Album:

This is a five classic albums CD box set with the original artworked 'mini LP' CD wallets in deluxe packaging. It contains the albums Not Of This Earth, Flying In A Blue Dream, The Extremist, Joe Satriani and Crystal Planet. This is a great value box set, featuring some truly inspirational instrumental guitar tracks (and the odd vocal) from the legendary Joe Satriani. Sometimes the hands wander a bit, and the whole thing gets a bit self-indulgent (eg. widdly-diddly overkill) and other times I feel like I'm listening to the incidental music from Baywatch, but that can be excused when we consider the overall quality of the songs and the beauty of the playing. Standout tracks include Cool #9, Headless and Trundrumbalind. My major gripe is that Satch's greatest achievement and one of his most popular albums - Surfing With The Alien - is missing. Released after Not Of This Earth and before Flying In A Blue Dream, I was amazed to learn that this sublime album is not included. So you won't be hearing Echoes, Satch Boogie or Lords Of Karma. Otherwise, nice collection.

Album:

JOE SATRIANI is often referred to as ‘The Peoples Favourite’ Rock electric guitarist. And that’s because his guitar-work feels so natural. It is sincerely played and has organic charm.Take for example the title track ‘Shockwave Supernova’ on his new album of the same title to be released next July 24, which is surprising as a shooting star that bursts out of the clouds on a black-velvet night. It has a classical feel, little explosions of bright guitar explode out-and-into the interstellar medium (which is a cosmic backcloth of super flexed drum-work and other stimulating orchestration.) The universal appeal of this artist becomes immediately clear. His work is like the very stardust we are made of.‘Lost in Memory’ has a bubbling pace — a constant cascade. The heartbeat of your local river, perhaps. As it winds through a much-loved neighbourhood. The guitar almost sprouts from the banks of this beat. Sometimes jumping higher — then glittering and darting in the fringes.Satriani gathered together his favourite musicians to collaborate on this beautiful album. Mike Keneally (keys and guitars) Marco Minnemann (drums) and Bryan Beller (bass guitar). But for the ‘Crazy Joe’ track the rhythm is handled by Vinnie Colaiuta (drums) and Jane’s Addiction bassist — Chris Chaney. On this track, the guitar is almost trying to talk to you. Attempting to clarify points. The bass notes sound poppy (Vinnie plays with Sting, so perhaps there is a link.) This is a real Rompa-Stompa.The great thing about Satch is that he doesn’t get fixated about the technicalities of the recording process. And although the album is superbly put-together (co-produced and engineered by John Cuniberti and recorded at Skywalker Sound in California) the love of his music just shines. You can tell that Joe prefers to groove with his band mates. And that’s why it’s so fluid.Rock-fans will especially love the ‘Scarborough Stomp’ with tarnished keyboards and bleached-out riffs. The guitar solo here seems particularly burned. Buzzed out and hammered. Here are good times… dreaming high.We admired the decorative cortication of ‘Butterfly and Zebra’ — a small but perfectly formed samplet of verdigris guitar skilfully superimposed onto a membranous palette. It’s unlikely that any of these new songs will immediately grab at you and charm you away. They do not dramatically lunge in… Or force themselves onto you. They are not trying to dominate their way into your speakers. And,probably, that’s not the point of Satch’s work anyhow. In general, his ideas and motifs are designed to crystallize gently and to grow — in productive symbiosis — to shine light on your own life experiences. To enrich and enliven your spirit. As a patient music teacher and lover of sounds, Joe always allows space and time for his songs to find their own way into your heart. He just lays down some interesting puzzles for your brain to unpick. And so your imagination is delighted right through this fifteen track feast.Onto the final track, ‘Goodbye Supernova’, again, the guitar imitates patterns of human speech. If you were in a dreamy mood then you could put down your own vocabulary. This manner of articulation is a stand-out feature of Satriani’s style. It is very clear that he is not just fiddling away on a fret-board. He’s trying to enunciate every idea before it is squeezed out. And he bids you pay attention.Once again he is the teacher and you are the grateful student.Never openly grand or particularly fussy, here are complex pieces full of biotic potential. Musical blessings that you will allow into your life time-and-time again — they will grant lasting peace and ease your mind.

Album:

Guitar extraordinaire Joe Satriani has propelled his craft immensely in an almost 40 year career releasing multiple albums, touring worldwide with G3 and as a solo artist and teaching masterclasses for aspiring guitarists to find their own unique voices on the instrument. Throughout his career Satriani has always been a working musician and his reputation has garnered him the opportunity to collaborate with some talented musicians in the music industry. For his latest album titled ‘What Happens Next ’ Satriani recruited Red Hot Chilli Pepper’s drummer Chad Smith (who’s also the drummer for his other band Chickenfoot) and legendary Deep Purple bassist Glenn Hughes. This powerful trio had a lot of fun playing together and their chemistry in the studio created an instrumental album that paves a new music direction for Satriani to blend his rock and soul influences together emphasizing on a stiffness quality in the percussion resembling modern EDM and hip hop production techniques.Opening song “Energy” is Satriani churning a mighty Jimmy Page type riff with a blistering solo, pounding drums and thunderous bass backing him up. “Catbot” oozes with funk, a trait that both Chad and Glenn do so well in their respective bands and Satriani brings his funkiest guitar playing to date. “Thunder High On The Mountain” is an epic composition with additional strings heightening the drama; Satriani really pulls out his best tapping skills as well as his well refined metallic riffing. “Cherry Blossum” leans almost in a modern RnB direction (somewhat similar to Muse’s Undisclosed Desires) it’s romantic to its core with its futuristic keyboards and Chad’s drumming sounds like he is playing on a MPC drum machine. “Righteous” returns to a more familiar rock territory, its light and has a catchy melody.“Smooth Soul” is Satraini’s ode to the soul music of the 60’s and 70’s he grew up listening to as a kid, at times his guitar style on the composition reminds me of Santana or Eric Clapton. “Headrush” is for those who love a feel good boogie tune, reminiscent of Beck, Bogert & Appice going ballistic and Satriani does it justice in his own brilliant way. “Looper” is a tame groove based composition, the guitar soloing is free and at times feels improvised but it’s a welcomed addition to ‘What Happens Next’. The self-titled song continues the soul and rock theme throughout this album delivering excellent musicianship from the trio. “Super Funky Badass” is everything the title suggests, it’s the longest composition on the album but doesn’t ever drag on for too long and never bores the listener. “Invisible” brings out Satriani’s jazz fusion tendencies and Glenn Hughes contribution on bass is seemingly notable as he goes all out on his instrument. “Forever and Ever” is a fitting composition to end the album, it embodies Satriani’s emotive guitar playing and pays in part tribute to his hero Jimi Hendrix with Electric Ladyland like guitar passages.‘What Happens Next’ was a question Joe Satriani asked himself when he was contemplating what music direction he would take on this album and he answered by going into a new and different route creatively. It is definitely an album that goes back to the guitarists’ roots taking inspiration from the soul and rock music he grew up on as a kid but it fits very well into this age of making Spotify playlists and cherry picking single songs rather than consuming full length albums. Even for the more traditional Satriani fan there’s still something to chew on as the veteran guitarist is still exploring new ideas sonically and plays his instrument like a pro-athlete who’s still hungry for meddles and titles. This is a refreshing new path that Satriani is exploring rather than revisiting and it should be applauded and embraced.

Album:

JOE SATRIANI‘s unmatched guitar power is on full display on the adventurous new album ‘Shapeshifting‘, his 18th studio release to be released next April 10th.Co-produced by Jim Scott (Foo Fighters, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers) and featuring the core band of legendary drummer Kenny Aronoff, bassist Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction) and keyboardist Eric Caudieux, ‘Shapeshifting’ brings Satch’s superior six-string skill to the fore on another exciting collection of original songs.Lead single “Nineteen Eighty” harkens back to the spirit of Joe’s first band The Squares, while highlights like “All My Friends Are Here” and “Big Distortion” prove his gift of devising lyrical guitar leads that resonate long after they’ve leapt from your speakers.Lead single “Nineteen Eighty” harkens back to the spirit of Joe’s first band The Squares, while highlights like “All My Friends Are Here” and “Big Distortion” prove his gift of devising lyrical guitar leads that resonate long after they’ve leapt from your speakers.Satriani was determined to try different things on ‘Shapeshifting’ – a lot of different things. The new album sounds like 15 different guitar players are performing on it. Yes, diverse, but still classic Satch.“I know it’s the same guy, because it’s me, but it sounds like I’m really moving into an area where each melody requires me to almost be somebody else.”This is a stated intention of Satriani, who doesn’t want to repeat himself (if that can be helped within the confines of the instrumental guitar rock template). Many have tried to emulate Joe’s formula and fallen flat. It’s easy for an instrumental guitar record to get boring. What makes Satriani excel, aside from his uncanny playing abilities, is his ear for the song.He knows that first impressions matter and he ensures there’s a hook, a melody, something to grasp onto at first listen on most of his tunes. The album opens with a dramatic drumroll and thumping baseline and Satch’s heavily distorted guitar sound and the albums self-titled track which whets the appetite immediately, followed by the latest single ‘Big Distortion’ which is like a gargantuan sounding wall of distortion crashing down on you with an old-school Rock ’N’ Roll vibe about it.‘All For Love’ is a darker more emotive track with a slower pace and cutting guitar work as only Satch does, ‘Ali Farka, Dick Dale, an Alien and Me’ is a quirky sounding track as the title would imply and Satch takes full advantage in making the guitar as broad as an instrument as you will hear with his majestic touch.‘Teardrops’ is another emotive number as the storytelling continues via darker emotive guitar work that takes the breath away, ‘Perfect Dust’ with its slight country twang lifts the spirits back up and again showcases the diversity Satriani likes to bring across his recordings.Satch’s big hitter and first single ‘Nineteen-Eighty’ is up next and as you will have no doubt already have heard is a throwback to the majesty of the era and has subtle similarities in riffage to earlier tracks like ‘Surfing With The Alien’ etc, an absolute beast of a track it has Satch at his best and will no doubt be another fan-favorite live.‘All My Friends Are Here’ is a feel-good number with a bluesy backbone, it is a laid back summer-anthem for those days with the windows rolled down and stereo blasting, ‘Spirits, Ghosts and Outlaws’ is a gnarly number that grips you from the off with its dirty riff and gritty tone whilst ‘Falling Stars’ teases you with its subtle intro guiding you through the mind and complexity that is the brain of Joe Satriani, building up the tension before unleashing a funky crescendo and sublime solo work from the man himself.‘Waiting’ takes the pace back down with a slow-paced track that like on may of his album is so short and sweet it bridges between tracks and is a signature Satriani trait that is subtle but so beautifully effective.‘Hear The Blue River’ with is Reggae backbone is our penultimate track and once again has Satch bring own all the world music influences to his music and also showing regardless of which one he has pulled inspiration from, how easily he can make a guitar instrumental track out of it and make it his own too.The album wraps up with ‘Yesterday’s Yesterday‘ opening up with an acoustic guitar, a rarity for a Satriani track, and is another feel-good number to close of a simply outstanding recording once again from Joe and Co. An understated number where less is more, Joe closes off ‘Shapeshifting’ and leaves you begging for more.A simply beautiful album on all levels Satriani has knocked it out of the park once again.

Bio:

Joseph "Joe" Satriani (born July 15, 1956) is an American instrumental rock guitarist and multi-instrumentalist. Early in his career, Satriani worked as a guitar instructor, with many of his former students achieving fame, such as Steve Vai, Larry LaLonde, Rick Hunolt, Kirk Hammett, Andy Timmons, Charlie Hunter, Kevin Cadogan, and Alex Skolnick; he then went on to have a successful solo music career. He is a 15-time Grammy Award nominee and has sold over 10 million albums, making him the biggest-selling instrumental rock guitarist of all time.In 1988, Satriani was recruited by Mick Jagger as lead guitarist for his first solo tour.In 1994, Satriani toured with Deep Purple as the lead guitarist. He has worked with a range of guitarists during the G3 tour, which he founded in 1995. His G3 collaborators have included Vai, LaLonde, Timmons, Steve Lukather, John Petrucci, Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen, Brian May, Patrick Rondat, Paul Gilbert, Adrian Legg, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Steve Morse and Robert Fripp.Satriani has been the lead guitarist for the supergroup Chickenfoot since co-founding the band in 2008. Since 1988, he has been using his own signature guitars, the Ibanez JS Series, which are sold in music stores worldwide. He has also collaborated with Vox to create his own wah, delay, overdrive and distortion pedals as well as a collaboration with Marshall Amplification for the creation of his own signature series amplifier head, the JVM410HJS.

Album:

Joe Satriani, teacher to Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett amongst others, has released his eighteenth studio album which contains fourteen instrumental tracks. This album stretches boundaries and challenges the norm for a guitar based instrumental release. Satriani has had time to toy with ideas and produce fresh thinking on many plains.Even the album cover is simple but very clever; outlines of a guitar body form elephants’ ears whilst guitar necks are their trunks!Track one, `Sahara’ is the first to be lifted as a single. A middle eastern rhythm rings out as Satriani’s trademark guitar sound riffs over the top pausing midway for a Gilmour-esque clean solo before the whammy bar gets a good workout. The title track starts with a modern fizzy drum and synth beat before zooming off in a wah infused Jazz Rock affair. Are we hearing the elephants roar here?`Faceless’ lightens the mood as a gentle piano piece floats seamlessly with Satriani’s creamy distorted soloing making this a beautiful, dreamy track.Blue Foot Groovy’ lives up to its name with a sassy bass and rhythm guitar laying the foundations for some sweet electric blues.Tension And Release’ has a funky wobbly rhythm to it that wouldn’t be out of place on a Led Zep album. Here the fretboard wizard seems to make is guitar resemble and take the place of a brass section at one point.A thick, fuzzy tone makes the solo part leap out of the track. `Sailing The Seas Of Ganymede’ is loaded with echoes and delays which gives the track an air mystery and transports the listener to another world. We return to a middle eastern vibe on `Doors Of Perception’ as traditional instruments and drums blend with eerie guitar phrasings and soft keyboard padding. Another hauntingly exquisite track. `Pumpin’ struts its funky stuff as a Hammond wails and classic seventies synth sounds duel with the guitar maestro’s licks.`Dance Of The Spores’ is a heavy, dark, futuristic track filled with synth fizz basslines and long, thick slow guitar riffs until the solo kicks in and dive-bombs, fast licks and finger tapping lighten the track which then brings in a choir and a fairground like melody before returning to its darker roots.Night Scene’ contains Synth rhythms that Jean-Michel Jarre would be proud of and an upbeat tempo that works as a fine vehicle for Satriani to lay down a bright chirpy guitar element on to.Moving close to Pink Floyd territory comes `Through A Mother’s Day Darkly.’ Spoken commentary, symphonic string sections and refined, delayed guitar parts sing out on this epic track. `22 Memory Lane’ is a calmer, sweet track which meanders along sweetly in readiness for the final track, `Desolation’ which is just pure guitar and synth padding. This is a symphony for electric guitar!Anyone who hears this album will intuitively know it is Joe Satriani playing. His compressed, saturated guitar tone is unmistakable, but what is different here is how outside influences and musical flavours have blended to make wonderous soundscapes that move the listener to other worlds. So, when the stress and pain of todays world gets to much, hitch a ride with `The Elephants Of Mars’
