Bio:

They were born in blood, conceived in Hell, and reanimated by accident! Bent on cannibalizing the entire human race, Blood Opera have already infected whole populations with their raunchy and often controversial live displays of violence, gore, and perverse sexual acts!! Having feasted on human flesh with bands such as GWAR and being endorsed by the zombie Godfather himself, George A. Romero- these purveyors of so-called 'dead metal' have quickly become Canada's #1 horror metal act. With powerful operatic vocals, sleazy guitar riffs and blasphemous lyrics taken directly from some of the scariest movies ever made, one thing is for sure- if the gates of Hell are left open, it could mean the end of humanity! The band's debut album is set for resurrection in February of 2024 and holds the first key to mankind's only hope for survival!! Follow Blood Opera socials for more!!!

Album:

This time we don't get black or death metal from Canada, but Blood Opera. These masked folks have been making hard rock and heavy metal since 2019. Songs in the Key of Death is the debut album following an unnamed EP released in 2019. According to the enclosed promotional text, the band members died while recording the first album and were pulled from their graves by some guys, to continue shaping the band as zombies. Nice story, which says it all about the theme of this Canadian band, which then mainly revolves around gore, zombies and horror films. Admittedly, it is all unoriginal in concept and already used in several ways to add something extra to a band's image. As such, we find a Gwar reference in the promo, a band the Canadians have already shared the stage with. With the intro Just Keep Digging, the band starts off right away in a graveyard. Indeed, the only copy of the unreleased album is buried with the band members. Feeding Frenzy continues the intro as the first full-length track, showcasing screaming vocals alongside clean vocals. Very tastefully, guest vocals from Morgan Lander (Kittie) and Max Murder alternate and some vocal lines are also combined. The band gets the horror from the digital box of tricks, a sample, crazy guitar riffs, effects and tunes. Handsomely and extravagantly executed, in the opinion of your editor on duty. Next, Don't Go Out Tonight is quite adventurous, but also a tad cheesy. The addition of gang-shouts by the guitarist and bassist admittedly add something to this track. Fight to Survive is another one of those songs that stands out, mainly due to the rather beautiful vocal lines, backing vocals, voice-over and the rousing rhythm. The The Gates of Hell, added in this review, also showcases a well-crafted song, but after the amusingly found interlude, the The Dickies cover Killer Klowns From Outer Space still falls a lot more into favour. It is the moment when the originally punk-rock meets heavy metal. This is followed by the strongly performed Brundlefly with fine spacey keys, a guitar solo and a memorable chorus! I can't catch the band on any more beauty flaws, but do note that the best part of Songs in the Key of Death has now passed the review. Well, almost then, because the classically opened Damien sounds haunting, urgent and, above all, horroresque at its base. After the introductory section, this 11th track swings quite a bit and I enjoy the conjuring, yet slightly different vocal lines. In addition, Be My Victim is especially noteworthy for its beautiful, long-spun vocals and keyboard work.Below the line, then, it is clear to me: Blood Opera delivers a debut that is an ode to classic horror, heavy metal, hard rock and also some punk. Whether you can relate to that is, of course, a matter of taste. Personally, I think this album just exceeds the mid-range, but nowhere really manages to surprise in a big way. I have therefore mentioned the best songs in this review.
