Bio:

Formed back in the early 80's, Danish hard rock band FATE made themselves quite a name on the metal/rock scene with their 4 superb albums. In 2009 the band is stronger than ever! The hard rock legend known as FATE came to life in 1984 when guitarist Hank Sherman left Mercyful Fate. Hank hooked up with fellow Copenhagen musicians bassplayer Pete Steiner (a.k.a. Peter Steincke) and drummer Bob Lance (a.k.a. Bjarne Holm). Together they formed Fate with singer and entertainer Jeff "Lox" Limbo. Originally heralded by the press and fans worldwide as the Danish version of Van Halen (first and foremost due to Limbo's stage appearance), the band rocketed into success with the self titled debut album becoming quite a classic on it's own among the hard rock / AOR / melodic metal fans. With the follow-up in 1986, "A Matter Of Attitude", Fate established their success, and gained even more fans. However, 1988 saw the first line-up change in the history of Fate, as Hank Sherman left the band, and the guys had to find a new guitarist to fill the vacant spot. It became The Mysterious Mr. Moth (a.k.a. Jacob Moth). Output number 3 was the "Cruisin' For A Bruisin'" album, which was less of a serious album, and more in the vein of the albums David Lee Roth were putting out at that time .. in other words, an album fitted perfectly at Limbo's voice and stage antics. The album did quite okay, especially thanks to the single & video "Lovers", but it was evident that the band needed to make some changes to get back to their classic hard rock roots. With "Scratch N Sniff" in 1990, the band had returned to the same ballsy sound as on the first 2 albums, but also ventured a step further to becoming a more mature and serious band. This was due to 2 major changes; Limbo was out of the band and new singer Per Henriksen (later changed his last name to Johansson) took the place as frontman with bravour. Per's voice was made for this kind of music, and his input on the sound of "Scratch N Sniff" was tremendous. Also, this album featured the huge talents of Swedish guitarist Mattias "IA" Eklundh, a young dude, who'd later shoot to stardom with his own band Freak Kitchen. Yes, the sound of Fate was intact, but also more daring and adventurous than ever before. After several tours in 1990/91, on their own, as well as with Danish collegues Pretty Maids, Fate and Mattias parted ways, as Mattias wanted to focuse on his solo-career and own material. The band then found a new guitarist in local talent Søren Hoff, and they did a couple of demo's and gigs with this line-up, before the band however officially closed down in 1993. Years went by, and Fate was still a name that reminded people of how great classic hard rock could actually be. In 2004 the guys got the offer to play the prestigious Deep Impact Festival in Germany, and of course this was too good an offer to turn down. So Peter, Per, Søren and the two temporary musicians; drummer Rasmus Duedahl and keyboardist Nicklas Burman, took the trip down there, and had really good response from fans and media - and this also lead to MTM Music wanting to license the "A Matter Of Attitude" and "Scratch N Sniff" albums from EMI, remaster them and release them with some additional bonus tracks. Now, ignited by the overwhelming response to the re-releases, Fate has decided to give it another shot, and with the line-up of Peter, Per, Søren and new drummer Mikael Kvist (from Swedish prog-metal band Elsesphere) Fate is back in action. In the winter of 2005/2006 the band finished recording their next album, "V", with producer Tommy Hansen (who did "Scratch N Sniff" back in 1990, as well as having produced bands like Helloween, Pretty Maids and many more), and promoted worldwide by Intromental Management. Signed to MTM Music for Europe/Australia/South America and Replica Records for France, Fate released "V" in April 2006 . In 2008 Jens Berglid on drums and Mikkel Henderson on keyboards, joined the band and the tracking of new demos begun! Per decided to leave the band in 2008 in the middel of the demo recordings and Dagfinn Joensen was found in 2011. The dansih guitar hero Torben Enevoldsen joined the band on guitar after Søren Hoff and Fate decided to go seperate ways. November 2011 the new album "Ghosts From The Past" will be released 16´th of November in Japan on Rubicon Records and on the 25´th of November in EU on AOR Heaven EU. Dansih legendary AOR band formed back in 1984. Six albums later and a whole lot of members going in and out they are back!

Album:

As requested and promised, here's the remaining two classic FATE records, and what a tremendous albums they are. Easily among my Top 10 favorite Scandi-AOR / Melodic Rock acts of all time, and while FATE diversified their musical style on the previous album, this, their fourth "Scratch 'n Sniff" is definitely different, melodic hard rock oriented / killer guitar driven. This reissue remastered by MTM for their Classix series includes 2 bonus tracks, and sounds million bucks. After the tour for their third album, FATE almost disbanded. Drummer Bjarne Holm and bass player Peter Steincke were in the disjunctive of forming a new band, or continue with the Fate moniker but update their sound. The chosen option was the second, and recruited vocalist Per Henriksen (Crystal Knight, Lavinia) and crazy, promising Swedish guitarist Matthias Eklundh (Frozen Eyes).Combining the catchiness and hooks from Fate early records and a more groovy melodic hard rock approach, the result was "Scratch 'n Sniff", one of the greatest albums in the genre's history.Indeed, the scene was changing and the fluffy AOR keys center role were replaced by melodic clean guitar solos, and for this matter this 'new' Fate was helped by talented Danish producer Tommy Hansen (Pretty Maids, Helloween, Jorn) to shape a perfectly polished sound, but energetic and punchy. There's not a weak track here, from midtempo AOR opener 'Gotta Have It All' and the Scandi melodic-hard gem of 'You're The Best' to the melodic rocker 'One By One', this album is pure gold.'Walk on Fire' is just a blissful mix of AOR and Melodic Rock much in the vein of Europe's Out Of This World, 'Freedom' is a great power ballad, 'Won't let You Down' is again melodic perfection, then 'Larry' eve adds a hair metal touch with its cowbell and anthemic chorus. Then 'Surgeon in Love' pretty much summarize what this album is all about: strong rhythms, melodic refrains, catchy choruses, solid vocals and galactic guitar work.Fate's "Scratch 'n Sniff" is one of the greatest albums in melodic hard rock history, on par with Europe's finest moments, TNT, Dalton, Da Vinci, Treat, etc, but also comparable to American gems like Hardline's debut, Damn Yankees, et all.Very close to perfection, "Scratch 'n Sniff" is A Must Have in your collection.

Line Up:

Bjarne Holm - drums
Peter Steincke - bass
Per Henriksen - vocals
Mattias Eklundh - guitars

01. Gotta Have It All
02. You're The Best

Album:

As requested and promised, here's the remaining two classic FATE records, and what a tremendous albums they are. Easily among my Top 10 favorite Scandi-AOR / Melodic Rock acts of all time, FATE diversified their '80s Melodic Rock / AOR style and sound with this, their third album "Cruisin' For A Bruisin'", remastered by SPV / MTM for their Classix series. It's quite hard for a band to top its masterpiece - Fate's previous album 'A Matter Of Attitude' is a gem - but the Danish guys did it pretty well "Cruisin' For A Bruisin'".Skilled guitarist Hank Sherman left the band and was replaced by 'The Mysterious Mr. Moth' (session musician Jacob Moth) and a permanent keyboard player added to the line up.In fact, nothing changed in the Fate camp; melodies galore, catchy choruses, and lots of keyboards. The production is more 'mature' here, atmospheric AOR / Melodic Rock sound heard in bands like Emergency, early Strangeways, Monro, early Treat, etc.Fate re-recorded 'Love On The Rox' fromt the first album with an updated 1988 sound (very Europe), and while there's a couple of rockers in 'Knock On Wood' and 'Lock You Up', this album is pure '80 keyboard driven AOR.Just listen to midtempo 'Babe, You Got a Friend', or energetic 'Diamond in the Rough', both plenty of magic runs and soaring vocals. But the pearl here is the supreme 'Lovers' with that dut dut keyboards, pumping bass lines and huge chorus; this is pure AOR folks... one of the greatest Scandi-AOR song in history, and one of Fate's best overall. This song alone worth this album. This remaster is very good, not saturated and very clean.

Line Up:

Jeff Limbo - lead vocals
Jacob Moth - guitar
Pete Steiner - bass, backing vocals
Bob Lance - drums
Flemming Rothaus - keyboards, backing vocals

01. Beneath Da Coconuts 4:35

06. Babe, You Got a Friend 4:44
07. Lock You Up 4:26

Album:

Easily among my Top 10 favorite Scandi-AOR / Melodic Rock acts off all time, one of you asked for FATE albums in its remastered releases. The self-titled "Fate" is the debut from these fabulous Danes, a terrific slice of mid-80s melodic stuff plenty of keys, killer guitar riffs and catchy choruses. The instant hook of 'Love On The Rox', the heavenly layered chorus of 'Fallen Angel', the jumpin' rocker 'Rip It Up', midtempo Scandi-diamond 'Victory', the anthemic keyboard driven 'Won't Stop', the soaring 'Summerlove', all are perfect examples of what '80s Scandinavian AOR is all about. The remaster of "Fate" is not the best in the world, but this issue can't hidden the fact that these songs are excellent. This is one of the first albums from the Scandinavian mid-Eighties wave that would take the world by storm the next year with Europe's The Final Countdown. To make it more complete, we have added 3 tracks as extra bonus, taken from the previously released version by Rip Tide Records, These were singles, obviously taken from vinyl here, but darn, what a great songs. This is where it all began. A must have in your classy AOR / Melodic Rock collection.

Album:

Easily among my Top 10 favorite Scandi-AOR / Melodic Rock acts off all time, one of you asked for FATE albums in its remastered releases. This second album "A Matter Of Attitude" is even better than Fate's debut, another terrific slice of mid-80s melodic stuff plenty of keys, killer guitar riffs and catchy choruses. Here these Danish guys take the catchiness further, on par with Europe's The final Countdown, same year, same sound. The opening trio of songs in 'I Won't Stop', 'Hard As A Rock', and the totally brilliant '(I Can't Stand) Losing You' will leave you breathless. 'Point Of No Return' is full of bombastic keyboards and hi-octane guitar from talented Hank Sherman. The monster AOR hook of 'Hunter' sounds very much like primetime Shy, while 'Summerlove' is a glorious hooky affair with a sublime chorus. You simply can't miss Fate's "A Matter Of Attitude" in your collection. It's quintessential Scandi-AOR, something that the band would perfect even more with their next album. This remastered reissue includes 2 previously unreleased songs, complementing the pure 1986 sound of this killer from start to finish slice of catchy AOR / Melodic Rock.

Line Up:

Album:

Danish ’80s melodic rock / AOR legends FATE are releasing a new album ”Back To The Past [Re-Recorded]” where, as title implies, the band re-recorded their most loved songs with the 2010’s line up.In fact the re-recordings were done in 2014 shortly after the band released their comeback album ‘If Not For The Devil’ (2013), and was set to be released back in 2014 / 2015 and work as a teaser before the next album, but as happened so many times the band got screwed badly by the record company that owns the recordings. Finally 2022 that dispute ended and we can hear ”Back To The Past”. Well worth the wait as the band’s classics ‘Gotta Have It All (Re-Recorded)’, ”Hard as a Rock (Re-Recorded)’, ‘Summerlove (Re-Recorded)’, ‘Lovers (Re-Recorded)’, etc all sound great, revitalized. The production sound is, of course, in the vein ‘If Not For The Devil’, already a greatly produced album.

Line Up:

Dagfinn Joensen – Vocals
Torben Enevoldsen – Guitars, Backing Vocals
Mikkel Henderson – Keyboards
Peter Steincke – Bass
Jens Berglid – Drums

Tracks:

01. Gotta Have It All (Re-Recorded)

Dansih legendary AOR band formed back in 1984. Six albums later and a whole lot of members going in and out they are back!

Album:

Next December 1st Frontiers Music present the reissues of three classic albums from Denmark AOR / melodic rockers FATE ; “If Not For the Devil”, “Ghosts from the Past”, and “V” – all being made available digitally globally in remastered form, including previously unreleased tracks.Overwhelmed by the unexpected response to the reissues of their Eighties albums, in 2006 Fate decided to give it another shot and welcomed Mikael Kvist (from Swedish prog metal band Elsesphere) as their new drummer. “V” was recorded and produced by Tommy Hansen – who also did Fate 1990’s “Scratch’n Sniff” – and was greeted as the perfect follow-up for the band’s fourth album, despite the gap of 16 years.Eleven songs pass in review and all of them are catchy tunes, characterized by strong hooks and the incredible voice of Per Johansson (he used to be known as Per Henriksen, but later changed his name) so reminiscent of Jorn Lande. Now augmented by two previously unreleased tracks from the same 2006 sessions, “V” 2023 remaster sounds fabulous. After releasing two watershed albums, Danish heavy metal icons Mercyful Fate found themselves split into two seemingly irreconcilable camps in late 1984. Singer King Diamond was intent on carrying on with the group's gothic brand of heavy metal, but guitarist Hank Shermann had had enough of bats in the belfry, and wished to explore more conventional hard rock styles. When any form of consensus proved out of reach, Diamond kicked off his now legendary solo career, while Shermann recruited singer Jeff "Lox" Limbo (real name Jens Meinert), bassist/keyboardist Pete Steiner, and drummer Bob Lance to form a new band that he simply called Fate. Tellingly, Mercyful Fate's stock was so high at the time that Fate was offered a record deal by EMI within weeks of their inception. They quickly got to work on their eponymous debut album, which featured guest guitar from old MF partner Michael Denner and was released in 1986. As promised, Fate's traditional mix of metal and hard rock -- not to mention their fashion-conscious perms and spandex -- were a far cry from Mercyful Fate's ghastly image, and one certainly couldn't blame either the band or EMI for expecting great things from the group. But the album sold poorly outside of Denmark, failed to ignite any significant chart or radio story in the U.K., and was almost unheard in America. The following year's sophomore A Matter of Attitude fared even worse, and in a move that surely shocked (and pissed off) the band's record company, Shermann quit his own group to join another, heavier band named Lavina. Perhaps even more surprising, Fate chose to carry on regardless, and after hiring new guitarist Jacob Moth and a keyboard player named Floyd Lafayette, they recorded their third album, Cruisin' for a Bruisin', in 1998. This outing proved to be the last for vocalist Limbo, however, who only barely beat guitarist Moth to the door, himself already moving off to work with power metallers Blind Guardian. As for Fate, the original rhythm section of Steiner and Lance persisted long enough to bring on new members Per Henriksen (vocals) and Mattias Eklundh (guitar) and issue one final album, 1990's Scratch'n Sniff. But this, at last, proved the final straw, as Lance (now using his given name, Bjarne T. Holm) reunited with Hank Shermann in the short-lived Zoser Mez before committing to a full-fledged Mercyful Fate reunion a few years later.

It must be pointed Dagfinn Joensen’s awesome vocal performance, one of the highest virtues of this recording. If the previous songs are fantastic, then the pair “Bridges Are Burning” and “Feel Like Making Love” are even better. The former jumps via terrific guitar / keyboard chains of wonder, the latter is a heavenly melodious piece of Hard / AOR in the best Scandi tradition with a foot-tapping hook and a luxury chorus. Both highlights.“Gambler” is another solid one, mid-tempo paced and with a modern Melodic Rock vibe rich in keyboards, where the instrumentation is slightly more separated to provide variation, followed by the simple yet effective power ballad “Hard to Say Goodbye” with acoustic guitars, pianos and crowned by a short but intense solo. We’re at track 6 and you feel this is an album to purchase and keep.On the second half we find Fate, as mentioned earlier, trying new sounds on some songs. All are stamped with the band’s signature style, but the guitars are tuned down a little as on the groovy “Made of Stone”. The marching “Man Against The Wall” has a structure recalling mid-eighties post NWOBHM era but rounded with a modern sound.“My World” reminds me nineties British TEN (Gary Hughes), the moody “Turn Back Time” is quite melodic and “Taught to Kill” is the heavier song on the CD with strong riffs and mysterious keyboards. “Gimme All Your Love” close the album in modern Melodic-Hard way akin the present Swedish scene like Tommy Denander. Some my argue that “If Not For The Devil” is a mixed bag, but to me is a fantastic album by Fate. With a ‘mixed bag’ I mean rabid AORsters will love the first 6 songs and perhaps not so much the second half of the disc. Wrong.Fate conjure on this album their melodic ’80s origins (AOR / Melodic Rock) with the band’s more edgy, harder Nineties era. And works greatly. You have awesome, classic catchy Scandi tunes and then more groovy rockers, something like side A / side B.There’s a sharp production, never boring songwriting, tight musicianship and a jaw-dropping vocalist who works in perfect sync with Fate’s diverse musical orientation here. What else can you ask for?

And they have succeeded. The overall musical style recalls to one of the best Fate, 1990’s ‘Scratch ‘N Sniff’ album, basically thanks to the melodic and punchy guitar work by Torben Enevoldsen. The extensive use of keyboards – a trademark of the band’s most glorious moments – is welcomed, and the band found a very good vocalist on Dagfinn Joensen which has a clean and tuneful voice reaching high notes easily with versatility. The CD starts really well with typical the ’80s keyboard sounds of “Children Of the Night”, a catchy melodic rocker with a very good chorus. The really good keyboard lines brightens up the tune, but it’s clear from the beginning that what will drive the music on this album are the guitars. Enevoldsen has added a melodic yet strong sound to the band, with killer rhythm guitars and fine articulated solos.“Miracle” is another assassin Euro Melodic number blended with ‘hard AOR’ mixing awesome keyboards with rockin’ guitars and again, a catchy chorus. “Seeds Of Terror” is a bit heavier and modern AOR rocker in a unmistakable Scandi style, while follower “Fear Of The Stranger” has a more dark / epic style. There’s a nice melody on the semi-midtempo “At The End Of The Day”, with a synth / six string counterpoint and a style that reminds me Last Autumn’s Dream. Next, eighties AOR defines the simple but effective refrain of “All That I Want”. “Follow Your Heart” is a slower track, the almost mandatory ballad. Despite its nature still includes plenty of great guitar work. Nice one.“Daddy’s Girl” is one of my favorites. This keyboard driven tune is truly faithful to Fate’s 80’s style, catchy and foot-tapping.The rest of the material maintains a good level, being the melodic and modern “Moving On”, the anthemic “The Last Time” and the great keyboard infused “The Other Side” the best. With “Ghosts From The Past” Fate returned in great form, delivering one of the best albums from their career. It’s a punchy, strong Melodic Hard Rock album spiced with classy AOR, melodious yet powerful.Besides the solid songwriting what stands out on this album is the phenomenal guitar job of Torben Enevoldsen. But all the musicianship is truly good, and the massive use of keyboards enriches the sound all over.Produced by the band and Thomas Pedersen at various studios in Denmark, “Ghosts From The Past” has a polished but sharp edge, now more crisp thanks to the fresh remaster.
