became their manager, and secured a deal for them with Neil Bogart's Casablanca Records within two weeks. Three LPs were released in a year's time, but the live fourth LP, Alive! (1975) contained their first huge hit, "Rock And Roll All Nite." Until the early '80, Kiss was unstoppable, with two huge-selling Marvel Comics, a network TV movie and four simultaneously-released solo albums under their studded belts. In '80, Criss left for a solo career and since then, the drum and lead positions have been ever-changing. In '83, the band stripped away the makeup and celebrated renewed interest."You wanted the best, you got it! The hottest band in the land: KISS!" So went the rally cry at the beginning of a Kiss concert, an event of exploding pyrotechnics, vomited blood and louder-than-God hard rock. Their fan club--The Kiss Army--swelled to six-figures strong during the band's '70s heyday, and between 1974 and today they've sold in excess of 70 million albums. In '96, the original band reformed (made up?), and took their full costume-makeup-pyro 1976 show on the road--for a year-long stint--resulting in one of the most successful rock tours ever. Conjecture that the band wanted to quit on a high note has remained unproven; anything could happen in Kiss' future.

Album:

Alive! is the first live album, and fourth overall, by American hard rock band Kiss. It is considered to be their breakthrough and a landmark for live albums. Released on September 10, 1975, the double-disc set contains live versions of selected tracks from their first three studio albums, Kiss, Hotter Than Hell and Dressed to Kill. It was recorded at concerts in Detroit, Michigan; Cleveland, Ohio; Wildwood, New Jersey; and Davenport, Iowa on May 16, June 21, July 20 and July 23, 1975.Despite their reputation and success as a live act, which emphasized theatrics as much as it did music, Kiss' fame did not translate to increased record sales. Fans told the band that their albums were not capturing how the band sounded live, so the band decided to release a live album. Kiss was essentially surviving on then-manager Bill Aucoin's American Express card. Complicating matters was the fact that their label, Neil Bogart's Casablanca Records, was having financial difficulties of its own stemming from a major misstep. The label had released a double album of Johnny Carson monologues earlier in the year. The album was a flop, but Casablanca had pressed millions of copies in anticipation of it being a strong seller.Casablanca, however, did think a Kiss live album would be a respectable seller. The album outperformed expectations as it was certified gold, becoming both Kiss' and Casablanca's first top 10 album. Years later, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons recounted that in the weeks after the release, they saw a significant increase in concert attendance. In the documentary Kiss: X-treme Close Up, Stanley remembers that at one particular show in Dayton, Ohio, "the place was packed; I mean you couldn't have gotten another person in with a shoehorn".The album's title was a homage to the 1972 live album Slade Alive! from the English rock group Slade, a band that heavily influenced Kiss.Alive! was first issued as a double-CD set in what has now become known as a "fatboy" 2CD case. When the Kiss back catalog was remastered, it was housed in a slimline 2CD case, and in keeping with the rest of the reissue program, had the artwork restored. Alive! was re-released in 2006 as part of the Kiss Alive! 1975–2000 box set. The short running time of Alive! allowed for a single, unedited CD edition in that release. The remastered CD edition eliminated the breaks between the four sides of the original LP release, resulting in that version of the album playing as one continuous performance. The 72-page booklet packaged with the CD set erroneously credited songwriting for "Cold Gin" to Stanley instead of Ace Frehley.

Album:

Alive II is the second live album (and eighth overall) by American hard rock band Kiss, released on October 14, 1977 by Casablanca Records.[7] The band had released three albums (Destroyer, Rock and Roll Over, and Love Gun) since the previous live outing, the 1975 release Alive!, and the band drew upon the variety of new tracks, with Eddie Kramer producing. The origins of Alive II go back to early 1977 when the band's manager Bill Aucoin suggested that Kramer record a live album during the evening show at Budokan Hall in Tokyo, Japan on April 2, 1977. The plan was to release a live album to give Kiss some much deserved time off before recording the album that would become Love Gun later that autumn. Kramer finished work on the album, but Casablanca and Kiss deemed it unusable, and the band forged ahead with their Love Gun sessions. Most of the live tracks on Alive II were recorded during the band's August 26–28 shows at the Forum while on their Love Gun Tour. The 3 p.m. soundchecks at the August 26 and 27 shows were recorded, and later used on the album (i.e. "I Stole Your Love") with crowd noise being dubbed in later. "Beth" and "I Want You" were lifted from the aborted Japanese live album and used on the finished Alive II. As the band did not want to duplicate songs included on Alive!, the songs chosen for the three live sides of the album were all drawn from Kiss' three preceding studio albums: Destroyer, Rock and Roll Over and Love Gun.On the original double album, the songs on side 4 (tracks 6–10 on the second CD) are studio tracks recorded September 13–16, 1977.Although Ace Frehley was originally credited for lead guitar on the studio tracks, the remastered version released in 1997 confirmed what had been speculated by Kiss fans for years: Bob Kulick actually played lead guitar on three tracks ("All American Man", "Rockin' in the U.S.A." and "Larger Than Life"), not Frehley. Frehley's sole involvement for the studio songs was "Rocket Ride" (originally written for a solo album, on which he sang lead vocals and played both guitar and bass guitar. Paul Stanley played all guitars on "Any Way You Want It", which was originally recorded by the Dave Clark Five in 1964.Several early copies of the album's cover featured a rare misprint of three additional songs ("Take Me", "Hooligan" and "Do You Love Me?") with a slightly altered song order. None of these additional songs appeared on the LP. On the misprint, "Take Me" is after "Detroit Rock City", with "King of the Night Time World" appearing after "Ladies Room" on Side 1. Side two features "Hooligan" after "Shock Me", which is placed after "Hard Luck Woman". On Side 3, "Do You Love Me?" appears after "God of Thunder", with "Beth" sandwiched between "I Want You" and "Shout It Out Loud". "Hooligan" and "Take Me" were performed on the 1977 Love Gun tour, and "Do You Love Me?" was performed on the Japanese tour that same year, making their consideration for inclusion with the second live album possible. Alive II was originally reissued as a double-CD set in what has now become known as a "fatboy" 2CD case. When the Kiss back catalog was remastered, it was housed in a slimline 2CD case and, in keeping with the rest of the reissue program, had the artwork restored. This included the set of tattoos. The booklet "The Evolution of Kiss"' and the picture inner sleeves were incorporated as part of the CD booklet. Alive II was re-released in 2006 as part of Kiss Alive! 1975-2000. It included "Rock and Roll All Nite" (single edit version) as a bonus track. The short running time of Alive II allowed for a single CD edition in the latest release.Coming off of a period of extensive touring, Alive II received a huge fan response and critical acclaim, reaching the No. 7 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. The album has received praise from several critics. In a retrospective review, critic Greg Parto of AllMusic remarked that several tracks such as "Detroit Rock City", "Shock Me" and "Shout It Out Loud" featured an "adrenaline-charged" vibe. He lauded the album for showing the group in its element as an "exciting live band".

Album:

Carnival of Souls: The Final Sessions is the seventeenth studio album by American rock band Kiss, released in 1997. It is the band's final album with lead guitarist Bruce Kulick, as well as their last album with drummer Eric Singer until 2009's Sonic Boom. The album is a departure from the band's classic hard rock style, in favor of a dark and dense grunge-oriented sound. It is also the band's last album of their unmasking era.The album was recorded between late 1995 and early 1996, but Kiss cancelled its release after committing to a reunion tour with the band's original lineup. Bootleg copies were circulated by fans, prompting the band to officially release the material in 1997 under the title Carnival of Souls: The Final Sessions. According to guitarist Bruce Kulick, the bootleg versions in distribution lacked songs that are part of the official release. There was no accompanying tour to support the album, and none of the songs on Carnival of Souls have ever been performed live by Kiss. Two former members of the band Black 'N Blue co-wrote songs on Carnival of Souls; vocalist Jaime St. James co-wrote "In My Head", and guitarist Tommy Thayer collaborated on "Childhood's End". Thayer would join Kiss as the band's permanent lead guitarist in 2002. The album's closing track, "I Walk Alone", features lead vocals from the band's then-lead guitarist Bruce Kulick, his only lead vocal performance with the band. Guitarist Bruce Kulick wrote at his official website that Carnival of Souls had "people equally vocal about it being their favorite Kiss CD or thinking it's the worst Kiss album ever".The album reached #27 on Billboard charts and the only single released from the album, "Jungle", made #8 on the US Mainstream Rock (chart). No music video was made to promote the single, which later won a 1997 Metal Edge Readers' Choice Award for Song of the Year.

Line Up:

Paul Stanley – lead vocals, rhythm guitar
Gene Simmons – lead vocals, bass

Album:

Chikara (Japanese for "power") is a compilation album by hard rock band Kiss, released in 1988 on Polystar.Chikara was released on CD only in Japan in support of KISS' 1988 Japanese tour.It includes KISS classics, many with different mixes and a picture sleeve featuring each band member in the the letters of the KISS logo.Exclusive to the Japanese market, the release of "Chikara" was limited to 100,000 copies and has long been out of print. One item of note is that this was the only official compact disc release of the extended 12" single version of the classic "I Was Made For Lovin' You" (also known as Dance Remix), until it was featured as B-side into the already now rare 'Psycho Circus' CDsingle in 1998."Chikara" is a great balls to the wall view of KISS through the '80s. While it does feature 4 tracks from the '70s - most notable the 8 minute Jim Burgess remix of "I Was Made For Lovin' You" for the first time on CD - it focuses on the band's earlier '80s works before the hair metal / glam scene took a serious toll on their writing. There's as well interesting and collectible remixes of "Creatures of the Night" (Remix)", "War Machine" (Remix), and "I Love It Loud" (Remix)", which is not the same remix appeared into the 'Smashes, Thrashes & Hits' compilation. As said, there were only 100,000 copies of this CD made, all out of print. If you are a collector and want to buy a used copy, beware of bootlegs: check the artwork - mostly poorly printed due to bad color alignment.Yeah, "Chikara" is just a compilation, but a very good one since it focuses mainly on KISS' 'Creatures Of The Night' through 'Asylum' era. And the extended version of "I Was Made For Lovin' You" alone makes this disc a must have for the true KISS fan.

Album:

Animalize is the twelfth studio album by American rock band Kiss. It was released in 1984 on Mercury Records. The album marked the only appearance by lead guitarist Mark St. John, who replaced Vinnie Vincent in April 1984.Remastered, Japanese version on SHM-CD of KISS‘ “Animalize” sounds better than any other digital disc release. “Animalize” sound design always made me scratch my head; I mean, it’s a very well produced album with that ‘new wave of Californian hard rock / hair metal sound’, but resulted quite shocking compared to KISS previous ‘classic sound”.I never liked the first CD pressings, but this SHM-CD is really good, the best you can get on physical disc.Mostly produced by Paul Stanley – Gene Simmons was so busy pursuing a career in acting and producing for others that only recorded few bass lines here – it’s rumored Desmond Child was heavily involved with the album’s production and direction, and I believe that listening to Child’s later works. The album marked the only appearance by lead guitarist Mark St. John, who replaced Vinnie Vincent in April 1984, but only for a few months as he was forced to leave KISS during the subsequent tour after being diagnosed with reactive arthritis. In a continuation of KISS’ commercial resurgence which had begun with previous LP Lick It Up, “Animalize” was certified platinum by the RIAA, and the single “Heaven’s on Fire” became its biggest hit with the music video on heavy MTV rotation. While many KISS detractors say all the band’s albums are the same, in fact, at least during the Eighties, all KISS albums sound different.“Animalize” is their ‘Californian glam-metal’ album, and for that sub-genre, a very good one. That ‘sparkling’ sound resulted ruined with the album’s transfer to CD.This Japanese remaster / SHM-CD turn the sonic spectrum much better, and it’s the one to get. Unfortunately this was a Limited Edition (numbered miniLP replica), completely sold out.

Album:

Lick It Up is the 11th studio album by American rock band Kiss. Prior to its 1983 release, the band members appeared on MTV without their trademark makeup. It was the first public appearance without make-up by the band since their very early days, and their first for Mercury Records, where they had been signed following their departure from Casablanca Records.More KISS was requested in a remastered, Japanese releases on SHM-CD, so here’s “Lick It Up“, the first unmasked album from the band, and one of my favorites from the legendary band. You gotta listen to the sound quality of this remastered release, fuller, pretty much in the late Nineties style, but works great for the production job on “Lick It Up”. This Limited, mini-LP replica numbered SHM-CD is a collector’s piece right now, very hard to find even used. After original drummer Peter Criss left, the band’s attempt in the early 80s to return to its roots somehow got derailed and turned into the 1981 concept album Music From the Elder: despite of being a very good album, fans didn’t understand it.Lead guitarist Ace Frehley checked out somewhere in the middle of making the record, and it seemed like remaining founding members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons had hit bottom.Amazingly, they recovered – at least creatively – with 1982’s Creatures of the Night, a defiant, backs-to-the-wall masterpiece that added new levels of grit, drama and shading to their repertoire. It should have returned Kiss to the top of the mountain. Instead, it went largely ignored by an audience that had either moved on or grown tired of the band’s recent stylistic wanderings. It was now clear that a big change was needed. So on Sept. 18, 1983, Stanley, Simmons, drummer Eric Carr and new guitarist Vinnie Vincent appeared on MTV to reveal their real faces. The album that the stunt was designed to promote, ‘Lick It Up’, was released the same day. And for the first time in five years, things worked out exactly as Kiss had planned.“I’ve always believed that Lick It Up was proof that people listen with their eyes,” Stanley said in the book Kiss: Behind the Mask. “The response to Lick It Up was four times the response to Creatures, and I think that’s purely because people were tired of the image of the band and couldn’t hear past what they saw. It’s a really good album, but it’s not in the same league as Creatures of the Night. While ‘Lick It Up’ does trade the glorious dynamics and slightly outside-the-lines coloring of its predecessor for a much sleeker, polished and slightly pop-metal sound, Paul Stanley is a bit too harsh. The songwriting chemistry among Simmons, Vincent and himself didn’t last long due to personal and contractual differences, but it did result in one of the band’s most cohesive and appealing albums. The insanely catchy title track broke the dam at radio and MTV, despite a somewhat strange post-apocalyptic video that spends its first 30 seconds showing the band’s crotches walking down the street and the rest of the time demonstrating that Gene Simmons has no idea what to do with himself in front of a camera without his fire breathing, fake blood and demon makeup.Other highlights include Stanley and Carr’s half-rapped, half-sung “All Hell’s Breaking Loose,” and three stomping numbers in which Simmons reclaims his crown as rock’s most unrepentant naughty and unsubtle lyricist: “Not for the Innocent,” “Fits Like a Glove” and the charmingly titled “Dance All Over Your Face.”Kiss’ new image and second strong album in a row were enough to return them to some degree of their former glory, as ‘Lick It Up’ cracked the Top 30 on the Billboard 200 while more and more fans once again turned up at their concerts. The following year brought another new album and the massive “Heaven’s on Fire” single, confirming that Kiss had successfully escaped its turn-of-the-decade troubles and entered a second era of success.

Album:

KISS in a remastered, Japanese release on SHM-CD, now the superb “Creatures Of The Night“, a Limited mini-LP replica numbered collector’s piece never re-printed, very hard to find.As extra, we added the 1985 Remix version of the title track, more ‘suited’ to the glammy sound of the era.For many fans, ‘Creatures Of The Night’ is the best KISS album ever. one heavy, over the top & loud album. Very very loud. Hot on the heels of The Elder and Killers, Creatures was a defiant “we’re back!” from a band who was written off by the end of 1981.It is important to note that there are several versions of Creatures floating around. At one point in 1985, shortly after ‘Asylum’, it was reissued with new (non-makeup) cover art with Bruce Kulick instead of Ace Frehley.Interestingly, neither played on Creatures. The reissue with the non-makeup cover has the songs in a different order, and the title track was remixed to bring down the loudness of the drums and make it a radio suitable single.“Creatures Of The Night” really is a stellar hard rock album featuring songwriting by Bryan Adams, Mikal Japp and a guy named Vincent Cusano, better known by his stage name Vinnie Vincent.Guitars were by Paul Stanley, Bob Kulick, Vincent, Rick Derringer, Steve Ferris, and who-knows-how-many-others. Kiss claim to have lost track due to the process of auditioning and recording at the same time.Eric Carr, who had no songwriting credits this time, played bass on Paul’s “I Still Love You”.And yeah, his drums are loud alright! They sound awesome, like John Bonham shooting cannons off the back of the stage. They are the cleanest, most powerful, natural and clear drum sounds this side of Led Zeppelin, and Kiss had a lot to be proud of. Just listen to “I Love It Loud”. Wow.“Creatures Of The Night” is an amazing fast paced opening, starting off with a barrage of Carr’s toms. I think The Elder was a disappointing way to introduce the new drummer. Creatures overcompensates, and I am sure Carr was very happy. The main riff and guitar lick in “Creatures” is driving and catchy, and the chorus will stay in your head for days. This is Kiss’ statement of purpose.Gene takes the tempo down a bit with “Saint & Sinner”, a rebellious one about standing your ground: “Get me off this carousel, you can do as you please, you can go to hell. Put my back against the wall, well, I’m not gonna fall on my knees, no, not at all.”At this point Gene was trying to sing in his low “monster” voice more, and this is such a great song. Shame it has not been resurrected live.“Keep Me Comin’” is a pretty self-explanatory Paul title. The riff is very Zeppelinesque, and Zep was a seemingly huge influence on this era of Kiss. It has some serious groove to it and Paul sings his ass off.“Rock And Roll Hell” was a song that was played live a couple of times on the 1982 tour. I would describe this Gene song as a slow burner. It seems to be about a kid who “might even steal a guitar” to get out of his rock and roll hell, and make the big time. Very cool groove and lyric.Everybody knows “I Love It Loud”. Your grandma knows “I Love It Loud”. At the time as a kid, I thought this was the greatest Kiss song ever. That drum beat, that chanting, and Gene’s awesome lyrics about taking no crap — yeah! That’s what every grade 8 student felt like! An anthem. The sole ballad “I Still Love You” is next, and it’s one of the best Paul vocal performances. Eric Carr play bass here.“Killer” (probably written at the same time as Killers?) is a really cool Gene Simmons song that has lots of interesting riffs and twists. I can’t believe how cool this song still is today. It’s fast, it has interesting backing vocals, and is insanely catchy. The album ends with Gene’s plodding epic, “War Machine” which still gets played live to this day, despite being retired briefly during the reunion tours. Gene wrote the song with Bryan Adams which would be a surprise to Adams fans. Who knew he could get so heavy? The lyrics are pure, vintage Gene: “Strike down the one who leads me, I’m gonna take his place, I’m gonna vindicate the human race.”“Creatures Of The Night” wound up being the first Kiss studio album to have only two lead singers: Gene and Paul. This would also prove to be Kiss’ final album in makeup. They had grounded themselves musically once again, while their biggest change was yet to happen….A must have in your 80s hard rock collection.

Album:

KISS in a remastered, Japanese release on SHM-CD, now the superb “Crazy Nights“, a Limited mini-LP replica numbered collector’s piece never re-printed, very hard to find.“Crazy Nights” is one perhaps the more ‘hair metal’ album from Stanley & Co., but at the same time if you dig deeper into the glossy production of the era, you’ll find some classic KISS tunes akin their Seventies glory days. The sound quality of this Limited, mini-LP replica numbered SHM-CD is fantastic. I assure you there isn’t a better sounding version of this album out there.Be aware of fake files floating around… this is the real one.Crazy Nights is the 14th studio album by American hard rock band Kiss, recorded from March to June 1987 and released on September 21, 1987 by Mercury and Vertigo in Europe. This was the second album to feature the new line-up of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Bruce Kulick, and Eric Carr.Crazy Nights is also the first KISS album to feature heavy use of keyboards and synthesizers, which was another departure in their music style, changing from their Creatures of the Night/Lick It Up/Animalize/Asylum heavy metal sound into a more radio-friendly and pop metal sound. It was re-released in 1998 as part of the Kiss Remasters series and is the last Kiss album to have been remastered.A relatively high number of songs from Crazy Nights were performed live during its supporting tour, but during and especially immediately following the tour, most of those songs were dropped and were never performed again. Only the song "Crazy Crazy Nights" was retained in their setlist for the Hot in the Shade Tour which followed a couple years later; it was dropped after that tour and would not return for nearly 20 years until the Sonic Boom Over Europe Tour. This makes the album one of the least represented in the bands' entire catalog over the course of their career in their setlists, behind only their 1981 album commercial flop Music from "The Elder".

Double Platinum is the first greatest hits album by the American hard rock band Kiss, released in 1978.Universal Music Japan has released a couple months ago a High Resolution disc (MQA-CD + UHQCD) of KISS essential album “Double Platinum“, a 2020 DSD master based on US original analog tape converted to 352.8kHz / 24bit.KISS’s first best compilation album summarizes the most representative songs from their first 6 original albums, but including a new recording “Strutter ’78” and other 9 songs in a newly re-mixed version.KISS were cruising at high speed during their late-’70s heyday. The band’s label, Casablanca, decided to do things a little differently than it would to a standard greatest-hits package. Sean Delaney and Mike Stone remixed many of the tracks, peppering them with noticeable sonic tweaks. The main point of contention was “Strutter ’78,” a re-recording of a popular song from the band’s debut album, which was used as an incentive for completists to purchase the new collection. Even though most fans consider the following year’s “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” as the group’s initial foray into the disco end of the pool, this is their first flirtation with the genre: The hi-hat is at the forefront of the mix, harmonies in the chorus are higher and the original chunky guitars are lower. There’s also an extra “Wooo!” and additional vocal inflections thrown in for good measure by Stanley.“Strutter ’78” was the only totally new recording among the the package, but there were other songs that keen ears would quickly recognize sounding slightly — or, in some cases, drastically — different from the versions fans were familiar with.Peter Criss doing his best Rod Stewart impression on “Hard Luck Woman” sounds much airier, mainly due to the holding off on drums until after the first verse. It feels looser too, with the improvised outro vocals by Criss more pronounced. And after a few plays, a repetitive drum reverb low in the mix starts to earworm its way into the listener’s head too.“Calling Dr. Love” isn’t just cut by nearly 30 seconds, it has a radically different intro, with the track’s lead vocalist, Gene Simmons, repeating the song’s title in a decidedly demonic manner, making it a more menacing version than the one found on Rock and Roll Over.“Firehouse” is sped up a bit and, instead of the sirens that close out the original track, the beginning of the song restarts during the fade here. “Detroit Rock City” has the most extreme cuts, losing more than a minute and a half in total. The intro radio broadcast and revving car from the original version are scrapped entirely. So is the car crash that ends the song.Perhaps the most bizarre change on ”Double Platinum” involved taking the final 50 seconds of acoustic intro on “Rock Bottom” from Dressed to Kill and fading it in at a snail’s pace and then pairing it with “She,” which was on the other side of Dressed to Kill. If that wasn’t enough, the song is made even longer by starting over the first verse and then fading it out.“Black Diamond,” which closes the compilation, was given a similar extension.Because neither Kiss nor Casablanca ever did anything on a small scale, ”Double Platinum” was launched with a high-profile television campaign. “The Kiss Double Platinum album, a tribute unprecedented in music history,” intoned a voiceover before label head Bogart, dressed in a tux, is introduced to present the artwork for the album.“For the success story of the decade, Casablanca honors Kiss with Double Platinum!” he declares.Great sound quality for this essential KISS release.

Album:

Universal Music Japan has released a couple months ago a High Resolution disc (MQA-CD + UHQCD) of KISS “Killers“, a 2020 DSD remaster based on US original analog tape converted to 352.8kHz / 24bit.At the time of its release (1982) “Killers” became a rarity, at least for the American public, because it wasn’t released in the USA. The album included some of the recent KISS hits re-mixed, but also 4 new songs, recorded specifically for this release. These new songs were recorded at the behest of Phonogram / Casablanca Records, in response to the commercial failure of 1981’s Music from “The Elder”.By 1982 KISS’ commercial popularity was goin’ down. 1980’s ‘Unmasked’ had barely achieved gold certification in the United States, and the band toured exclusively outside the US for the first time in their career that year, aside from one show in New York which introduced Eric Carr as their new official drummer.‘Music from The Elder’ fared even worse, as it failed to gain any certification, and the band did not tour behind it at all. The album, released in November 1981, was off the charts after three months.Phonogram Records (the parent company of Kiss’ label Casablanca Records) then requested the recording of four new songs to be included on an upcoming new greatest hits / compilation album. Phonogram requested ‘hard rock’ songs specifically, in contrast to the progressive rock-style of “The Elder”.However, the album cover for “Killers” featured the streamlined look the band had adopted during the Elder period.Numerous outside songwriters and session musicians were employed for the writing and recording of the four new songs on ”Killers”, as well as the subsequent album, Creatures of the Night.Canadian Adam Mitchell co-wrote ‘I’m A Legend Tonight’ and ‘Partners In Crime’, while songwriter and musician Mikel Japp, who co-wrote three songs on Paul Stanley’s 1978 solo album, helped with “Down on Your Knees” with Stanley and Bryan Adams.Despite being pictured on the album’s cover art (from the photo session for Music from “The Elder”), Ace Frehley wasn’t part of KISS anymore. His replacement for the ”Killers” sessions was Bob Kulick, who had previously substituted for Frehley on a handful of studio tracks on 1977’s Alive II; however, whereas Kulick had been asked to mimic Frehley’s playing style when recording for Alive II, he was permitted to employ his own techniques for ”Killers”.The four new songs were considered a “primer” for Kiss’ next release, while some fans have indicated that fan club memos at the time listed Frehley as “temporarily out of action,” possibly due to a car accident or something similar, and originally listed Vinnie Vincent as a temporary replacement for Frehley.Due to the large volume of Kiss live albums and greatest hits albums already available domestically, Phonogram decided to issue ‘Killers’ outside the US only. There’s different track list versions, which became collector pieces for the fans. This Japanese release featured two additional tracks not found on the standard edition: “Escape from the Island” (which is not on the Japanese release of Music From “The Elder”) and “Shandi”.Similarly, “Talk to Me” and “Shandi” were added to the track listing of the Australian release. Also, due to the shape of the S in the band’s logo, there were two covers: one with the standard “S”, and a more European friendly version with a “backwards”-Z shape. The version of ‘Shout It Out Loud’ found on this release features the single mix that has all the vocals in the center channel, whereas the original ‘Destroyer’ version features Paul Stanley on the right channel, and Gene Simmons on the left. It also fades about ten seconds earlier than the album version. The version of “God of Thunder” found here is missing the intro found on ‘Destroyer’, to give the song a more ‘instant’ impact. The sound definition of this MQA-CD + UHQCD is excellent.

Album:

Japanese-only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) paper sleeve pressing of this classic album from the Glam Hard Rockers, originally released in 1976. SHM-CDs can be played on any audio player and delivers unbelievably high-quality sound. You won't believe it's the same CD!Destroyer is the fourth studio album by American hard rock band Kiss, released on March 15, 1976 by Casablanca Records in the US. It was the third successive Kiss album to reach the top 40 in the US, as well as the first to chart in Germany and New Zealand. The album was certified gold by the RIAA on April 22, 1976, and platinum on November 11 of the same year, the first Kiss album to achieve platinum. The album marked a departure from the raw sound of the band's first three albums.Rehearsals for Destroyer began in August 1975, while the group was embarked on their supporting tour for Alive!. The band felt that Bob Ezrin was the right person to help them take their sound to the next level and to maintain the commercial success they had achieved with Alive! Before meeting with Ezrin, the band had written and recorded a 15 song demo in the Magna Graphics studio in August 1975. Bob Ezrin flat out rejected most of the material as only heavily re-worked versions of "God of Thunder" and "Detroit Rock City" made it to the album, and one song "Mad Dog" was pilfered for lyrics to "Sweet Pain" and a riff for "Flaming Youth". Other songs from this demo were re-worked for the following album "Rock and Roll Over" and Gene Simmons' 1978 solo album while others remain unreleased. The first recording sessions for the album took place in September 3–6, 1975 at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, during a brief break between the Dressed to Kill and Alive! tours. The basic album tracks were recorded during this time.[9] The majority of the recording sessions for Destroyer took place in January 1976, after the conclusion of the Alive! tour. The first demo recorded during the Destroyer sessions was "Ain't None of Your Business" featuring Peter Criss on vocals. The plodding, heavy song, written by country songwriters Becky Hobbs and Lew Anderson, was rejected by the band and later appeared on the 1977 debut album by Michael Des Barres' band Detective. Although this song was rejected, other outside songs and suggestions were accepted by the band. In particular, Kim Fowley and Mark Anthony became important contributors during the songwriting process., bringing in the title and basic structure of the song "King of the Night Time World" from their previous band Hollywood Stars' then-unreleased 1974 album Shine Like a Radio (which also featured the original version of the Alice Cooper song "Escape" from Welcome to My Nightmare).During the recording sessions, Ezrin resorted to numerous tactics designed to increase the quality of music Kiss recorded. Because none of the group were trained musicians, Ezrin halted the sessions at one point to provide lessons in basic music theory. In an effort to instill a sense of discipline, he wore a whistle around his neck and exhorted the band with sayings such as, "Campers, we're going to work!".When Simmons stopped playing during the recording of an outro, Ezrin yelled at him, saying, "Don't you ever stop a take unless I tell you!" Paul Stanley later compared the experience of working with Ezrin as "musical boot camp" but said that the group "came out a lot smarter for it." Simmons echoed the sentiment by stating, "It was exactly what we needed at the time."The cover art for Destroyer was painted by fantasy artist Ken Kelly. Kelly was invited to a show and given a backstage pass. He said of the performance, "It blew me away." Kelly was later commissioned by the band to draw the cover for 1977's Love Gun.Kelly's original version of the album cover was rejected by the record company because they felt the scene was too violent looking with the rubble and flames. Also, the original version had the members of Kiss wearing the Alive! costumes. The front cover shows the group striding on top of a pile of rubble, and a desolate background spotted with destroyed buildings, some of which are engulfed in flames. The back cover shows a similar scene, but with more buildings on fire. The front of the inner sleeve featured a large Kiss logo and the lyrics to "Detroit Rock City". The other side displayed the lyric "SHOUT IT OUT LOUD", as well as an advertisement for the Kiss Army fan club.

Album:

Alive III is a live album released by the American hard rock band Kiss in 1993.It was certified gold in 1994. It is the third installment of the Alive series. The recording of Alive III took place over multiple dates (in Cleveland, Detroit and Indianapolis) during the band's 1992 tour in support of Revenge. It was the first live album the band had released since 1977's Alive II, and the first live recordings released since 1984's Animalize Live Uncensored concert film. The recording of "I Was Made For Lovin' You" was actually recorded at one of the band's soundchecks, but had the crowd overdubbed in the song to make it appear as if it is "live," which led to speculation that many other songs on "Alive III" could be overdubbed, just as was done on the first two in the series. The album is the only live Kiss album released during the group's non-makeup era, excluding Kiss Unplugged, released later in 1996. During the recording of Alive II, Kiss did not want to duplicate songs from Alive!, although some songs from Alive III are duplicate songs from their previous live albums. For example, "Rock and Roll All Nite" was performed on Alive! and again on Alive III, but was not featured on Alive II. It is also the first Kiss live album to feature a different lineup to the previous two, which featured the original lineup. The liner notes of Alive III include a family tree showing the various Kiss lineups from 1973–1993, as well as bands that the then-current and former members of Kiss were in. It was designed by the band's Japanese fan club. Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi, for whom Eric Singer drummed in 1986–87, is misnamed Tommy. The notes also mistakenly claim that "Watchin' You" is from Kiss, and "I Was Made for Lovin' You" from Dressed to Kill. The re-release of Alive III (as part of the Kiss Alive! 1975–2000 box set) contains an additional track, "Take It Off", matching the original international CD and US vinyl versions of the album.Alive III was certified Gold by the RIAA on October 27, 1994."Canny power pop given a merciless headbanging," decided Jeremy Clarke in Q.[4] Kerrang! magazine listed Alive III eleventh best album of 1993.Bruce Kulick's climactic version of "The Star Spangled Banner" was ranked seventh on the Ultimate Classic Rock list Top 10 National Anthem Guitar Solos, before Ace Frehley's version and after Joe Satriani's."Take It Off" was a bonus track on the Japanese, European and South American CD releases and the US vinyl release. This version of the album would later be included in the Kiss Alive! 1975–2000 CD box set.

Album:

Japanese-only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) paper sleeve pressing of this classic album from the Glam Hard Rockers, originally released in 1977.Love Gun is the sixth studio album by American hard rock band Kiss, released on June 30, 1977.[1] Casablanca Records and FilmWorks shipped 1,000,000 copies of the album on this date. It was certified platinum and became the band's first top 5 album on the Billboard 200. The album was remastered in 1997 and again in 2014.It was their first album to feature a lead vocal performance from Ace Frehley, making it the first Kiss album to feature lead vocal performances from all four band members. It was also the last studio album to feature Peter Criss on every song, as he was replaced by session drummer Anton Fig for all but one song on 1979's Dynasty.A cardboard "Love Gun" (assembly required) was included inside the album,[6] along with a Kiss merchandise order form.[7] Before Love Gun was completed, a Gallup poll indicated that Kiss was the most popular band in the United States, beating Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and the Eagles. On August 26, 27, and 28, 1977, Kiss recorded three shows at the LA Forum for their next release, their second live album Alive II.The album cover was painted by fantasy artist Ken Kelly,[8] who previously contributed the cover for 1976's Destroyer.Love Gun was reissued in 1985. The reissue included the original artwork, and while it featured a plain sleeve the jacket still contained a reference for the original color sleeve. The first 10,000 pressings included an error on the labels; Track 3 on Side A was listed as Plaster Caster but actually played Got Love For Sale. Side B was completely out of order.Love Gun was remastered and reissued in 1997 as part of the Kiss Remasters series. It was remastered and reissued again in a deluxe edition on October 28, 2014, with sleeve notes by Def Leppard's Joe Elliott and a second disc containing demos, live rarities and a 1977 interview with Gene Simmons. All tracks on the second disc were previously unreleased, bar the demo of "Reputation", which had appeared on the compilation Kiss 40 a few months earlier. The three live tracks were recorded at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland on December 20, 1977. "The potential for this to be the greatest deluxe edition of all time," noted music writer Geoff Barton, "is ruined by a too-clean remastering job – plus, if truth be told, a track that has dated badly in 'Christine Sixteen'."

Paul Stanley − vocals, rhythm guitar, first guitar solo on "I Stole Your Love", bass on "Love Gun"

Album:

The 40-year-anniversary celebration will continue. Now the sixth studio album by the band appears with the title "Love Gun" as a 2-CD Deluxe Edition. In this edition are: CD 1: the original album remastered CD 2: rare, previously unreleased "Love Gun" demos of "Plaster Caster," "Then She Kissed Me," "Tomorrow and Tonight" and "Much Too Soon". In addition, the first four lines of the demos of "I Know Who You Are" (which later became "Living In Sin") and much more. The packaging comply with the Deluxe Editions series with his usual digipak packaging.Love Gun is the sixth studio album by American hard rock band Kiss, released on June 30, 1977.[1] Casablanca Records and FilmWorks shipped 1,000,000 copies of the album on this date. Album:

On August 26, Eagle Rock Entertainment will unleash "Kiss Rocks Vegas" on DVD+CD.Captured in the midst of their 40th anniversary world tour, the Rock And Roll Hall Of Famers sonically shook Vegas during their residency at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel And Casino in November 2014. This Sin City set sizzles with KISS classics from across their 44-album legacy: "Rock And Roll All Night", "Detroit Rock City", "Shout It Out Loud", "Love Gun" and more. As a bonus feature, "Kiss Rocks Vegas" includes a seven-song acoustic set. Punctuated with pyrotechnics galore, the film presents the fire, electricity, and one-of-a-kind rock experience that earned KISS over 100 million sales globally. The Deluxe Edition of "Kiss Rocks Vegas" is presented as a hardcover package with a 12X12 book, boasting photos from the show and an exclusive CD. Said KISS frontman Paul Stanley: "We rocked and Vegas rolled! This was epic in-your-face KISS! We got up close and personal. I think rock and roll fans will really enjoy this spectacle that only KISS can deliver."Added Gene Simmons: "KaBOOM! We blew up the Joint at The Hard Rock in Vegas like never before. We are very proud of this and know that you will be blown away as well."Speaking to Las Vegas Weekly, Stanley stated about how the idea for the KISS residency came about: "To spend as much time as we do in Vegas and to live as close as we do, the idea of doing a residency and leaving our stage setup, as opposed to breaking it down nightly, was really appealing."He continued: "We [had] just finished 42 cities and played for 600,000 people, but that meant that every night the show got disassembled and moved. There's something appealing and challenging about building a set that doesn't have to be moved. You don't have to take into account the practicality of it, being able to be broken down constantly and reassembled. So this was something that we had wanted to do for quite a while; it was just a matter of making sure we found people who were in agreement on how to do it. The Joint was the natural place to do it."

Line Up:

Paul Stanley – rhythm guitar, vocals (1973–present)
Gene Simmons – bass, vocals (1973–present)

Album:

Universal Music Japan has released few months ago a High Resolution disc (MQA-CD + UHQCD) of KISS “Best Of Solo Albums“, a 2020 DSD remaster based on the original analog tape converted to 352.8kHz / 24bit.The compilation was never released in North America, so here it’s quite a rarity. Seems there never has been an official CD release either. Any CD would be a bootleg, until now: this Japanese is an official Universal Music release.“Best Of Solo Albums“ is a really must have addition to your collection, even if you have all the solo albums: Paul Stanley’s “Take Me Away (Together As One)” is featured here in its complete version (not fade out like on the actual solo album), the intro to Peter Criss “I Can’t Stop The Rain” is louder in the mix, etc.”Best Of Solo Albums [Japan Hi-Res MQA-CD UHQCD / DSD remaster 2020]” has been released few weeks ago, but it’s almost sold out.Best of Solo Albums was released exclusively in Europe and is a "greatest hits" of the four solo albums from the members of Kiss, released back in 1978. Best of Solo Albums featured three songs from each members album. Considering the quality of the songs the album probably would be better of with less tracks from Gene Simmons and Peter Criss, and some more from Ace Frehley or Paul Stanley... but regardless of that its a pretty cool compilation of tracks spawning from one of the most GREATEST ideas in rock history.

Line Up:

Paul Stanley - vocals, rhythm guitar, lead guitar on "Sure Know Something", bass guitar on "Love Gun" & "I Was Made for Lovin' You"
Ace Frehley - backing vocals and lead guitar except on "I'm a Legend Tonight", "Down on Your Knees", "Nowhere to Run" & "Partners in Crime"
Gene Simmons - vocals; bass guitar except "Love Gun" and "I Was Made for Lovin' You"
Peter Criss - drums on "Cold Gin", "Love Gun", "Shout It Out Loud", "Detroit Rock City", "God of Thunder" & "Rock & Roll All Nite"

Tracklist:

01. Ace Frehley – New York Groove
02. Gene Simmons – Living In Sin
03. Gene Simmons – See You Tonite
04. Ace Frehley – Rip It Out
05. Ace Frehley – Fractured Mirror
06. Peter Criss – Don’t You Let Me Down
07. Gene Simmons – Radioactive
08. Paul Stanley – Tonight You Belong To Me
09. Paul Stanley – Take Me Away (Together As One)
10. Peter Criss – Rock Me Baby
11. Peter Criss – I Can’t Stop The Rain
12. Paul Stanley – Hold Me, Touch Me (Think Of Me When We’re Apart)

Album:

The 1978 KISS ‘solo albums’ from each band member in its Japan SHM-CD pressing. Many of you reported finding fake SHM-CD rips all over the net, so here’s the real deal, the numbered limited edition of each including full artwork. For “Gene Simmons” the KISS Army was waiting for a down-n-dirty, rumbling metal monster, but while Gene’s album some of KISS style hard rock (“Radioactive”), there’s Beatle-esque acoustic noodling (“Mr. Make Believe” and “See You Tonight”) and a orchestrated string songs and other studio trickery.Gene makes it clear that The Demon had already “gone Hollywood” by ’78, as evidenced by the many guest appearances by celebrities like Gene’s then-girlfriend Cher, ’70s pop star Helen Reddy (!) and Casablanca Records stablemate Donna Summer. Fun fact: a then-unknown Kate Sagal, later of “Married With Children” and “Sons of Anarchy” fame, appears on Gene’s album as a backup vocalist! Now, listening this album in perspective, it’s fun, showcasing an artist with much more than hard rock party anthems into his mind.

Line Up:

Gene Simmons – vocals, guitars
Neil Jason – bass
Elliot Randall – guitars
Allan Schwartzberg – drums
Sean Delaney – percussion, backing vocals
Eric Troyer – piano and vocals

Richard Gerstein – piano
Joe Perry – guitars on “Radioactive” & “Tunnel of Love”
Bob Seger – backing vocals
Rick Nielsen – guitars on “See You in Your Dreams”
Helen Reddy – background vocals on “True Confessions”
Jeff “Skunk” Baxter – guitars
Donna Summer – background vocals
Janis Ian – backing vocals on the “Prelude to Radioactive”
Cher – spoken word phone call on “Living in Sin”
Michael Des Barres – background vocals
Richie Ranno – guitars on “Tunnel of Love”

Album:

The 1978 KISS ‘solo albums’ from each band member in its Japanese SHM-CD pressing. Many of you reported finding fake SHM-CD rips all over the net, so here’s the real deal, the numbered limited edition of each including full artwork.Just like Ace, Paul Stanley knew that his strength was in straight forward, guitar-driven rock n’ roll, so even as a solo artist on “Paul Stanley” he didn’t stray very far from the formula that made KISS so successful. “Tonight You Belong To Me” and “Move On” start the album off with a nice one-two punch. Then Paul opens his heart for other of his favorite styles; Soul and R&B. The disco-infused “Hold Me, Touch Me” (the album’s single) or the Seventies ballad “Together as One” shows he can write interesting stuff. It’s a varied album, very late Seventies however with all the retro movement out there, still feels fresh today.KISS was on top of the world in 1977. After breaking through to the mainstream in a big way with 1975’s ALIVE! concert double-LP, the grease-painted, fire breathing hard rock foursome suddenly seemed unstoppable. They released a string of platinum records over the next several years including 1976’s Destroyer (which featured the surprise hit single “Beth”), Rock and Roll Over (late ’76) and Love Gun (June of ’77).The 1977 Gallup public opinion poll named KISS the most popular band in America and their first Super Special comic book (“printed in REAL KISS BLOOD!”) set new sales records for Marvel Comics.KISS’ winning streak continued with ALIVE II – a new live set featuring five new studio tracks, which was released in October of ’77 and became another million-seller. It seemed that KISS could do no wrong, and the sky was the limit as they rocketed forward into 1978.There was just one small problem… the band was beginning to rot from the inside. As KISS got bigger, inter-personal relationships between the four members were getting progressively worse. Where once the quartet’s motto had been “All for one, one for all,” their massive success had seemingly given each member a new philosophy: “What’s in it for me?”Pinpointing the source of the internal friction naturally depended on which band member you talked to. It’s not exactly a secret that drummer Peter Criss and guitarist Ace Frehley were the two major party animals in the band, and their increasing dependence on narcotics and alcohol was a constant source of irritation to the band’s tee-totaling founders, Gene Simmons (bass) and Paul Stanley (guitar/vocals).Criss and Frehley, meanwhile, have often described Simmons and Stanley as tight-fisted dictators and control freaks who constantly forced them to toe the “company line” both musically and during interviews. However the rift began, things apparently came to a head sometime during 1977, when both Frehley and Criss threatened to leave the band and start solo careers.Simmons and Stanley may not have liked Frehley or Criss very much at that point, but they were smart enough to realize that losing two key band members at the same time would be disastrous. Thus, KISS came up with an ambitious new plan for 1978: in order for the KISS members to get a much-needed break from one another, all four of them would cut their own solo albums, which would then be released on the same day (backed by a typically massive marketing campaign, of course) with a common cover design scheme to unify them. All of this hype would provide the perfect lead in to the band’s movie debut, KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park, which was being prepared for NBC-TV as a Halloween special. To keep KISS’ place warm on music-store racks, Casablanca Records rush-released the Double Platinum 2-LP greatest-hits set, which contained one new track – a dance remix of the debut album’s “Strutter,” re-titled “Strutter ’78.”It raced up the charts and kept the faithful KISS Army occupied while the band members each slaved away in separate recording studios, working on their solo debuts. On September 18, 1978, the veil of secrecy was lifted. Casablanca Records shipped 1.25 million copies of each member’s solo album to music stores across America, so that they all instantly qualified for “Platinum” status.

Line Up:

Album:

The 1978 KISS ‘solo albums’ from each band member in its Japan SHM-CD pressing. Many of you reported finding fake SHM-CD rips all over the net, so here’s the real deal, the numbered limited edition of each including full artwork.Peter will readily admit that musically, he was the “odd man out” in KISS. He was born a few years earlier than his band mates, so while they were growing up on a steady hard rockin’ diet of Led Zeppelin, the Who, and the Beatles, Peter came of age in the late 50s/early ’60s listening to lots of swing music and the soul, doo-wop and girl groups of rock n’ roll’s formative years. Therefore, it makes sense that his solo album “Peter Criss” is a smooth, retro flavored pop-rock record with a dance-able edge.Even though Peter’s album is by far the less rocking of the four solos, it actually feels like the most honest. I have to give Peter credit for thinking he would be able to sell schmaltzy Dad-Rock like “You Matter To Me” or “That’s the Kind of Sugar Papa Likes” to KISS’ hard-rock audience. The reverent cover of the oldie “Tossin’ and Turnin'” and the earnest ballad “Easy Thing” are the major highlights here, showcasing Criss’ smoky singing voice at its best.

Line Up:

Peter Criss – lead vocals, drums, percussion
Allan Schwartzberg – drums on tracks 6-7 and 10
Bill Bodine – bass guitar on tracks 1-5 and 9
Neil Jason – bass guitar on tracks 6-7 and 10

Richard Gerstein – keyboards on tracks 6-7, and 10
Michael Carnahan – saxophone

Album:

Ace Frehley is a 1978 solo album from Ace Frehley, the lead guitarist of American hard rock band Kiss. It was one of four Kiss solo albums released by Casablanca Records on September 18, 1978. The album was produced by Frehley and Eddie Kramer. It featured Anton Fig on drums. He later performed session work on the Kiss albums Dynasty and Unmasked, and became a member of Ace Frehley's band Frehley's Comet.Fig and Will Lee, who played bass on three of the album's tracks, later gained international prominence as members of the World's Most Dangerous Band and the CBS Orchestra along with Paul Shaffer on Late Night with David Letterman and Late Show with David Letterman. In an interview with Loudwire, Frehley stated that some of the songs from his solo album were originally slated for the fifth Kiss album, Rock and Roll Over. AllMusic rated the album 4 stars out of 5 and said, "Of the four Kiss solo albums, the best of the bunch is Ace Frehley's".Jason Josephes of Pitchfork concurred that it was the standout of the Kiss solo efforts, describing it as "a melange of riff rock, power pop, and just a little bit of soul"."New York Groove", which was first recorded in 1975 by British glam rock band Hello, rose to No. 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. This was the highest chart placement for any of the singles released from the 1978 solo albums. The album reached No. 26 on the US Billboard 200 album chart. It was certified platinum on October 2, 1978, and shipped over 1,000,000 copies. It is the highest selling of the four Kiss solo albums.

Album:

Gold is a 2005 greatest hits collection by American shock rock band Kiss. This two-disc set covers the band's recordings from 1974 to 1982. All tracks are previously available. The SHM-CD [Super High Material CD] format features enhanced audio quality through the use of a special polycarbonate plastic. Using a process developed by JVC and Universal Music Japan discovered through the joint companies' research into LCD display manufacturing, SHM-CDs feature improved transparency on the data side of the disc, allowing for more accurate reading of CD data by the CD player laser head. SHM-CD format CDs are fully compatible with standard CD players. At this point, you can’t blame Gene anymore.Kiss’ old record label was free to issue whatever compilations they wanted, and they did. Of these compilations, none contained previously unreleased material. So, these are aimed strictly at the newbies, and the collectors. And the collectors loathe shelling out for this kind of thing. There is some light shining through the clouds.First off, unlike every hits album released before it, this one actually has liner notes! Not bad liner notes either! Some common errors have been corrected in them (for example, Anton Fig is listed on drums for the “disco” albums). Not all the errors have been corrected, unfortunately, and I believe all lineup information has been taken directly from the liner notes of Kiss’ The Box Set.Second, the track listing really is superb, even if offering few surprises. The ground covered is the “makeup years” 1974-1982…yet for unknown reasons the entire (excellent) Creatures Of The Night album is absent. Instead Universal ends this compilation with two tracks from the import only Killers, a pleasant if baffling inclusion. The liner notes end here as well, glossing over the entire last two decades of the band.Lastly, there are a total of 40 tracks on two CDs, a very generous slice of rock n’ roll indeed. This allowed Universal to include no less than five tracks from the first album! Five tracks are included from Destroyer, four from Alive!, and each solo record is given one track as well! Even the box set didn’t have anything from Gene’s solo record (although it included an unreleased demo). The disco albums are given a total of four tracks combined, and Music From The Elder is not ignored either.I suppose in this day and age, a band of Kiss’ age does need a number of hits albums. You need a good, full-length single disc for the people who want that (The Very Best Of). You need a double-disc version for the people who want a little more (Gold). And now in this era, you also need a budget-priced 10 or 12 track hits compilation like 20th Century Masters. When you think about it, it all makes sense. While I think Universal really should have put something on here for the diehards who already have all this material several times over, one version of this album comes with a DVD of Kiss Exposed. I guess that’s cool if you don’t have it already. It’s an odd pick, since Exposed mostly focuses on the music after the makeup came off, none of which are relevant to Gold.

Album:

KISS - Off The Soundboard: Live In Des Moines 1977 was recorded during the landmark and extravagantly-produced KISS Alive II tour, and the 17 song set features a raw and powerful performance of classic KISS concert staples such as "Let Me Go Rock 'N' Roll", "Love Gun," "Rock And Roll All Nite", (No. 12 Billboard), "Shout It Out Loud", and "Beth" (No. 7 Billboard chart hit and the 1977 People's Choice Award winner in the Best Song Category) performed by the lineup of Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss. KISS - Off The Soundboard: Live In Des Moines 1977 captures a monumental moment in KISStory and is a celebration of the legendary band giving rock 'n' roll fans the ultimate live KISS experience.

Album:

Kiss Symphony: Alive IV is a 2003 live album from the American rock band, Kiss, performing with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO). The arrangements were made by David Campbell, who also conducted the MSO. It is the group's fourth album in the Alive series and first release under Kiss Records and Sanctuary Records. The concert from which the album is taken featured original Kiss members Peter Criss, Paul Stanley, and Gene Simmons. All three appeared at a press conference announcing the show. "The result will be no less than a symphonic sonic boom," promised Stanley. "Beethoven and Mozart will rise up dancing with fists raised as we unleash a spectacle that will be both classic and classical. This time it's black tie and black leather."[2] Members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra who accompanied Kiss during this performance wore Kiss makeup and tuxedos.Although Stanley said, "We're hoping Ace will be at this spectacular concert," guitarist Frehley once again left the band. The show instead introduced new member Tommy Thayer as the "Spaceman". The resultant album was Kiss's last to feature Criss – who would leave the band officially in 2004, to be replaced once again by Eric Singer. (Singer had previously rejoined the band to replace Criss in 2001 after the band's first Farewell Tour.)In 2000, Kiss had planned to release the original Alive IV (featuring the reunited original lineup), but this was nixed by label politics and contracts. The artwork was revealed[3] and its version of "Rock and Roll All Nite" was added to The Box Set, but the album was shelved. The band moved labels from Universal/Island to Sanctuary Music and issued Kiss Symphony: Alive IV. The original Alive IV belatedly appeared – as Alive! The Millennium Concert – in a 2006 box set of all the Alive albums, Kiss Alive! 1975-2000.10,000 limited numbered copies were released on vinyl in the US.Unlike past Alive releases, the songs on the album appear in the order they were performed, with the concert split into three acts. In Act One, Kiss performed six songs by themselves. In Act Two, they performed a five-song acoustic set with the Melbourne Symphony Ensemble. Act Three featured the band and the full 60-piece orchestra on all tracks. The live versions of "Rock and Roll All Nite", "God of Thunder" and "Lick It Up" were featured on the soundtrack of the video game Tony Hawk's Underground. The game also featured a bonus level, entitled "Hotter Than Hell", which takes place where the performance was done in Melbourne. All tracks were recorded at Marvel Stadium (known at the time as Telstra Dome) in Melbourne, Australia, on February 28, 2003.
