Bio:

Following the positive reactions and a wide media echo on their self-titled debut in 2012, DEVIL’S TRAIN got their follow-up in the pipeline, now. Again and again have their supporters expressed their joy about a band still combining the heavy sound of the 80s with the classic hard rock attitude of the 70s. Even though, DEVIL’S TRAIN had been thought to be a short-term side project in the beginning, it got clear pretty quickly that everyone had simply too much fun working together to quit – the outcome is quite impressive indeed. Instead of keeping it easy and following the straight concept of traditional heavy rock with a biker attitude, which had been so well accepted in the past, DEVIL’S TRAIN have been refining and enriching their individual style for their classically titled follow up „II“ without compromising any of their principles.By doing that, the international quartet never appears to be old-fashioned in any way, they rather add some irony to it. Hard and heavy, but still emotional and, above all, honest – DEVIL’S TRAIN are 100% authentic.„All of us love this bluesy stuff, which the brilliant ‚Badlands‘, ‘Tesla’, ‘Cindarella’, or ‘Tangier’ used to play”, tells Liapakis. “You’ll find hints of it in many of our songs. Of course, they were also found on our debut, but not as prominent as on this one. It just felt right to put more emphasis on it in songs like ‚Can You Feel‘ or ‚Suffocated‘. The most radical song in this matter is surely ‚Mr. Jones‘, which is definitely one of my favorites on the record.”With all this remarkable awareness of traditions, DEVIL’S TRAIN is still no pure retro-act; for instance, the band adds traces of stoner rock to their songs. “That’s one element we enjoy very much. I think that’s one of the details contributing to the fact that we are not only addressing established rock lovers, but also welcoming loads of younger fellows in our audience”, says the singer cheerfully. As a similarity to their first record, not only do DEVIL’S TRAIN prove to be excellent songwriters and composers, but also to be brilliant interpreters of all time rock classics. This time, the musicians adapt with a lot of love for the originals Led Zeppelin’s monumental „Immigrant Song“ and the biker-hymn per se, Steppenwolfs „Born To Be Wild“, to make them their own.In respect of the band’s members’ references, there had never been a doubt about the technical performance or quality of DEVIL’S TRAIN. But „II“ has quite a few positive and enjoyable surprises in store, considering the authenticity and effectivity of presenting their different, more emotional, and down-to-earth sound.

Album:

If this is the new vision of what is Hard N’ Heavy, I am all in. Nowadays so many bands try to reshape the glorious era of the 80s where Hard N’ Heavy outfits made it to the crown jewels. Sadly, those hungry days are all but gone with only memories and the older versions of the bands that profiled them. Aside from a few true groups that still follow the old paths, the rest run towards the unknown with nothing more than decent releases that aren’t even close to the past. Some would call it age, but I think that it has nothing to do with it. Motivation is the key to success following the long standing devotion for the music. If an older band doesn’t have it, it won’t work for long or almost every release will end up being a drag. Well not this here band of DEVIL’S TRAIN, an outfit that can be considered as how old school, made in modern hands, should exactly sound and feel like.DEVIL’S TRAIN, based in Greece, was founded by the MYSTIC PROPHECY’s lead vocalist and producer, Roberto Dimitri Liapakis that rallied the services of two special ex-members of the Finnish STRATOVARIOUS and EVERGREY, Jari Kainulainen on bass and bombarding Jörg Michael on drums. Along with them came what I gather as one of the Greek rising stars, a guitarist that answers to the name of Laki Ragazas. Together they recorded and released a self-titled debut via Edel / Ear Music. I was very anxious to listen how Liapakis, a member of one of the heaviest Metal bands on the face of the earth, performing a different side of Metal music that is rather touchy and emotive than heavy or jagged. As I expected, he didn’t, nor his respected band mates, have any trouble mastering the poignant state that is needed to walk the walk like DOKKEN and talk the talk like WHITESNAKE among the many that were gods in the 80s. Actually, DEVIL’S TRAIN brought it over with additional force and a sound production, which is a sort of modified 80s crunchy sound, yet with a slight level of depth. It was hard to find any scrawny moment around this release, aside from maybe “Yellow Blaze”, which was a decent track that didn’t thrill that much, sounded rather hackneyed and unoriginal and for me it was a mere filler. On the other hand, this release has a wonderful fair share of hits that should become the bread and butter of tomorrow’s Hard N’ Heavy greenhorn bands. “Roll The Dice”, “Sweet Devil’s Kiss” and “Devil’s Train” were the heavier nutcrackers of the album. 80s fans would become evident of the groove element that was inserted into the mix. It might raise a few doubts yet be advised that it actually adds something good to the music and its flow. There is a feeling of great cohesion between the players and good dynamics. “Forever”, “Coming Home” and “The Answers” is where truly wanted to catch Liapakis’s vocals on production semi-ballads, and boy he does it good. The former nearly topped everything in its path. Though not resembling the power ballads of let’s say the SCORPIONS yet it had the right amount of force, along with a powerful solo, to make it sweet just as it was written in the book.Catchy like heart-warming emotiveness to the side of crunchy Rock N’ Roll without any aid of bullshit type tricks or inclinations, this is DEVIL’S TRAIN. Without disrespecting the fathers of this mixed subgenre that shares Metal and Rock, I think that there is new member in this order and a could be leader of a new founded Metal guard.

Line Up:

R.D. Liapakis – vocals (Mystic Prophecy, Valley’s Eve)

Album:

The hell-bound iron horse is picking up speed again and races towards an exciting future with red-hot steaming engines and well-oiled gears ...Devil's Train is back! With the band's ten year anniversary coming up, and two well-received albums under the belts, the European answer to Black Label Society, The Dead Daisies and Black Stone Cherry presents us a killer new album. For this purpose, singer and band mastermind RD Liapakis (Mystic Prophecy / Steel Prophet) joined forces with drum monster Jörg Michael (ex-Saxon / Stratovarius / Axel Rudi Pell / Running Wild), low-end legend Jens Becker (Grave Digger / ex-Running Wild / ex-X-Wild) and six-string wizard Dan Baune (Lost Sanctuary / ex-Monument). This line-up, which could undoubtedly be dubbed a supergroup, delivers a modern yet raw and honest album that bubbles over with visceral energy, southern sleaze and sex appeal. "Ashes & Bones" features a fat and polished contemporary production, without ironing out any of that good old fashioned hard rock attitude. All the guys deliver a stellar performance front to back, which sounds at times unbelievably vigorous and aggressive, at other times easy and laidback. Every note has the listener hearing and feeling the quartet's love for traditional blues and rock 'n' roll, but wrapped in a fresh and exciting new package, with a mighty pinch of metal and without the typical retro antics.Devil's Train is damn tough, Devil's Train does its thing and Devil's Train is absolutely authentic!

Line Up:

R.D. Liapakis – vocals (Mystic Prophecy, Valley’s Eve)
Dan Baune – guitar
Jens Becker – bass
Jörg Michael – drums (Ex-Running Wild, Saxon, Stratovarius)

08. Smell Sex Tonight
09. Rock & Roll Voodoo Child
10. Hold The Line
