Bio:
Machine Head is an American metal band from Oakland, California.Formed on October 12, 1991,the group was founded by vocalist and guitarist Robb Flynn and bassist Adam Duce. The current lineup of the band comprises Flynn, drummer Dave McClain, guitarist Phil Demmel, and bassist Jared MacEachern. Machine Head is one of the pioneering bands in the New Wave of American Heavy Metal.Machine Head was formed by member Robb Flynn, previously part of the bands Forbidden and Vio-lence. Flynn felt musically unfulfilled with Vio-lence and requested to start a side project. When his request was denied, he left the band and formed Machine Head in 1991 with Adam Duce, Logan Mader and Tony Constanza. The band's first album Burn My Eyes, was a big success in Europe where it garnered attention on MTV's Headbangers Ball. In America (with HBB taken off the air during the grunge movement) Machine Head would not have success until later albums. The band nearly disbanded in 2002 after negotiating off its label Roadrunner Records, when controversy surrounding Machine Head's fourth album Supercharger (released 3 weeks after September 11, 2001) resulted in their songs and music video for the song "Crashing Around You" (which featured burning buildings) being pulled from all media outlets. The band re-signed with Roadrunner soon after and has released three albums since, 2003's Through the Ashes of Empires, 2007's The Blackening (which earned Machine Head its first Grammy Award nomination) and 2011's Unto the Locust. Machine Head have sold over 3 million records worldwide.
Album:
Two years following the return to form "Of Kingdom and Crown," Machine Head began to release singles hinting at Unatoned. "These Scars Won't Define Us" with its Wu-Tung Clan collaboration, "Unbound" with its hard hitting groove, and "Bonescraper" with its memorable chorus.Starting with the good, the album starts seriously heavy with "Atomic Revelations," fast paced and riff oriented. Unatoned chooses to skip the long intro (for the most part) and gets straight into the action. "Unbound" has some sick blast beats and the main riff is heavy. The album focuses much more on hooks and choruses this time around than heaviness, which is why these songs would be good to play live. Speaking of, "Outsider" and "Addicted to Pain" also have very catchy choruses. I still enjoy Flynn's vocals this time around, but one thing that surprised me was the more foregrounded use of gutturals in "Bleeding Me Dry," which I enjoy the experimentation of. Machine Head is a very experimental band, which is one of the biggest reasons their fanbase is so easily divided. Some enjoy the tough grooves of "Burn My Eyes" and "Through The Ashes of Empires," some enjoy the more progressive thrash of "The Blackening" and "Unto The Locust," while some (rarely) prefer the nu metal "Supercharger" and "The Burning Red."However, some of the experimentation caught me off guard in a strange way. The interlude "Dustmaker" had me very confused the first time I heard it, it doesn't sound any bit like Machine Head, but I enjoy the more ambient, calm style of it and I think it flows really well into "Bonescraper." The beginning of "Bleeding Me Dry" had me concerned at first, but luckily it dissolved into something better. "Scorn" is the "Arrows In Words From The Sky" of this album, and despite it being shorter than deserved, I still enjoyed the direction it took.Although the album is mostly well-rounded, I believe it still suffers from two things; length and general strong structure. To start with length, the album is barely over 40 minutes, unheard of for any of Machine Head's earlier work and outmatched by even "Unto The Locust" which is 48 minutes yet only having 7 tracks. No track reaches over six minutes, and each song, despite being well-crafted, feel like they would be better if slightly extended. Secondly is the general song structure. In my eyes this is Machine Head's album to play live, there are many strong choruses and big hooks in each song, but listening to the studio versions they can sometime blend together. The studio album suffers from this, but live audiences will definitely enjoy the hooks.Overall, the album is a experimental, somewhat commercialized "Of Kingdom And Crown." Not necessarily a misstep, but maybe a sidestep to what people may have been expecting, usually a staple normalcy of Machine Head releases.
