Info:

Zebra is a Hard rock band founded in 1975 in New Orleans, Louisiana. It features Randy Jackson (guitar and vocals), Felix Hanemann (bass, keyboards and vocals) and Guy Gelso (drums and vocals). Their mainstream debut on Atlantic Records was in 1983 with their eponymous album, highlighted by the singles "Tell Me What You Want" and "Who's Behind The Door". Zebra got their start on the US East Coast club circuit, frequently playing at clubs on Long Island, NY.Zebra started their career by playing covers of Led Zeppelin, The Moody Blues and Rush songs; it was their early fans' reaction to their Led Zeppelin renditions that helped convince the band to bring their act to New York. They had introduced their original material into their cover sets years before they were signed to Atlantic Records, including "The La La Song", "Free" and "Bears" (originally entitled "The Bears are Hibernating").Zebra had been noticed by local colleges and even had some of their early original performances recorded by Long Island FM radio station WBAB, culminating in the inclusion of one of their songs on a release of "WBAB Homegrown Album", which commemorated some of the station's best local acts and performances culled from their on-air "Homegrown Hour" program. The band continued to tour throughout the 1980s but put a temporary hold in the early 1990s after being dropped by Atlantic Records. Randy Jackson formed his solo band, Randy Jackson's China Rain, and released its only album in the year 1993. Zebra finally reunited in 1997 and released Zebra IV in 2003, their first album of all-new material since 1986. A DVD of recent live performances, mostly from a show at the House of Blues in New Orleans, was released in the summer of 2007.On July 10, 2010, during their 35th-anniversary performance at New Orleans' Mahalia Jackson Theater, Zebra was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.On October 8, 2012, Zebra was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame.In March 2013, Zebra performed on Cruise To The Edge, a concert cruise with notable progressive rock bands including Yes, Steve Hackett, U.K., Carl Palmer Band, Ambrosia, Saga, Nektar, Glass Hammer, and IOEarth.

Album:

All-4 first ZEBRA albums were released in Japan on a high quality SHM-CD format, remastered and packed in a Cardboard Sleeve mini LP replicating the original artwork. Of special interest is the almost unknown "Zebra Live". It was featured here when released, but now has become pretty hard to find.Requested by one of you in Comments, here we go again. After the third studio album 3.V, despite Atlantic Records lack of support promoting it, Zebra successfully continued touring US & Canada as main act or with the likes of REO Speedwagon, Cheap Trick and more. However, the band's concert prowess - Zebra always had a strong, loyal fan base - did not go unnoticed by their recording label. In 1989, after many fan requests, Atlantic asked if they'd like to release a live album.A couple of shows were recorded on Long Island in November 1989, and the excellent "Zebra Live" album resulted. This is a special recording and quite different from your typical 'live' album, because showcases a band doing more than just 'greatest hits'. In first place, except the couple of singles emanate from the self-titled debut, Zebra does not have 'hits', they were an 'integral album' band.So they were not pressed to play the songs alive as a carbon-copy from the studio versions. We have 6 cuts from the first album, two from the 2nd and three from 3.V, all in a different delivery, some quite re-arranged and with a style and sound that was the result of more than 15 years playing together. At this point of their career, Zebra developed a tight, dynamic musicianship plenty of musicality, melody and energy recalling - at places - Dokken, Night Ranger, Winger and alikes. And we have more: a wonderful cover of Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean" - a concert favorite for many years, and two new previously unreleased songs only available on this album; "She's Waiting For You" and "Last Time", both very good rocking tracks. On stage, Randy Jackson's vocals remind me of Angel's Frank DiMino, his guitar is vibrant according to the late '80s hard rock style, and his bandmates Felix Hanemann & Guy Gelso sound like a 4-back up musicians more than just 2, playing everything from drums, bass, keys, synths, percussion. This fresh remaster is perfect; I own the 1990 release and everything has been enhanced and clarified to the maximum. All sounds pristine yet edgy, and the unnecessarily high crowd noise of the original has been reduced to obtain a balanced live feel.If you don't like live albums, or nor even Zebra itself, do yourself a favor and give it a try to "Zebra Live". You'll be more than pleasantly surprised. It shows an almost different band, vital, dynamic and of course, awesomely hard rockin'.

Guy Gelso - drums, percussion, vocals

Album:

No Tellin' Lies is the second album by New Orleans-based hard rock trio Zebra, released in 1984 by Atlantic Records. The album was a commercial disappointment, peaking at #84. However, "Bears" did get some radio airplay on hard rock stations. The original compact disc version was made in West Germany for the US market in 1984 and is very rare. It was reissued in 2007 as a 2-on-1 CD along with the third Zebra album 3.V, which had been deleted as well. Long out-of-print in single disc form for decades, No Tellin' Lies became available again as a stand-alone CD in 2013, with separate reissues from the UK-based Rock Candy Records and as part of a reissue of the first three Zebra albums in Japan.Although listed as available at various stores, Rock Candy's remastered release of ZEBRA's second album "No Tellin' Lies" has been delayed, at least, in its distribution. A fellow reader of these pages noticed us that all-4 first Zebra albums just has been issued in Japan on a high quality SHM-CD format by a specialized label, remastered in conjunction with Zebra's mastermind Randy Jackson. This 'Arcangelo Records : American Rock Series' SHM-CD not only sounds awesome, it also reproduces the full original artwork (mini LP format) in a glossy package. Even includes the original protector sleeves of the original LP.By the way, this album was issued on Compact Disc in 1984 made in West Germany for US Market, one of the first ever pressed on this format. Incredibly, it never was officially re-released, becoming one of the most rarest compact discs ever made."No Tellin' Lies" remained out-of-print on single disc form for over 25+ years, only reissued in 2007 as a 2 on 1 CD - along with '3.V' another Zebra album which has been deleted as well - and the sound left much to be desired.Coming out of the speakers, on this SHM-CD Zebra's "No Tellin' Lies" never sounded better. This remaster is bringing out things I never heard on the original vinyl LP or cd, perfectly balanced with a superb dynamic range.Talking about "No Tellin' Lies" itself, this is a quality slab of Melodic Hard Rock.Zebra's debut rapidly achieved Gold status and set the scene for this follow up album promptly recorded and issued in 1984. Produced, once again, to exacting standards by Jack ‘Aerosmith’ Douglas, the band took up the challenge by showcasing a concise collection of tracks that easily outgunned their previous work.Refining their powerful sound, the songs are both muscular and melodic, more catchy-chorus focused in a Melodic Hard Rock style & sound that started to emerge in the American scene and soon conquered the world. We have awesome airwavers in the ripping "Wait Until the Summer's Gone" and the unique, AORish "Bears", while "I Don't Like It" and "Takin' a Stance" ring true and rock mightily. The mid-tempo ballad "But No More" simply stands as one of the trio's best songs. As said, this Japanese remaster SHM-CD of ZEBRA's second album "No Tellin' Lies" sounds million bucks. It's not cheap, but worth every cent.

Album:

All-4 first Zebra albums just has been issued in Japan on a high quality SHM-CD format by a specialized label, remastered in conjunction with Zebra's mastermind Randy Jackson. Now we have ZEBRA 3.V (pronounced “three point five”) originally released in 1986, a criminally ignored gem and in my opinion, the band's finest album.By 1986, the Zebra was facing pressure from Atlantic Records to produce a hit album. The self-titled debut went Gold certified, but follower No Tellin’ Lies had weaker sales and a luke-warm reception. For their third release, the band made a concerted effort to create a more widely-accepted commercial album and to this end, Zebra succeeded.ZEBRA 3.V is wonderful Melodic Rock - at times AOR - recording, as said, criminally ignored fundamentally by the fans of the genre itself, which is a shame. The album is rarely mentioned in any favorite list, but the fact is that few Melodic Rock aficionados (old and new) simply never have listened 3.V!There were many reasons for this to happen: by the time 3.V was put on sale, the record company had all but pulled support for the project, dooming it to obscurity despite the fact that includes some of the band’s finest work.Another point (although now may look irrelevant) was the confusing title, using mixed media to resolve a nonsensical phrase: '3.V but read three point five'. In the mid-eighties you needed a high-impact title, instantly recognizable and a more 'glammy' front cover to seduce.Anyway, always the important thing is the good music, and 3.V packs a lot inside.3.V was produced this time by the band itself (in fact Randy Jackson) and most of the songs are strongly keyboard-infused by Felix Hanemann's synths, with catchy melodies and the radio oriented choruses that ruled the 1985-86 period in the genre. You have kicking rockers with a full-fledged, super processed '80s sound such as "Can’t Live Without", the AOR bliss of "He’s Making You The Fool" and "You'll Never Know" or the melodic rock bounce of "You're Only Losing Your Heart" And of course, there's the highlight "Hard Living Without You" mixing the best of both worlds with a stupendous musicality, a song that should be considered a Melodic Rock / AOR classic by now. However, Zebra never would be the 'typical' band in the genre, always aiming to offer the listener more substance; "Time" is a pleasant 12-string acoustic affair with a little progressive scent, perhaps the best piece the band has ever recorded. Even with a heavier chorus, the song maintains a melancholy mood throughout and it contains a brilliant ending addendum section which really brings the whole track home. Then there's the inspiring and uplifting "Your Mind’s Open", a great composition based on a really original keyboard arrangement (also played by Hanemann), but not in the frenzy stabbing way, just much more in an orchestrated build providing an excellent aural melody. And later, we find some kind of a buried diamond; "About to Make the Time", a genial acoustic / electric driven song with a steady riff and good bass presence throughout. It is a philosophical song which establishes a long pattern that works very well with repetition and should have been placed as the last song on the album – it would have been a gem of a closer. This could be another mistake in "3.V", a wrong song sequence. But as said, always the important thing is the good music and this album is plenty of it."3.V" would be Zebra's last studio album for 16 years, a swan song of sorts as they spent their last creative energy on this final run at fame, and certainly delivered a great recording. This very good three-piece band did not spend a long time on the US national scene, nor did they have tremendous success while they were on that scene. But there is no doubt that Zebra made some unique and original music while they were there. They are, in a sense, a rare and secret gem of a band which fewer have enjoyed than legitimately should have, especially this "3.V", a quite brilliant album which deserves to be discovered not only by the new generations, also by ol' time Melodic Rock / AOR fans that ignored it at the time.Superb Japanese SHM-CD remaster. All tracks were written by Randy Jackson.

The album features all original material, with the exception of "Slow Down" (a Larry Williams tune best remembered for a 1964 cover version by the Beatles) injected at mid-song with much of the second stanza of Carl Perkins' "Blue Suede Shoes", altered at its end: "Knock me down, step on my face, slander my name all over the place; do anything that you want to do, what are you tryin' to do?" The album also features two hits which received national airplay: "Who's Behind The Door?" and "Tell Me What You Want". On the strength of both singles the album became one of Atlantic's fastest-selling debut albums ever[1] and peaked at #29, attaining a level of commercial success the band was unable to repeat on subsequent releases."Take Your Fingers From My Hair" was covered by Dream Theater for the special edition of their tenth studio album, Black Clouds & Silver Linings. This album, along with the follow-up No Tellin' Lies, was remastered and reissued by UK-based company Rock Candy Records in 2013.

The first, self-titled album by ZEBRA has been reissued by Rock Candy with their usual “Special Deluxe Collector’s Edition” form, in a fully remastered sound shaped from 24 BIT digital technology. Zebra had been together since forming in the mid-seventies in New Orleans. Led by guitarist, vocalist and primary songwriter Randy Jackson, the group started to gain notoriety when they migrated to Long Island, NY and furiously played in that area’s club and college scene.Their music impressed Atlantic Records, who signed the group to a five album deal right out of the gate in late 1982.This seemed like a wise business deal for the suits as “Zebra” became the fastest selling debut record in Atlantic Records history when it sold over 75,000 copies in its first week and spent eight months on the Billboard charts, peaking at number 29 (Gold certified).Among the strong nine tracks, the album spawned the successful singles – now classics – “Tell Me What You Want” and “Who’s Behind The Door”, skillfully produced by veteran Jack Douglas (Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick) obtaining a clear and polished sound.I always loved the melodic dynamics of leader Randy Jackson, as he fused some of the best arena rock of the ’70s with the melodic rock, hard and rock&pop sensibilities of the ’80s.With the exception of the out-of-place, boogie-rock cover song (“Slow Down”), all the tracks on Zebra’s debut are winners.Zebra followed up their this one with the more commercially oriented 1984 album No Tellin’ Lies – also remastered by Rock Candy too.

Bio:

Album:

Remastered album No Tellin' Lies is the second album by New Orleans-based hard rock trio Zebra, released in 1984 by Atlantic Records.

Album:

Rock Candy records reissued some time ago the first two ZEBRA albums, and now it’s time for their obliquely titled third record “3.V“(a reference to how long it had taken to record it), ‘Remastered & Reloaded’ with a brilliant sound.By 1986, the Zebra was facing pressure from Atlantic Records to produce a hit album. The self-titled debut went Gold certified, but follower No Tellin’ Lies had weaker sales although the quality of material was just as impressive. For their third release, the band made a concerted effort to create a more widely-accepted commercial album and to this end, Zebra succeeded.ZEBRA 3.V is wonderful Melodic Rock album – at times AOR, at times light progressive – with a lush production typical of the era (1986) criminally ignored fundamentally by the fans of the genre itself, which is a shame. The album is rarely mentioned in any favorite list, but the fact is that few Melodic Rock aficionados (old and new) simply never have listened 3.V!There were many reasons for this to happen: by the time “3.V” was put on sale, the record company had all but pulled support for the project, dooming it to obscurity despite the fact that includes some of the band’s finest work.Another point (although now may look irrelevant) was the confusing title, using mixed media to resolve a nonsensical phrase: ‘3.V but read three point five’. In the mid-eighties you needed a high-impact title, instantly recognizable and a more ‘glammy’ front cover to seduce.Anyway, always the important thing is the good music, and 3.V packs a lot inside.“3.V” was the first produced album by the band (in fact Randy Jackson) and the most songs are strongly keyboard-infused by Felix Hanemann’s synths, with catchy melodies and the radio oriented choruses that ruled the 1985-86 period in the genre. You have kicking rockers with a full-fledged, super processed ’80s sound such as “Can’t Live Without”, the AOR bliss of “He’s Making You The Fool” and “You’ll Never Know” or the melodic rock bounce of “You’re Only Losing Your Heart”.And of course, there’s the highlight “Hard Living Without You” mixing the best of both worlds with a stupendous musicality, a song that should be considered a Melodic Rock / AOR classic by now. However, Zebra never would be the ‘typical’ band in the genre, always aiming to offer the listener more substance; “Time” is a pleasant 12-string acoustic affair with a little progressive scent, perhaps the best piece the band has ever recorded. Even with a heavier chorus, the song maintains a melancholy mood throughout and it contains a brilliant ending addendum section which really brings the whole track home. Then there’s the inspiring and uplifting “Your Mind’s Open”, a great composition based on a really original keyboard arrangement (also played by Hanemann), but not in the frenzy stabbing way, just much more in an orchestrated build providing an excellent aural melody. And later, we find some kind of a buried diamond; “About to Make the Time”, a genial acoustic / electric driven song with a steady riff and good bass presence throughout. It is a philosophical song which establishes a long pattern that works very well with repetition and should have been placed as the last song on the album – it would have been a gem of a closer. This could be another mistake in “3.V”, a wrong song sequence. But as said, always the important thing is the good music and this album is plenty of it.“3.V” would be Zebra’s last studio album for 16 years, a swan song of sorts as they spent their last creative energy on this final run at fame, and certainly delivered a great recording. This very good three-piece band did not spend a long time on the US national scene, nor did they have tremendous success while they were on that scene. But there is no doubt that Zebra made some unique and original music while they were there. They are, in a sense, a rare and secret gem of a band which fewer have enjoyed than legitimately should have, especially this “3.V”, a quite brilliant album which deserves to be discovered not only by the new generations, also by ol’ time Melodic Rock / AOR fans that ignored it at the time.Compared with the last Japanese remaster, this Rock Candy treatment comes a bit more bright at the low end, really well balanced and punchy.
