Bio:

L.A. Guns is an American hard rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1983. As of 2013, the lineup consists of Phil Lewis (vocals), Michael Grant (guitar), Scott Griffin (bass) and Steve Riley (drums, percussion). The first incarnation of the group was formed by Tracii Guns in 1983, but disbanded in 1985 following its merger with fellow Los Angeles group Hollywood Rose, becoming the first lineup of Guns N' Roses. The same year, the group was reformed by Guns and singer Paul Black adding Mick Cripps and Nickey Alexander. Black would soon be replaced by former Girl singer Phil Lewis while former Faster Pussycat bassist Kelly Nickels was added to the group. Later, Alexander would be replaced by former W.A.S.P. drummer Steve Riley with this being known as the "classic lineup" of L.A. Guns. They achieved moderate chart success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, the group went through numerous lineup changes (with Riley being the most consistent member) and failed to regain mainstream attention. The "classic lineup" of the group would reunite in 1999 and began recording new material. However, the group continued to change lineups and Guns eventually left to form the hard rock supergroup Brides of Destruction with Nikki Sixx of Mötley Crüe in 2002. L.A. Guns continued without Guns, bringing in guitarist Stacey Blades, however, following his decision to put Brides of Destruction on hiatus in 2006, Guns formed The Tracii Guns Band. The group's lineup consisted of former L.A. Guns members Black, Alexander as well as Jeremy Guns (though the lineup would eventually change), with the group eventually changing their name to L.A. Guns. Both groups continued to record and tour under the L.A. Guns moniker until 2012, when the Tracii Guns led version of the group disbanded. To date, L.A. Guns have released ten studio albums – L.A. Guns (1988); Cocked & Loaded (1989); Hollywood Vampires (1991); Vicious Circle (1995); American Hardcore (1996); Shrinking Violet (1999); Man in the Moon (2001); Waking the Dead (2002); Tales from the Strip (2005); and Hollywood Forever (2012), two extended plays – Cuts (1992); Wasted (1998) as well as a number of live and compilation albums.

Album:

Cocked & Loaded is the second album from the band L.A. Guns, and their first to reach gold certification. The album includes the hit "The Ballad of Jayne".This was the first L.A. Guns album on which Steve Riley actually played drums. Although he was in the band photo and listed as a band member in the liner notes of the band's first album, L.A. Guns (because by then he was an official member of the band), Nickey "Beat" Alexander played drums on that album. The album features guest appearances by Cheap Trick members Robin Zander and Rick Nielsen. In 2006, Zander and Nielsen would also appear on the similarly titled Cocked and Loaded by the Revolting Cocks.Rock Candy Records have reissued two classic L.A. Guns albums, 1988's self-titled debut and 1989's 'Cocked & Loaded'. The releases come with all the usual Rock Candy trimmings: 24-bit remastering from original source tapes, weighty essay's about the making of the album, full artist involvement, new interviews, enhanced artwork and additional photos spread out over large full colour booklets. If you're looking for the Godfather of the early eighties LA rock scene, then guitarist Tracii Guns is your man. A hustler, a human dynamo and a hugely talented band leader, Guns broad-shouldered his way onto the Hollywood strip with a succession of fledgling acts, including Hollywood Rose a band that evolved into the legendary Guns N' Roses. Forming L.A. Guns, the band was solidified with the addition of British front man Phil Lewis, fresh from the well respected glam rock band Girl and former W.A.S.P. drummer Steve Riley. Recorded in Los Angeles with producer Jim Faraci (Ratt, Poison, Femme Fatale), the results were hugely encouraging, the band whipping up a frenzy of low-slung sleaze in the finest style, going on to sell over a half a million units. The platinum selling album 'Cocked & Loaded' was recorded in Los Angeles with seasoned producers Tom Werman (Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, Cheap Trick) alongside Duane Barron and John Purdell (Poison, Ozzy Osbourne, Heart) and featured guest appearances from Ted Nugent, Derek St. Holmes, Robin Zander and Rick Nielson. It confirmed that L.A. Guns were more than just a flash in the pan by storming the US charts and producing two bonafide hit singles with "Never Enough" and "The Ballad Of Jayne". Stylistically their no-nonsense style of razor sharp riffs and tough-guy bravado makes it one of the most comprehensive and exciting records to have emerged from the glam/sleaze movement.

Album:

The two first releases by L.A. GUNS 'Remastered & Reloaded' by Rock Candy Records. Both are great, killer hard rock plates, but this, L.A. Guns self-titled debut is regarded by many as their best, without a doubt one of the best representations of the Sunset Strip Californian '80s Hard Rock.If you're looking for the Godfather of the early Eighties L.A. hard rock scene, then guitarist Tracii Guns is your man. A hustler, a human dynamo and a hugely talented band leader, Tracii broad-shouldered his way onto the Hollywood Strip with a succession of fledgling acts - including Hollywood Rose, a band that evolved into the legendary Guns N’ Roses.Following a disagreement with Axl, he left (replaced by Slash) and immediately formed L.A. Guns, a unit that was now under his sole control and direction. The band was solidified with the addition of British born frontman Phil Lewis, fresh from the well respected glam rock band Girl (that also featured future Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen) and former W.A.S.P. drummer Steve Riley.Signing to PolyGram the band recorded their debut album on home turf in Los Angeles with producer Jim Faraci (Ratt, Poison, Femme Fatale). The results were hugely encouraging, the band whipping up a frenzy of low-slung sleazy in the finest style.Originally issued in 1988, the album surprised even their most dedicated supporters by quickly going gold and selling a cool half million units in the US alone. Amongst a brace of classic tracks, including ‘Sex Action’, ‘Electric Gypsy’ and ‘Bitch Is Back’ is a surprising cover of the Girl anthem ‘Hollywood Teaze’, a track allowing Phil Lewis to link past ambitions with his newly adopted home of Los Angeles."L.A. Guns" is a terrific hard rock album. This 'is' a Tracii Guns album, the man is on fire with hot razor riffs, monster solos and lots of guitar licks / sounds. And the songs are moving, fun, party-ready but with a heavy approach. The Rock Candy remaster really blows out of the water the quite thin original CD transfer, and here everything comes out punchy & big.

Line-Up:

Phil Lewis - lead vocals
Tracii Guns - lead guitar

Kelly Nickels - bass guitar
Nickey Alexander - drums

Album:

The Phil Lewis and Steve Riley version of L.A. GUNS (the other one is led by guitarist Tracii Guns), are releasing their new album "Hollywood Forever" produced by Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, Cinderella, Van Halen), where former L.A. Guns member Kelly Nickels makes a special appearance playing bass and providing backing vocals."Hollywood Forever" continues with the more contemporary hard rock style of the band's last recording, centered on the big hooks and infectious melodies. The sound is modern and vital, with a vibrant impact. There are glimpses of the sound of old (eighties), mainly on the mid-tempo rockers and the ballads. Phil Lewis' vocals sound great on this new album, and kudos to guitarist Stacey Blades for his fantastic solos and memorable riffs -- his effort helped this album tremendously."Hollywood Forever" opens with the title track, which could have been taken from 'Hollywood Vampires' (1991). It has that early nineties vibe, with a killer riff driving the song into a classic hard rock pandemonium.Follower "You Better Not Love Me" is more melodic, constructed over a simple tadem of guitars, but effective and catchy. "Eel Pie" has a modern sonic approach, a bit boring track, but the band quickly retrieves the grip on the moody "Sweet Mystery"."Vine Street Shimey" is a vintage L.A. Guns effort that could have evolved from the 'Cocked & Loaded' sessions, while "Venus Bomb" has a fast-paced and welcomed gritty attitude.Other highlights are "Dirty Black Night", which has a great riff, furious solo and a heavy groove to it, and "Queenie", a bluesy rocker that works to Lewis' strengths. It's probably one of the best things L.A. Guns has done in the past decade. There's also an interesting cover of "Araña Negra", originally done by the psychedelic rock band Bicicletas, that is completely sung in Spanish.L.A Guns have never done a bad album, and "Hollywood Forever" is not an exception, this is the kind of CD's that puts a wide smile on your face. The band still rocks and on the new album there are very nice songs which remunerate to be listened. A couple of fillers though, but that's inevitable on an album containing 14 tracks.Vocalist Phil Lewis, who owns one of those highly distinctive voices shines here with easily some of his best whaling ever and also the six-string pyrotechnics of Tracy Blades deserve an extra mention. It took mister Lewis some time to fill the rather large sized shoes of founding member Tracii Guns but with Blades (who's guitar playing is less bluesy than his predecessors but in no way less effective) that empty spot is now more than adequately taken. Many releases often loose much of their appeal because of lousy production jobs but L.A. Guns have once again managed to avoid that from happening by employing the services of renowned producer Andy Johns. If you’re already a fan of the band you can fork out the cash with your eyes closed and if you are yet to get your first taste of L.A. Guns, this is the perfect opportunity to find out why these guys managed to stick around for so long.

Album:

Tales from the Strip is the ninth L.A. Guns studio album, released in 2005.It is the second album of L.A. Guns with guitarist Stacey Blades, the first being the cover album Rips the Covers Off released the previous year. I looked forward to picking this CD up with such anticipation, I actually bought one on Amazon on August 12. But, I just couldn’t wait those few extra days and ended up buying it at the store as well to hear it a second early. Do I regret it? Not at all! What can I possibly say about this record other than the standard, “It rocks, dude?” Quite frankly, that sums it up. But, let me get into more detail about what is so great about this record.First, every song is at least good. Some are better than others but there isn’t a stinker on here that will require you to get up and change tracks because your ears are bleeding. The best songs off the record, or at least the ones that jump out at me at this moment after having listened to it all the way through 3 times, are the opening track of “It Don’t Mean Nothing,” “Electric Neon Sunset,” “Gypsy Soul,” Skin,” and “(Can’t Give You) Anything But Love.” But, no song is “bad.” As a matter of fact, I chose those songs because they are the ones that I most clearly remember. Any song could really be my favorite off the record. Some are concerned about the lack of Tracii Guns on this record. I say, “Tracii who?” Tracii‘s off trying to be modern and performing piss poor punk music in South America somewhere. Tracii‘s a great guitarist, don’t get me wrong. But, as much as I pick on Steven Tyler for being vocally shot, Tracii Guns is creatively shot and it’s a real shame. But Stacey Blades fits the bill nicely and damn does he play a mean guitar.Yes, all you ska and punk fans, this record has guitar solos! Guitar solos are instrumental solos performed by good musicians that add to the songs. I think the lack of guitar solos in the modern rock scene is directly related to the lack of talented guitarists. Stacey‘s got all the talent in the world! Is it better than Waking The Dead? I can’t say yes and I can’t say no. It’s simply different. Waking The Dead was a slightly more modern record and, at times, a slightly heavier one. Tales From The Strip is still heavy but sounds more like what most of us remember L.A. Guns as being. I love Waking The Dead and also love Tales From The Strip. How neither of these records were blockbuster hits is beyond me. Or, maybe they’re just too good and piss poor bands like Jimmy Eat World would be exposed as piss poor in comparison. The last song on the disc is “(Can’t Give You) Anything But Love.” It’s clear to me that a lot of love went into this album. And, they did give me something better than love. They gave me a fantastic album that you all should buy.

Bio:

Album:

Here’s the never seen Bad Reputation Records remastered reissue of L.A. GUNS‘ iconic first album in their ‘Collector Series / Remastered with Bonus‘ reissue series, including 6 bonus tracks. The songs from “L.A. Guns” self titled debut were drawn from the band’s formative years, hot , dirty rock n’ roll with all the Sunset Strip magic. Songwriting credits were listed for all band members, as well as former lead vocalist Paul Black.British Phil Lewis – who had originally sang in the cult band Girl that also featured Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen – replaced former Black months before the recording of the album. And results were great.A wild group of outcasts from various other L.A. bands – guitarist Tracii Guns being the original “guns” in Guns n’ Roses, drummer Steven Riley had recently vacated the stool with shock-kings W.A.S.P., and Lewis with Girl in Europe – L.A. GUNS brought a wild sleazy hard rock to the table in the midst of the hair metal explosion. The union of such an unsavory cast of characters could only result in a wildly over-the-top rock & roll album which rocked with a bile and fury not seen since Mötley Crüe’s ‘Shout at the Devil’.Ass kicking anthems like “No Mercy,” “Sex Action,” “One More Reason,” and the marvelous “Bitch Is Back” slap the listener silly while still making room for slightly more commercial but equally hot offerings such as “Electric Gypsy” and “Down in the City.”And despite clashing terribly with its surroundings, “One Way Ticket” is an, solid effective power ballad.A classic album from the ’80s, with a remastering more in vein with the ’90s type.Highly Recommended

Album:

Hollywood Vampires is the third studio album by the American glam metal band L.A. Guns, released in 1991.French reissue label Bad Reputation has been doing a great job releasing ‘Collector Series / Remastered with Bonus‘, with the main attraction being the addition of bonus tracks or bonus disc, making these reissues the ‘definitive expanded versions’. In a Rock Candy Records fashion, these are official remasters in arrangement with the original recording companies.Their own remastered version of “Hollywood Vampires“, for many the best L.A. GUNS album, comes with 5 bonus tracks.“Hollywood Vampires” is one of the most complete L.A. GUNS albums, presenting various shades of the band and is representative of the late ’80s / early ’90s US hard rock sound & style, with riff-laden songs and big choruses on every song. The album starts with “Over the Edge”, which was used in the film Point Break, and since then it’s plenty of catchy tunes such as “Kiss My Love Goodbye”, the hooky “Some Lie 4 Love”, “My Koo Ka Choo” and the classy from the era ‘na nanana’ melody of “Dirty Luv”.There’s melodic midtempo / ballads in “Crystal Eyes”, “It’s Over Now” and the retro-style of “I Found You”, attempting to repeat the earlier success of their major single ‘The Ballad of Jayne’.The meticulous production gives the album a punch typical of the period (1990-92); a full sound, with lots of background harmony vocals, layered guitars and additional keyboard arrangements. If “Hollywood Vampires” had been released just a year earlier, and gotten a good push, it could have maintained the momentum that the band built with its first two albums and even expanded their fan base.In a perfect world, “Hollywood Vampires” should have easily made L.A. Guns household names in 1991 with equal success to Guns N’ Roses Use Your Illusion.Sadly, for L.A. Guns, and so many other great bands of the period, their brand of ultra-hooky hard rock was soon to be replaced with angst ridden grunge from the Pacific Northwest. But all of us know that the US rock albums recorded between 1990/92 are fantastic, and this Bad Reputation remaster handled by Jean Yves-Legrand (Giant, Cinderella) sound million bucks. This release includes as bonus various live versions of the album tracks recorded at the era (great quality) and to make it more juicy we have added the original Japanese bonus track. The definitive, most complete version available of “Hollywood Vampires”, the one to treasure.

Album:

Hollywood Vampires is the third release from iconic sleaze rockers L.A. Guns. It follows their two most influential albums, 1988’s self-titled release, and 1989’s Cocked And Loaded. Each album had middling success on the charts and sales wise, peaking at #50 and #38 respectively on the Billboard Hot 200 charts. Hollywood Vampires maxed out at #42 on the same chart in 1991. According to the mostly reliable Wikipedia, the singles “Kiss My Love Goodbye” and “It’s Over Now” would peak at number 16 and 25 respectively on the Mainstream Rock Chart, while “It’s Over Now” maxed out at number 62 on the Billboard Hot 100.Right from the opening song “Over The Edge”, you knew this would be a different L.A. Guns. Buddhist gongs and Asian laments set the tone for something completely different from Cocked And Loaded. Hollywood Vampires is mellower, and in my opinion, way over produced for the band’s style and legacy. One may call it a “maturing of sound” but I cry shenanigans to that. The time was mid ’91 and the record companies surely saw grunge on its way. Bands like Skid Row with Slave to the Grind and Van Halen with For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge were exploring a harder sound, but for some reason L.A. Guns chose a different route.Sure, there are still some interesting tracks. “Some Lie For Love” and “Kiss My Love Goodbye” revert to songs that could have worked on Cocked And Loaded. “Here It Comes” stands out in its own right as a sleaze throwback, as does “Wild Obsession.” But I find other tracks like “Dirty Love” or “My Koo Ka Choo” to be too forced and lacking in what I consider to be organic writing. And frankly, there are too many ballads or ballad-like songs for me to appreciate a good long listen of Hollywood Vampires without skipping all over the place. Let’s face it. “The Ballad Of Jayne” was a masterpiece and L.A. Guns have tried to recreate it several ways without success. “I Found You” is a plodding bore. “Crystal Eyes” has some emotion to it, which I can appreciate, but still comes across as your average power ballad. “It’s Over Now” is acceptable. I don’t mind that one so much. It’s just kind of “there”, neither a ballad, nor sleaze-worthy.Ultimately, I look back on Hollywood Vampires with melancholy. It wasn’t what the previous two L.A. Guns offerings were anything close to. I’ve listened to this album repeatedly over the past week, and find myself longing for some “Sex Action” or “Rip N Tear.” And, after sampling 1994’s Vicious Circle and other latter day recordings, it sure seems to me that Hollywood Vampires was a misplaced anomaly.

Bio:

Album:

For every L.A. GUNS’ fan, myself included, “The Missing Peace” is one of the most awaited albums of the year. To be released by Frontiers Music next week, it just appeared in Japan with a lovely acoustic version of the song 'Christine' as bonus track. In fact, every '80s hard rock aficionado has been waiting for the L.A. Guns comeback, with original guitarist Tracii Guns and vocalist Phillip Lewis reunited in the band. There’s a change of lineup, with Shane Fitzgibbon instead of Steve Riley at drums. All is rounded out by Johnny Martin on bass with Michael Grant on guitar as a touring member.“The Missing Peace” show us how good L.A. Guns always has been. For some musician we can tell that there is no rest for the wicked, this is the case for L.A. Guns that formed in 1983, and continue to rock their style 2017, pure sleazy hard rock for all their fans’ joy. With them, the sound of golden Sunset Strip and street years never end and we can feel this atmosphere on this new album as well.“It’s All the Same to Me” it’s such a great opener track, this piece is the essence of the band, it contains all the elements we’ve grown accustomed to, pronounced guitar riffs, rapid pace and so '80s in somehow, considering how fresh and modern sound it is.“Speed”, one of the singles L.A. Guns released, is pure power and authentic sleazy Hard Rock, this track gives us the idea how alive L.A. Guns still are, rejuvenated if they ever had a lack of energy in their career. This song is one of the coolest on the album, so catchy. The following “A Drop of Bleach” has the same spirit, less easy but punchy, with heavy guitars and tight rhythm, just another good piece of classic hard rock.“Sticky Fingers” doesn’t skip a beat, in fact, this track is quite heavy and melodic at the same time, respectable and massive music, where we can feel the band’s mood.“Christine”, the other single released, remind so much of a Guns n’ Roses sound, but it turns to be a good song anyway, nothing new but another very positive proof for Phillip Lewis’s voice.A pretty good song is “Baby Gotta Fever”, the right piece to listen to a live show and scream the refrain altogether with the band, shaking and joying it. Absolutely a dazzling tune. “Kill It or Die” remind once again of a certain trademark LA Sleazy style, a solid track with a taste of the Seventies.A change of pace comes via “Don’t Bring a Knife to a Gunfight”: this is L.A. Guns stylishness with something new like a Reckless Love sound in comparison and somehow it’s like the band put their self out there.More hard n' heavy comes with “The Devil Made Me Do It”, so speedy and fresh and definitely in the perfect L.A. Guns mood and bravado. This song is absolutely spewing from Phil Lewis and Tracii Gun’s soul.So fine is title track “The Missing Peace”, delivering an emotion of that only LA Guns is known more, pure passionate rock. “Gave It All Away”, another great song, a brilliant rocker that nearly reaches epic sounds with a killer riff all over.Sounding invigorated and hungry, L.A. Guns are back in a sparkling shape. While "The Missing Peace" is not as instant as their classic albums, it is still a mighty fine record that gets better with each spin.A great attempt to recapture the sound of a band who epitomized '80s US sleazy hard rock, rocking with the same enthusiasm as ever.

Album:

After more than a decade apart, Tracii Guns and Phil Lewis reunited under the L.A. Guns banner and in 2017, released arguably the most critically praised album of their catalog, "The Missing Peace". Landing at #12 Top Record Label Independent Current Albums, #17 Top Current Rock Albums and #47 Top Current Albums on the Billboard charts in the US, plus numerous international charts, clearly the most important critics, the fans, agreed with the consensus of how truly great their new studio album is.With a new-found energy and the enthusiasm of the then imminent release of "The Missing Peace", L.A. Guns stormed onto the stage in Milan, IT for the 2017 edition of the Frontiers Rock Festival and took absolutely no prisoners, packing the set front to back with stone cold classics and soon to be classics. This once in a lifetime performance was recorded and will be released on CD, DVD and Blu-ray formats. The album, which is aptly named "Made in Milan", will be released March 23 via Frontiers Music Srl.This current incarnation of the band has been touring non-stop and the cohesiveness of the unit, not to mention Phil's stunning and unique vocals and Guns' mind-bending guitar playing are on full display here. A must hear and listen for all fans of the band, both new and old school!

Album:

A mere two years after their comeback album “The Missing Peace” LA GUNS have returned with their latest studio offering “The Devil You Know” with vocalist Phil Lewis and guitarist extraordinaire Tracii Guns keeping the flame burning bright with almost non stop touring and a creative surge of studio work, once again they have delivered another 11 tracks for this release. With a count of 1,2,3,4 introducing opening number “RAGE” its a frantic punk like pace that oozes out the speakers and smacks you straight between the eyes and reminds the fans that the group have lost none of their pissed off venom as the years have passed. With this angst ridden nasty opener you get all the trademark LA GUNS, and they can be relied upon to deliver, from the catchy as hell chorus and Tracii Guns inventive guitar licks, and incendiary drumming swirling together to give a collective thumbs up and triumphant start to The Devil You Know.“STAY AWAY” with its crunching guitar intro that you can feel in your stomach is less hectic than the opening number but contains all the sleazy swagger of yesteryear with Phil Lewis sounding just the way he use to in the bands hey day hitting the high notes like they are going out of fashion. When I saw the band live last year I was mesmerised and full of praise for Tracii Guns his guitar work was at times spellbinding and the solo on “STAY AWAY” takes me back to that night, sounding like a engine roaring it is just an amazing sexy wall of musicianship.“LOADED BOMB” with its rattle snare introduction accompanied with a LED ZEPPELIN guitar riff is just damn rite filthy and is up there with any dirty sounding MOTLEY CRUE song you care to mention, with plenty of funk and rock mixed up with slide guitar this experimental track throws a curve ball into the mix before it all breaks down into a quiet section before kicking back in. I don’t think the group would be offended if I was to say they were wearing some influences on their sleeves with the song but the most important thing is how they have kept it sounding so fresh.Title track “THE DEVIL YOU KNOW” is very much a surprise with the tempo slowed down with a doom ridden crunchy pace with Phil Lewis adding his dark scary vocals, slowly the tempo starts to build with a clattering of metal percussion before that insane guitarist is allowed to reek havoc again, a very inventive song and way different from what you would expect LA GUNS to put their name too but yet again its place among the 11 tracks is very welcome indeed.“GOING HIGH” with its smooth rock n roll classic style and some superb lead vocals stretching “Phil Lewis” to his very limit is a real gem and so far my favourite song from the album with so much aggression and anger that many bands half their age couldn’t hold a light to, in fact the pace of the song with it being mid tempo adds to the dramatics rather than it being heads down 100 MPH effort.“GONE HONEY” and “DON’T NEED TO WIN” 2 songs back to back showcase vintage LA GUNS with the sleaze and the swagger and those tongue in cheek lyrics that we have all come to love, of course most importantly the good feel feeling that music can give the listener. Listening to this album its almost like the enjoyment has been released from the studio onto the album.A nice drum introduction welcomes in “DOWN THAT HOLE” with more slide guitar and a flowing groove gets the juices in overdrive and before long you find yourself tapping a beat along with the song. Very simplistic and easy arrangement but mighty effective with its chorus that repeats itself and refuses to leave.“ANOTHER SEASON IN HELL” wow what a way to finish the album proper, clocking in at 6 and a half minutes, with its soothing vocal/guitar intro you can feel it brooding and brewing into something huge, a fantastic vocal performance with lyrics being sung with meaning and feeling it just draws the listener in, then a well crafted guitar solo that to these ears is just beautiful and echo the vocals perfectly.I don’t confess to be a massive LA GUNS fan but from what I have heard and seen from the group over the years “ANOTHER SEASON IN HELL” has to be one of the best things they have ever recorded a fantastic climax to a cracking album, from a artist that in 2019 that are still so relevant. Such a pleasure and a joy to review something so good.

Album:

So, I say, "Dude. L.A. Guns is coming out with a new album. Renegades." Wherein, you say, "Which L.A. Guns would that be." A very good question and so the conundrum before us. This would be the Steve Riley version of L.A. Guns, as opposed to the Tracii Guns and Phil Lewis quintet. (Of course, Guns and Lewis are currently suing Riley over the band name.Besides Riley, this L.A. Guns, formed in 2018, also features Kelly Nickels (bass) and Scotty Griffin (drums), both of whom have played with other versions of L.A. Guns. The odd man out is vocalist and rhythm guitarist Kurt Frohlich who apparently has had no (musical) affiliation with L.A. Guns in the past. Their latest album, Renegades, is the first for Riley's L.A. Guns.Aside from the confusing controversy, one thing remains the same: Riley's L.A. Guns plays melodic hard rock, perhaps with a metal edge, in the great Eighties Sunset Strip tradition. They have that street wise attitude, but more importantly that great sound the roared through a decade taking no prisoners. L.A. Guns has the riffs, rhythm and groove, memorable melodies, catchy refrains, and slick guitar solos. For his part, Frohlich is a fine rock vocalist, singing clean and easily carrying the song melodies. As for the songs, you'll find some strong and fast riff rockers with Why Ask Why, Renegades, and the loose and sleazy Well Oiled Machine. The first single off the album, Crawl is simply catchy melodic hard rock, thanks to the sweet groove from the riffs and rhythm section, and Nickels' fine bass solo in the center. Something more hard and heavy comes with Witchcraft with its strong riffs and thumping rhythm section.Being a classic rock band, are there ballads? You betchya. Two. You Can't Walk Away and Would. The former is heavier, moving slower, yet you can hear a strong bass line, some acoustic guitar, and a lingering guitar line that leads to a solo. Frohlich brings the vocal harmony to add some softness. Would is softer, moving mostly upon voice over acoustic guitar with the bass and drums rising to add rhythmic emphasis to propel the tune. All said, with Renegades, Steve Riley's L.A. Guns offers a fine album of genuine and classic melodic hard rock. Perhaps its the first shot over bow in the likely impending L.A. Guns feud. Recommended.

Bio:

Album:

Long running hard rockers L.A. Guns have announced the release of their new studio album, "Checkered Past". Written and recorded while the world was still in the grips of the corona virus pandemic, the new studio album sees Tracii Guns, Phil Lewis and company continuing with the darker lyrical tone of the preceding studio albums, "The Devil You Know" and "The Missing Peace", while incorporating their classic rock influences into the mix. Heavier songs are mixed with bluesier, boogie inducing tracks and dark, introspective ballads, often harkening back to the first three albums the band made, but also pushing the band forward. When fans absorb the album as a whole, they'll see that the track listing is divided up into 'sets' or 'suites', where a sonic style is explored across multiple songs before moving on to the next, making for a remarkable listening experience.Guns, Lewis, bassist Johnny Martin, guitarist Ace Von Johnson and drummer Scot Coogan will hit the road in support of the album with announcements coming soon about more dates. Road dogs that they are, the band is itching to get back out on the road and showcase these songs in the environment they so love, the live stage. As the revival of the classic 80s hard rock and heavy metal scene continues unabated here in the 21st century, one reunion had been at the top of the wishlist of many a fan for a long time: the songwriting combination of Tracii Guns and Philip Lewis under the L.A. Guns banner. What once seemed like a distant memory with no hope of returning has now come around and fans have been rewarded with two new studio albums, two live albums and a special Christmas covers EP since 2017. Clearly the creative fires of Guns and Lewis are burning bright.Since the self-titled debut in 1988 to the widely praised comeback albums "The Missing Peace" and "The Devil You Know", L.A. Guns - led by Tracii Guns and Phil Lewis - have always delivered solid rock 'n' roll to the fans. This current incarnation of the band has been touring non-stop and the cohesiveness of the unit, not to mention Phil's stunning and unique vocals and Guns' mind-bending guitar playing are on full display here. A must hear and listen for all fans of the band, both new and old.L.A. Guns never looked like the pretty poster boys that so many of their peers did, but more the band that you would be terrified to bump into in an alley as they would likely be carrying switchblades and ready for a fight. But despite having many songs to back up that image, the band could also write powerful ballads (see the smash hit "The Ballad Of Jayne" for exhibit A of this argument) that showed there were some serious songwriting chops in the band. Those chops are on full display on the band's two most recent studio albums and the upcoming new album, "Checkered Past", arguably one of the most vital and exciting releases in the band's catalog. The story of how we got from the band's powerful early years to a third new studio album in the relatively short time that Guns and Lewis have reunited has already been well documented, so no need to rehash it. What's important to know and understand is that the driving force of all those classic L.A. Guns songs was Tracii and Phil. Feeling inspired and excited like they did when they first started out, but with many years of wisdom and experience under their belts and, most importantly, a renewed and stronger creative and personal relationship, Guns and Lewis are at a creative peak. "Checkered Past" shows a band invigorated and ready to bash you over the head, as well as 'wow' you with some epic, slower songs, and even make you dance a bit to some rock 'n' roll.

As everyone knows at this point, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has dealt a difficult blow to the entire live music business. While artists, road crews, venues, and fans all collectively eagerly await a return to normalcy, artists have gotten busy bringing live music to fans' living rooms. While they had just commenced work on an upcoming new studio album, in November 2020, L.A. Guns wanted to get together and do one of the things they love most, which is play a 'live' show. The band announced a special gig at the Fremont Country Club in Las Vegas, NV that would celebrate the 31st anniversary of their beloved album, “Cocked and Loaded”.

Album:

L.A. Guns has announced the upcoming release of the latest studio album, "Black Diamonds". Produced by founding member and guitarist Tracii Guns, "Black Diamonds" is a tour-de-force of rock 'n' roll that fans have come to expect from the long-running hard rockers.Written and recorded over the course of 2022, "Black Diamonds" sees Tracii Guns, Phil Lewis and company continuing on the same successful and inspiring sonic journey that they've been taking on their most recent albums: "Checkered Past", "The Devil You Know" and "The Missing Peace". The band doesn't shy away from flexing its hard rock influences as always, but also incorporates more introspective acoustic tracks reflective of its classic rock influences from the '70s. This makes for a potent and highly listenable cocktail of an album in "Black Diamonds". Since the self-titled debut in 1988 to the widely praised recent suite of comeback albums, L.A. Guns, led by Tracii Guns and Phil Lewis, has always delivered solid rock ‘n' roll to the fans. Since core members Tracii and Phil reunited under the banner of L.A. Guns in 2017, a rekindling of the band's creative energy has been continuing unabated over the course of, now, four studio albums. "Black Diamonds" shows no signs of this renaissance slowing down. L.A. Guns never looked like the pretty poster boys that so many of its peers did, but more the band that you would be terrified to bump into in an alley as they would likely be carrying switchblades and ready for a fight. Album:

Wasted is an extended play (EP) by American hard rock band L.A. Guns.Recorded at Red Zone Studios in Burbank, California, it was co-produced by the band with recording and mixing engineer Denis Degher, and released on September 15, 1998 by StandBack Entertainment. The EP features four new tracks, a re-recording of "The Ballad of Jayne" and a cover version of the Kiss song "Cold Gin". It is the only L.A. Guns release to feature vocalist Ralph Saenz.Released on September 15, 1998, Wasted features four new songs (including the title track), a re-recording of the Cocked & Loaded single "The Ballad of Jayne", and a cover version of the Kiss track "Cold Gin".The EP is the only release by the band on the StandBack Entertainment record label, as well as their only release to feature the lineup of lead vocalist Ralph Saenz, guitarist Tracii Guns, bassist Johnny Crypt and drummer Steve Riley.Saenz left the band halfway through the Rock Never Stops Tour in 1998, to be replaced by Joe Lesté and later Jizzy Pearl.Reviewing the EP for music website AllMusic, Jason Anderson described Wasted as "a little bland and predictable", accusing L.A. Guns of adopting "a kind of Alice in Chains vibe that many hard rockers uncertain how to proceed through the decade of grunge/alternative adopted in a limp attempt at timeliness".Anderson described the material on Wasted as "slightly heavier" than the band's earlier work, but claimed that "there isn't anything gained through the musician's efforts".

Bio:

Album:

CleoRecs is releasing L.A. GUNS album “Live! A Night On The Sunset Strip“, the live recording that marked the first performance of the original line-up since 1995, kicking off what was a five week national reunion tour. Recorded in Los Angeles, in 1999, ”Live! A Night On The Strip” commemorates an L.A. Guns legendary performance at the Key Club on Hollywood’s Sunset Boulevard, right in the heart of what was the Glam Rock central during the group’s late-’80s heyday. It had been a while since the classic line-up of Philip Lewis (on vocals), Tracii Guns (on lead guitar), Mick Cripps (rhythm guitar), Kelly Nickels (bass guitar), and Steve Riley (on drums) had joined up on stage to perform all of L.A. Guns’ greatest hits, and after over 10 years, the energy and the chemistry between them was still intact. From the first guitar strains of ‘Face Down’ all the way through to the closing moments of ‘Rip N Tear,’ the group is on fire. The album was produced by Guns N’ Roses’ Gilby Clarke and the sound quality is excellent.Taken from the Vicious Circle album, the opening track ”Face Down” showcases a band at full cyllinders. Then they follow with the familiar sleaziness of “Sex Action” you instantly is reminded just how good this band truly is! A trio of other L.A Guns stables kept the album moving before the new tune “Time” was introduced. While maybe not the best L.A. Guns song, it fits nicely into this live set and is proof that this was more than a nostalgic trip down memory lane.Another selection from Vicious Circle, “Long Time Dead” was next with “Over The Edge” and fan favorite “Never Enough” keeping the party going. A third track from Vicious Circle, “Nothing Better to Do” sung by bassist Kelly Nickels not only put this album over the top, but shows how underrated is their their 1994 release Vicious Circle.A brief but killer guitar solo segued into a bitching version of “Electric Gypsy,” quite possibly the pinnacle of the live set, before the ever popular “The Ballad of Jayne” and a mean and nasty “Rip N’ Tear” closed the album out. How a listener cannot be left with anything but a thirst for more is beyond me.Part of the magic of a live album done properly is not merely to take a trip down memory lane, but it revisits those magical times while also proving the band still has a hunger and a passion. This album not only shows that there was more left in the tank, but it so flawlessly weaved the songs found on it together that from start to finish, weakest to strongest, every song contained the same fire and energy.
