Bio:

Survivor is an American rock band formed in Chicago in 1978 by Jim Peterik. The band achieved its greatest success in the 1980s, garnering many charting singles, especially in the United States. The band is best known for its double platinum-certified 1982 hit "Eye of the Tiger," the theme song for the motion picture Rocky III (US number 1 for 6 weeks). Singles like "Burning Heart" (US number 2), "The Search Is Over" (US number 4), "High on You" (US number 8), "Is This Love" (US number 9) and "I Can't Hold Back" (US number 13) continued to chart in the mid-1980s.The band tweaked its musical direction in 1988 with the release of the slightly heavier Too Hot to Sleep, but due to lackluster promotion the album barely reached the Billboard 200 in the United States. Because of this and tension between founding members, the band split.Singer Jimi Jamison later toured as "Survivor" in the mid-1990s without the permission of the rest of the band, but reunited with guitarist Frankie Sullivan in 2000. The band then released Reach in 2006, but Jamison left again after its release and was replaced by singer Robin McAuley. Survivor continued to tour with McAuley into 2011 until Jamison returned later that year.An announcement on November 13, 2011 by McAuley on his Facebook page revealed that he had left Survivor. A subsequent announcement on November 18, 2011 confirmed that Jamison had rejoined the band and a tour was to take place in 2012.In April 2013 it was announced by the band's official media sources that guitarist Frankie Sullivan had reunited the current Survivor line-up with original singer Dave Bickler, with the band now having their two most popular vocalists together for the next tour, Bickler and Jamison. On September 1, 2014 Jamison died of what was believed to be a heart attack in his home in Memphis, TN. at the age of 63. His autopsy released on November 11, 2014 revealed the actual cause of death to be a hemorrhagic brain stroke, with "acute methamphetamine intoxication contributing."

Album:

Vital Signs is the fifth studio album by the American rock band Survivor and their first with vocalist Jimi Jamison. The album was their second most successful in the U.S., reaching #16 on the Billboard Album charts and being certified platinum by the RIAA. This album includes the singles "I Can't Hold Back", "High on You", "The Search Is Over" and "First Night."This is one of the very few studio albums that remained commercially available by Volcano Entertainment after they took a great deal of their releases out of print in August 2009. Rock Candy Records also remastered the content of Vital Signs and reissued it in 2010, adding "The Moment of Truth" (from The Karate Kid soundtrack) as a bonus track. If you need to show someone what's 80s AOR, press play on "Vital Signs" by SURVIVOR, and better on this excellent remaster by Rock Candy specialists. As the story is taken up by journalist Dave Ling in the great essay accompanying this Rock Candy release (16-page booklet + rare Survivor photos) Survivor and their record label had a rethink after the lack of hits on their previous album. The move was the replacing of vocalist Dave Bickler with ex-Target and Cobra singer Jimi Jamison, with Frankie Sullivan vacating the producer's chair in favour of the legendary Ron Nevison. The results were spectacular. "Vital Signs" blew the roof of the charts, delivering three US top 20 hit singles (‘The Search Is Over’, ‘High On You’ & ‘I Can’t Hold Back’) whilst the album itself made #16 on the album charts. Of course it helped that the Sullivan / Peterik axis came up with some killer songs for Jamison to wrap his out of this world vocal cords around, with Nevison giving a glossy radio-friendly sheen, classic AOR sound.Elsewhere the slower stomp of 'Broken Promises' and 'Popular Girl' are strong album tracks and the upbeat 'First Night' and classic 'It's The Singer Not The Song' raised the energy levels even higher. 'Everlasting' is a smooth mid-tempo ballad, whilst the moody 'I See You In Everyone' is a terrific album closer. This Rock Candy remastered version adds the non-LP, hit single 'The Moment Of Truth' from 'The Karate Kid' soundtrack. Another great tune to treasure. This is Survivor's best and most enduring album, and song-wise and singles-wise their cracker. Ron Nevison awesome production turned the vocals, keys, and the electric guitars jump out at you – especially from the radio as was probably the intention.I said this many times: Ron Nevison is the greatest AOR / Rock producer from the '80s. However, his productions sound fantastic on vinyl LP but not so on CD (specially the first Eighties generation CD's) pretty poor in dynamic range and bass-less. Now, with modern transfer-to-CD technology, much of this problem is alleviated by the remastering of Jon Astley, and through decent speakers or headphones this Rock Candy 'Vital Signs' sounds like a completely different album. Recognised as arguably Survivor’s finest moment, "Vital Signs" is packed with killer tracks and terrific melodies, truly one of the greatest AOR albums of all time.

Album:

More SURVIVOR for the soul, with this really good Rock Candy remaster of "Premonition", the band's second album. With a new rhythm section and the pair guitarist Frankie Sullivan & keyboarder Jim Peterik writing all the songs, "Premonition" was produced by themselves, in fact, it was Peterik the real conductor orienting the band to a more AOR sound."Premonition" showcased Survivor in an upbeat and far more radio-oriented mood, harnessing a sound that leaps out of the speakers and wrestles you to the floor with little room for pleasantries.Naturally, the band’s greatest asset was still very much in focus; quality songs with hooks and melodies to die for.Tracks such as ‘Summer Nights’, ‘Light Of A Thousand Smiles’ (inspired by Journey), the balls-out rocking of ‘Chevy Nights’ and Survivor's first American top-40 hit ‘Poor Man’s Son’, all contain a magical mixture of streamlined efficiency and brutal honesty, resulting in a sound that virtually defined the musical climate."Premonition" certainly turned heads; most notably that of Sylvester Stallone who requested the band write a theme song for his upcoming Rocky III movie... No prises for guessing what came next. This is probably the best Survivor album with Dave Bickler behind the microphone, and what a better way to check it out with this excellent Rock Candy remastering.24-bit remastering from original source tapes, 4,000 word essay about the making of the album, interview with band leader Jim Peterik and additional previously unseen photos spread out over a 12 page full color booklet.

Album:

Album recorded in Los Angeles, produced by long time associate Ron Nevison (Heart, Bad Company, Foreigner, etc) and featuring the now world-wide star vocalist Jimi Jamison, the album picks up perfectly from ‘Vital Signs’ boasting a number of classic cuts including the anthemic ‘Rebel Son’, ‘How Much Love’ and heart rending power ballads ‘In Good Faith’ and top 10 US hit single ‘Is This Love’.Jim Peterik and Frankie Sullivan just kept serving up catchy, radio-friendly superb songs, and Jamison gave those songs the heart & soul they needed to become timeless."When Seconds Count", originally released in 1986, is a record choc full of great songs, placing Survivor in the pantheon of primo American AOR units, alongside masters of the craft such as REO Speedwagon, Journey and Foreigner.Reissue specialists Rock Candy put out the definitive version of "When Seconds Count" with this brilliant digital remaster from original source tapes.Additionally features as bonus track ‘Burning Heart’, the US #2 hit single originally featured in the blockbuster Sylvester Stallone movie Rocky IV, but not included on the original release of the album."When Seconds Count" remains an essential album not only for Survivor fans, but for fans of classic AOR and Melodic Rock in general. Yeah, in fact any collection - it does not matter the genre - is not complete without this diamond, and this excellent remastering makes this a mandatory upgrade over any previous versions.

Album:

"Caught In The Game" is the fourth album by American Melodic Rock Gods SURVIVOR, one of the many albums from the band briefly taken out of print in 2009. However, it was 'Remastered & Reloaded' by Rock Candy Records."Caught In The Game" it's the Survivors's last album to-date to feature lead vocalist Dave Bickler, who left due to vocal surgery; despite the fact that he rejoined the band between 1993 and 2000, and again in 2013.From pretty much out of nowhere Survivor scored one of the biggest ever selling hit singles in 1982 with the classic ‘Eye Of The Tiger’, a song written for the blockbuster movie ‘Rocky III’ featuring Sylvester Stallone. Buoyed by that success, the band took stock and regrouped to record their fourth album, the much overlooked "Caught In The Game".Mostly written and rehearsed in a Carpet Warehouse in their native Chicago, then recorded in Los Angeles and produced by guitarist Frankie Sullivan (engineered by future Guns N’ Roses producer Mike Clink), the album is a pithy coalescence of Survivor’s trademark sound and style. Featuring guest appearances by the great Tom Kelly (I-Ten), Mr. Mister's Richard Page and REO Speedwagon's Kevin Cronin, the album feels arresting but smoothly produced, the songs ring with crystal clear clarity, refusing to out stay their welcome with title track ‘Caught In The Game’, ‘What Do You Really Think?’, ‘I Never Stopped Loving You’ and the epic ‘Santa Ana Winds’ standing out from the pack.Amazingly, the album (originally released in 1983) failed to repeat the massive achievement of the ‘Eye Of The Tiger’ record, delivering no hit singles and making only a fleeting appearance on the album charts. It was a shocking development especially when you consider that "Caught In The Game" harbours some of the band’s best songs. Great 24-bit remastering from original source tapes by Rock Candy, including a 4,000 word essay about the making of the album, interview with band leader Jim Peterik, memorabilia and new photos spread out over a 12 page full colour booklet.

Album:

Seventh album from SURVIVOR and their last in the '80s, "Too Hot To Sleep", one of the many albums from the band briefly taken out of print in 2009. However, it was 'Remastered & Reloaded' in all its glory by Rock Candy Records."Too Hot To Sleep" was the last Survivor album to be issued during their Eighties heyday, a record that took the band back to basics with an urgency fuelled by punchy hi-end production values and razor sharp guitar riffs. It was also an album comprised of instantly catchy tunes, big hooks and heavenly vocals courtesy of the great Jimi Jamison.By then the band was reduced to a trio, consisting of Jamison, guitarist Frankie Sullivan and keyboarder Jim Peterik, but in the studio they were joined by additional musicians Bill Syniar on bass and Mickey Curry (from the Bryan Adams Band) on drums.Produced to impressive effect by Frank Filipetti (John Waite, Foreigner, etc), Survivor's three core members recorded the album primarily in New York City, utilising a new rhythm section that included well known drummer Mickey Curry from the Bryan Adams band. The results were spectacular; big, bold and dynamic, with the emphasis on harder rock, yet still retaining their trademark melodic AOR sheen. Some of the band's best tracks are to be found here, such as the immense ballad 'Desperate Dreams', the single 'Didn't Know It Was Love', the rather long (6:45) but excellent 'Here Comes Desire' and the up-tempo 'Can?t Give It Up', the latter a killer rocker full of keys and '80s rolling feel. The top class ballad 'Across The Miles' features and awesome Jimi Jamison performance, and was one of Survivor's biggest AC chart hits.If you look at it from an accountants perspective, in purely commercial terms "Too Hot To Sleep" was less successful than its predecessor 'When Seconds Count' (in truth it barely dented the Billboard Top 200), but along with the aforementioned, 'Premonition' and the truly awesome 'Vital Signs', to these ears at least it represents the best thing the band ever recorded.First of all Sullivan's guitars were pushed much more into the foreground, this time used to define the songs with Peterik's keyboards offering splashes of colour instead of the other way around. This more punchy sound in turn seemed much more suited to Jamison's grittier vocal style, as had been amply demonstrated on the Cobra album 'First Strike' some five years earlier, which if we're honest was probably what landed him the gig in the first place.Fortunately, this revamped approach didn't affect the quality of the songwriting one iota; the hooks, the melodies and the emotional investment remained as strong and vibrant as ever before.Criminally underrated, Survivor's "Too Hot To Sleep" should be considered another Melodic Rock / AOR lover's wet dream. This 24-bit remastering from original source tapes by Rock Candy comes fuller, dynamic and rich in tonality. There's a really interesting 4,000+ word essay about the making of the album and interview with Jim Peterik, plus additional photos spread out over a 16 page full colour booklet.

Album:

The other day I was messin' with some SURVIVOR demos on my player, and thought: why do not make a rarities compilation? The AOR / Melodic Rock Kings deserve it.We have here a lot versions of their mega-hit "Eye Of The Tiger" all of them never commercially released, such as Dave Bickler doing it acoustically, the Jimi Jamison version, an instrumental, etc.Amongst these rarities there's three tracks recorded with Irish shouter Robin McAuley (proposed to be Survivor's lead singer), the only known recorded version of "Velocitized" (later done by Mecca), and various extended mixes (all performed by Survivor). As movie soundtrack collector, I love the "Burning Heart" & "Eye Of The Tiger" mixes only heard in the film Rocky IV, never released on any format and heavily edited from the DVD as source.Of course are included here the exclusive songs only present into the Greatest Hits releases 'Ultimate Survivor' (2004) and 'Greatest Hits 2' (1993), and the track recorded for The Karate Kid soundtrack: "The Moment Of Truth".Talking about the GH exclusive tracks, in the spring of 1993 Peterik and Sullivan reunited with original lead singer Dave Bickler and started recording new songs, two of them, "Hungry Years" co-written by Bickler, and "You Know Who You Are", were included into the re-vamped 'Greatest Hits' from 1993. Both only appeared there. And the 2004 compilation 'Ultimate Survivor' featured three interesting new cuts: the previously unreleased "Rebel Girl" (outtake from Survivor's first self-titled album), "Rockin' Into The Night" also originally discarded as the song was given to .38 Special (which made a hit with it), and "Summer Nights [Long Version]" different from the 'Premonition' vinyl LP.Recommended!!

Line-Up:

Album:

Last of the really good SURVIVOR remastered reissues by Rock Candy Records, their self-titled debut "Survivor" is the one more benefited by the fresh sonic treatment.Survivor's huge hit single ‘Eye Of The Tiger’ has tended to overshadow the band’s body of work, despite them racking up a number of further hits, well known tracks and a string of classic albums. Their brand of melodic yet tough AOR was seen as a central pillar in a wave of hugely successful North American bands; acts such as Journey, Foreigner, REO Speedwagon and Heart were all lighting up the American charts at a time when solid, guitar based rock with enormous hooks and superior vocals was all the rage.No overnight success, Survivor’s history, in various forms, dated back to the late sixties, with leader Jim Peterik forging a path to success by a single minded commitment to well written songs, supported by some of the best players he could lay his hands on; vocalist Dave Bickler and guitarist Frankie Sullivan in particular playing a major part in the band’s developing sound. This, Survivor's debut album, originally issued in 1980 and featuring a young Kim Bassinger on the cover, is an impressive piece of work containing all the elements that would later provide a springboard to international stardom. The songs are dynamic, richly constructed, brightly produced (by Ron Nevison of Led Zeppelin, Heart & UFO fame) and combine just the right blend of melody and muscle. Indeed, the track ‘Youngblood’ has been cited as the prototype for ‘Eye Of The Tiger’, one of a number of tracks that identify the band as superior craftsmen of a sound that later grew to dominate the American airwaves in the 1980s. A classic sound from a classic band.Other highlights include opener 'Somewhere In America', 'Nothing Can Shake Me (From Your Love)' and the excellent 'Rebel Girl' included as bonus track o nthe Rock Candy remaster. 'Rebel Girl' was recorded about a year after the album sessions and released as 45RPM, though the Japanese release of the album on CD includes it as song number six."Survivor" was the band's debut and although there were already signs of their AOR future, this album sounded a lot more straightforward melodic hard than their later releases. Think of early Foreigner and you get the picture. This Rock Candy 24-bit remastering job has rescued some buried guitar harmonics and provide more bass presence, and truly sounds great. Plus, there's the great, not easy to find single 'Rebel Girl' and rare photos / Jim Peterik interview talking about the genesis of Survivor.

Line-Up:

Jim Peterik - guitar, vocals, lead vocals on 6
Frankie Sullivan - guitars, vocals
Dennis Keith Johnson - bass, Moog pedals
Gary Smith - drums, percussion

Album:

As Rock Candy Records did not get the rights for a reissue and none SURVIVOR collection is complete without it, what better than this excellent "Eye Of The Tiger" Japanese remaster pressed on Blu-spec CD2?A true '80s Melodic Rock landmark, "Eye Of The Tiger" marked Survivor’s sales peak driven by the US / UK number 1 hit single title track.'American Heartbeat' also charted well reaching #17 at Billboard, but the whole album was overshadow by the massive impact of title track which was chosen as theme song of the film Rocky III, and since them, become a timeless classic. However, people may have forgotten how strong the other tunes are.Great rocker 'Feels Like Love' gets your adrenaline going, there's a catchy funky groove on 'Hesitation Dance', driving guitars on 'Children of the Night', and primo 80s AOR on 'American Heartbeat'.And of course superb ballads in 'Ever Since The World Began' (a precursor to Vital Signs' The Search Is Over), and the immaculate 'Silver Girl'.For midtempo AOR magic try the brilliant Peterik written 'The One That Really Matters' which should have been a top tenner in the charts.Although Survivor reach the peak of creativity in next album Vital Signs, this "Eye Of The Tiger" is a truly great Melodic Rock record as well. And includes the title track. This Japanese Blu-spec CD2 uses the 2009 remastering which it's the best you can find, where everything sound clear & punchy.

Album:

Jimi Jamison the voice of survivor brings a crisp rock sound like no other this collection is mainly the songs used for the encores at the end of concerts really great songs Im not that Man Anymore is one of my favorites very rich vocals.Great songs and sounds. As a lot of people have mentioned in past reviews, Jimi's voice not perfect, but it is a live performance, so that is to be expected. Personally, I like hearing him not being perfect. It reminds me of what a real singer is and sounds like. No auto tuning necessary for Jimi, his voice is one of a kind and he is missed.

Jimi Jamison – lead vocals
Frankie Sullivan – lead guitars, background vocals
Randy Riley – bass

Album:

Titled “Sucker Punch”, a SURVIVOR concert from the golden era including Jimi Jamison on vocals has been released. As part of the legendary Westwood One FM Broadcasts, the show showcases Survivor at its prime. The sound quality is very good as the recording, as happened with several W1 Broadcasts, was pressed on few vinyls for radio station archive. There’s a misprint on this release, as in fact this Indianapolis show was performed in 1984 New Year’s Eve, while Survivor was on tour supporting the great “Vital Signs”.You have many of the songs from the album here like ‘I Can’t Hold Back’, ‘High on You’, ‘First Night ‘,’Broken Promises’, the title track from previous LP ‘Caught in the Game’, and of course ‘Eye of The Tiger’.It’s Survivor at their prime, with Jamison at his vocal peak as well.A must for fans of the band and classic 80s American Melodic Rock.

Album:

Rock Candy Records specialists did some time ago great remasters to SURVIVOR‘s catalog minus the band’s classic “Eye Of The Tiger“. Finally they got the rights for the reissue and their own remastering treatment, featuring as bonus track the hard to find Special Extended Version of the iconic title track.A true ’80s US Melodic Rock landmark, “Eye Of The Tiger” marked Survivor’s sales peak driven by the US / UK number 1 hit single title track.‘American Heartbeat’ also charted well reaching #17 at Billboard, but the whole album was overshadow by the massive impact of title track which was chosen as theme song of the film Rocky III, and since them, become a timeless classic. The album was produced by guitarist Frankie Sullivan and engineered by Mike Clink, a man who would later go on to produce Guns N’ Roses stardom first record.Although the title track is universally known, most people may have forgotten how strong the other tunes are. This record contains a brace of superbly written and arranged tracks that indicate the band’s talent had reached new levels of creativity.Great rocker ‘Feels Like Love’ gets your adrenaline going, there’s a catchy funky groove on ‘Hesitation Dance’, driving guitars on ‘Children of the Night’, and primo ’80s AOR on ‘American Heartbeat’.And of course superb ballads in ‘Ever Since The World Began’ (a precursor to Vital Signs’ The Search Is Over), and the immaculate ‘Silver Girl’. For midtempo AOR magic try the brilliant Peterik-penned ‘The One That Really Matters’ which should have been a top tenner in the charts.Survivor reach the peak of creativity in next album Vital Signs, but this “Eye Of The Tiger” is a truly great Melodic Rock record as well. This Rock Candy remaster is clean, with a warm bottom end, and perhaps more bright than all the previously available, among the best you can find. And includes a bonus the much sought after ‘Eye Of The Tiger’ Special Extended Version.
